Washington State Champs meet recap
Washington State Champs Recap
What an exciting three days of racing to cap off the short course season for our 11-18-year-olds! Once more, Wave swimmers put up some fantastic times with several swimmers scoring. The team finished 8th out of 31 teams from across the state.
Purple Sport
Alex Shibalov was the only swimmer from the Sport team to qualify for the State Champs and what a meet he had, with two official best times, including a 17-second drop in the 100 Back and only two breaths in his 50 Free to jump from a 35 to a 31!
Age Group Select
Led by Ella Tulanon’s fabulous 14th place finish and 36-second time drop in the 1650 Free, AGS put together another amazing weekend of swimming, with every swimmer having at least one superb swim. Here are highlights for the other AGS swimmers:
- Ethan Chan dropped 9 seconds in his 100 Free, coming from behind in the second half to win his heat convincingly!
- Sophia Gorveatt broke the 1:19 barrier for the first time in the 100 Fly after several close calls!
- Tommy Henderson had four best times, highlighted by a 9-second drop in his 200 Back, and picked up three new B times!
- Nora Herman swam a beautifully paced 200 Free, dropping more than a second and just missed breaking the 2:30 barrier, going 2:30.01!
- Karolina Patusiak had four best times, highlighted by an incredible 200 Breast where she chopped off nearly 4 seconds after working hard the past month on improving her technique!
- Amelia Pletosu blasted her way to a 13.5-second drop in her 200 Back, executing flawless turns and perfect race strategy!
- Vien Pogue dropped time in five races, including a massive 15-second drop in her 200 Back!
- Aayush Rane had struggled to beat his best time in the 200 Back for several months, but he shattered that time, dropping more than 4 seconds!
- Ella Tulanon—in addition to her huge time drop in the 1650—also cut 31 seconds off her best 1000 Free time!
- Lasya Viswanadham swam her best 200 Breast ever in a beautifully executed race and was a key member of both medley relay teams!
- Kailyn Wing dropped nearly 7 seconds in her 200 Breast and picked up a B time in the race!
Senior 1
Senior 1 sent five swimmers to the State Championships this past weekend. I had a blast at the meet watching our swimmers obtain new best times and finish their season swimming well. All our swimmers qualified for finals in at least one event and were right on or achieved new best times. It was a fantastic start to the post-season for this group and I am excited to see what the next two meets have in store for us.
- Anouk Balog started off the meet with a huge bang dropping more than 2 seconds in the 200 Fly and qualifying for finals. She looked so smooth and strong in the water in such a tough race. In finals, she raced well and although was slightly slower than in prelims still went the second fastest time she ever has in the race.
- Alex Claux stepped up and made the trip down to participate in the 400 Medley and Free Relays. He swam a strong lead off leg of the 400 Free Relay going right at his best time and helping the team to a top 8 finish.
- Hailey Crawford had a very strong showing. She has been working on back and free at practice and it really paid off as she managed to drop 2.84 seconds in her 100 Back and 1.40 seconds in the 200 Free. She had a great lead off leg of the 400 Free Relay as well, going under 57 seconds for the first time.
- Taryn Han was right on her best times in all the races she swam. She started off the meet with a strong 100 Back, qualifying her for finals. In finals, she was able to race well and moved up a place from her prelims showing.
- Cameron Piepkorn finished the season on an absolute heater. He managed to post new best times in all but one race and qualified for finals in all his races. His biggest moment of the meet came in the 100 Breast final where he won the race and qualified for Senior Sectionals.
Senior Epic
The Senior Epic group sent two swimmers to the State Meet this past weekend. Both swimmers had amazing performances at the meet, achieving new best times and qualifying for finals. It was a great way for the group to start our post-season swimming and I am excited to see what the rest of the group can do moving forward.
- Owen Ledrick started the meet off with a strong swim in the 100 Breast that qualified him for finals; he would then go on to move up a spot in a great finals race. His biggest swim of the meet came in the 200 Breast where he dropped a half second, qualified for finals, and went under the 2:20 barrier, something he has been working towards all season.
- Noah Sattari was all business this weekend and it really showed in his swimming. He started off the meet with an awesome 200 fly dropping another 1.50 seconds, qualifying for finals, and having a super smooth and strong swim. He finished the meet on with another bang in the 100 Fly, dropping 1.47 seconds and earning his first Senior Zones cut.
Senior Prep
We had an outstanding State Champs Meet. The group had 108 successful swims where 61 swims were best times, which is 56% of all our races. We had another 19 swims that were within a 0.01 to 0.50 second of our best time. The average time drop for all swims was 2.1 seconds per race! This average includes anything we successfully swam and had swum before, including swims were swimmers added time. Really solid meet results, we had some impressive achievements in new AAA time qualifiers for Lena and Oleg, and new AA qualifiers for Anton, Joshua, and Cora!
