February Wave Invitational Recap
February Wave Invitational Meet Recap
We came into this meet with many swimmers looking to make cuts for the various championship meets in March. We came out with many of those swimmers having achieved their goals!
We also saw lots of first-time swims in challenging events, and many swimmers taking their first plunge in a competitive meet. Congratulations to all our team!
Many thanks also to all our parent volunteers, whether as officials, timers, or other capacities. We could not have run the meet successfully without you!!
Wave on 3!!

Senior Epic
Senior Epic came strong to our last meet before Champs Season! After a full month of exhausting practices and excellent workouts, the group swam extremely well this weekend. We had amazing swims with very solid races and many swimmers achieved personal best times. A special shout-out to Alex Werth who got his first ever Sectionals cut and will be flying with the team to Arizona at the end of the month! Enjoy some highlights from our group:
- Andrea Wu was inspired last weekend and went 3 best times with an outstanding 200 Fly. Moreover, Andrea was able to swim less than half a second off in another three events.
- Renee Yin had an excellent meet and dropped time in the 100 Back after a 4-year plateau! She also had a best time in the 100 Fly and swam right at her times in the 200 Back and 200 Free. Renee is an example of perseverance and commitment to our group!
- Grace Liu has been swimming fast at practice and she did the same at the meet. Grace went a best time in one of her best events, the 100 Free, and crushed the 200 IM dropping more than 5 seconds.
- Kaitlyn Blackmon has been working on her technique and adjusting to her new strokes. Her outstanding swims were the longer events, 200 IM and 400 IM, where she looked strong and managed to finish both races swimming hard (and happy) until the end.
- Kyler Brumfield dropped almost 3 seconds in the 100 Back to add another A time to her collection. She also had a consistent 200 Breast and was excited with the result.
- Jenna Kimborowicz had a solid and strong 500 Free going only a second off her personal best. She also looked really good in the 100 Back where she swam right at her time.
- Ella Reedy did a great job on her Freestyle events and managed to swim right at her best times in both 50 and 100 Free. Besides that, she was satisfied with how she felt in the 200 Back.
- Melis Gursoy had her first meet in the past four months and was brave enough to swim the 400 IM in her preparation for Zones at the end of the month.
- Gianna Tan swam only two events on Saturday and left the meet because she was not feeling well. Gianna demonstrated excellent work ethic showing up and trying to swim that day.
- Alexander Werth dominated the weekend swimming 4 of 6 personal bests and qualified for his first ever Sectionals meet in the 200 Breast! Swimming strong from the beginning, he set the pace to achieve his goal and did it by far going a second faster than the cut. Overall, he dropped more than 2 seconds from his old time and was the happiest swimmer at the meet.
- Tyler Kong has been dropping time in the 100 Breast every time he jumps in the pool. This weekend was no different and he shaved off another 0.32 tenths of seconds to win one of the most competitive races this weekend. He also dropped almost 2 seconds in the 200 IM.
- Jaiden Sreenivasan had a solid meet going right at his times in the 100 Fly and 100 Back demonstrating strong and powerful dolphin kicks. He also updated his 200 Breast time dropping more than 5 seconds.
- Fredrik Larsen did a great job working on race strategies and trying new things. He was able to drop time in the 100 Breast and is looking forward to swimming hard at Champs.
- Alexandru Popov had many strong swims during the weekend, but his outstanding race was the 100 Breast where he shaved off another half second of his best time getting very close to the Sectionals cut.
- Owen Ledrick looked really good in all his swims, going less than a second off his best times in 3 events and also achieving a new personal best in the 200 IM by more than 2 seconds.
- Noah Sattari updated some old times in the 200 Fly and 200 Back, swimming really well and looking good in both races. He seems motivated to explore more of those 200 events after his excellent results.
- Blake Nilsen has been working very hard on his freestyle and swam right at his times in both 50 and 100 Free. Also, he had a strong 200 IM going only a second off his best time with consistent underwater dolphin kicks.
- Suhas Kannan has been working on his attendance with a more consistent schedule and managed to swim a best time in the 100 Breast. He had other great swims going right at his times in the 200 Free and 50 Free.
Senior 1
The Senior 1 Group had 21 swimmers compete at the Wave February Meet this past weekend. As a group everyone has been training very hard recently. We have been crushing sets and kept the yardage up quite high. We rested just 2 days for this meet and the swimmers absolutely rocked. Everyone achieved at least one new best time, some swimmers qualified for new champs meets, and a few swimmers achieved new bests in every race they swam.
Highlights
- Anouk Balog: Anouk has been training like a beast lately and it really showed in all her racing. She dropped time in 5 out of 6 races. She started the meet super strong, crushing the 500 free dropping 9.5 seconds and getting her first Senior Zones cut.
- Boston Borg: Coming off a very successful high school season, Boston continued to find ways to swim faster in the pool. He started the meet off winning the 500 free and dropping just a tiny bit of time. His biggest drops came in the 100 back and breast, where he dropped over 1.5 seconds in each.
- Carr Chellis: Carr is still recovering from some setbacks at the beginning of the year, but he isn’t letting that stop him from swimming fast. He was right on his best times in all his races then finished the meet off with a huge 21-second drop in the 200 IM.
- Ray Chen: Has been busy with other life things lately but still managed to find a way to turn in some super fast swimming. The freestyle events were awesome where Ray dropped again in the 50 free after going a best time just a month ago and turning in a huge swim in the 100 free dropping 3 seconds and finally getting their 100 free faster than their 100 Fly.
- Alex Claux: Continues to find success in the sprint events where he once again dropped in the 50 free. This meet we decided to try something a little different and take on the 200 Fly. He put up a great swim in that race keeping his stroke together the entire time and staying strong underwater throughout, all of this resulted in an awesome 4.5 second drop and a fire to continue swimming the race.
- Hailey Crawford: Another new addition to the group competing in just her second meet since joining Senior 1. She was dialed in for this one and dropped in four of her races. Her most exciting swim came at the end of the meet in the 200 IM where she dropped 1.15 seconds and barely held off a surging teammate for a spectacular finish.
- Grant Gallagher: Grant has really found his stride in the breaststroke and sprint freestyle events this season. For yet another meet he managed to drop time in the 50 Free, 100 Breast, and 200 Breast. He started the meet off winning the 50 Free in another best time and is well on his way to 22. Both breaststroke races were electric as he turned in amazing swims with very solid drops.
- Taryn Han: Turned in some very good swims over the weekend. She was right at or under her best time in all her events. Her biggest drop came in the 500 Free, a race she was dreading swimming at first, she crushed her old best time by dropping almost 35 seconds.
- Spandana Kannam: Spandana has been getting back into the swing of things and it is starting to show in her racing. She was close to her best times in several races. Her breaststroke training has been really good lately and that showed as she was only 0.2 from her best time in the 100.
- Aarjav Jain: Aarjav has been training mostly for middle distance this season and it paid off in a big way. He has achieved best times in all his 200 events this season. At the meet, he turned in a huge swim in the 500 Free splitting very evenly throughout the entire race and dropped 4 seconds.
- Ben Lam: After a long high school season, he was feeling pretty broken down, so he took a week off to get himself and his body feeling fresh. He returned to practice ready to get right back to work and it paid off this weekend. He was close to his best time in many events and had some very nice drops in the 100 back and 100 breast dropping 1.5 seconds in both races.
- Julia Larsen: Competed very hard in all her races over the weekend. She turned in an amazing swim in the 100 Fly dropping almost 2 full seconds and getting another Zones qualifying time to add to the six she already has. She is looking forward to competing at our Championship meets and swimming fully rested.
- Kyle Li: Kyle has really found his stride this season in the freestyle and backstroke events. He turned in amazing swims in the 100 Free and 200 Back. His best race came in the 200 Free where he dropped 1 second and put himself even closer to breaking the 2-minute barrier. His biggest drop was in the 100 back where he dropped 3 seconds.
- Vidhi Mehrotra: Only swam one day of the meet but really made it count. She achieved best times in 2 out of her 3 races. In the 100 Breast she dropped over a second and in the 100 free she dropped .5 seconds and edged even closer to breaking the 1-minute mark, next time out she will be 59.
- Joseph Nguyen: Joseph has really stepped up his training recently and it really showed at the meet. He went a perfect 6/6 for best times at the meet swimming well in every race. His biggest drop came in the 100 Breast where he went 5.9 seconds faster than his previous best.
- Sonny Nguyen: Sonny was another swimmer from the group who dropped time in every single event. He swam hard in all his races and looked very strong in the pool. His biggest swims were the 200 IM where he dropped 2.6 seconds and the 200 free where he broke the 2-minute barrier for the first time in dominating fashion by skipping 1:59 and going straight to 1:58.
- Cameron Piepkorn: Cameron decided to focus on some of the races he doesn’t swim as often at this meet and it paid off in a big way. He had a monster drop of 49 seconds in the 500 Free and crushing the 200 Free, going under 2 minutes for the first time.
- Aadhav Saravanan: Aadhav has been crushing the distance training sets at practice and it is really showing in his racing. He took on the 400 IM, 200 IM, and 200 Fly this weekend and achieved new best times in all three races. His butterfly looked so smooth, and he looks to continue to improve his 200 Fly.
- Shuar Shrivastava: Has been training quite well since the end of high school season. He has been working on his endurance and it is paying off as he was able to achieve new best times in both the 200 Free and 200 Back, dropping more than 3 seconds in both races.
- Artur Sobol: Has been focused more on his freestyle training lately hoping to get his 100 and 200 faster. At the meet he achieved best times in the 100 and 200 Free dropping 0.5 in the 100 and 3.1 in the 200.
- Andy Wang: Andy was the final swimmer in the group to drop time in all the races he swam. His sprint races and his longer races were both awesome. His biggest drop of 28.5 seconds came in the 500 Free. His other highlight swim was the 100 Fly where he was under the 1-minute barrier.

Black Sport
The athletes in Black Group have gained some good meet experience over the past several months, and it is showing at the meets in how they handle everything. This was a fun meet to watch, and while we still have a fair share of disqualifications yet in Fly and Breast, we had a number of athletes make it through those races successfully.
We have been going over the disqualifications with the athletes at practice, so they know what mistakes were made, and of course, we’ll continue to work on those both in and out of the water.
The following athletes complete first time races, meaning they were able to swim the race without a disqualification!

White Sport
Piles of kudos to hand out for some intrepid swims, and some shocking upsets (the good kind). We had two first-timers (Rayona Saraswat and Anika Arvan), 103 first legal swims, 34 new motivational times, and 9 motivational level firsts. We also dropped a cumulative 1300 seconds off our personal bests. That’s more than 21 minutes! And, most importantly, we had fun and looked great doing it.
This meet was also stunning for what didn’t happen: not a single DQ for a one hand touch on breast or fly, or back flip-over. Not in the 50s, not in the 100s, not in the 100 IMs, not in the 200 IMs! While it is sometimes the case that some judges are more inclined to some DQs, touches and turns are the easiest to see, and the most often DQ’d by nearly every judge. We only had one ‘accidental’ no-show though there were several ‘sprints’ to the block! We are earning better, harder, and stranger DQs! That’s a win.
MOTIVATIONAL GRADS: BB Firsts
- Emily Dong charged her 50 Back, dropping 6 seconds!
- Olivia Lui whittled down both her 50 and 100 Breast times to BB, with some slick diving, streamlining, and gliding!
MOTIVATIONAL GRADS: B firsts
- Abby Gray landed her first four B times in the 100 Back, 50 & 100 Breast, and 100 IM.
- Irene Qu committed to her glide in her 50 and 100 Breast, making it look easy!
- Audra Whitbeck got her heat back, and her hips up to score her first Bs in the 50 and 100 Back!
- Deniz Cankaya earned his first Bs in the 50 and 100 back with arms so fast they might be certified weapons!
- Aabha Tyagi earned her first B in her 100 Breast and didn’t know it! Many swimmers check B times for a coming event. Repeatedly! Aabha is not one of them, which may be why she got it. Breast can’t be brute forced!
- Tommy Ovendale earned his first B time in the 100 Free after narrowly missing it by 0.02 last meet! His head was down, his dive was long…and he hit what he aimed at!
BRAVERY AWARDS:
- Abby Gray and Karina Maksyutov DQd their backstroke flip-turns on Saturday, but that didn’t deter them from trying again on Sunday! Unlike most DQs, a backstroke flip-turn is a ‘challenge by choice’
- Oliva Kang was sure meets were designed for public humiliation, but she screwed her courage to the sticking point and landed 3/3 legally and several within spitting distance of B time territory!
CLOSEST CALLS:
- Karina Maksyutov for the second meet in a row she would have scored a B time…if her 50 Back flip-turn had been slightly more legal.
- Veronika Fedotova would also have had her first B time this meet in her 50 Back with a great flip turn!
- Grace Zhang swam her first 200 IM legally and fast, landing only 0.3 short of a B time. In a cruel twist of chance, she then missed the BB time in her 100 Breast by 0.01! In fact, the time on the board was a B time, but the reconciliation pulled up short.
- Bani Bhuyan shaved almost 4 seconds of her 100 Free time with some whip-like flip turns and smooth, power strokes, yet dropping all that time still left her 0.1 away from her first B time ever!
- Emily MacDonald tore 13 seconds off her 50 Fly to land just 1 second shy of a B time! She flattened out to power forward, not up and down.
SQUEAKY CLEANEST: 6+ swims, 6+ times, no DQs, no ‘no shows’, no time gained, no dramas… they have it together! Prisha Ahuja, Bani Bhuyan, Lucy Broyles, Deniz Cankaya, Emily Dong, Rihit Ghandi, Adam Kantor, Alice Khudyakov, Maria Khokian, Ishaan Komakula, Yihan Li, Jonathan Liu, Elizabeth Luo, and Emily MacDonald.
LOSS LEADERS: in a meet where nearly every legal swim was a personal best time, you had to drop boatloads of time to stand out! And these swimmers did that and more
- Losing 50s+: Emily MacDonald, Deniz Cankaya, Abby Gray
- Losing 60s+: Naureen Saneesh, Aabha Tyagi
- Losingest Winner: Arnold Tanto who lopped off a staggering 92.6 seconds with a nuclear-powered backstroke and a slick BR glide.
200y QUADRATHLON-ERS: this is the first event length where swimmers need more strategy than just “Go!” or “Go faster!” Energy craters, technique evaporates, and swimmers find out what they’re made of. This meet, we had 32 swim 200s for the first time! A lucky few swam both the 200 IM and the 200 Free: Grace Zhang, Andy Yang, George Ursulenko, Irene Qu, Molly Page, Lainey Meyer, Karina Maksyutov, Olivia Lui, Yihan Li, Alizeh Kurji, and Maria Kokhan!
Senior Prep
The Senior Prep group did well at the February Intrasquad. We achieved many new cuts for WA State Champs and Spring Fling. We swam 197 successful races with 127 best times, with an average time drop of 2.74 seconds per race. We also had 25 more swims that were within 0.01 and 0.5 of our best times. I am also very proud of the swimmers that swam a race for the first time. We had twelve new swims in the 500 Free and 200 Fly events. Barun, Oleg, Olivia, and Penelope swam the 500 Free for the first time, and Oleg, Nethaniah, and Kirsten swam the 200 Fly for the first time! Great job Sr. Prep! ¶ ¶
Big shout outs to our new AA motivational times achieved at this meet by: Adrian, Oleg, Kyle, Nik, and Ethan! We have lots of Green AA caps at practice lately.
