SSCD Dolphin Splash Meet Recap

Our Sport Team was able to race on short notice at Kamiak High School May 21 and those who attended churned many fantastic swims! Our top swimmer was Adi Beibit, who broke a team record for the second weekend in a row, this time in the 8&Under Boys 100 Fly! Here are the highlights for each group.

Purple Group

We had a solid meet for Purple group who attended the SSCD meet. Shout outs go to Kunaal Kadam and Roshni Padmanabhan for getting new B times in 50 Free!! Some other star swims include:

  • Tvesa Bansal for dropping over 5 seconds in 50 Back and Free
  • Arya Bhatt for dropping almost 9 seconds in 100 IM
  • Neel Borate for dropping over 7 seconds in 100 Breast
  • Evan Deng for dropping over 6 seconds in 50 Breast
  • Shayan Gavandi dropping just under 8 seconds in 50 Breast
  • Oliver Lee dropping over 7 seconds in 50 Back
  • Ahila Mugundan dropped just over 5 seconds in 50 Free
  • Ela Sakin for dropping over 7 seconds in 100 Breast
  • William Scott dropped just under 9 seconds in 50 Breast
  • Jonathan Yu dropped over 7 seconds in 100 Breast

Great work to all the Purple group swimmers who attended this meet!!

White Group

The Dolphin Splash Meet was a coup for White Group. We dropped time like it’s hot and had fun doing it. We had 26 White Groupers trek over to Kamiak to drop 430s over the course of 5600 yards. We landed 21 events legally for the first time, we earned 14 new motivational times, and graduated four swimmers to the next motivational level! One White Grouper even broke a team record…but ‘broke’ is too weak a word.

RECORD BREAKER

  • Adi Beibit…shattered…the Wave Team record for 8&U Boys 100 Fly, besting the previous time by 17 SECONDS! Normally, this is an event where swimmers 'fall off the energy cliff' early, swimming the second 50 in 'survival mode' (i.e., much slower!!). Gaining 10-15 seconds on the second 50 is fairly normal for a first 100 Fly....but Adi gained a bare 2s in his second 50 as if he were game to keep going! Next time, it’s the 200 Fly!??

FIRST MEET MASTERS

  • Zach Zhang and Ethan Marnadi hit nothing but net in their first swim meet ever. Both swam 3 events for 3 legal finishes and 3 shiny new times! More importantly, they had a great time, and left hungry for more. Zach even landed his very first swim, 50 Back, just 0.02 short of a B time! That is a lot of firsts.

MOTIVATIONAL GRADS: These swimmers earned their first ever B times at this meet!

  • Harper McDonnell - 50 Back, 100 Free
  • Joshua Xia - 50 Back, (and his 100 Back was barely 0.5s off a B time)
  • Bani Bhuyan - 100 Free, 100 IM, and 100 Fly! She dropped 40 seconds on her 100 Fly to land 6 seconds under the B cut, and a well on her way to a BB!
  • Priyadarshi (Alap) Lahiri cropped times from three months ago! He dropped 30 seconds off a 50 Fly time from March. This is easily the fastest improvement I've ever seen! And not a moment too soon as this was his last meet as a 10&Under! Fantastic birthday present (5/30).

LOSS LEADERS (Total time lost over all events at the meet)

  • Lost 30s+: Emma Henry (-38 seconds), Piper Wiegand (-36)
  • Lost 40s+: Bani Bhuyan (-46)
  • Lost 50s+: Priyadarshi (Alap) Lahiri (-56) His times aren’t just dropping, they’re free-falling!
  • Losingest Winner: Keshav Iyer dropped 63 in just three events!

CLOSEST CALLS

  • Zach Zeng missed his first B time in his first event of his first meet by 0.02. Shouldn’t have cut his fingernails that morning!
  • Derek Xu dropped 4 seconds in his 100 Breast to land 1 second short of a first B. Then he dropped 3 seconds in his 50 Breast to land 0.3 short of a B time! He would have landed a B for sure in a 25 Breast. Can’t wait.

STRANGEST DQ

  • Adam Kantor is a seasoned competitive swimmer, but even good swimmers forget to touch a wall in freestyle. Who has that kind of time when you’re racing?!

HEARTBREAKER

  • Henry Cheng finished his 100 Breast just one hand short of a first B time! One hand short of a two-hand touch on a turn (for which he was DQd). Happily, that’s an easy fix.

Black Group

Our Black Group athletes at this meet had a strong showing, and the coaches as always, had fun seeing what they have been working on in practice show at the meet.

  • Arseniy Ashikhmin completed his first legal 25 breast, and worked hard to remember to do his arms and finish correctly. Super pumped to see the effort on that race!
  • Aman Bhatt completed three new races for the first time- 50 Free, 25 Breast and 25 Fly. Great job Aman!
  • Lucas Deng completed the 100 IM and 25 Fly for the first time in addition to swimming a strong 25 Breast race.
  • Mira Erdim used some strong effort and strong kicking in her 50 Free and 25 Back races and looked really strong in those!
  • Avni Garg completed her first 25 Fly, and looked improved in her Freestyle and Backstroke races as well.
  • Thomas Godbout looked the best we’ve seen him look so far in his Breaststroke and Butterfly races, and the coaches feel he is getting close to a breakthrough in those.
  • Blakely Hansen completed the 25 Back and 25 Free for the first time.
  • Tula Henkin has been putting in some good effort at practice and she looked especially great in her 25 Back at this meet.
  • Joy Huang did a nice job of racing at this meet, and put a really good effort into her 25 Breaststroke
  • Bella Jiang completed her first 100 IM, and raced really well in her other two events
  • Owen Jones completed his first 100 IM and 25 Fly, as well as showing a much-improved breaststroke
  • Jackson Neurath swam his first meet with Wave but looked really strong in his events.
  • Andrew Ouyang had three very good races and continues to make nice strides at practice.
  • Benji Ovendale has really worked hard at his butterfly and that showed at this meet.
  • Xander Ritscher Osorio completed his first 25 Breast, super awesome!
  • Ata Sakin has been really focusing in at practice, and he completed his first 25 Breast in addition to some excellent showings in his other races.
  • Alex Wang raced super well in his 25 Back, and really looked fantastic in that race.
  • Landon Wang had a terrific 25 Free
  • Lexie Watrous looked great in her 25 Fly, as well as her 25 Free
  • Alyssa Yang has been awesome at practice, so her meet performances were not surprising, with a first time 50 Fly, and two excellent races in her 50 Breast and 25 Back.
