Daffodil Classic Meet Recap

Wave's Sport Team and several members of the Select Team trekked down to Tacoma to swim the first day of the Daffodil Classic. A big shout out to all our parents for making the drive to support their kids, and an even bigger shout out to the parents who stepped up and volunteered to time!

Senior Prep

Sr. Prep had seven swimmers swim at the Daffodil Classic, and they did outstanding. We just had one day of racing with seven swimmers and had 17 successful races. Our average time drop per race was 4.85 seconds! An absolutely amazing drop that I have to call out is Arya Bhatt who dropped 46+ seconds in the 100 Fly to go a 1:18.1! Shout outs to Molly Mayfield and Kaylan Li for achieving new motivational time standards! Great job Sr. Prep!

Purple Group

Purple group had some solid wins as we trekked to Tacoma for the Daffodil Classic. Some highlights include:

  • Lola Cheng got a B time in her 50 Breast going a 42.56!
  • Dario Giuliani broke the 30 in his 50 Free going a 29.75!
  • Kirill Kadach dropped over 19 seconds in his 200 IM!
  • Anna Kosseff dropped over 19 seconds in her 100 IM!
  • Charlie Page dropped over 9 seconds in 100 IM!
  • Raina Tuladhar dropped over 24 seconds in 200 IM!

Overall, there were a lot of drops big and small across the board! The walls were reported by the athletes as being slippery but with that, we saw some great improvements of their swim techniques and not just times drops. Congratulations to all Purple group kids who made the trek and swam their hearts out!!

White Group

White group had a great Daffodil classic meet, riding some Lezak anticipation to some steep improvements. We got to ‘crown’ three swimmers for their first B time in the 50 Free alone! In the 100 IM, we had three swimmers land it legally for the first time. Of those who could drop time, most did…and they dropped big! Seven swimmers even dropped time in the double digits (>10s). So much to be proud of!

MOTIVATIONAL GRADS: first ever B times at this meet

  • Kennedy Carlos (50 Free) dropped 3.6s, landing halfway to a BB time with a fast start and seriously smooth speed
  • Mudit Singh (50 Free) dropped 1.7s in just one month, with a longer stroke and a stretch finish
  • Michael Zhao (50 Free) cut 11.6s for his first B time in his last meet before turning 11! He got his head in line and his breath-count down and turned his splash into forward speed.

LOSS LEADERS: total time dropped at the meet

  • Cut 15s+: Siena Stahlkopf (-19.9s), Rhea Dawani (-18.9s), Abby Ranson (-16.4s)
  • Cut 20s+: Shtatadru Roy Choudhury (-23.8s), Aman Bhatt (-21.2s)
  • Cut 25s+: Alyssa Yang (-25.25s), Navya Arora (-26.8s) including -19s off her 100 Back in one month
  • Losingest Winner: Rory Geitz (-33.4s) was on fire, dropping big in every event, off recent times. On his 100 IM, alone, he dropped 26s in two months. His dive looks like he’s flying even before he hits the water!

ACES: they swam all their events legally and faster than ever - nothing but net.

  • A: Anu Fadnavis, Shatadru Roy Chaudhury, Alyssa Yang, Mudit Singh
  • B: Siena Stahlkopf, Roohi Indurkar, Abby Ronson, Navya Arora, Rory Geitz

INDIVIDUAL MEDLEY FIRSTS: 40+ ways to DQ, and they landed it legally for the first time.

  • Navya Arora
  • Thomas Godbout
  • Roohi Indurkar

BREAKTHROUGH: Katie Yi de-flop-ed her breaststroke kick for BOTH her 100 IM and 50 Breast! It has been a long mind-over-muscle battle, but Katie won.

ONE TO WATCH: Andrew Ouyang has another almost-B time. He burned 9.6s off his 100 IM to land 0.8s from a first B. For those keeping score, he is less than 1.5s away from a first B time…in seven different events!

Black Group

As was mentioned in my group email, a big thank you to all the parents who got their kids to the meet on time on Saturday, as well as adjusting to not having a heat sheet ahead of time like we do for most WAVE hosted meets. This made my job much easier to do and allowed me to keep my focus mostly on what was going on in the pool. In addition, the athletes did a good job of helping me get them to their events.

Some successful first-time swims from:

  • Aaradhya Bharadwaj - 25 Back, 25 Breast, 25 Free
  • Quinn Braun - 25 Fly
  • Arifin Capiral - 25 Fly
  • Tony Chen - 25 Fly
  • Mira Erdim - 100 Back
  • Kaito Falk - 100 Back
  • Eric Feng - 100 Back
  • Jason Gao - 100 IM
  • Viyan Gupta - 25 Breast, 25 Fly
  • Vivian Hu - 25 Breast, 25 Fly
  • Rosemary Huang - 25 Back, 25 Breast, 25 Free
  • Aarush Kakkar - 100 Back
  • Ruzgar Koc - 25 Fly
  • Elvis Lu - 25 Breast, 25 Fly
  • Jackson Neurath - 100 Back, 25 Fly
  • Aashay Rane - 50 Breast
  • Lexie Watrous - 100 Back
  • Owen Wilson - 100 IM
  • Owen Yan - 25 Back, 25 Breast, 25 Free
  • Naomi Zhao - 25 Breast, 25 Fly
  • Maggie Zhou - 25 Breast

Super exciting part of the meet- the Daffodil Derby!

The 25 Free was the first event of the session. Everyone in Black age 8&U was entered into this event. They then took the fastest six swims from each gender and had them race again at the end of the session. We had two athletes racing in finals: Natalie Whitbeck and Eric Feng! They were both understandably a little nervous, but they did great and raced with really good effort. Congratulations you two!

My favorite event at this meet was…

The 50 Breast! We had a bunch of really nice swims from the kids that were both legal and I thought the kids raced really well here. Quinn Braun, Avni Garg, Blakely Hansen, Beatrix Pressman, Aashay Rane, Natalie Whitbeck and Owen Wilson all did terrific in this race and looked much improved with the stroke.
