Summer Long Course Championship Recaps

We decided to combine all three summer champs meets into one email. These meets include PNS Senior Champs (13&Older), PNS Age Group Champs (12&Under), and Futures. Congratulations to all our swimmers on a fantastics Long Course season!

PNS Senior Champs

Senior Epic

Senior Epic had 18 athletes racing at PNS Champs this summer. Some of our swimmers competed at the THSC Classic in Mt. Hood, Oregon the week before Champs and were racing their second Champs Meet. We also had three swimmers who were still training to compete at Futures, which was the week after this meet. The great news is that although we had swimmers in different stages of their preparation, everyone in the group swam extremely well with an abundance of personal best times and two new Team Records! Enjoy some highlights from our group:

Our Graduating Seniors πŸ’Ÿ

  • Fredrik Larsen was in his final preparation for Futures and swam some off events at PNS. He went a best time in the 200 Free, qualified for finals and lowered his time in both prelims and finals with a total of 3 seconds dropped. He was very excited to get a AAA Time in this event!
  • Kyler Brumfield swam only two events to say goodbye to the KCAC pool. She had lots of fun with her farewell party, swimming an amazing 200 Back to drop almost 4 seconds from her old time and get a new A time.
  • Alexander Werth had a rough first day but bounced back in great style to get a new Summer Sectionals cut in the 200 Breast, dropping another half second from Mt. Hood the week before! He also had a strong 800 Free with a solid 12-second drop. He was very happy with his season at the end of the weekend.
  • Alexandru Popov had a light meet lineup due to his preparation for Futures. At PNS he tested different strategies for his races and went a second off his best in the 100 Breast and swam right at his time in the 50 Free.

It was a great pleasure to coach all of you and to be part of your life for a certain period of time. You will be successful in all you choose to do due to your ability to commit and work hard towards your goals. Thanks for being an example to this group. Wishing you a wonderful college experience and come back to train with us next summer!

The Epic crew πŸ’ͺ

  • Jaiden Sreenivasan was also in his final preparation for Futures and went 5-of-5 best times. His outstanding swim was the 400 IM where he dropped almost 5 seconds to achieve another Winter Juniors cut and win his first gold medal at PNS! His new time is a Wave Open Record as well as the 15-16 Record. He also got a new Futures cut in the 100 and 200 Fly and broke the 15-16 Team Record in the 400 Free.
  • Nik Brusilovski went four best times swimming even faster than the week before at Mt. Hood. He qualified for finals in the 200 Back and had a solid 4-second improvement overall, dropping time at prelims and again at finals. He also scored points for Wave in the 800 Free finishing 12th.
  • Rik Brusilovski had a spectacular 400 IM and earned his first AA time and a Zones cut with a monster drop of 23 seconds! He also went a best time in the 100 Breast, dropping another half second from his previous time.
  • Henry Geitz went 3-of-4 best times and crushed his old times by a lot! His strongest swims were the 200 and 400 IM with an impressive 7.45 second drop in the former and 9 seconds in the latter. Both swims are new A Times.
  • Raymond Chen had the same meet lineup as last week in Oregon where Ray went best times. And Ray scorched their 100 Fly, drop a few more tenths!
  • Ethan Na went a best time in the 50 Free leading off the 200 Free Relay and breaking the 26 seconds barrier for the very first time in meters (25.95)! He had a full meet schedule and was very consistent in all his races going right at his times in all of them.
  • Owen Ledrick swam four events and brought home two personal bests. He swam even faster than at Mt. Hood in both the 100 and 200 Breast, earning personal bests in both races for the second week in a row, shaving off a few more tenths of seconds in each event.
  • Aadhav Saravanan swam only one day and went two best times. He went a personal best in the 200 Fly ,dropping 3.47 seconds. Aadhav has been working on some specific strokes for his 400 IM and it showed at this meet where he dropped 3.51 seconds.
  • Noah Sattari was able to swim one day only in Federal Way and went right at the times he had before the Oregon meet where he went personal bests in all his events.
  • Jenna Kimborowicz had another busy week of swims after the THSC Classic and was happy with her results at PNS. Jenna swam right at her times in the 200 and 400 Free (but faster than Oregon) and splashed her way to a personal best in the 800 Free, dropping another 2 seconds and finishing 6th to earn some big points for Wave.
  • Anouk Balog crushed all her events and went 4-of-4 personal best times. Her most outstanding swim was the 200 Fly where she dropped 6.64 seconds and qualified for finals. She also earned a new AA time in the 200 Free and 400 Free.
  • Rina Yuan has been improving in her freestyle events all season and at PNS she went a best time in the 100 Free, dropping half a second. She also led off the 200 Free relay going 28 seconds and only 0.15 off her best time.
  • Hailey Crawford knows how to take advantage of the opportunities and went a best time in one of the events she didn’t swim in Oregon. That was the 200 Breast where she dropped 1.45 seconds, getting very close to break the 3:00 barrier.
  • Caroline Bryant has been improving on her butterfly the entire season and swam a best time again dropping 1.48 seconds. She also swam her 50 Free under 29 seconds one more time showing her consistency in the event.

Congrats for your fabulous season! You were amazing! Enjoy your time off and I will see you in the fall!

Senior 1

We had 11 swimmers compete at the 13&Over LC Champs. Everyone who showed up for the meet put their game faces on and swam to the absolute best of their abilities. It was so awesome to see all the swimmers crushing their best times and having a blast to finish off the season. We had some really incredible racing including two new Spring Sectionals qualifiers, two new Summer Sectionals cuts, and two new team records.

  • Oleg Arlouski was absolutely on fire all weekend, turning in five new best times. He had a strong showing in the 100 Fly, qualifying for finals and seeing a small time drop. He then took that momentum into his 200 Fly and absolutely blasted it, qualifying for Spring Sectionals for the first time and finishing Top 8 in the event.
  • Daniel Cho had a very solid meet. He was a valuable member of several of our relays and had great success in his individual events, achieving new best times in both the 50 and 100 Free. His best race was his 200 Breast, as the small drop he earned put him under the Summer Sectionals cut for his second qualifying time.
  • Nethaniah Gashaw made the absolute most out of her meet. She slam-dunked it, dropping time in all her races. She started out with a super strong and smooth 100 Fly, dropping 3 seconds. She then turned around and crushed her time in the 200 Fly, dropping 11 seconds.
  • Penelope Hepkin came into the meet riding an awesome performance at the Seattle AG Open. She kept the good vibes rolling as she had some more awesome swims at Champs. She was a member of two relays that both scored points. Her best individual event was her 100 Free: she had a blistering race on her way to dropping almost a full second.
  • Iris Huang finished her season racing hard and putting up very solid swims. She has been pushing herself in her sprint events and she is very close to a major breakthrough. She looked super strong in the 50 Free, accelerating all the way into the finish and hitting right at her best time.
  • Adrian Juco had a fantastic meet, achieving best times in all his races. He turned in strong swim after strong swim. He has been working hard to improve his butterfly this summer and that work really paid off as he dropped 3 seconds in the 100 Fly. He had a very exciting 100 Breast finishing 4th overall and getting a Summer Sectionals cut in the process.
  • Cora Ledrick continued to show off her freestyle dominance, particularly in the mid distance events. She started it off by dropping a second in the 200 to go under 2:20 for the first time ever. She wasn’t done there, however, as she turned around and dropped another second in finals. Still not finished, she went and swam a gutsy 400 Free staying strong all the way through, dropping 6 seconds, and going under 5:00 for the first time.
  • Anton Mazepa came into the meet with the goal of qualifying for Senior Zones and achieving a β€œAAA” time. He had some great races, starting off with a monster swim in the 1500 free resulting in a 7th place finish. He would finish the meet with an amazing 200 Back. He went out and swam with everything he had. His guts paid off as he dropped 3 seconds, got a Spring Sectionals cut, and a β€œAAA” time in the event.
  • Ani Purkayastha stepped up big time and participated in all four 4 of our relays, all of which scored points. She had some great individual races as well. She started with a very solid half second drop in her 100 Back. Then in the 200 Back, she would drop a little more than a second and qualify for finals. In finals she had a good swim going under her previous best time and moving up a spot.
  • Dylan Vu raced hard and had a fun time as he competed for the last time under the Wave banner.
  • Daniel Xia took the meet by storm, dropping time in most of his events and qualifying for finals in all but one event. He tore it up in the 100 Breast finishing 3rd overall, qualifying for Summer Sectionals, and breaking the team record. He was far from done. He turned in a huge swim in the 200 Breast, stepping up one last time in finals, dropping 2 more seconds, lowering his own team record in the race, and finishing 2nd overall.

Senior Prep

  • Daniel Chen squeaked into PNS Champs despite a birthday a month before with a huge drop in the 200 Breast at the Seattle Open. He matched that time at champs and also had an amazing 100 Breast with an 8+ second drop. In addition, he had a best time in his 200 Free to round out the meet. Nice job Daniel!
  • Lena Duryee had the largest improvement for the Sr. Prep group at Sr. PNS, dropping 22+ seconds in the 200 Fly! She also dropped 1.37 in her 100 Free to get another AA time and showed off solid improvements in her 100 Fly and 50 Free. She finished the meet with several fantastic relay swims as well. Excellent job Lena!
  • Deming Gates had such a beautiful 100 Fly. He swam with a vastly improved stroke for about 80 meters of the race. He ended up with a 7-second improvement, and he has a few more to drop in that race once he can finish the race with his new technique. He also had solid improvements in his 100 Free and 100 Back. Nice job working on your butterfly Deming!
  • Bennett Geitz dropped in every event he swam at this meet! He had a monster 18+ second improvement in his 400 IM, improving in every leg of the swim from his previous best. He had an outstanding 400 Free with a 6+ second improvement and much tougher middle 100 splits. He achieved two AA motivational times with those two swims. He also had significant improvements in his 100 Fly, 200 Fly, and 200 Free swims.
  • Kirsten Hau - Wow, Kirsten had amazing swims, but specifically in some of the hardest and most difficult events. She dropped almost 11.5 seconds in her 200 Fly and improved 15+ seconds in her 400 IM. She added a bit in her 50 Free and 100 Breast, and I think I know the reason why. Kirsten needs harder, more mentally challenging races like the mile, 400 Free, 200 Breast to really get her excited about racing. The 50 Free and 100 Breast just didn’t get her focused in the same way. I will make sure she swims the six hardest races on her schedule for the next champs meet. Wonderful mental and physical toughness Kirsten!

PNS Age Group Champs

Wave peaked at just the right time, earning a 4th place finish at Age Group Champs in Federal Way, led by our top scorers Amelia Pletosu and Deniz Cankaya. Both swimmers had historic swims with Top 5 All Time finishes, including Amelia’s second fastest 1500 Free in Wave history! Multiple swimmers scored Top 16 finishes to help us to that great finish. Lots of swimmers earned new motivational caps, including Amelia (AAA) and Deniz (AAA) as well as Vien Pogue (AA), Sophia Gorveatt (AAA), Max Smagley (A), Andy Yang (A), Kaylan Li (A), and Evan Deng (A). Ending the meet in style, sisters Fiona and Nora Herman each earned their first AA time in the final event, the 200 Free!

Our relays also performed superbly, with most placing in the Top 16. Well done Wave on an outstanding Long Course season!

White Group

Our three white groupersβ€”Andrew Zhu, Max Sun, and Jayden Horβ€”had a great time at KCAC, all dropping time and (most importantly) looking great in the water. They also got an eye-full of the best swimmers in the area, and what swimming looks like on a bigger stage. A couple highlights:

  • Max Sun the youngest Wave-r in Champs tackled the 100 Fly, dropping another 4.5 seconds to place 17th.
  • Jayden Hor dropped time every time he dove in. In his 100 Breast, he dropped 4 seconds in Prelims, then another 0.8 in finals to finish 5th and score 14 points for Wave! The next day, in his 200 Free, he dropped 25 seconds(!) and earned his first B-time in a second stroke! Jayden also pinch-hit in the Boys 10&U Medley Relay for a sick swimmer. The boys dropped much time and earned 7th, scoring another 24 points for the team!
  • Andrew Zhu had an amazing 100 Breast, dropping 2 seconds, and finished 15th in the 50 Fly!

Great work, champions!

Purple Group

Purple sent four swimmers to Champs and all had some big swims!

  • Lola Cheng dropped almost 4 seconds in her first-ever Champs meet in the 200 Breast and swam her first-ever 100m Free!
  • Max Smagley earned his first A time in the 50 Back by dropping 2 seconds and dropped another half second in his 100 Free!
  • Piper Wiegand improved in both her events, including a 2-second drop in her 50 Breast!
  • Kyra Yuan had two impressive breaststroke races and just missed a best time in her 200 Breast!

Age Group

We finished with our best meet of the season as we saw huge numbers of best times to go along with multiple Top 16 finishes and new US motivational times! Well done, AGS!

  • Alex Arlouski swam right at his best time in two races, dropping a bit in the 100 Back, and shattered his previous best in his 200 Back by 4 seconds!
  • Deniz Cankaya had the best meet of his career, placing Top 3 in three races, including a 2nd place in his first-ever 400 Free. He dropped time in nearly every race and swam faster in all three of his Finals races than in morning Prelims, moving up multiple spots in both the 50 and 100 Back. He was our top scoring male with 65 points!
  • Henry Cheng turned up to race after a season of hard work and it paid off, especially in his 100 Back where he dropped almost 9 seconds to earn a B time, his first 11-12 motivational cut outside of breaststroke!
  • Berit Dunn swam both the 50 and 100 Breast and finished 17th in each by breaking the :50 mark in the 50 Breast and the 1:50 mark in the 100 Breast! Excellent job, Berit!
  • Ellen Feng has worked hard on improving her fly and back techniques and it showed as she had some very nice drops in her 100 Fly and 50 Back while swimming right at her best time in the 50 Fly and 100 Back!
  • Olivia Henaire has focused very hard on fixing her free technique and it paid off big time with a 20-second drop in her 200 Free and a 4-second drop in her 400 Free. Her free leg in her 200 IM was super strong, leading her to a 13-second drop!
  • Fiona Herman went 7-for-7 with best times, dropping huge chunks in nearly every race. Her highlight was dropping 6 seconds in the 200 Free prelims, then dropping another 4 seconds in finals to move up two places and earn her first-ever AA time!
  • Arvin Kandiah turned in some huge performances, including placing in the Top 16 in both his breaststroke races and making a last-minute switch in strokes for the medley relay to help us pick up a big 7th place!
  • Olivia Liu stepped up huge in her freestyle events, grabbing A times in the 100 and 200 and scoring 6th in the 400 Free!
  • Eleanor Lopez picked up two best times and just missed a third as well as earning 16th in her 50 Back!
  • Andy Nguyen picked up best times in both his breaststroke races, highlighted by a 1+ second drop in his 100 Breast!
  • Irene Qu had three huge swims, including two new BB times where she dropped 6 seconds in her 200 Breast and almost 8 seconds in her 200 Back!
  • Leo Steijn swam like a beast in his first Champs meet, dropping time in both his breaststroke races, including a 3.6-second improvement in his 100 to finish 9th!
  • Vedah Tuladhar had an outstanding 50 Fly, slashing almost 4 seconds off her best to pick up a new BB time!
  • George Ursulenko made finals for the first time ever in his 100 Breast, where he dropped 4 seconds to earn 8th place to go along with 12th place in the 50 Free!
  • Isshin Yokoyama was right on his best time in two races and swam his first-ever 200m Back, picking up a new B time in the process!
  • Ally Yuan swam the best meet of her young life with six best times including a 7.5-second drop in her 200 Free and finaled in the 100 Back to earn 8th. Her best swim, however, was her 200 IM where she dropped 4+ seconds in prelims, then dropped another 3 seconds in finals to move up two spots and score big points for Wave!

Senior Prep

Our group finished the long course season with loads of best times and big finishes and so many swimmers earning their first motivational time at a new level! Way to go, Senior Prep!

  • Kamilla Bugaitsova saw huge drops in her longer free races: -4 seconds in her 200 Free, -8.7 seconds in her 400 Free, and an astonishing -38 seconds in her 1500 Free! She was also right on her best time in several others.
  • Evan Deng was incredible all weekend, dropping huge hunks of time every time he dove in, including both of his Finals swims where he drastically improved on his prelim morning swims by about 2 seconds!
  • Claire Gao dropped or was right on her best time the first two days before a shoulder injury cut her weekend short. She had two jaw-dropping 200 IMs, dropping 26 seconds in prelims then coming back to drop another 4 in finals to win the B Final!
  • Sophia Gorveatt earned her first AAA time in the 200 Fly by dropping 10 seconds in prelims, then hung on in finals, gritting through a bad muscle cramp to still go 5 seconds faster than her previous best and pick up 3rd place. She also dopped almost 13 seconds in her 400 Free!
  • Nora Herman pulled off multiple huge swims, including breaking 3:00 in her 200 Fly to make finals and dropping 10 seconds in her 400 Free. She saved her best performance for her last event, 200 Free, dropping 8 seconds in prelims then another 2 seconds in finals to earn her first AA time!
  • Yuzuki Ishizuka had two excellent swims in her 50 and 100 Fly, dropping time in each. In her 50, she dropped 1.36 seconds to earn a BB time!

  • Karolina Patusiak had a breakthrough meet, going 5-of-6 in her swims, including a massive 6+-second drop in her 200 Breast!
  • Amelia Pletosu was an absolute beast, going 9-for-9 in best times, placing Top 6 in five races including a silver in her 1500 Free (she dropped almost 2 minutes off her previous time!) and two bronzes. Not including her relay swims, she scored 73 points for Wave!
  • Vien Pogue dropped huge in several races, including 12.5 seconds in her 200 Back and 18.5 seconds in her 200 Breast! Her personal highlight, however, was leading off the Medley Relay with a blistering 3-second drop in the 50 Back to earn her first-ever AA time!
  • Sanvi Shrivastava swam two excellent fly races and dropped just enough time in her 50 Fly to pick up a new BB cut!
  • Beata Sobol also had two excellent fly races, earning best times in both with a big 2.5-second drop in the 50 and a new BB time in the 100!
  • Ella Tulanon had monster drops in all four freestyle races, topped by a 43-second drop in her 1500 to earn 14th. She also dropped 10 seconds in her 400!

  • Andy Yang made his first Champs finals, dropping 4 seconds and moving up two places from prelims to score 6th in the 200 Breast as well as earn his first A time. He also had huge drops in his 50 and 100 Breast as well as his 100 Free!

Futures

WAVE had three swimmers qualified for the Futures Championships in Fargo, ND. That was our last meet of the season and before we hear about the many exciting swims at the meet, I wanted to share the significance and achievement for athletes to make this meet. The Futures Meet is a stepping stone for athletes who have qualified at a Sectional Level, but have not yet reached the Junior National Level of swimming. There are only five Futures meets offered across the country each summer, and teams are assigned a location to attend. This meet has very tough time standards and when swimmers reach this level, they are nearing the top of the pyramid in the swimming community. Our achievements in numbers were:

  • 5 Personal Best Times
  • 4 Team Records (1 Men Open + 3 Boys 15-16 Records)
  • 5 finals
  • 2 new Futures Cut

Jaiden Sreenivasan: 1500 Free, 400 IM, 400 Free, 200 Breast, 800 Free

Jaiden's 1500 Free on our first day set up the tone for our week at Futures. He had a gigantic 27.5-second drop to finish 4th and went to the podium for the first time in a national level meet. His time was also a new Futures cut and a AAAA Time. Then he swam the 400 IM where he qualified for the A final and finished 8th. On his third day, he swam the 400 Free where he had a fantastic race winning his final and dropping another 1.46 seconds from a time he did a week before at PNS Champs. His 400 Free was also a new Futures cut. Jaiden swam the 200 Breast that same day but was disqualified in his turn teaching us some lessons too. To finish the meet strong, the best came at the end, in the 800 Free with an expressive 8.54 second drop where he finished with a bronze medal and a big smile. Jaiden's new Team Records were:

  • Open Record: 1500 Free
  • Boys 15-16 Record: 400, 800 & 1500 Free

Fun fact: Jaiden brought almost all his meals ready from Seattle to Fargo to guarantee that he would eat what he needed during the meet. He swam 4 finals and scored 42 points for our team.

Fredrik Larsen: 200 Free, 100 & 200 Back

Fredrik finished his season going a best time in the 200 Free again! He swam a personal best at PNS Champs a few days earlier and did it again dropping another 0.15 for a total drop of 4.66 seconds in one week. He also swam right at his time in the 100 Back and qualified for finals in the 200 Back where he swam a second off his best time. Fredrik did a great job with his backstroke starts and underwater dolphin kicks in both 100 and 200 events.

Fun fact: This was Freddy's last meet swimming for Wave since he just graduated from high school and he was happy and excited to compete and race, as usual. He helped me during the meet writing down all splits from his teammates while also cheering for them. I promoted him as my assistant coach on day 1.

Alexandru Popov: 100 & 200 Breast, 200 IM

Popov warmed up on his first day going 0.5 off his best time in the 100 Breast. After that he felt more comfortable and swam a solid 200 Breast where he went right at his best time. Then on his third swim, the 200 IM, Popov had his best race of the week looking really good in all four strokes and going a best time by 0.34.

Fun fact: This was Popov’s first solo trip for a meet and he did a fantastic job managing all his responsibilities over there showing how mature and ready for college he is. This was Popov’s last meet with Wave and I promoted him as my second assistant coach during the meet.

I had an amazing time with these boys at Futures! Congrats to all of you for the stunning week in Fargo. You worked extremely hard throughout the season and the results were very exciting! Wave on 3!!!
