Black and Purple Meet Recap

Black and Purple Intrasquad Meet!

What an exciting start to the 2022-23 Short Course Season! First came the very fun Saturday morning practices for Black Team at Redmond and for Purple Team at Juanita with a boatload of fantastic, creative posters! A huge shout out to our Senior Team, who stepped up big time to teach stroke and turn techniques to the younger kids, and another shout out to Steven Blackman and Coach Chad for all their organizational efforts for this annual event! Many thanks to all our officials and parent volunteers who stepped up to make the meet possible!

Senior 1

The Senior 1 Group had 19 swimmers compete at the meet this past weekend. Even though we are still pretty early in the season, this group has been training very hard and pushing themselves each week. The training they have been doing has already started to pay off as many crushed their best times. Several of them are swimming as fast right now as they did at end-of-season taper meets last summer. This bodes well for where this group will be at the end of this season. I am excited to see how fast they can swim and what they can really push themselves to accomplish. Highlights include:

  • Nik Brusilovski has been working super hard in the pool and it showed as he had two monster drops in the 50 and 100 Back. He is excited to swim some of the longer races at the next meet and crush those as well.
  • Rik Brusilovski put in the work as well and saw amazing results dropping time in the 50 Breast and fly breaking the 30-second barrier for the first time in the 50 Fly. He was just off his time in the 200 IM where he had an epic race with his teammate being neck and neck right down to the finish.
  • Daniel Cho was a man on a mission in the breaststroke events. He had awesome swims in both the 50 and 100 dropping almost 2 seconds in the 100 and winning the event. He is excited to see where he can get by the end of the season.
  • Hailey Crawford was fending off an illness as well as an arm injury that has hampered her a little bit this season. She didn’t let that stop her from putting her all into every race and she was right on her best times in the 50 Breast and Back. She is ready to get back to work and swim fast moving forward.
  • Aarohi Gandhi has been putting her all into every practice, which you can see on her face at the end of sets. All this hard work has already started to pay off as she had a huge swim in the 50 Free dropping half a second and going under 29 for the first time.
  • Henry Geitz never misses practice and never complains during sets. His positive attitude has really helped him start to see more and more success in the pool. He came out and went best times in every event with an absolutely insane 4-second drop in the 100 Back.
  • Peter Hansen has been working hard on his technique and those small changes are starting to be reflected in his racing. He had an awesome day going best times in all his events. His biggest improvement came in the 50 Free dropping almost 1 whole second and closing in on going sub 26 in the event.
  • Iris Huang may be quiet on deck, but she can really make some noise in the pool! She turned in some great swims at the meet. She had a phenomenal 200 IM, dropping 4 seconds to close out the meet.
  • Rashmi Joshi had a great meet. She has been training hard and it showed in her racing. She turned in great swims in all her events. Her biggest drop came at the end of the day in the 200 IM where she dropped 2 seconds, turning in an awesome swim to end the meet.
  • Aditi Kandiah has been showing improvement day to day at practice as she is getting stronger and her endurance has been steadily increasing. This showed as she had great swims across the board. Her biggest drop was in the 50 Back where she improved by 2 seconds and knows that she has more in the tank to drop even more the next time out.
  • Kyle Li has been mostly training for the middle distance and distance events, but he didn’t let that stop him from turning in some great swims in the sprints. He was right on his best time in all his events and turned in a great 100 Free executing the race strategy well and swimming both 50s well.
  • Ethan Na showed up with his game face on ready to swim fast and that is exactly what he did. He had great races in both the 50 and 100 Fly swimming to a first-place finish in both events and breaking the 1:00 barrier for the first time in the 100.
  • Vincent Ngo has been incredibly busy with college prep, but he didn’t let that stop him from turning in some good swims at the meet. His 100 Free was close to his best time and he swam incredibly well with good speed throughout the entire race and didn’t slow down at the end of the race. He is excited to get back to work and see what he can do to wrap up his Wave career.
  • Joseph Nguyen has been getting stronger and stronger both in and out of the water and it is showing in his racing. He was right on his best times in two of his races and had a killer 50 Breast dropping half a second.
  • Sonny Nguyen has been showing great leadership this season and has been training hard. He had a huge 1-second drop in the 50 Fly then was right on his best time in the 200 IM in a race where he was even with another swimmer all the way to the finish and pulled out the win with some great freestyle closing speed.
  • Neha Phatak is a newcomer to the group and the increased training intensity has paid off instantly for her. She turned in best times in all her races. She was all smiles at the end of the 50 Fly after dropping 3 seconds in the race.
  • Neil Rawal had a great meet, dropping time in all his races. His biggest drop came in the 50 Breast where he beat his old time by 4 seconds. He was happy with his swims but knows he can go even faster and is eager to keep training hard and swimming fast.
  • Dylan Vu has been working hard to improve his technique and stamina in practice. This really showed in his racing as he had two great swims in the 50 and 100 Back. In the 100, he dropped more than half a second and is well on his way to breaking the 1:00 barrier.
  • Rina Yuan was on a mission at this meet. She has been working hard to improve her longer sprints and that showed instantly in the pool. She went out and absolutely dominated the 100 Free, dropping 1 second and winning the event.

Senior Epic

Senior Epic swimmers were excited to finally race again after their training break. We swam hard during the week and the group did really well with many solid swims on our first meet of the SC Season. The meet was also a great opportunity to update their 50 times since senior athletes do not swim 50s often during the season. Enjoy some highlights from our group:

  • Anouk Balog came ready to swim fast and dropped almost 1 full second in the 50 Breaststroke.
  • Boston Borg dropped time in all his 3 events with an outstanding swim in the 100 Free where he dropped a solid 1.36 seconds and got an A time.
  • Raymond Chen swam some off events this meet and dropped almost 12 seconds collectively.
  • Jenna Kimborowicz had a strong 200 IM demonstrating good improvement on the breaststroke leg.
  • Fredrik Larsen has been working hard on his underwater dolphin kicks and did a great job executing them in all his races at the meet.
  • Owen Ledrick was challenged by me to beat his own 50 Breast time in the 50 Back and he almost did it. Both races were a best time.
  • Alex Popov was super excited after swimming the 100 Fly under the 1:00 barrier for the first time (58.78).
  • Lola Reynolds got best times in both 50 Back and 50 Breast, including a full second drop in the breaststroke.
  • Aadhav Saravanan had solid swims in all his events and dropped a half second in the 50 Back.
  • Noah Sattari: has been improving his breaststroke technique and had a great 3-second drop in his 100. He also went a best time in the 50 Fly.
  • Jaiden Sreenivasan turned on his sprint mode and got a best time in both his 100 Back and 50 Free.
  • Alex Werth had a very solid swim in the 200 IM and also swam right at his time in the 50 Fly.
  • Renee Yin had a strong meet swimming well in all her events, especially the 100 Free.

I am looking forward to our next meet in October! Embrace the grind and have fun!

Age Group Select

We have been training hard for the past few weeks, and that hard work paid off some very big dividends for AGS with several huge time drops, four new Motivational Caps earned, and a lot of new AGI and PNS Champs cuts gained. We were led by Yuzuki Ishizuka, who celebrated her 11th birthday by earning three new best times, including a ginormous 11.63-second drop in her 50 Fly to earn her first 11-12 B time! On the learning side, we did have our most DQ slips in more than a year, but that just provides us with more things to focus on in workout. Highlights include:

  • Isshin Yokoyama not only earned his first A time in the 50 Free where he just missed breaking the :30 barrier, but his flawless 100 Free was the 9th fastest 10&U Boy time in Wave history and earned him his first AA time!
  • Audra Whitbeck cruised to her first-ever BB time in the 50 Fly with a 13-second drop and just missed a second BB time in her 100 Fly where she dropped more than 15 seconds!
  • Ryder and Sawyer Hsu just joined the team at the beginning of the month and both brothers earned their first B cap in their first US swim meet!
  • Arjun Bhate has started running his workout lane and it showed with big drops in his 100 Back and 50 Free!
  • Ahana Bhattacharya has been pushing herself and her teammates in practice, which led to three best times, including a massive 40-second drop in her 100 Back!
  • Bani Bhuyan had two best times, highlighted by an almost 10-second drop in her 100 Free to break the 1:20 barrier for the first time!
  • Lucy Broyles blasted her way to two new best times, including a 13+ second drop in the 100 Back!
  • Deniz Cankaya earned three best times, dropping more than 20 seconds total, including a 9.48-second drop to win the 50 Fly!
  • Ellen Feng picked up three new best times, including an A time in her 50 Free!
  • Claire Gao swam the 3rd fastest 10&U 100 Free in Wave history, just missing the 1:00 barrier (1:00.47), to go along with new AA times in her 50 Back and 50 Breast!
  • Abby Gray blasted more than 11 seconds off her 100 Free time and earned two new B time!
  • Olivia Henaire cut off more than 5 seconds in her 50 Breast to earn her first short course A time!
  • Dami Jung smashed her best 100 Free time by nearly 13 seconds to top her three best times!
  • Arvin Kandiah has been working hard day in and day out in practice, and was rewarded with three big time drops, topped by a 14-second drop in his 100 Free!
  • Yihan Li recently moved up a lane and showed why with two time drops of more than 7 seconds in the 100 Free and 50 Back!
  • Olivia Liu has started leading her lane and proved her mettle with three best times and drops of 12 seconds in the 50 Fly and 9.6 seconds in her 50 Free!
  • Eleanor Lopez had a huge 50 Free, slashing her best time by more than 4 seconds to break the :40 for the first time!
  • Molly Mayfield went 3-for-3, including a blistering 100 Free where she dropped more than 7 seconds and almost broke the 1:10 barrier!
  • Lainey Meyer swam a monster 100 Free, shattering the 1:20 barrier all the way down to a 1:17!
  • Kumail Mukadam comes to practice ready to swim hard every day and it paid off with three best times, including a 4.5-second drop in the 50 Fly, his weakest stroke!
  • Prisha Parikh didn’t just get three best times, she did it in style, earning A times in each event, including a 14-second drop in the 100 Free (easily breaking the 1:10 barrier) and a 10-second drop in the 50 Breast!
  • Irene Qu had a phenomenal meet, averaging more than 10 seconds dropped in all three races, highlighted by an 18-second drop in her 100 Free!
  • Rachael Rose turned in our biggest drop: 43 seconds in the 200 IM! As if that wasn’t enough, she also sheared 19 seconds off in her 100 Free, shattering the 1:20 barrier for the first time!
  • Navya Sainani’s huge drops broke the :40 barrier in both the 50 Fly and 50 Back!
  • Sanvi Shrivastava has really improved her attendance this season and earned three best times as a result, including a 10.6-second drop in her 100 Breast!
  • Beata Sobol continued her assault on her personal record book with three more best times, including a 9-second drop in the 100 Fly! In the past year, it is a rare meet when Beata doesn’t get a best time in every event, reflecting how much effort she puts into every practice!
  • Max Stevenson earned a best time in the 100 Back and successfully swam his first-ever 100 Fly!
  • Vedah Tuladhar not only survived her first 200 IM, but earned a new B time along the way!
  • Andy Yang’s final meet as a 10&U was a smashing success, a result of giving his all every practice! His three best times was highlighted by a 13-second drop in his 100 Back!
  • Ally Yuan makes everyone in her lane swim harder with her great attitude, which helped her garner three big time drops, topped by a 10-second drop in the 100 Free to break the 1:20 barrier and earn her first BB short course time!
  • Kyra Yuan dropped huge amounts of time in every race, led by a 8.5-second drop in her 100 Back!
  • Grace Zhan’s hard work in practice resulted in a perfect 3-for-3 meet, including an 11-second drop in her 200 IM!

Senior Prep

We had a great start to the 2022-2023 swim season with the Black and Purple meet. Sr. Prep had 107 successful swims where 77 swims were best times, which is 72% of all of our races. We had another 12 swims that were within a 0.01 to 0.50 of our best time. The average time drop for all swims was 0.80 seconds per race! Considering everyone was mostly entered in 50s, that is a great improvement. This average includes anything we successfully swam and had swum before, so for example, this average includes swims were swimmers added time. We also had seven swims that where a swimmer successfully swam an event for the first time.

White Group

Great things were done by the 65 White groupers who swam in the meet. We swam 7850 yards in 112 events legally, or almost 4.5 miles! We cut 480 seconds off our best times and landed 46 first legal swims. A big haul for a short meet!

FIRST MEETERS: braved their first official swim meet ever, no sweat.

  • A Group: Andy Nguyen, Kennedy Carlos, Jayan Upadhaya, Anuraag Fadnavis, Benjamin Toole
  • B Group: Joseph Foster, Albert O, Timothy Rakovchuk, Shatadru Roy Choudhury, Victor Shirshov, Bryan, Wei

MOTIVATIONAL GRADS: first ever B or BB times at this meet!

  • Andy Nguyen first B in 100 Free and first BB in 100 Breast, which is a Nov AGI qualifying time!
  • Berit Dunn 100 Breast
  • Melissa Nguyen 100 Breast
  • Yan Wang: 50 Breast
  • Serena Zhang 100 Breast
  • Rachel Siu 100 Breast
  • Arjun Yadav 100 Free
  • Han Sun 100 Breast

LOSS LEADERS: total time dropped at the meet

  • Cut 20 seconds+: Lucas Deng (-22s), Andrew Ouyang (-23.6s in 100 Free)
  • Cut 30 seconds+: Serena Zhang (-35s)
  • Cut 40 seconds+: Jayden Hor (-47s), Elizabeth Luo (-41s)
  • Losingest Winners: Leo Steijn (-50.58s - 22 in 50 Breast & 28s in 100 Free)

FREE-FALLER: Olivia Wu - 12s off her 50 Breast from late July! She believes in glides now.

FAST FINISHERS: most swimmers peter out when they get tired. These guys aren’t most swimmers!

  • Joseph Foster only gained 2 seconds in the second 50 of his 100 Free, and 1 second in his 100 Back!
  • Ben Ovendale only gained 0.5 second in the second 50 of his 100 Back!

100 FLYER CLUB inductees:

  • Anika Lichtenberg, Arjun Yadav, Jonathan Liu, and Adam Kantor all landed legally! No flutter kicks, no underwater recoveries, not even a one hand touch!
  • Elzabeth Luo landed her second 100 Fly, shaving 38 seconds off her old time!

SKIN-OF-HER-TEETH: Serena Zhang missed her heat of the 100 Breast and came to us during the penultimate heat of it. We were just able to get her in - and glad we did! In a borrowed lane, with a borrowed cap and borrowed goggles, she sliced 19 seconds off to score her first B time ever! The adrenaline rush worked for her, but it’s maybe not a workable strategy for future events…

NEAR MISSES:

  • Della Govsheev dropped 7.4 seconds off her 50 Free (late July) to land just 0.8 second shy of a first B time!
  • Yan Wang dropped 4.5 seconds off her 50 Breast (also late July) to score a first B time! If she had dropped just 1.25 second more, it would be her first BB time (hop skipping over Bs entirely!)

HEARTBREAKER & STRANGEST DQ:

  • Mila Paulus scored her first B time in her 50 Breast… or she would have if she hadn’t earned the strangest DQ award: Breaststroke out of cycle. When she pushed off the wall, she pulled before kicking. But she’s doubling down to get it done at the Roctober Meet!
