Our first meet of 2023 was another roaring success for Wave Aquatics! Coach Dillon got to return to the very same pool he grew up in and we all got to experience some Fast & Furious swimming! Congratulations to all our swimmers for their fabulous efforts, especially in an early season meet where best times can be tough to come by. Special congrats to each swimmer who made a new cut for AGI, Regionals, and Sectionals!

White Group

White Group had a fantastic Winter Challenge meet this last weekend, adding some feathers to their cap: they landed 45 events legally for the first time, including 5 first 100 IMs. They earned 24 new B times, and 4 new BB times. Four swimmers earned a first B time ever, and 1 swimmer earned a first BB time ever (Serena Zhang!). They shed a total of 1568 seconds over 301 events, so congrats to all who swam this weekend!

MOTIVATIONAL GRADS:

  • BB Firsts
    • Serena Zhang: 100 Breast (-4.4 seconds) which earns her a ticket to the February Age Group Invitational
  • B Firsts
    • Jonathan Liu: 50 Free (-3.1)
    • Nico Palfreyman: 50 Back (-3.9)
    • Dan Sun: 50 Back (-2). Dan also dropped 14 seconds off his 50 Breast time from December!
    • Norah Jones: 100 Breast (-13.8)

LOSS LEADERS: Swimmers who dropped the most time across all events

  • Cut 40s+: Andrew Zhu (-49.7), Coco Kleinpeter (-49.5), Keshav Iyer (-49.3), Aanya Sharan (-43), Owen Jones (-42), Jared Wen (-49.4 off three-month-old times)
  • Cut 50s+: Nico Palfreyman (-59.5), Shatadru Roy Choudhury (-54.5), Norah Braun (51.8)
  • Cut 60s+: Andrew Ouyang (-64)
  • Cut 70s+: Aman Bhatt (-74.3), Anishi Singh (-72.8s off three-month-old times)
  • Losingest Winner: Jonathan Liu (-77.7 seconds)

100 IM-LEGAL: Be especially proud of legalizing an IMs-, there are 40+ ways to be an outlaw. It’s a mental test during a physical test, and they aced bothJoseph Foster, Albert O, Rachel SiuJared Wen and Reagan Edwards, who just came off of sick leave!

ONES TO WATCH: swimmers who narrowly missed big firsts - they are often the most driven

  • Berit Dunn dropped another 5.7s off her 100 Breast to pull up 0.59s short of a first BB time.
  • Rinat Maksyutov dropped 3.2s in his 50 Back to land just 0.18s shy of a first BB time.
  • Henry Cheng earned his 2nd BB time this meet, but he’s closer to an A
  • Ben Ovendale landed just 0.25s from a first B in both his 50 Back and 100 Free (-17.8s!)
  • Andrew Ouyang tore through his old times at this meet, dropping -64s off times that were barely three months old! And nearly every event landed within spitting distance of B! He was 1.5 seconds away in his 100 Free, 1 second in 100 Breast, 0.6 in 100 Back, 0.4 in 50 Back and 0.02 in his 50 Breast! That’s a haircut ….or an actual streamline off the wall 😊

Senior 1

Senior 1 went into this meet feeling pretty tired. With the combination of SSDL Survival Week and intense training in the pool, they were not rested at all. The goal was to go in and have a positive attitude and work on executing the race strategy and seeing if they could swim fast while tired. The group absolutely blew my expectations out of the water. They did a wonderful job with their race strategy and many of them saw some best times. It was super fun to see so much success from this group at the first meet back from our winter break. Swimming so well this early into the year has me very excited to see what this group will be able to accomplish throughout the remainder of the season. Can’t wait to see some more awesome swims from this group.

Highlights

  • Nik Brusilovksi turned in some very strong swims. He has been training hard and was right on his times from champs in his races. He had a very strong leadoff leg of his 200 Medley Relay, posting a new lifetime best in the 50 Back.
  • Rik Brusilovski showed up with his game face on ready to get down to business. He had some great swims that were right at his best times. His most exciting swim of the meet was his 100 Fly where he had a huge 3-second drop and broke 1:00 for the first time.
  • Daniel Cho has really been putting in the work at practice and it is really starting to show. He had a great meet, dropping time in three races. His 200 Breast was stellar, swimming with great splits, and ended up dropping 2 seconds from a time he posted just a month ago.
  • Hailey Crawford wasn’t feeling 100% for this meet but she still showed up with a positive attitude and put her best effort into all her swims. She had a great 50 Free, swimming the race with great tenacity and going close to her best time.
  • Aditi Kandiah was also battling not feeling very well over the weekend but didn’t let that stop her from making the most of her swims. She went into her races intending to swim the way we had planned and put her all into it. She was right on her best time or better in all her races. Her biggest drop of 1.5 seconds came in the 50 Back.
  • Aarohi Gandi swam hard in all her races. She has really worked on improving her training and, as a result, came into this meet feeling very tired. It was great for her as she still swam pretty much right at her best times and much faster than she was at this time a year ago. Her best races were the 200 Free and 200 IM; she really got after it and raced hard in those events and was right on her best time in both.
  • Henry Geitz was a man on a mission over the weekend. He turned in best times in every event showing that his intense training is really paying off. His most exciting race was the 400 IM where he dropped 6 seconds, marking the third time in a row he has dropped in the event.
  • Peter Hansen had himself an excellent meet, dropping time in four of his races. He has really stepped up both in the pool and dryland and it is already paying off. His best races were the 100 Fly where he had a monster 4-second drop and the 200 IM where he raced hard the entire time on his way to dropping a second.
  • Iris Huang started the meet off with a bang, absolutely crushing her relay swim. She then just kept the ball rolling, dropping an impressive 9 seconds in the 200 Free. She never really looked back from there, dropping in the 100 Free again after breaking 1:00 for the first time just a month ago and placing first in four races.
  • Rashmi Joshi has been looking very good in the water lately. She has worked on improving her strokes and strength in the pool. It is showing through in her racing as she dropped in four races over the weekend. She had an awesome 50 Free where she dropped a second.
  • Adrian Juco competed at his first meet since joining the group. He made it his mission to leave his mark and he did just that dropping time in every single event. He crushed the 200 Breast, going 4 seconds faster than his previous best.
  • Daniel Xia, another swimmer competing for the first time as a member of the group. Like his counterpart, he made the most out of this meet dropping in five events. He had a spectacular 100 Breast dropping 2 seconds and going under 1:10 for the first time. He followed that up with an awesome 100 Free where he accelerated into the finish and dropped a half second from his Champs time.
  • Kyle Li has been busy getting ready for the high school post season and used this meet to prepare himself for the upcoming meets. He turned in good swims all weekend, racing hard and going close to his best time in everything. He swam a super tough 100 Free, rallying from a poor start to finish right at his best time.
  • Ethan Na has continued to focus on his sprint speed while also improving his breaststroke. This training came through for him over the weekend as he posted time drops in the 50 Free, 100 Free, and 100 Breast. His best race though was the 200 Fly where he lost his goggles but didn’t panic and just swam his race, achieving a best time in the process.
  • Joseph Nguyen had a busy end to his semester but made the most out of his training and raced very well over the weekend, posting three new best times. His most exciting race was his 100 Free where he dropped half a second. He is ready to keep working hard and continuing to improve.
  • Neha Phatak has been working hard training for longer events. She had great success in both her 200s over the weekend. In the 200 IM, she swam a strong race and finished fast, dropping almost 2 seconds. She had an awesome 200 Free, splitting the race well and achieving her first Spring Showdown qualifying time.
  • Dylan Vu does a fantastic job of going out and just racing at meets. He raced hard all weekend and dropped time in three events. His most exciting swim was the 200 Free where he took out the first 100 blazing fast right at his 100 time then held on to win his heat and record a new best time in the event.
  • Rina Yuan took an opportunity to shift her focus to some of her off races at the meet. She had a blast swimming races she doesn’t swim as often. She had a wonderful 100 Fly staying strong throughout the race and dropping 3 seconds.

Senior Epic

Senior Epic came to the Winter Challenge Meet with a heavy training load and the main focus for our group was to practice some specific skills and race strategies we have been working on at practice. Despite the intense training, we had some really strong swims, many best times, and new cuts achieved during the weekend, including three new Sectionals cuts and a first time Sectionals qualifier. So far, our Sectionals crew has seven athletes qualified for this Spring and counting…

Enjoy some highlights from our group:

  • Boston Borg is the man who achieved his first-ever Sectionals cut and his first-ever AAA Time with a fantastic 500 Free where he dropped another 2 seconds! He also went best times in all six events with an impressive 6-seconds drop in the 200 Back.
  • Jaiden Sreenivasan had a fantastic meet, going 5 of 6 best times and adding two new Sectionals cuts to his menu of events (100 Back and 200 IM). His outstanding swim was the 200 IM where he dropped 4 seconds and got a AAA Time, breaking the 2:00 barrier for the first time (1.56.61).
  • Anouk Balog had a really strong first day at the meet where she dropped time in two events and swam right at her time in the third one. Her outstanding swim was the 200 Breast, dropping almost 4 seconds and showing great rhythm in her stroke.
  • Kyler Brumfield was happy with her freestyle, swimming really well in the sprint events and demonstrating good versatility in different distances. Her strongest race was the 100 Free where she showed a powerful stroke during the race.
  • Alex Werth went three best times and demonstrated that the work he has been putting in to improve other strokes has paid off. He went a best time in the 50 and 200 Back as well as the 100 Fly.
  • Alex Popov really felt all the hard training we have been doing this season but went home with a personal best in the 50 Back, dropping 9 seconds from his old time.
  • Jenna Kimborowicz swam off events at this meet and was satisfied to execute the race strategies she had planned for the weekend. She had strong swims in the 400 IM, 200 Breast and 50 Fly.
  • Lola Reynolds had a solid 100 Back showing strong and efficient underwater dolphin kicks. She also had a great 50 Breast going a best time by 0.36.
  • Noah Sattari swam only one day of the meet and blasted out a best time in the 50 Fly while still feeling a little sick the past week.
  • Tyler Kong had a solid meet with many strong swims and brought home a best time in the 100 Back, showing off his improvement in the stroke.
  • Fredrik Larsen was focused on executing strong and fast underwater dolphin kicks and that is what he did. He was happy to execute his race plan and will keep working on getting stronger in that skill.
  • Aadhav Saravanan had many strong swims during the whole weekend and was able to drop 1.62 seconds to get a best time in the 50 Fly.

Great job to all Epic swimmers and I am looking forward to more intense training this month!

Senior Prep

Sr. Prep had some amazing swims at the Winter Challenge Meet. Sr. Prep had 184 successful swims where 103 of them were best times, which is 56% of all our races. We had another 22 swims that were exactly at our best time or within 0.5 of our best time. The average time drop for all swims was 1.63 seconds per race! This average time drop includes anything we successfully swam and had swum before, so this average includes swims where swimmers added time. We also had seven swimmers who swam 12 new swims where they successfully swam an event for the first time. Nice Job Sr. Prep!
