IMX/IMR Meet Recap

IMX/IMR Meet Report

What a great way to start of the Spring/Summer Long Course season with the challenging IMX/IMR meet. Swimmers had to compete in all four strokes + at least one IM swim and all groups had several outstanding swims! IMX (IM Extreme) and IMR (IM Ready) are recognized US Swimming challenge meets. Many of these events are ones swimmers had not done in a long time, resulting in many swimmers dropping HUGE amounts of time, including some who dropped 1:00+!!! Scoring is based on the US Swimming Power Points system.

Age Group Select

This was an up-and-down meet for AGS. The upside: five new caps to pass out with Deniz Cankaya earning his first A time, Leo Steijn and Berit Dunn earning their first BB times, and Aman Bhatt and Andrew Ouyang earning their first B times and a whole host of best times, some of them huge. The downside: a record number of DQs for AGS (38 including at least 1 for every event). We will have to go back and review what happened.

  • Alex Arlouski had four best times ranging from 7.72 (100 Back) to 44.14 (500 Free) seconds dropped and missed a perfect meet by only 0.8! This is no surprise as few swimmers have worked as hard as Alex since the New Year!
  • Arjun Bhate swam a perfect 5-for-5 best times highlighted by a 9.4-second drop in the 500 Free and a 15.89 second drop in his 200 IM. Arjun has been as focused as a laser beam on his distance work and it really paid off in this meet!
  • Aman Bhatt dropped 10.44 seconds in the 100 Breast to earn his first B time and swam his first ever 100 Back and 200 Free!
  • Lucy Broyles had a fabulous swim in the 200 Free, dropping more than 5 seconds!
  • Deniz Cankaya not only earned his first-ever A time in the 100 Back but picked up new BB times in his 100 Breast and 200 Free with substantial improvements. What a reward for all his hard work in practice!
  • Henry Cheng started the meet off huge, dropping 31.68 seconds in his 100 Back, then followed up to win the 100 Breast, drop 21.93 seconds in his 200 Free, and successfully swim the 100 Fly and 200 IM for the first time!
  • Lucas Deng picked up three new best times, including his first-ever legal 100 Fly!
  • Berit Dunn not only earned her first-ever BB Time in the 100 Breast, she picked up new B times in the 100 Back and 200 Free with huge drops and legally swam her first-ever 100 Fly and 200 IM. If that wasn’t enough, she earned first place in all five events!
  • Mira Erdim started off her career in AGS really well with a monster 23.45-second drop in her 100 Breast and earned 2nd place in her first-ever 200 Free!
  • Ellen Feng garnered two more A times with incredible swims, dropping 9.12 seconds in her 200 Free and 8.32 seconds in her 200 IM!
  • Rihit Gandhi has figured out how to word hard day in and day out, and the payoff was big with three new best times including a 16.95-second drop in his 100 Fly, and swam his first-ever 500 Free with a very respectable 7:31.
  • Rory Geitz had a perfect weekend, with amazing drops of 16.02 seconds in the 100 Back and 15.21 seconds in the 100 Breast to go along with first-ever swims in the 100 Fly, 200 Free, and 200 IM! He even earned a 2nd place in the 100 Fly!
  • Abby Gray overcame injuries and illness to earn the Ironwoman Award with four best times!
  • Olivia Henaire had an excellent meet with three best times led by her smoking fast 500 Free, where she dropped 37.62 seconds to pick up 2nd place and had the fastest 500 of everyone in AGS! Not bad for a breaststroker!
  • Fiona Herman had a rough start on day 1, but came back strong on day 2, especially her 200 IM where she slashed off 33.15 seconds to earn a new BB time!
  • Elise Kabakci dropped 13 seconds in her 200 Free and swam the 100 Breast, 100 Fly, and 200 IM for the first time. She earned a BB time in the breast and IM and a B time in the fly! Her swims were no surprise to Coach Jay, however, because few swimmers put more effort into workout!
  • Arvin Kandiah had a phenomenal 200 Free, dropping 18:58 seconds to just break the 3:00 barrier to go along with 2nd place finishes in the 100 Breast and 200 IM!
  • Maria Kokhan survived a sore shoulder the drop an astonishing 27.59 seconds in her 100 Fly (a new BB time!) and 4.71 seconds in her 200 Free!
  • Lingyi Li swam all five races for the first time: 100 Back, 100 Fly, 100 Breast, 200 Free and 200 IM. Her great efforts in her first month with AGS earned her B times in the back and breast!

  • Olivia Liu had several exceptional swims and three best times, highlighted by an 8.26-second drop in her 200 Free!
  • Eleanor Lopez has worked very hard in practice for the past few months and the payoff was big. Not only did she go 5-for-5, but she dropped 21.59 seconds in her 100 Breast and earned a BB time in her first-ever legal 100 Fly!
  • Rinat Maksyutov survived his first month of AGS with very nice time drops in the 100 Back and 100 Breast and a 4th place finish in his first-ever 200 Free!
  • Max Malinovskyi is becoming more focused on training well in practice and it showed in the meet with big drops in his 100 Back and 200 Free to go with a 1st place finish in the 200 IM!
  • Andy Nguyen dropped more total time than anyone else in AGS, a result of his excellent workout habits! Not only did he pick up 4th place in his first-ever 100 Fly, but he dropped 5.08 seconds in his 100 Back, 8.25 seconds in his 100 Breast, 33.04 seconds in his 200 IM, and absolutely destroyed his best 500 Free by 1:21.07…yes, that’s an 81-second drop!!
  • Andrew Ouyang had a tough time on day 1, but soared back on day 2 to show what happens when you have a positive attitude! He had two best times on day 2, including a 21.67-second drop in his 200 Free and swam his first legal 200 IM!

  • Dan Sun had two monster drops—4.62 seconds in the 100 Back and 18.52 seconds in the 100 Breast, then picked up 3rd place in all three events that he swam legally for the first time: 100 Fly, 200 Free, and 200 IM!
  • Han Sun had an excellent 100 Back, dropping almost 4 seconds, and swam three events beautifully for the first time: 100 Fly, 200 IM, and 500 Free!

All three of those swims earned her new BB times. This is what happens when you get tired of going last in your lane and turn around your workout habits!

  • Audra Whitbeck earned a best time every time she dove in, led by her 500 Free where she broke 8:00 for the first time and swam a near-perfect 100 Fly to drop 3.63 seconds!

Purple Group

Purple Group had a fantastic weekend with tons of time drops and successful swims! It was great to see our swimmers get to improve in events that they had not swum in a long time. The swimmers did a great job of checking in and out with me as well as Coach Ryan while Coach Aili is away. Some of the top highlights from this weekend include:

  • Piper Wiegand had one of the biggest drops for the whole Wave team dropping 1 minute and 53 seconds in the 200 Free
  • Tvesa Bansal dropped 11 seconds in the 100 IM
  • Adam Kantor dropped 30 seconds in the 200 Free
  • Emily Dong dropped 28 seconds in the 200 Free
  • William Scott dropped 30 seconds in the 100 IM
  • Landon Yuan dropped 12 seconds in 50 Fly
  • Michael Zhou dropped 16 seconds in the 50 Breast and 16 seconds in the 100 IM
  • Zachary Zeng dropped 47 seconds in the 200 Free
  • Ela Sakin dropped 11 seconds in the 100 Back and 16 seconds in the 200 Free

  • Karina Maksyutov dropped 28 seconds in the 200 Free

There were many other great swims that I saw beside the ones listed above that were equally impressive. While I was watching the pool, Coach Aili was watching on meet mobile, and both of us would like to tell our swimmers how enormously proud we are of their performance last weekend!!

White Group

FIRST MEET MASTER: Amarissa Chandra braved her first official swim meet ever, no panics or missed events!

MOTIVATIONAL GRADS: first ever B or BB times at this meet!

First BB:

  • Ilia Maksimchuk (50 Back)
  • Melissa Nguyen (50 Breast)

First B:

  • Max Sun (100 Free, 100 IM, 50 Fly, 50 Back, 50 Breast)! A one-meet B-Pentathlete!
  • Ben Ovendale (100 Free)
  • Adele Bokach (100 Free)
  • Anu Fadnavis (100 Free)
  • Clara Stevenson (100 IM, 50 Back)
  • Rhea Dawani (50 Fly…and landed just 0.15 away in her 50 Breast!)
  • Owen Wilson (50 Back)
  • Ethan Pan (50 Back)
  • Joseph Foster (50 Back)
  • Esha Bhatia (50 Back)
  • Albert O (50 Breast)

LOSS LEADERS: total time dropped at the meet

  • Cut 40s+: Anu Bathe (-43 seconds), Rhea Dawani (-41), Norah Braun (-42)
  • Cut 45s+: Perrie Lam (-49), Max Sun (-48.5), Melissa Nguyen (-47.6)
  • Cut 50s+: Lucas Xu (-61.5), Tim Rakovchuck (-55), Clara Stevenson (-55), Esha Bhatia (-50)
  • Losingest Winner: Aria Beazer (-96)

MIND-OVER-MEETer: Melissa Nguyen hadn’t done the 50 Breast in two years, so she was seeded into a late heat, just before the no-timers. But she was a wolf in sheep’s clothing, and ran away with it, dropping 28 seconds and squeaking in just 0.17 under the BB time cut! Then, she rescued some goggles from the bottom of the pool and saved the race for another kid. We are going to have to get her a cape, somewhere!

TIME FREE-FALLer: Rhea Dawani - 11.5 seconds off her 50 Breast from March! She believes in glides now.

BRAVEST DQs: Mudit Singh, Ella Gao and Olivia Horng braved backstroke flip turns that broke a rule. It’s brave, because backstroke flip turns are optional, more likely to DQ, and faster (done well). Olivia would have earned her first B time, but for a pause before flipping!

STRANGEST DQs:

  • Shatadru Roy Chaudhury, in his 100 IM broke a rule that he didn’t know existed … and a strange one: in his breaststroke, he touched the wall with his hands together. Don’t ask me why this is a rule, but it’s still progress when he gets a bigger, better/ stranger DQ!
  • Jared Wen, in his 50 Breast, decided to try a new technique that he had never done before. Unfortunately, it wasn’t quite legal because his head didn’t break the surface…

WINNING IN THEIR SLEEP: Melissa Nguyen, and Siena discovered the value of a solid night’s sleep! Melissa’s second day bounce back landed her 50 Breast under the BB line for the first time, and checkout Siena’s 50 Fly below.

ONES TO WATCH: these swimmers narrowly missed big motivational firsts this meet - they are often the most driven in the group!

  • Siena Stahlkopf dropped 14.4 seconds in her 50 Fly to land a scant 0.8 from a first B time! She learned the value of sleeping well the night before!
  • Emma Lu dropped 15.7 seconds on her 100 Free, landing only 1.6 from a first B. She landed only barely further in the 50 Back

Senior Epic

The Senior Epic group had a challenging week with intense practices every day and finished the week with strong swims at the IMX Meet! The IMX/IMR Meet is a great opportunity for athletes to swim races they might not swim very often, train new strategies, and update those times. Our group was focused on swimming very hard in all the events and they did well at that. We also had swimmers in our group without times in some events and they had the chance to swim those events for the first time. This weekend was an important preparation for our upcoming long course meet. See below some highlights from our group:

  • Anouk Balog had a solid weekend and her outstanding swim was the 200 Fly
  • Kyler Brumfield focused on her strategy and did as she planned in the 500 Free
  • Nik Brusilovski had two giant drops in both 200 Fly (-14.31) and 400 IM (-12.23) with an exceptional free leg at the end of the race
  • Rik Brusilovski updated his times in two events, 200 Back and 200 Fly, dropping more than 3 seconds in both
  • Raymond Chen swam only one day and went best times in all three events, including a huge 14-second drop in the 500 Free.
  • Hailey Crawford was happily surprised by her 200 Fly where she dropped almost 8 seconds. She also swam a very strong 400 IM dropping 11 seconds and achieving another A Time
  • Henry Geitz swam the 200 Fly for the first time and had a great race. He also crushed his 200 Breast and dropped 15 seconds
  • Jenna Kimborowicz has been improving her breaststroke at practice and it showed with a strong 200 Breast and 400 IM
  • Fredrik Larsen’s best event of the weekend was a well-paced 500 Free
  • Owen Ledrick dropped almost 3 seconds to go a best time in the 200 Fly
  • Ethan Na went 4-of-5 best times with massive drops in the 500 Free (-16.01), 400 IM (-16.02), and 200 Back (-7.54)
  • Alex Popov had a rough weekend but managed to swim a strong 500 Free, racing his teammates until the last lap of the race
  • Aadhav Saravanan has been focusing more on his Distance Per Stroke and was satisfied to apply the strategy in the 500 Free
  • Noah Sattari has been working on his breast technique and was excited with a 3.5 second drop in the 200 Breast
  • Jaiden Sreenivasan felt very comfortable this weekend since this is a normal meet lineup for him. His strongest swim was the 200 Back where he was able to do solid underwater dolphin kicks
  • Alexander Werth dropped almost 2 seconds in the 200 Fly and was very happy with his race.
  • Rina Yuan did a great job managing the expectation and swimming the 200 Fly for the first time!

Congrats and be ready to continue the grind!

Senior 1

We had 26 swimmers compete at the IMX/IMR Meet last weekend. This group has been training incredibly hard to start off our long course season, pushing themselves every day and working hard to improve. This meet was a great test for them as we did not rest at all, and most were swimming races they don’t typically compete in. The group did an amazing job rising to the challenge and swimming incredibly well all weekend. We had tons of best times and some awesome swims. It was a treat to watch them all compete so intensely and discover they could swim fast even when tired. I am very excited to see what they can do at the May Flowers meet.

  • Oleg Arlouski has really been pushing his training in the pool taking on harder and harder intervals. He has done an excellent job at pushing out of his comfort zone during butterfly training. That training certainly paid off as he had an awesome 200 Fly dropping 3.5 seconds and swimming a clean, well-split race.
  • Tanay Boda is a newcomer to the group and is adjusting well to the increased intensity of training. He has been working hard each day. He had a fantastic 400 IM, dropping 5 seconds and racing hard all the way to the finish.
  • Daniel Cho took this meet as an opportunity to swim some races he typically wouldn’t enter. As a result, he walked away with some massive time drops. His biggest drop was his 500 Free where he lowered his time by 48 seconds, breaking the 6:00 mark for the first time.
  • Aarohi Gandhi had an awesome meet turning in huge drops in three races. She had monster 6-second drops in both the 200 Fly and 500 Free, then followed those up with an even bigger 10-second drop in the 200 Breast. She is eager to continue training hard and rock her next outing.
  • Ananiah Gashaw has been pushing herself hard every day since joining the group. She started the meet off with a smash, dropping 4 seconds in the 200 IM. She is eager to continue seeing improvement as she competes.
  • Nethaniah Gashaw turned in strong performances in all her races, going right at her best or dropping in each event. She swam a very strong 200 Fly, holding form throughout the whole race and finishing hard on her way to dropping 2 seconds. Her best race came in the 200 Back where she blazed her way to an 11-second drop.
  • Peter Hansen fancies himself a sprinter but in preparation for this meet he made it a mission to work on his endurance for the longer races. His training paid off in a huge way as he saw huge drops in all his events. His biggest drop of 17 seconds in the 200 Back was awesome to watch as he absolutely crushed it.
  • Penelope Hepkin has done an excellent job of pushing herself at practice and taking on new challenges. This culminated in her taking on the 200 Fly for the first time and swimming a super strong race to break 3:00 on her first try. She then followed up with a stellar 500 Free dropping 20 seconds and getting closer to breaking the 6:00 mark.
  • Iris Huang is another who prefers to swim the shorter sprint events; however, she was determined to perform well in her off races. She rose to the challenge and performed spectacularly. She took on the 200 Fly for the first time and posted a solid time. Her 59-second drop in the 500 Free was her biggest of the weekend.
  • Rashmi Joshi has really stepped up her stroke training recently. Her hard work paid off incredibly well as she dropped time in all four races. She started the meet off with a huge 21-second drop in the 200 Fly and finished with an even bigger 27-second drop in the 400 IM.
  • Adrian Juco took full advantage of the opportunity to update his times in some races he doesn’t swim very often. He was another who swam the 200 Fly for the first time and looked strong through the entire race. He turned in a huge 38-second drop in the 500 Free for his biggest of the weekend.
  • Aditi Kandiah had a very successful weekend of racing dropping time in three events. She turned in a stellar performance in the 500 Free, dropping 17 seconds. She then went on to absolutely crush the 400 IM, dropping 34 seconds.
  • Cora Ledrick has been pushing herself at practices since joining the group. Her high intensity training resulted in some very solid swims over the weekend. She had a super strong 200 Fly to kick things off then continued to race well finishing the meet with a new best time in the 400 IM.
  • Kyle Li joined the list of swimmers who competed in the 200 Fly for the first time. He turned in a great race, splitting well and finishing strong. He followed up with strong swims in the 500 Free and 400 IM going just off his best times in both events.
  • Anton Mazepa has really made the most out of moving up into the group and has been crushing his training. That really showed at the meet as he turned in awesome performances in all his races. He had a very exciting 400 IM where he raced with a teammate all the way to the finish on his way to a 15-second improvement.
  • Joseph Nguyen was only able to swim one day of the meet but he made the most out of his day. He turned in outstanding performances in both the 200 Back and 200 Breast dropping 12 and 4 seconds respectively.
  • Sonny Nguyen was only able to swim on Saturday. He turned in some very strong swims starting off going right at his best time in the 200 Fly. He followed that up by racing hard all the way through the 200 IM on his way to a new best time. He finished with a strong 500 Free to close out a grueling day of racing.
  • Neha Phatak put her game face on from the start and raced super well all weekend. She started off smashing the 200 Fly and dropping 25 seconds. The most exciting race was her 400 IM where she led her heat the whole race in a total runaway to finish well ahead of the competition.
  • Ani Purkayastha went out and raced well in all her events. She started off with a solid drop in the 200 Fly and followed up by putting her all into the rest of her races going right at or under her best times. Her biggest drop of 4 seconds was in the 200 Breast.
  • Rahul Purkayastha really made the most of the meet, turning in three new best times. He crushed the 200 Fly, dropping 7 seconds. He then turned around and dropped 12 seconds in the 500 Free before wrapping up a stellar meet with a 12-second drop in the 400 IM.
  • Tandisse Rahimi showed how tough she could be racing well in all her events. She rose to the challenge of swimming all 200s and the 500 by taking on each race with tenacity. Her biggest drop of the weekend was a monster 17 seconds in the 500 Free.
  • Neil Rawal has been working hard after an illness kept him out of the pool an extra week at the start of the season. He made the most out of his races working to execute race strategy and finish hard. He was right at his best time in the 200 Breast and 500 Free while swimming the 400 IM for the first time and achieving a B time in his first outing.
  • Boris Shakhov was eager to get back to competing and had a very strong meet going right at his best time in the 200 and 400 IM. His best race was his 200 Back where he dropped 7 seconds by executing the race strategy very well and finishing hard. He is ready to continue to see his racing improve as the season goes on.
  • Radha Shriram joins the list of swimmers going best times in all four of their races. She had some very strong swims and the results speak for themselves. She had a huge 23-second drop in the 200 Breast and an even bigger 28-second drop in the 500 Free.
  • Dylan Vu was on fire all weekend turning in best time after best time. He gutted out a super solid 500 Free dropping 5 seconds. His most exciting race was his 400 IM where he raced hard from start to finish on his way to an 18-second drop and first place finish in the event.
  • Daniel Xia was our final member to go a best time in every race. This meet was a great opportunity for him to shift away from his usual events and update some of his other times. He had huge drops of 10 plus seconds in all his races, absolutely smashing his old times. His 400 IM to finish the meet was especially exciting as he crushed his heat and sprinted his way to the finish to drop 47 seconds.

Senior Prep

Senior Prep did very well at the IMX Meet with 157 successful swims where 117 were best times, which is 75% of all our races. We had another 6 swims that were exactly at our best time or within 0.5 second of our best time. The average time drop for all swims was 5.02 seconds! This average time drop includes anything we successfully swam and had swum before, including races where swimmers added time. Excellent meet results. We also had 22 new swims where a swimmer completed a race legally for the first time. I especially wanted to give a shout out to all the swimmers who swam the 200 Fly legally for the first time: Gahl Ami-ad, Daniel Chen, Olivia DeAmicis, Deming Gates, Lauren Hizzey, and Kirill Kadach. Congratulations! 200 Fly is a challenging event, and it is quite an accomplishment.

We had a number of really strong swims from the Black Groups over the weekend, but the 100 Free really stood out as an event. Many of the kids did a terrific job with their breathing and their turns, which was exciting to see happen. Elaina Jiang, Beatrix Pressman, Yushi Chong, Alessandra Watrous, Kenshin Yokoyama, Alex Wang, Haim Jung, Raihan Echevarria, Eric Feng and Kaito Falk were all at 1:40 or faster in that race. Awesome racing!!!

The following athletes were entered in all five races and successfully (no disqualifications) completed them all:

  • Yushi Chong
  • Kaito Falk
  • Eric Feng
  • Vivian Hu
  • Elaina Jiang
  • Beatrix Pressman
  • Aashay Rane
  • Alexander Ritscher Osorio
  • Alex Wang
  • Kenshin Yokoyama

Special Awesome Teammate Award to Eric Feng for recognizing that one of his teammates who had stepped up for their race needed a pair of goggles. Without anyone asking, he grabbed his goggles and handed them to his teammate to use.

Congrats to ALL our Black Group athletes who raced over the weekend!!!
