IMX & IMR Meet Recap!
IMX/IMR Meet Recap
What a wild weekend! Our swimmers faced a big challenge swimming all four strokes + an IM and they stepped up big time! Many swam events they had never swum, or had not swum in a very long time, and they performed like rock stars! Special congratulations to our #1 Swimmers (based on average points per event): Kyle Fontelera (Select Team) and Adi Beibit (Sport Team)!!
For those who are unfamiliar with the IMX (IM Extreme) or IMR (IM Ready) formats, the goal is to swim five races (the 13&Over IMX swimmers swim six) and then add up the Power Points earned. Power Points is a method that US Swimming uses to rank swimmers based on age, gender, distance, stroke, and time. A minimum of 1.00 points is awarded for a legal swim. This allows swimmers to be compared despite age and gender differences. The Wave swimmer who scored the most points in a single event was Jaiden Sreenivasan (729.35 points in the 500 Free)!
Of special note, Anton Mazepa went 5-for-5 not just in best times, but in new US Swimming Motivational Times with two new AA and three new A times!!
Overall results will be sent in a separate email.

Meet Recaps
Black Sport
First and foremost, Coach Erin and Coach Lysie want to acknowledge the athletes who swam all five races this past weekend (100 Free, 100 IM, 50 Fly, 50 Back, 50 Breast), and completed them legally without any disqualifications. All five have been doing a terrific job in practice working on things and the coaches were excited to have their efforts pay off! Awesome work!!!
- Tula Henkin
- Joy Huang
- Rinat Maksyutov
- Benji Ovendale
- Kenshin Yokoyama
Some other highlights:
- Madeline Godbout swam a legal 50 Breast as a 6-year-old. She’s been working super hard to get the skills down on that stroke, so we were pumped to see this happen for her!
- Blakely Hansen swam a legal 50 Breast just one week after turning 7…and after only 2 months on the team!
- Zoey Harmetz – We loved how she worked super hard to focus on her breaststroke kick and hold it legal for her 50 Breast race.
- Lexie Watrous, turned 7 in December, also put together a legal 50 Breast after lots of hard work!
- Ethan Pan popped onto the scene this weekend with a fantastic swim in his 50 Back and put all the skills together he’d been working hard on to swim his first legal 50 Breast.
- Olivia Horng really emphasized her kick in her 50 Fly, and she dropped almost 8 seconds in that race. She also did really well on the 100 Free, showing some good flip turn skills and posting her best performance in that one so far!
- Kaito Falk had his first meet with us and did well on the 100 Free. There was just a little hiccup midrace thinking he was done, but he jumped back into it and swam hard while sticking with breathing every 3 strokes for the full race!
- Rinat Maksyutov raced strong from the start of his 100 IM, but his 50 Breast looked really great as he really used his kicking skills to power his stroke!
These were some longer races for some of the athletes but many of the kids earned legal times in the 100 IM and 100 freestyle, making the coaches proud of them for knocking those out. Also of note, the kids are showing improvement with their butterfly strokes, both in the 50 Fly and the fly leg of the IM.
We had some wonderful 50 Back swims over the weekend from a whole bunch of kids: 40 total either first-time swims or new best times in that event. The kids showed some improved wall skills and kicking overall, which was great to see. Here’s the list of names from that event:

Thank you to families for sticking with the meet rules. We started off a bit rough in terms of getting the kids where they needed to be in the first race on Saturday, but we were able to make corrections, get everyone into that race, and things went much smoother from there.
The kids did a good job of noting what heat was running and getting to their start position for their races. They actually did really well with this. I’m certain the timers had a hand in that, so if you were timing and helping get kids to their heats, thank you.
Some of the kids didn’t like camping out behind the blocks for 20 heats, but 50s run fast and this allowed the coaches to be able to watch the swims instead of constantly herding individual heats from one end of the pool to the other. This also allowed the coaches to check heats as they were stepping forward to make sure everyone was there. There were just a couple miscues, but again, with the help of our officials and timers, we were able to get the kids into a subsequent heat.

Fantastic swimming Senior Prep!
Age Group Select
AGS showed up ready to race, with our newest swimmers especially revving it up. We had a great meet, outperforming even The Avengers with lots of first-ever events and a slew of best times. However, we also had more DQs than normal, mostly backstroke flip turns and illegal pulls on butterfly, so it’ll be back to the ol’ drawing board the next couple of weeks!
Tony Stark Awards
Two of our swimmers—Nora Herman and George Urselenko—came to the meet straight out of quarantine with no practices in the last two weeks to perform tremendously, thus earning Iron Man status. Not only did they race well, they both managed a big time drop (Nora dropped 7.5 seconds in the 200 IM and George dropped 5.16 seconds in the 200 Free)!
Captain Marvel Awards
Ally Yuan, Kyra Yuan, and Prisha Parikh would let nothing stand in their way as all successfully swam two new events without DQs (with Ally swimming three). Of those seven first-time swims, five were B times and one was a BB time!
Captain America Awards
Speeding faster than Captain America can hurl that vibranium shield, these athletes went a perfect 5-for-5 in best times, earning their Avengers star: Ellen Feng, Claire Gao, Olivia Liu, Prisha Parikh, Irene Qu, Aayush Rane, Audra Whitbeck, and Ally Yuan!!
Guardians of the Galaxy Awards
Swimming faster than Rocket can make a wisecrack, these swimmers earned their First BB Caps, all in the 100 Breast: Andy Yang, Grace Zhang, and Irene Qu!! Special mention to Beata Sobol for also achieving it in the 100 Breast via a massive drop!
Thor’s Hammer Awards
Our men saw several stupendous time drops, as if Thor’s Hammer was smashing away all resistance. Aayush Rane led our drops, crushing off 31.8 seconds in his 500 Free as he finally blasted past the 8:00 barrier as well as -12.22 in the 200 IM. He was closely followed by Bimu Beibit (-22.62 in the 100 Fly), Ethan Chan (-17.22 in the 100 Fly), Isshin Yokoyama (-12.04 in the 200 Free), Kumail Mukadam (-15.46 in the 500 Free), Andy Yang (-14.62 in the 200 Free and -10.96 in the 100 Fly), Deniz Cankaya (-12.01 in the 200 Free), Alex Lobdell (-3.00 and a new A time in the 100 Back), Tommy Henderson (-10.78 in the 200 IM), and Alex Arlouski (-11.37 in the 100 Breast).
Black Widow Awards
Swimming so fast, it’s almost as if you never saw these amazing women! Claire Gao was our champion of time drops, slashing off -16.90 seconds in the 100 Back, -18.03 in the 100 Fly, and -22.63 in the 200 IM to go with two new A times! Joining her in the quest were Olivia Liu (-12.21 in the 100 Back, -13.40 in the 200 Free, and -11.80 in the 200 IM), Irene Qu (-11.34 in the 100 Breast, -18.26 in the 200 Free, and -11.45 in the 200 IM), Yuzuki Ishizuka (-18.35 in the 200 Free and -11.26 in the 100 Back) Kamilla Bugaitsova (-8.56 in the 100 Fly), Ellen Feng (-11.34 in the 200 IM), Abby Gray (-16.12 in the 200 Free), Olivia Henaire (-16.15 in the 200 IM), Dami Jung (-17.47 in the 100 Back and -14.15 in the 200 Free), Molly Mayfield (-6.25 in the 100 Breast), Lainey Meyer (-8.04 in the 200 IM), Theresa Nguyen (-12.05 in the 200 IM), Rachael Rose (-20.53 in the 200 Free), Navya Sainani (-20.88 in the 200 Free), Sanvi Shrivastava (-8.89 in the 200 IM), Beata Sobol (-18.25 in the 100 Breast and -11.23 in the 100 Back), Alison Wang (-9.90 in the 200 Free), Audra Whitbeck (-11.19 in the 100 Fly), Kailyn Wing (-6.88 in the 500 Free), and Yihan Li (-3.19 in the 100 Breast).

White Sport
Congrats to all those who swam this weekend! We won! White Groupers piled up some impressive numbers: our 57 swimmers at the meet dropped a collective 944 seconds off personal best times over the course of 14,000 yards. If that were a relay, it would be 8 miles long! We landed 31 events for the first time legally, we earned 27 new motivational times, and 10 swimmers earned a first time on a new LEVEL (8 Bs and 2 BBs!). We also had another 6 swimmers qualify for the May Flowers Long Course meet: Emma Henry, Veronika Fedotova, Lucy Broyles, Fiona Herman, Eleanor Lopez and Emily MacDonald!
New COMPETITIVE Swimmers - We graduated 9 swimmers, to competitive swimmers in their first swim meet ever: congrats to Reagan Edwards, Jasper Huang, Ilia Maksimchuk, Aanya Sharan, Rachel Siu, Yan Wang, Olivia Wu, Arjun Yadav, and Henry Cheng who slam-dunked 4 of his 5 events legally. He only missed the 100 IM by a breast kick in fly. A first swim meet can be a bewildering and stressful experience so thanks also to the teammates who helped them figure it out.
MOTIVATIONAL GRADS:
BB Firsts:
- Maria Kokhan and Max Malinovskyi charged the 50 Back, both whittling down recent times to land in BB time territory…just! Maria snuck in 0.13 under the cut, and Max, a scant 0.03 in!
B Firsts:
- Anu Bathe 50 Back
- Lucy Broyles 100 IM, 50 Back
- Veronika Fedotova 100 IM, 50 Back, 50 Breast
- Emma Henry 100 Free, 50 Back, 50 Fly
- Fiona Herman 50 Back
- Adam Kantor 100 IM, 50 Breast, 50 Back
- Eleanor Lopez 50 Back (the wolf)
- Emily MacDonald 50 Fly (nicest girl on earth)
LOSS LEADERS:
- Lost 40s+: Landon Yuan (-43 seconds) and Emma Henry (-43)
- Lost 50s+:Katie Yi (-52.5) and Veronika Fedotova (-52)
- Losingest Winner: Emily Kehm (-65 seconds) led the pack by dropping more than 20 off both her 100 Free and 100 IM!
TIME FREEFALLER: Serena Zhang dropped 37 seconds off times that were less than 2 months old! They still had that ‘new time smell’. At this rate, she’ll be Olympic caliber in a year or two.
CLOSEST CALLS:
Vedah Tuladhur (50 Back) and Adi Beibit (50 Fly) landed only a couple kicks short of their first BB times (<0.5 away). Joshua Xia dropped 1.36 in his 50 Back to land 0.03 from his first B time. That’s just a finishing stretch!
SQUEAKY CLEAN: 5 swims, 5 times, no DQs, no ‘no shows’, no dramas…they have it together! Anika Arvan, Katie Yi, Vedah Thuladur, Jonah Lynn, Maria Kokhan and Fiona Herman.
ON FIRE: Michael Han, Landon Yuan, Elizabeth Luo, Karina Maksyutov, Eleanor Lopez, Adi Beibit, Lucy Broyles, Emma Henry hit nothing but net, landing every event legally and with time losses. Even off the young times! Even off the already fast times!
100 IM-LEGAL: Be especially proud of legalizing an IM, there are 40+ ways to become an outlaw! It’s a mental test…during a physical test…and they aced both: Michael Han, Elise Kabakci, Sepanta Rahimi, Rayona Saraswat, Derek Xu, and Ilia Maksimchuk (in his first meet ever!) Epic win, guys.
STRANGEST DQ: Emily MacDonald in her 50 Breast earned a DQ that I have never seen in a WAVE meet before! Her BR was ‘out of cycle’, because she pushed off the wall and did a BR kick before her first pull. Why 1-hand-touch when there are bigger, better and weirder DQs possible!?
BRAVEST DQs: Sepanta Rahimi, Ilia Maksimchuk, Jonathan Liu DQ’d their backstroke flip turn, turning onto their stomach a bit early. It’s brave, because backstroke flip turns are optional, yet much faster (done well). Better to dare greatly and fail the flip, than to rank with the poor spirits who never even try.
POWER FINISHERs: 100s swimmers who barely slowed down on the second 50.
- Amber Jiang dropped 5s in her second 50 of the 100 Free! She sped up when she got tired!
- Esha Bhatia only gained 0.77 in the second 50 of her first ever 100 Free, not giving up, or letting off even when muscles are maxed out!
Senior 1
The Senior 1 group had 19 swimmers compete at the IMX/IMR meet this past weekend. This group showed up ready to compete and they did an absolutely amazing job at racing hard through tough events. We saw a ton of time drops and had several swimmers trying out new races for the first time, many of them performing well in those races. We have been training super hard so far this season and to see the results from just a few short weeks have me incredibly optimistic about what this group will accomplish this season. We started off on a great note and I expect to just keep the ball rolling into our next meets.
Highlights
- Anouk Balog has been working on improving all her strokes and that really showed this weekend. She had an awesome 200 Back, dropping 3.65 seconds, and followed that up with an even better performance in the 400 IM, dropping 8.36 seconds.
- Boston Borg is coming off some knee issues that plagued the end of his last season. He has not let that stop him from working hard and turned in some awesome swims. He had monster drops in the 200 Back and 200 Breast, dropping 34 and 16 seconds respectively.
- Nik Brusilovski just moved up into the group and saw the increased training load pay off instantly as he put up several best times at the meet. He had a great 200 Fly, dropping more than 6 seconds. He wasn’t done yet though as he posted a massive 21-second drop in the 400 IM.
- Carr Chellis continues to work on recovering from some setbacks that have occurred at the end of last season and into the start of this season. Regardless, he still managed to turn in some incredible swims. He had an awesome 200 Back, dropping more than 12 seconds. His biggest drop of the meet came in the 500 Free where he had a huge improvement of more than 1 minute on his way to breaking the 6:00 mark for the first time.
- Ray Chen has been working incredibly hard in practice especially at aerobic freestyle sets. The hard work they have been doing certainly paid off as they posted best times in the 200 Back, 200 Breast, and 500 Free. The biggest drop came in the 200 Breast, where they dropped more than 9 seconds.
- Alex Claux has been very busy preparing for AP testing at school but has still managed to find time to keep up with his training in the pool. He has been working on increasing his aerobic capacity and being able to perform better in non-sprint events. The work clearly showed as he dropped 4.48 seconds in the 200 Breast.
- Henry Geitz, another newcomer to the group, had an absolutely fantastic meet. He showed up ready to swim and managed to drop time in every event he swam. His biggest swim of the meet was the 400 IM, which he swam for the first time and posted a BB time in the event.
- Kyle Li is a classic case of someone who comes to practice every day works very hard and sees the payoff at meets. He had a great meet, dropping time in the 200 Breast, 200 IM, and 500 Free as well as swimming the 400 IM for the first time. His most exciting race was the 500, an event he has specifically been working on, where he dropped 6 seconds and broke the 5:30 barrier for the first time.
- Vidhi Mehrotra had a great meet, posting huge time drops in the 500 Free and 200 Back. Her most impressive races were the 400 IM, which she tackled for the first time and did an incredible job. She's ready to continue to swim the race and work to improve.
- Ethan Na had a great meet across the board dropping time in all but one race. He posted a monster swim in the 200 Fly, dropping almost 5 seconds and breaking the 2:20 barrier. He also turned in a huge 200 Back, just barely missing breaking that same 2:20 barrier.
- Vincent Ngo has refound his fire and passion in the pool and it has shown in both his practice habits and meet performance. While he mostly fancies the sprint events, he gladly took on the longer races and saw some great success. His best race was the 200 Back where he dropped 5.84 seconds, while his biggest drop of 14 seconds came in the 500 Free.
- Sonny Nguyen continued his streak of dropping time in at least one race at every meet. He turned in some stellar performances and is ready to get back to work to keep getting faster and faster. He had massive drops of more than 4 seconds in the 200 Back, 200 Breast, and 400 IM.
- Leon Oks competed in his first meet as a Wave swimmer and made quite the splash in the process. He has been training very hard and has been showing improvement in the pool each week. He swam the 200 Breast, 200 IM, and 500 Free. He is excited to have some times on the board and is looking forward to improving upon those moving forward.
- Aadhav Saravanan has been working on training for the IM events and that training is starting to show. He posted a wonderful 1.37-second drop in the 200 IM. Not satisfied yet, he is ready to keep working on those events and working towards his goals.
- David Sersanti Fasulo competed at his first meet as a Wave swimmer. He has some things we need to work on to avoid DQs, but he swam very hard and raced well. He posted an official time in the 500 Free.
- Boris Shakov had an absolutely fantastic meet, dropping time in every event that he swam. His short time with the group has been very positive for him as he is training hard and seeing that training pay off in the pool right away. His best race was the 400 IM where he dropped 9.67 seconds and just missed breaking the 5:00 barrier. Next time out he will crush that mark.
- Shaur Shrivastava has been working on improving his aerobic endurance and has been looking for success in some longer races. This work has clearly paid off as he turned in best times in the 200 IM, 400 IM, and 500 Free. His biggest drop was a monster 41 seconds in the 500.
- Artur Sobol has been busy with school preparing for upcoming AP tests. This meet was a good experience for him to gauge where his training is at. He is prepared to get back to work and get himself back to top form.
- Dylan Vu had a fantastic meet, dropping time in several events and even taking on a new race. He posted amazing 16-second drops in both the 200 Fly and the 200 Breast. Even more impressive was his 400 IM, swimming it for the first time and breaking the 5:00 barrier. I’m looking forward to seeing what the rest of the season brings.
- Andy Wang trains hard and it is so wonderful to see his hard work pay off in the pool. In preparation for this event, he has been working more on breaststroke, that work clearly paid off as he dropped 13.09 seconds in the 200 Breast. That work also helped him in his 400 IM where he dropped 25 seconds and broke the 5:00 mark.
