Age Group Select

We had a boatload of outstanding swims despite training very hard for the past few weeks. The athletes proved they could swim well no matter how fatigued and sore their muscles were! Everyone got to swim races they had not done in a while—if ever!! (lots of first-time 200s)—and many discovered they have become good at some of those events! They also executed race strategies very well, which resulted in several exciting races. Our biggest pitfall proved to be the back flip turn in the 200 IM where we had several DQs that will have to be corrected in workout. The coaches are extremely proud of their efforts, and especially proud of how many stayed late to cheer on their teammates in the distance events! Below are some of the outstanding performances:

  • Lauren Hizzey was the only AGS swimmer to represent the group in the first sessions of the meet and she made her presence known with some incredible swims and best times! Lauren’s most memorable race was the 200 IM where she thought she gained 20 seconds from her best time but in reality, she DROPPED more than 20 seconds!
  • Ethan Chan swam his first 400 IM and had five best times, including a 26.7-second drop in the 200 IM and a 19.7-second drop in the 100 fly!
  • Ella Tulanon qualified for Washington State Champs in her very first 1650 and picked up new US motivational times in every single race!
  • Mark Lukiyanov swam his first 1650 (and almost qualified for State Champs) and 200 Back (where he did qualify for State Champs) and dropped time in five races.
  • Alex Arlouski swam a perfect 100 free to win his heat going away, and dropped 23.3 seconds!
  • Bimu Beibit picked up five new best times, including BB times in two new events: 100 Back and 200 Free!
  • Kamilla Bugaitsova executed a flawless 200 IM to drop 2.5 seconds to go along with four other new best times!
  • Ellen Feng continued to shine, grabbing a BB time in her first-ever 200 IM and a B time in her first-ever 200 free. She also cut 8.1 seconds off her 100 IM and 6.6 seconds off her 50 breast to go a perfect 6-for-6 in best times!
  • Claire Gao overcame some very sore muscles earlier in the week to snag BB times in her first-ever 200 Free and 200 IM, not to mention a 14.9-second drop in her 100 Free!
  • Sophia Gorveatt showed everyone her mental toughness, coming in after having been sick the previous week to gain two new best times, including her first-ever 200 Back!
  • Olivia Henaire had four best times, including her first-ever 200 IM and a big drop in her 100 Breast to earn a BB time!
  • Tommy Henderson swam FOUR new races (three of them 200s) and earned his first-ever State Champs cut in the 200 Back!
  • Nora Herman assaulted her own personal record book, gaining not just five new best times, but shattering them! Check out these time drops: -12.5 (100 Back), -24.1 (100 Breast), -3.0 (100 IM), -10.7 (50 Breast), and her first-ever 200 IM, where she earned a BB time!
  • Yuzuki Ishizuka earned new B times in all her new events, including her first-ever 200 Free!
  • Kiara Keim was not feeling her best, but that didn’t stop her from courageously giving her all in every race, highlighted by finishing the meet with a gutsy 200 IM!
  • Richelle Li cut a whopping 17.4 seconds off her 200 IM!
  • Alex Lobdell wrestled his way to five new best times, including a BB time in his first-ever 100 fly, a 10.4-second drop in his 100 breast, and a 22.9-second drop in his 100 IM!
  • Molly Mayfield had three new best times and Good Golly Miss Molly! What a 200 Free! All her hard work in practice led to a massive 36.8-second drop!!
  • Kumail Mukadam churned out five new best times, including a smashing 200 IM, where he earned a B time on his first try!
  • Shir Netz tried her best to steal the show by snatching up six new best times, highlighted by a 20.6-second improvement in her 200 free and a new B time in her first-ever 200 IM!
  • Theresa Nguyen swam her first ever 200 Back AND 200 Breast AND 200 IM…not to mention a whopping 11.5-second drop in her 200 Free! Holy Smokes!!
  • Parisha Parikh had four best times and barely missed a fifth, but her best race was the 100 free where she not only dropped 14.7 seconds, but came from behind in the final five yards to win her heat by putting her head down and not breathing!
  • Karolina Patusiak not only swam her first-ever 200 Back and 200 Breast (where she qualified for State Champs) but chopped 13.00 seconds off her 200 Free time!
  • Amelia Pletosu not only batted 1.000 with six best times (including her first ever 200 Back, Breast, and IM!) but cut off a total of 36 seconds in her other three races! That is what happens when you give 100% in every workout every day!!!
  • Vien Pogue not only picked up three first-place swims, but she also went 6-for-6! Her highlight reel features a 9-second drop in her 200 Free, an 8.6-second drop in her 100 Free, and a first-ever 200 Back where she broke the 3-minute barrier!
  • Aayush “Papush” Rane brought the heat to the pool, crushing his record book with six new best times. His Saturday events were particularly outstanding: -5.6 in his 100 Back, -10.7 in his 100 Breast, and -10.8 in his 100 Fly!
  • Navya Sainani added five new best times to her growing collection, led by her 9.0-second drop in her 100 Back (what a great start!), -8.0 seconds in her 50 Fly, and her first-ever 200 IM!
  • Sanvi Shrivastava went a near-perfect 5-of-6 best times, with the sixth swim only 0.6 from a PB. Her huge haul included a BB time in her first-ever 200 IM and a 5.7-second drop in her 100 Free!
  • Beata Sobol brought the Tomata on Saturday to clobber her previous best in the 100 IM, knocking 17.0 seconds off to grab a new B time!

Senior 1

The Senior 1 group had 14 swimmers compete at the meet this past weekend. Coming off two very tough weeks of training, the swimmers were definitely feeling tired. Even being broken down they all stepped up and raced to the best of their ability. Many of them were right on their best times and some had some huge drops. This makes me very optimistic for what the group can do once we rest for our big meets in March. We will continue to train hard, and I am excited to see what this group can do moving forward.

Highlights

  • Anouk Balog: swam in her first meet since moving up to the group. She was feeling the increased practice load but still managed to be right on her best times in the 100 IM and the 50 fly. Expecting some very exciting swims once she is fully adjusted to the group.
  • Boston Borg: started off the meet with a bang dropping almost a half second in the 50 free. The rest of his swims were just off his best times.
  • Hailey Crawford: also swam in her first meet since moving up. She performed incredibly well despite being very tired. Her 100 free, 50 fly, and 50 free, were all right on her best times. Expect some big swims in her future as well.
  • Spandana Kannam: Put up some amazing performances dropping 3.5 seconds in the 50 breast and 2.5 seconds in the 50 fly.
  • Ben Lam: Has been working incredibly hard in practice and has started to get a better feel for racing. He put up some great swims dropping 3.9 seconds in the 100 free. He managed to drop in five out of his six races. As he continues to get more comfortable racing he will continue to improve.
  • Kyle Li: Had an awesome meet dropping time in three races. He was brave and took on the 1650 free for the first time, he settled into the pace perfectly and put up a great base line time for the event. He trains distance very well in practice and I am looking forward to seeing his improvement.
  • Vidhi Mehtrotra: Started out the meet a little sluggish on Saturday. She was determined to not let her first day bring down her second day's performance. She rallied and swam with much more fire going best times in the 50 fly and 100 IM and being right off her best time in the 100 free.
  • Anna Nguyen: Is just starting to get back into shape after missing several practices in the beginning of the season applying for colleges, something that paid off incredibly well as she got accepted to RICE. She competed very hard and even though her times were a little off was optimistic about what she can do moving forward.
  • Joseph Nguyen: Has been working very hard lately and it showed in his racing. He executed his races very well over the weekend and dropped time in four of his events. His big drops came in the backstroke events where he dropped almost 2 seconds in both the 50 and 100 back.
  • Sonny Nguyen: Had an awesome weekend of racing dropping time in four of his events and being just off his best time in the other two. He has phenomenal swims in the 50 fly, 50 breast, and 100 IM dropping over a second in all three races.
  • Dane Padgett: Competed at his first swim meet since he was 12. He had some amazing swims dropping time in everything he swam. He had great swims in the 100 free going 52 and dropping 9 seconds and the 100 fly going under the 1:00 mark and dropping 18 seconds.
  • Aadhav Saravanan: Has been crushing the distance sets week in and week out at practice. His hard work really showed in his 1650 free. He dropped over 1 minute and swam an awesome race. He was able to find the pace early on and then dialed it in only missing the pace on one single 50 throughout the entire race.
  • Shaur Shrivastava: Looked like a beast in the pool. He had great underwaters on all of his races. He went best times in three of his four races. In the 100 free he broke 1:00 for the first time in absolutely dominant fashion dropping 4.67 seconds to go 55.38.
  • Andy Wang: Has been working incredibly hard and has just been waiting for some breakthrough swims at meets. This weekend was exactly that for him. He started off dropping 3 seconds in the 100 breast and winning the race. He then continued to crush his races, in the 200 free he swam a perfectly steady race dropping 6 seconds and going under 2:00 for the first time.

High School

We had some great swims this weekend! Everyone had some good time drops. Here are some of the best swims for this group:

  • Kaler Duryee won Superstar of the Meet for our group by dropping time in every single event! He dropped -1.45 in his 100 Back, -3.39 in his 100 IM, -3.40 in his 50 Back, -2.66 in his 50 Breast, -2.60 in his 50 Fly, -1.53 in his 50 Free!
  • Evan Galuska dropped -1.62 in his 200 IM. He also swam the 200 Fly and 200 Breast for the first time!
  • Aarohi Gandhi dropped -2.15 in 100 Breast!
  • Varshini Hari swam the 1650 for the first time!
  • Rhia Kowalski dropped -2.25 in her 100 Breast!
  • Neha Phatek chopped off -5.74 in her 100 Fly and swam the 1650 for the first time! She also cut another -2.89 in her 100 Breast!
  • Paolo Villanueva dropped -2.71 in his 400 IM and swam the 1650 for the first time!
  • Samuel Yi dropped a whopping -11.96 in his 200 Breast! He then dropped another -2.93 in his 100 Breast and swam the 400 IM for the first time!

White Group

A large forklift-full of kudos to all White Groupers who attended the meet! We scored 33 new motivational times and minted 9 new B-time swimmers including a couple of BBs (go Dami and Molly!). We landed 78 first legal swims and dropped a cumulative 930 seconds from our personal best times! We also graduated nine swimmers to competitive swimmers with their first Wave meet - shoutout to Prisha Ahuja, Serena Zhang, Jamie Jiang, Charlie Page, Molly Page, Priyadarshi Lahiri, Jonathan Lui, Piper Wigand, and Ishaan Komakula!

So, obviously, we won.

A few shoutouts:

MOTIVATIONAL GRADUATIONS:

  • Lainey Meyer bagged her 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th motivational times at the meet. She is now an everything specialist!
  • Alison Wang earned her first B time in her 50 Back and didn’t know it until the next day. That swim makes her the second youngest Motive time achiever on the team!
  • Landon Yuan, with his amazingly aggressive glide, dropped 10 seconds off his 100 Breast for his first B time,. If you don’t understand how gliding can be ‘aggressive’, you should see Landon swim it.
  • Alizeh Kurji scored her first B time in her 100 Breast. She can do a solid glide, but she never had time to when racing! Now she knows that she doesn’t have time not to glide!
  • Emily Kehm also earned her first B time in her 100 BR. She is a ‘visual’ person, but now believes in things she can’t see…like the speed of gliding!
  • Dami Jung earned first BB time in her 100 BR, and yes, of course she glides. Her glide looks as if powered by mini-jet engines in her toes…but good gliders don’t need engines to fly!
  • Yihan Li was B-free until this meet, but something clicked for her recently, and she landed her first five B times, including her 200 IM!
  • Sepanta Rahimi snuck in 0.01 second below the B cut in his 100 Fly. It was his last event, on the last day, and he finished last in his heat, so he thought he fizzled when he hit a home run!
  • Charlie Page, at his first swim meet ever, bagged four shiny new B times in his 50 Free, 50 Breast, 50 Back and 100 Free. His 50 Back powered past B, touching just 0.3 seconds short of BB! And we have not worked on back much at all. Think what he might have done if we had ‘not worked’ on more strokes!
  • Molly Page - Most swimmers take a year or two to achieve a first B time. In her first swim meet ever, Molly earned Bs in every event, except her 50 Fly, where she pole-vaulted over B, to finish well into BB time zone. Her secret? Skills? Smiles? Yes, of course…and a flash flood-sized surge of raw power.

CLOSEST CALLS:

  • Tommy Ovendale dropped a cumulative 54 seconds off his personal bests at the meet, many of those dropped off recent swims. He especially went ALL-in for his 100 Free, burning 22.60 seconds off his time. If he had burned 22.62 seconds off, he would have earned his first B time ever! The next time Tommy squares off against the 100 Free, it’s going down.
  • Karina Maksyutov had a meet like Tommy’s. She dropped 49 seconds off her personal bests. Her largest drop was off her most recent times: 50 Free (-11.19s) and 100 IM (-23.82s). Her 23.82-second drop in her IM almost earned her a first B time, falling only 0.07 short! Don’t bet against this girl at the next meet…or ever!

SQUEAKY CLEANEST:

No DQs, no ‘no shows’, no time gained, no dramas…they have it together - or they’re very lucky! Deniz Cankaya, Anu Bathe, Prisha Ahuja, Maria Kokhan, Yihan, Lainey, Molly, Alison, Audra Whitbeck, Katie Yi, and Landon.

LOSS LEADERS:

In a meet where nearly every legal swim was a personal best time, you had to drop boatloads of time to stand out! And these swimmers did. In third place, Tommy lost 54.4 seconds total. In second place, Bani Bhuyan dropped 56 seconds, with her 100 Free power grip. And the loss-ingest winner of the meet: Eleanor Lopez, with staggering 60 seconds dropped, most of it off her 100 Free.

100 FLY FIRSTS:

100 Fly can be daunting! And we had a flock of flyers tackle it for their first time. Not one of them begged out, nerved out, or ‘accidentally’ missed the event. Just diving in is a win, when you’re diving in for your first 100 FL. Cheers to Veronika Fedotova, Abby Gray, Emma Henry, Vedah Tuladhar, Olivia Lui, Jonah Lynn, Andy Yang, Rihit Gandhi, Max Malinovskyi, Maria, Sepanta, Audra, Eleanor, Karina, and Dami. As a special note, Abby’s legal finish makes her the third fastest 8&U 100 Fly in Wave History!

IRONMEN:

Yihan and Arvin Kandiah were the last of White Group swimming in the meet, Sunday afternoon because they were our only 200 IM-ers. And Arvin requested it!! Heart of a lion.

Senior Prep

Sr. Prep swam outstanding in our meet. We had 43 new swims where a swimmer raced a race that they had never swum previously in a meet. We had 197 successful swims. 154 swims were best times, which is 78% of our races. We had another 19 swims that were within 0.01 to 0.50 of our best time. The average time drop for all swims was 2.94 seconds per race! This average includes anything we successfully swam and had a time in before, so for example, this average includes swims where swimmers added time. A very solid improvement for our first meet after December’s PNS Champs!
