IST June Open Meet Recap

Wave arrived with a large contingent of swimmers ready and willing to swim lightning fast in the sweltering heat of Snohomish Aquatic Center on June 25-26. Came. Saw. Conquered!

The star of the meet for Wave was Kyle Fontelera, who achieved a AAAA time in his 50 Fly in his final meet as a 12-year-old. Congratulations, Kyle!!

Senior Prep

Senior Prep swimmers did fantastic in all sessions with many achieving great time drops!

  • Neil Rawal dropped time in 3 out of his 6 swims. He swam the 200 IM with an aggressive stroke and attacking those walls and getting him a -12.76 time drop! He had a beautiful stroke even when he was getting tired.
  • Daniel Chen had three best times and three more swims that were just inches away from best times, including his first-ever 36 in the 50 Breast!
  • Kyle Fontelera, besides his AAAA time in the 50 Fly, went 5-for-6 in best times, and missed his 100 Free by only 0.08! He won five races, including an incredible 200 Free where he was tied at the halfway point, then pulled away to win by more than half a length!
  • Lauren Hizzey finished Top 8 in every race including two 2nd places and three new BB times. Her highlight was the 200 Free where she chopped off more than 17 seconds and narrowly out touched an opponent to pick up second place!
  • Shir Netz had a perfect 6-for-6 meet, topped by her new BB time in the 50 fly where she jumped all the way from a 37 to a 33!
  • Vien Pogue also dropped time in every race and picked up three new BB cuts, highlighted by her 100 Free where she smashed the 1:10 barrier, going a 1:08.09!
  • Liya Wu was not to be outdone, garnering a perfect meet as well + four new BB cuts. Her top swim was the 200 Free where she cut off 13 seconds, breaking both the 2:40 and 2:30 barriers in a single bound, and picked up her highest finish of the meet!

Senior 1 & Senior Epic

The Senior group had some quality swims this past Weekend. Aarjav Jain held it down for Senior Epic this past weekend working hard on back and free, ultimately dropping almost 2 seconds in his 100 Fly and getting himself a new B time. Hailey Crawford worked hard on backstroke corrections this past meet, as well as staying within than a second of her 50 Free and 200 IM best times. Shaurya Shrivastava worked on pulling out some fast walls and finishes within his races, as well as staying less than a second off his best times in 50 Free and Back. Artur Sobol had some strong quality swims staying less than a second off his best time in 50 Fly. Vincent Ngo had some fast swims putting in his all and ultimately dropping more than 11 seconds in his 100 IM.

Purple Group

We had a fantastic meet this weekend ultimately leading in every swimmer dropping time in at least two of their events! A special shout out goes to Oliver Wang for getting his A time in 50 Fly, going a 30.61!! Some other highlights include:

Age Group Select

AGS saw a multitude of excellent swims, new best times, and new cuts. We were led by Kailyn Wing’s first-ever 400 IM, an event that she came from behind to win by a full length! Six of our swimmers won at least one event and most finished in the Top 8 at least once. We also saw seven swimmers go a perfect six-for-six in best times, with everyone else earning a minimum of two new best times!

  • Ellen Feng earned her second A time winning the 50 Fly, one of five races that she won! One of those races included the 200 Back, a distance rarely swum by 10&Unders!
  • Nora Herman had best times in every event and swam her first-ever 200 Back
  • Dami Jung earned five new motivational times, including 3 new BB cuts. The only race she didn’t get earn a new cut was her 100 Breast…but she dropped 8.28 seconds and won the event!
  • Richelle Li had five best times, including her first-ever 500 Free. In the other four races, she dropped 50 seconds!
  • Lainey Meyer had four best times, highlighted by a beautifully swum 200 Free where she dropped almost 10 seconds!
  • Kumail Mukadam had three best times, one of which—his 200 Back—was the first time he’d ever swum the race…and he made his first-ever PNS Champs cut!!
  • Aayush Rane went six-for-six in best times, including his first-ever 200 Breast!
  • Sanvi Shrivastava also had six best times as well as two new BB cuts! She also won the 50 Breast and picked up four 2nd places!
  • Beata Sobol proved that all things are possible! She earned a BB time in all 6 events, including the 50 Breast, where she smashed off 11.18 seconds! Beata has worked very hard on not allowing her breaststroke to be her worst stroke and it paid off big time: she is now officially fast in every stroke! All that on top of two first places!
  • George Ursulenko added six new best times and two new B times to his collection, including a crushing 11.56-second drop in his 100 Free!
  • Kailyn Wing not only won the 400 IM, she had five best times and missed a sixth by only 0.28 seconds!
  • Andy Yang also had five best times, all of which were new B times, including his first-ever 500 Free. His only non-best time was only 0.77 seconds off and four of his best times saw improvements of 5.5 to 9 seconds!
  • Isshin Yokoyama blasted his way to six new best times and four new BB cuts, including first-ever 500 Free! He also smashed 11.23 seconds off his 100 IM best time!

Black Group

The Black Group had 29 athletes at the meet, and the athletes showed some significant strides. Per our quick discussion with the athletes at practice-

  • Athletes set themselves up to have good swims at meets by doing the simple things at practice; putting in good effort, listening to the coaches and thinking about what they are doing, being coachable.
  • This are no guarantees in swimming, but by doing those things noted above, you make it more likely to have a positive outcome at a meet.
  • There will be ups and downs from meet to meet, but over time, if athletes are taking care of business at practice, they are likely to see they are making progress in their races.

Moms and Dads need to understand this, too!

The coaches were excited for the athletes to accomplish so many first-time swims (noted below), but just as excited to see them implementing good breathing plans on their freestyle races; an important but often overlooked part of good racing. First time accomplishments include:

  • Amaan Bhatt completed his first 100 Breast, which is awesome as he just nailed his breast kick down over the past month
  • Norah Braun completed her first 100 Breast and 100 IM
  • Qiqi Cao completed his first 100 Breast and 50 Back
  • Yushi Chong completed her first 50 Free

White Group

Kudos to the 24 swimmers who represented White group in the June IST meet: they swam 5000 yards in 53 events and they did it 450 seconds faster than their last best times. Extra kudos to our ten 200 IM-ers, who all did it legally in spite of 50+ possible DQs: Emily Dong, Fiona Herman, Jonah Lynn, Anu Bathe, Alap Lahiri, Ahana Bhattacharya, Adam Kantor, Rihit Gandhi, Aabha Tyagi, and Arvin Kandiah

  • CERTIFIED CHAMPION: Ahana Bhattacharya scored a ticket to Age Group Champs in her 100 Fly (kind of a big deal!).
  • MOTIVATIONAL GRADS: first ever B times at this meet!
    • Zach Zang - first B in 50 Back… and almost B in his 100 Back by “delay initiating turn”
    • Arvin Kandiah - first B in 50 Back … missed his 2nd B in his 100 Breast by a flutter kick.
  • LOSS LEADERS: total time dropped at the meet
    • Lost 20 seconds+: Vedah Tuladhar (-27), Prisha Ahuja (-21)
    • Lost 30 seconds+: Ahana Bhattacharya (-31), Anu Bathe (-31 including -27 seconds in his 100 Back)
    • Lost 40 seconds+: Maria Kokhan (-43), Arnold Tanto (-47), and Alap Lahiri (-48) who swam faster splits in his hundreds than in his 50s for both Back and Breast!
  • LOSINGEST WINNERS:
    • Jonathan Lui (-56) off recent times - only 1.5 months old for most!
    • Leo (-62) off old times and time trial times!
  • Legal Losses EVERYWHERE: Ahana Bhattacharya, Rihit Gandhi (-27 in 6 events), Jonathan Lui (-56 in more 50s than 100s!)
  • CLOSEST CALLS:
    • Rihit Gandhi – dropped 26.6 seconds, landing close to B times everywhere, but closest in his Breast. He swam a 100 Breast with a split that landed just inside B time, but his 50 Breast was just over.
    • Adam Kantor - 100 Breast barely 1 second from a Champs Qualifying time! Finished 2nd in the 10&U boys in the 200 IM & 3rd in his 200 Free.
  • STRANGEST DQs: Prisha Ahuja, Emily Dong, Adam Kantor (in Back and Free!) are all seasoned meet swimmers, but even good swimmers forget to touch a wall in Freestyle. Who has that kind of time when you’re racing?!
  • HEARTBREAKER: Henry Cheng’s goggles came off diving in for his 100 Breast, the event he is best at (so far). As a result, he ended up DQ-ing it, sadly. Then Sunday morning, his goggles came off diving in for his 200 Free…but he finished legally! Mind over water.
