Wave Rules the Pool at IST Open
Wave had yet another amazing meet featuring several new champs cuts, loads of best times and new US Swimming motivational times, and lots of first-time legal swims as we dominated Snohomish Pool and the Issaquah June Open!
A big shout out to Jaiden Sreenivasan, who broke the team 15-16 Boys 200 Back record, swimming a 1:53.18! In addition, Deniz Cankaya swam the second fastest 10&U Boys 200 Back in Wave history! Here are the meet highlights:
Senior Epic
Senior Epic was represented by six swimmers at the IST June Open. Again, we had amazing swims with lots of best times and great swims. Like past weekend, we had another swimmer in the group breaking a Team Record this weekend!! Jaiden broke the 15-16 Boys Team Record in the 200 Backstroke with an expressive 1:53.18 and a new AAA Time. Enjoy some highlights from our group:
- Hailey Crawford had a fantastic weekend and went 4 of 6 best times. Her outstanding swim was the 200 Free where she dropped a full second and earned an AA Time.
- Anouk Balog came strong and crushed her 50 Fly time with an excellent 1.24-second drop.
- Jaiden Sreenivasan has been improving his Backstroke and dropped 5.24 seconds in the 200 Backstroke in breaking the team record! He also went four personal best times and earned another two AAA Times.
- Alexandru Popov got sick a week before the meet and was still in recovery mode during the weekend. He swam all his six events and did the best he could to race hard and get back on track.
- Andy Wang was feeling strong and was gladly surprised with his 100 Butterfly where he dropped 1.31 seconds. The new time was enough to qualify for our Champs Meet in Oregon in July.
- Raymond Chen had a consistent meet and raced a strong 50 Free going right at their time.
- Roman Rybin is our guest swimmer and a former professional athlete. He will be swimming for Wave this summer! Roman swam four events and was very inspiring to watch. He performed phenomenal underwater dolphin kicks in both freestyle and butterfly events, which are his specialties.

Senior 1
The Senior 1 Group had nine swimmers compete at the IST Open. Everyone showed up ready to swim fast and execute their race strategies to the best of their ability. It was fun to see so many time drops. We only scaled back for two days in preparation for the meet, so it was awesome to see the swimmers perform so well on such little rest. I am excited to see what everyone can do at our upcoming meets and can’t wait to see them absolutely crush it when they are rested.
- Tanay Boda had some very solid swims at the meet and was right on his best times in his races. He has been pushing himself and making great progress at practice and is excited to see all his hard work transition to his races. His best swim was his 100 Free where he hit right at his best time.
- Aarohi Gandhi put forth solid swims in all her races. She had a strong 100 Breast showing that her technique is improving and was right at her best time. She also looked super strong and smooth on her way to matching her best time in the 50 Fly.
- Peter Hansen was a man on a mission to lower his best times and that is exactly what he did achieving six new personal bests over the course of the weekend. He had an awesome 100 Free splitting well and finishing strong, dropping 2 seconds. His biggest drop of 6 seconds was in the 100 Back.
- Kyle Li put his best foot forward in all his races going right at his best time in both the 50 Back and 50 Fly. He has been working on improving his strokes and showed very good improvement in both races.
- Joseph Nguyen swam his way to seven new personal bests. He has really improved in his training and his racing shows that. His most exciting event was the 100 Fly, where he put up an awesome swim staying relaxed and loose the whole way and breaking the 1:00 barrier for the first time.
- Sonny Nguyen swam all his races in pretty quick succession and did a wonderful job stepping up and putting everything he had into each race. He was right on his best time in all his events with a strong performance in the 200 IM that landed him a 3rd place finish.
- Neha Phatak has really improved her aerobic freestyle training since we started back up. She has been itching to get into a distance event and finally got her opportunity to race the 500. She swam an awesome race splitting well the whole way and cruising her way to a 2-second drop.
- Tandisse Rahimi continues to show improvement each time she comes out to race. She finished the weekend with six best times. She had a huge swim in the 100 Back on her way to a 5-second drop in the event.
- Neil Rawal had some absolute slam dunk swims where he dropped huge chunks of time. He looked very good, dropping 9 seconds in the 100 IM. While large, that would prove to be only the second biggest as he would outdo himself lowering his 100 Back time by 15 seconds.
White Group
This meet was a giant feather in our cap. We had a lot of big ‘firsts’ and no nervy no-shows, VERY few DQs, and a pile of new times, new B-times, BB times and four swimmers with first B times. We cashed in on all the fly work, earning our biggest, shiniest time drops to date. Accolades to all who attended, with a few extras for some outstanding performances:
MOONSHOT: Ilia Maksimchuck dropped 21s off his 100 Fly to score a BB time and the 2nd fastest Boys 10&U 100 Fly…on his last day being a 10&U. That’s how a swimmer does a ‘mic drop’! What will he do with his second decade??
MOTIVATIONAL GRADUATES: first-ever B times at this meet
- Keira Spitze (50 Breast, 100 Breast, 100 IM) - Three shiny B time firsts, with three more ‘close calls’ in her 50 Back, 200 IM and 100 Fly
- Siena Stahlkopf (200 IM, 50 Breast, 100 Breast) her first ever 200 IM, she cut 12 seconds off her time trial to earn her first ever B time! To top it off, all her swims were within 1 second of Bs!
- Olivia Horng (100 Breast, 200 Free)
- Kareli Dotson (50 Fly) - aced her first swim meet ever!
MOST NEW Bs:
- Max Sun earned new motive times everywhere he could, in his longer and harder events: 200 IM, 100 Fly, 100 Breast and 100 Back. He gets his head down now, so he may wear a new cap color soon. If he keeps his head down in his 100 Fly, he could shoot the moon!
- Jonathan Liu wasn’t far behind Max with three new Bs,(100 Back, 100 Fly, 200 IM) and large time drops in every event. He’s unflappable, smooth, and powerful. Hopefully, he’ll make his first PNS Champs cut at the Seattle Open!
LOSS LEADERS: total time dropped at the meet
- Cut 40s+: Aarush Kakkar (-48.5 seconds), Anika Arvan (-51)
- Cut 60s+: Arnold Tanto (-78), Anu Bathe (-66), Siena Stahlkopf (-60)
- Cut 80s+: Jonathan Liu (-89.5), Zoey Harmetz (-84.35 seconds in just three shorter events!)
- Losingest Winner: Amelia Ye dropped -96 spread across all her events!
ON FIRE
- Zoey Harmetz only swam on Saturday, but her times weren’t just dropping, they were freefalling. She earned the steepest improvements at the meet, cutting 7 seconds off her 50 Back and 20 seconds in her 50 Fly in just two months. Then she dropped 57s seconds in her 100 Breast! Something has ‘clicked’ for her recently.
- Owen Wilson tried getting his head down and he took off, cutting 5-7 seconds off his IMR Meet times. He earned a second B in his 50 Fly (0.16 to spare), and missed the B cut by only 0.06 in his 50 Breast and 0.01 in his 100 Free!
EPIC EVENT CLUB-ers: extra ‘kudos’ to these swimmers who tackled bigger events, legally
- 100 Fly and 200 IM: Ilia Maksimchuk, Jonathan Liu, Max Sun, Anu Bathe, Anu Fadnavis, Albert O, Keira Spitze, and Esha Bhatia!
- 200 IM: Owen Jones, Anika Lichtenberg, Siena Stahlkopf
- 100 Fly: Alyssa Yang
- 200 Free: Olivia Horng, Owen Wilson, Finley Wiegand, Arnold Tanto, Bryan Wei, Anika Arvan, Norah Braun

Age Group Select
AGS had a phenomenal meet with loads of brand new swims, big time drops, and several new cuts for the Seattle Open and PNS Champs. Two of those first-time swims were historical: Deniz Cankaya posted the second fastest ever 10&U Boys 200 Back while Olivia Liu swam the fifth fastest ever 10&U Girls 200 Breast! A big shout out to Isshin Yokoyama, who had an outstanding first-ever 400 IM and to all our first-time 500 Free swimmers: Henry Cheng, Lucas Deng, Elise Kabakci, Elizabeth Luo, Andrew Ouyang, and Serena Zhang.
- Arjun Bhate loves big distance sets and races, and he excelled in this meet with huge time drops in his 200 Breast, 200 Free, and 500 Free as well as swimming the 200 Back. However, that doesn’t mean he can’t sprint, as he showed with two large time drops in his 50 Back and 50 Breast!
- Aman Bhatt is learning how to work hard on a consistent basis and wow did that pay off! Six best times of 5+ seconds, including -21.32 in his 100 Free, -15.06 in his 100 IM, and -17.71 in his 50 Fly while earning new B times in his other three races! Keep up the hard work, Aman!
- Deniz Cankaya, in addition to his phenomenal 200 Back, dropped time in all his races, highlighted by an astonishing 43.87-second drop in his 500 Free! Small wonder, as he recently earned his way into the fastest workout lane.
- Henry Cheng swam three new races, all of them challenging: 200 Back, 200 Breast, and 500 Free. His other three races were all best times, highlighted by a 3.8-second drop in the 50 Free. His success didn’t surprise me, however, as he has excellent attendance and always practices with 100% effort!
- Lucas Deng has really turned the corner in the last month when it comes to consistent hard work in practice and boy did it show up in the meet! Lucas picked up five new motivational times, with the biggest two being a 14.98-second drop in the 100 Back and a 9.55-second drop in the 100 IM. Great swimming, Lucas!
- Mira Erdim has made the jump from Black Group straight to AGS with great success. She had best times in all six races, three of them drops of 12+ seconds. Of special notice was her 100 Free, where she shattered the 2:00 barrier, dropping 43.39 seconds!

Her biggest drops were -14.02 seconds in the 200 Back and a whopping 40.65 seconds in the 500 Free where just missed breaking the 7:00 barrier. Well done, Ellen!
- Rihit Gandhi had three best times and swam an excellent first-ever 200 Breast. His best swim of the weekend was a jaw-dropping 200 Free where he blasted more than 34 seconds off his best time! No surprise, however, because Rihit has really applied himself in practice!
- Rory Geitz earned five new best times at the meet, all with big time drops. His best swims were an 8.92-second drop in the 50 Breast and a 16.56-second drop in the 100 Free.
- Olivia Henaire has been trying to get into the 200 Breast ever since she turned 11, and wow did she impress everyone as she nearly broke 3:00 on her first try and earning a BB time. She also picked up BB times in her 100 IM and her 200 Free, where she dropped 12.5 seconds!
- Fiona Herman pushes herself to the limit in every practice, and that paid off big with four best times. Her biggest surprise came in the 100 Breast, which she thinks is her weakest stroke, yet she dropped 29 seconds and learned that she’s actually a really good breaststroker!
- Elise Kabakci earned a new US Motivational Time in every swim, picking up five new BB (including her first-ever 500 Free) and one new B time. She dropped 7.5 seconds in her 100 Free, 15 seconds in her 100 IM, and just missed an A time in her 50 Free with a 4.6 second improvement. This woman is going places!

- Rinat Maksyutov has proved himself to be one of the hardest workers of those new to AGS, and it showed as he garnered five best times, three of the new B times. His biggest drops were 5.47 seconds in the 100 Free and 6.29 seconds in the 100 IM.
- Andy Nguyen swam his first-ever 200 Back and dropped huge chunks of time in all four 50s, including his first 11-yr-old BB time in the 50 Breast where he dropped 8+ seconds and shattered the :40 barrier.
- Andrew Ouyang was another perfect 6-for-6 swimmer, including his first-ever 500 Free. In his other races, he not only dropped time every time but earned a new B time in each!
- Dan Sun had a fantastic meet with five best times, including dropping 8.5 seconds in his 50 Breast. That wasn’t his best swim, however, as he dropped 23.5 seconds in his 50 Fly and 29 seconds in his 100 IM! Awesome meet, Dan!
- Han Sun matched his brother with five best times, including his first-ever 200 Back and 200 Breast. His biggest drop came in the 100 Free, where he slashed 5.3 seconds off his best time and just missed breaking the 1:20.
- Alison Wang, in her last Wave meet before moving to San Francisco, turned in her best meet of the entire year, with four best times and just narrowly missing a new A time in the 100 Back. Great meet, Alison! We already miss you!!
- Isshin Yokoyama had the toughest meet of anyone in our group. Not only did he race the 400 IM for the first time (as well as scoring 6th place), but it was also his first 200 Back and 200 Breast! He also picked up a new best time—and his first-ever 11-yr-old BB time—in the 50 Back!
- Serena Zhang was another who swam her first-ever 200 Back, 200 Breast, and 500 Free. In the meantime, she also had three big time drops in her 50s, including a more than 7-second drop in her 50 Free!
Senior Prep
Sr. Prep did very well at the IST Meet. We had 92 successful swims where 80 were best times, which is 87% of all our races. We had another four swims that within 0.5 of our best time. The average time drop for all swims was 4.69 seconds per race! This average time drop includes anything we successfully swam and had swum before, so for example, this average includes swims were swimmers added time. We also had 16 new swims where a swimmer completed a race legally for the first time. I especially want to give a shout out to the six swimmers that swam the 400 IM for the first time: Claire Gao, Dami Jung, Kirill Kadach, Kaylan Li, Vien Pogue, and Beata Sobol. Congratulations! The 400 IM is a challenging event, and it Is quite an accomplishment.
- Arya Bhatt has been working very hard at practice and has great attendance. He had an amazing meet with five best times, including a 47-second drop in the 500 Free, a 9-second drop in the 100 Back, and a 5-second drop in the 200 IM. Impressive results Arya!
- Ahana Bhattacharya had five best times and swam two new races (200 Back and 200 Breast). She had a monster 20-second drop in the 200 free and swam it with perfect strategy just like we practice. She also had a huge 4-second drop in the 100 IM. Great Meet Ahana!
- Daniel Chen is another swimmer with impressive attendance and an ability to really push himself to his limit. He dropped in five of his races with a huge 10-second drop in his 100 Fly and an almost 3-second improvement in his 50 Fly.
- Madeleine Cheng had a good meet considering how much she is impacted by her allergies and breathing. She dropped in the 100 Breast and was less than 1 second off her best 50 Free time. She swam her races well for her other four events, and I know she will do awesome when she can get back to getting full practices on a regular basis.
- Evan Deng also does a fantastic job with his attendance and it really showed at the meet by his dropping time in every event he swam. Three of the races—200 Back, 200 Breast, and 200 Free—were new races for him, and he did a great job of racing those the right way with the strategies we talked about. Nice job Evan!
- Claire Gao did quite well with some big improvements in shorter events she had competed in recently in addition to completing the 400 IM for the first time. She had five best times, including a huge improvement in her 200 Back with a 14+ second drop and picking up her first :25 in the 50 Free. Great Job Claire!
- Nora Herman really does a good job of pushing herself in practice and wanting to try sets on harder sendoffs. She had a big improvement in her 200 Back with an 18-second drop, and got best times in four of her events. Keep up the hard work Nora!
- Yuzuki Ishizuka has one of the best flutter kicks in the group, and it especially showed up in her races. She swam three events and improved impressively in each: a 9-second improvement in her 100 Breast, a 3-second drop in her 50 Free, and almost a 2-second drop in her 100 Free. Keep kicking the way you do!
- Dami Jung does a really good job at practice in terms of her focus and ability to push herself. She dropped in every event she swam and did the 400 IM for the first time. She dropped 12 seconds in the 500 Free, almost 11 in the 100 IM, 5 in the 100 Free, and another 4 in the 50 Fly! She also had a 1.1 second drop in the 50 Free to get very close to breaking 30 seconds for the first time. Amazing meet, Dami!
- Kirill Kadach is still new to the sport and a bit raw with his skills, but he makes up for it with an amazing ability to push himself as well as astonishing endurance. He amazes me with his effort and ability to stay fast when tired. He improved in every event, and he swam the 100 Fly and 400 IM for the first time. Highlights of his meet were an 8-second improvement in his 200 IM, and a 5.5-second drop in his 100 Breast. Outstanding effort K!
- Kaylan Li was gone for a week and a half right before the meet, but still dropped in every event she swam. Highlights were an 8-second drop in her 200 Free, a 5.5-second drop in her 100 Free, and almost a 2-second improvement in her 50 Free. Wow! I would love to see you at practice more!
- Roshni Padmanabhan has improved so much in such a short amount of time! She has a unique ability among the swimmers in our group to be able to listen and then implement my suggestions. The improved technique and skills really paid off with best times in every event she swam, including a 20+ second improvement in the 200 Free and an almost a 12-second improvement in her 200 IM. I would love to see you at practice more!
- Vien Pogue swims so well at practice, she sometimes doubts herself, but her hard work paid off with a best time in every event she swam. Highlights include dropping 1.55 seconds in the 50 Back and 1.24 seconds in the 100 Free as well as swimming the 400 IM for the first time. Great job Vien!
- Sanvi Shrivastava is really good at racing. I would love to see her at practice more. She dropped in every event she swam including an amazing 10-second improvement in her 200 Free, almost 2 seconds dropped in her 200 Free, and more than 0.5 second in all four 50s! Really good meet Sanvi!
- Beata Sobol has good attendance and is also able to push herself well during our swimming sets. Beata improved in five events with three new races: the 200 Back, 200 Breast, and 400 IM. Her 200 IM also had a big 3.3-second drop. She has really improved her turns and skills over the last month or two. Great swimming Beata!
- Andy Yang has some of the best attendance in the group and it showed with best times in every event, including a 28-second improvement in his 200 Free, 8.5 seconds in his 100 Free, and multiple seconds dropped in three of his 50 swims! Wow Andy, you are on fire! Keep up the great work.
