14 & Under PNS Championship Meet Recap
PNS 14 & Under Championship Recap
We had an amazing meet.
Tons of best times for sure- but sometimes a best time can be unimpressive because you know that swimmer didn’t really put a good race together, or maybe you’ve seen them do things in practice that indicate they are ready to drop far more time than what they actually show in a meet. At this meet, had many best time swims that were very impressive. Swims that were exciting to watch, and the results were exciting because we knew they had put together a terrific race technically and raced with awesome effort and intensity.
I have a few highlights list below, but they really don’t do the kids justice. There were just too many amazing effort swims, and all the kids deserve recognition for putting their best effort out over and over again.
A BIG thanks as well to all the parents who were there in their Wave shirts cheering over and over again for three long days in a row. We heard you, you were loud, and it made a difference.
Some highlights from the meet:
13-14 girls relays- in particular the 200 medley. The 400 was exciting because all 4 girls swam great legs and Chloe swam almost two seconds better than her best 100 free to pull out a win at the end, but the 200 medley was awesome because they dominated the race, winning by two body lengths. Sophia Hwang, Allie Macdonald, Gabby Dang and Chloe Limargo crewed both of those relays.
Gabby Dang swam some awesome races, but I really thought her 3 100’s (fly, back, free) were impressive to watch
Kyle Falkner raced great all weekend with a tough slate of events: 100 & 200 Back, 200 Fly, 400 IM, 500 Free, 1650 Free. Best part?: in prelims on Saturday he swam the 100 Back in a best time of 1:03, then turned around 10 minutes later and swam a 2:18 200 fly breaking our old team record in that event by 4 seconds.
Filippa Andersson dropped time in every event, so maybe it was because she was in an outside lane and out in the lead but her 100 free looked awfully good
Emiliya Jones had some nice races but her 200 free to me was the highlight of the weekend for her. She walked into the meet seeded 18th in the event, after prelims she moved up to 8th with a 2:10, then came back for finals went out in her best 50 and 100 times and was still able to gut out a terrific second 100, drop almost two more seconds and finish in 7th place. That was inspiring, especially given she had also raced in the 400 Free Relay and the 1650 earlier that day.
Mia Chang’s 500 Free was a terrific swim with another young lady on her hip pushing her the whole way. Mia had to battle hard the last 200 yards to win it
Chloe Limargo went well under the National Top 200 Rankings in both her 200 and 400 IM’s and set team records in both swims- but the effort she put into these races was impressive and exciting
Maggie Van Nortwick a four second time drop in the 100 breast was nice, but her zest and pre-race preparation are what made this happen
Any of Jazlynn Pak’s finals races- she really went out and competed winning the B final four times
Wing Yun Au her 200 Back in finals may have been her best effort of the weekend, and it paid off with a 3rd place finish and a two second time drop after dropping five seconds in prelims
Kenny Ma in the 11-12 Boys B 400 Free Relay on Sunday we had a member of the relay who didn’t make it in to swim. After a quick staff discussion, we decided to swim the relay with just three swimmers, which would mean a DQ for the relay but they at least would have the opportunity to race and Kenny would lead off and go for a best 100 time. Kenny did lead off with a personal best time two seconds faster than his previous best. Coach Dave and I noticed him shaking his legs out after his swim and we joked that he was going to get up and go again. Well, he did get up and go again- a gutsy decision for a couple of reasons and the coaches applauded his bravado as well as his effort.
