Summer Sectionals Meet Recap
WAVE kicked off our Champs Season with a fantastic week at the Speedo Summer Sectionals where everyone swam pretty well!! Seven Senior Epic athletes swam in Mt. Hood, Oregon, and it was very exciting to see them performing at a higher level meet, going best times and qualifying for finals. Our achievements in numbers were:
- 59 Points Scored
- 18 Personal Best Times
- 3 Finals
- 2 Team Records (Boys 15-16)
- 1 Futures Cut (first time qualifier)
Enjoy some highlights from our swimmers:
- Andrea Wu: 50, 100 & 200 Free, 100 & 200 Fly. Andrea had only three days of rest for Sectionals. Andrea Champs Meet will be Futures Championships this week and Sectionals was a great opportunity for Andrea to work on details and race strategies leading into taper time. Andrea dropped time in the 200 Free and 200 Fly, and went less than a second off in all the sprint events.
Fun fact: Andrea is getting ready to go to WPI (Worcester Polytechnic Institute) in August. Andrea is excited to swim for them and start a new chapter in college. Good luck and you are welcome to swim with us next summer!
- Kyler Brumfield: 400, 800 & 1500 Free, and 100 Breast. It's impressive to see what Kyler did at Sectionals with a very short time she had to recover after being sick three weeks before the meet. Despite that, Kyler managed to swim a personal best in the 400 Free with a solid 5 second drop! She was also able to swim a strong 1500 Free on the last day finishing the meet with a big smile and very sore arms!
Fun fact: This was the first time Kyler swam at Summer Sectionals (LCM). Yay!
- Ella Reedy: 100 & 200 Back, and 100 Free. Ella has been committed to her swimming for years and despite a few hurdles this season she had strong swims and was proud of her results at Sectionals. She swam only 0.11 off her best time in the 100 Free and had very solid backstroke races, especially the 200 Back.
Fun fact: Ella is also saying goodbye to WAVE. She will be heading off to Occidental College in August where she will continue to pursue her swimming career. Good luck and you can always come back to swim with us next summer!
- Fredrik Larsen: 100 & 200 Back, 200 & 400 IM, 100 Free, and 200 Breast. Fredrik’s Champs Meet will also be Futures Championships and he used Sectionals to tune up his game and work on race strategies for Futures. He dropped time in three events and went less than a second off his personal best in the other three swims. His standout swim was the 200 Back where he dropped time in the prelims earning a second swim in finals, then dropping time again in the evening. He scored 3 points for WAVE.
Fun fact: Fredrik is going to his first Futures Champs this week where he qualified in two events (100 & 200 Back).
- Jaiden Sreenivasan: 400, 800 & 1500 Free, 400 IM, and 100 Breast. Jaiden went a best time in all five events (twice in the 400 IM and 400 Free) and got his very first Futures Cut in the 400 IM with a massive 32 second drop from last year. He also set two Team Records (Boys 15-16), achieving new AAAA Times along the way: 400 IM (10th place) and 800 Free (9th place). Besides that, Jaiden also qualified for finals in the 400 IM and 400 Free and had a phenomenal 45-second drop in the 1500 Free. Jaiden scored 56 points for WAVE.
Fun fact: Jaiden swam a total of 4000 yards (just racing) at Sectionals. That explains why he was eating two full portions of pasta with chicken every night!
- Alex Popov: 100 & 200 Breast, 200 & 400 IM. Popov came for his first Sectionals meet and brought home three personal bests. He has been swimming well the whole season and it was no different in Oregon. His strongest swim was the 100 Breast where he dropped almost 2 seconds, broke the 1:10 barrier (1:09.60) and got very close to Futures Cut (less than a second off)! He also dropped 6 seconds in the 400 IM where he has improved in all strokes including his backstroke.
Fun fact: Popov was the last swimmer in the group to qualify for Summer Sectionals (he qualified in May) and has proved to be a great LCM swimmer.
- Nicholas Imig: 50 Free and 200 IM. Nicholas joined our group only on the last day of the meet. He is off season from college and has been training a few days a week with our group. He swam a best time in the 200 IM and went a second off his best in the 50 Free after only 15min of rest between events.
Fun fact: Nicholas will be training with his team at Seattle University starting his second year soon. You are welcome to come back next summer too!
Congrats everyone for the excellent work done this year! Sectionals was Epic!
