SSCD Autumn Invitational Meet Recap

The Select Team had an incredible first meet of the 2023-24 short course season at Kamiak High School in Mukilteo on Sept 30-Oct 1. We saw tons of huge drops even though all the groups eased into the new season, as well as loads of new cuts for PNS Champs, AGIs, and new motivational times. Way to go, Select!

Age Group 1

Age Group 1 crushed the first meet of the year. I was so impressed with how the whole group did at the meet. We had almost every swimmer go at least one best time at the meet, with most of the group going five or six best times. Great way to start off the year and set the bar for the rest of the season. This group is going to be ready to start making a name for themselves about being the fastest 10&Unders in the state very soon!!!!

Group Shout Outs go to:

  • Aiden Ye showed up ready to go this weekend dropping 52 seconds over four of his swims and swimming his first-ever 100 Free and 100 IM. He also got B times in the 50 Back and 50 Free.
  • Alyssa Yang went an impressive 6-for-6 in best times, dropping 43 seconds across all her events. She also got a B time in the 100 IM.
  • Benji Ovendale earned five new best times and completed his first 200 IM. He dropped 9 seconds over four of his races and then another 35 seconds in the 200 Free.
  • Albert O had a great meet dropping in five races as well as completing his first 200 Free. Albert dropped more than 40 seconds in the five events he had swam before.
  • Olivia Horng had a fantastic weekend dropping time in four swims and completing her first 200 IM. She dropped 20 seconds over those four events and got three B times in the 50 Breast, 50 Fly, and 50 Free.
  • Lingyi Li didn’t just go 6-for-6 in best times…she went 6-for-6 in new BB times!

Great work to ALL the Age Group 1 Swimmers. It was a great start to the year, and I am pumped for a fast and fun year!!!

Age Group 2

A big shout out to everyone for so many amazing swims up at Kamiak. It was great to see everyone’s hard work payoff, especially the mental aspect of focusing on the fine details we’ve practiced like our breakouts off our dives and turns or our finishes. We especially focused on our 100 Fly and saw several first-time legal swims and huge time drops. This kind of early attention and hard work is going to have a huge impact as we go further into the season!

  • Lucy Broyles was our swimmer of the meet. She has been working for a year on learning to swim fast and finally broke through in a huge way! Sometimes, hard work can feel like it takes ages to pay off, but woah, Lucy’s efforts really paid off in every single race this weekend as she earned new best times in each race + three new motivational cuts!
  • Keira Spitze and Esha Bhatia both earned their first-ever BB time, and both had swims with 10+-second drops! Hard work pays off…and it was Esha’s last meet before aging up!
  • Irene Qu broke the :30 barrier for the first time in the 50 Free and dropped 22 seconds in her 200 Back to highlight her 6-for-6 performance!
  • Isshin Yokoyama swam his first :28 in the 50 Free…and is now less than :02 from breaking the 1:00 barrier in his 100! He also earned five best times and finished Top 6 in every race!
  • Anu Bathe had our biggest time drop of the entire meet: -45 seconds in his 200 Free!
  • George Ursulenko dropped 30.5 seconds in his 100 Fly…and more than 10 seconds faster than in our time trial less than a week earlier! Like Lucy, George has worked for ages on getting his fly to this point…and he easily earned a B time doing so while also blasting past the 2:00 barrier!
  • Leo Steijn had the best meet of his life: 6-for-6 with a new motivational cut in each race and minimum drops of 5 seconds in every race, including two drops of 14+ seconds!
  • Serena Zheng has been destroying sets in practice and it was obvious she was going to do the same thing at the meet: 6-for-6 best times including drops of -11.6 (100 Free), -19.3 (100 Back), and -20.5 (100 Fly)! She has been the most improved swimmer in AG2 so far this season!
  • Alex Arlouski picked up five new B times while going 6-for-6 in best times!
  • Ahana Bhattacharya also went 6-for-6, highlighted by a new B time in her 200 IM with a massive drop and breaking 3:00 for the first time!
  • Henry Cheng had two 16+-second drops and earned an AGI cut in his first-ever 200 Breast!
  • Rhea Dawani not only went 6-for-6 but swam her first legal 100 Fly and earned either a new B or BB time in every race!
  • Deniz Cankaya swam his first legal 100 Fly as well as winning three races, including a new AA time in his 100 Back!
  • Lucas Deng went 5-for-6 in best times including a 5+-second drop in his 100 Free!
  • Ellen Feng swam six best times, including an 8-second drop in her 100 Breast and a new BB time in her 100 Free!
  • Rihit Gandhi is discovering he’s an excellent free sprinter, shattering his old 50 and 100 Free times and earning an AGI cut in the 100!
  • Abby Gray turned in the best 100 Breast of her life, dropping almost 12 seconds and gaining another BB Time!
  • Olivia Henaire crushed her 100 Fly, dropping 6 seconds!
  • Fiona Herman finished Top 5 in all but one event, including two 1st places, and earned an A time in her 100 Free!
  • Jayden Hor destroyed his 100 Back time by 27 seconds to earn a new B time and score 4th place!
  • Elise Kabakci earned four best times, including a 5-second drop in her 50 Breast, as well as four Top 6 finishes!
  • Arvin Kandiah swam his first legal 100 Fly and dropped 9 seconds in his 100 IM!
  • Yihan Li dropped in five races, with her biggest drops being in the 100 Free and 100 IM as well as a 6th place in the 50 Back!
  • Jonathan Liu shredded his old times, easily going 6-for-6, highlighted by winning the 100 Free, an 11-second drop in his 100 Breast, and five new motivational times!
  • Olivia Liu scored two new B times in her first meet as an 11-yr-old with big drops in the 100 IM and 100 Free!
  • Eleanor Lopez was another 6-for-6 swimmer with drops of 3+ seconds in five of those races, highlighted by her 50 Fly where she finished 1st and picked up a new A time!
  • Elizabeth Luo made mincemeat of her old times—not surprising considering how hard she works day-in and day-out. Her 6-for-6 performance included three drops of 12+ seconds!
  • Ilia Maksimchuck earned a pair of best times highlighted by his fantastic 100 IM performance!
  • Max Malinovskyi picked up five new motivational times including a new A time in his 50 Back!
  • Andy Nguyen swam his first legal 200 Breast and not only earned a BB time, but his PNS cut as well! He also had two 11+-second drops!
  • Melissa Nguyen thought she was going to add 13 seconds to her 100 Fly time. Instead, she dropped 13 seconds, shattered the 2:00 barrier, and earned a B time. She also scored 6th in her 100 Breast by slashing 13 seconds in that race as well!
  • Han Sun also went 6-for-6 with three swims of 9+-second drops. His best race, however, was his 3rd place finish in the 50 Back where he also earned his first B time as an 11-yr-old!
  • Nika Svirydovich swam her first legal 100 Fly and picked up best times in two other races!
  • Vedah Tuladhar was another 6-for-6 swimmer highlighted by her amazing 100 Free where she cut nearly 8 seconds off her old time!
  • Arjun Yadav had five well-earned best times. Check out these drops: -16.4 in the 100 Back, -17.6 in the 100 IM, and an astonishing -31.8 in the 100 Fly! When you workout as hard as Arjun does, these kinds of drops are not surprising!
  • Ally Yuan had one of her best meets ever, scoring three 1st places, finishing Top 4 in every event, and a best time in every race, including a new A time in the 100 Free!
  • Grace Zhang’s first month of training this season was one of her best ever, and it showed in her results as she went 6-for-6. None of the drops were huge, but her swims were consistently fast, a reflection of how she’s been training!
  • Andrew Zhu completed his first-ever legal 100 Fly, earning a B time in the process, and scored two new BB times as well. His 100 Back, however, was his most spectacular race as he crushed his old time by 32 seconds and earned a B time!

Senior 1

The Senior 1 Group had 23 swimmers compete at the SSCD Autumn Invitational. As a whole, this group absolutely crushed, the swimmers turned in good swim after good swim, and we saw tons of new best times. This meet was used primarily as a training meet: even though we trained hard all the way up to the meet, everyone still stepped up and swam super-fast even being as tired as they were. We had nine swimmers compete for the first time as members of Wave and all had lights-out performances. It was very exciting to see such fast swimming and excellent racing this early on in the season. I am very proud of everyone and can’t wait to see what they can accomplish this season.

  • Quinn Anderson competed under the Wave banner for the first time. He has looked great during sprint sets in practice and that certainly showed in his racing. He went a perfect 6/6 on best times with his biggest drop coming in the 200 Fly.
  • Bradley Barkans returned to the purple and black this season. Not feeling 100 as the kids say he still stepped up and raced hard on his way to two new personal bests. He had a strong swim in the 500 pacing his way to a nice 3-second drop in the event.
  • Tanvi Bathe has been getting used to racing recently as she also competes for her high school. Her first club meet proved to be a good one. She added herself to the list of swimmers going a perfect 6/6 on best times. Her best race was her 50 Free where she broke :30 for the first time and got a BB time.
  • Bianca Benson wanted to make her Wave debut a special one. That is exactly what she did as she turned in several rock-solid performances dropping time in almost all her events. She was the backstroke queen of the weekend, absolutely crushing her 100 Back then turning around and dropping 2 seconds in the 200 Back and earning herself a champs cut.
  • Kevin Flannery decided to make a big splash at his first meet with the team. He was another 6/6 perfect time drop swimmer. He has been working hard in practice on his breaststroke and that showed as he went best times in all the distances. He had a huge swim in the 200 Breast by dropping two seconds and going under 2:30 for the first time.
  • Abigail Gong, another first time Wave racer, and also another 6/6 time dropper. She has been working very hard on her underwater dolphin kick and it really paid off as she was able to use those underwater skills on her way to best times. She absolutely crushed the 200 Free, dropping 12 seconds and swimming a very solid and strong race.
  • Peter Hansen has really been looking strong both in the water and at dryland. His improved strength has really helped him improve in his sprint events. He had stellar swims in the 100 Free, 100 Back, and 100 Fly, sprinting his way to new best times in all three races. He is eager to keep swimming fast.
  • Penelope Hepkin put her game face on and joined the 6/6 club. Her freestyle events were spectacular at all the distances from 50 to 500. She had a wonderful 500 where she paced well and swam strong the entire race, breaking through the 6:00 barrier for the first time.
  • Adrian Juco had a blast throwing down in the breaststroke events with his buddies on the team. He has been working hard to improve all four strokes in order to be faster in the IM events. The work he’s put in paid off as he had a huge 4-second drop in the 200 IM.
  • Aditi Kandiah has been committed to underwater dolphin kicks on both her back and front. Her efforts paid off big time in her 100 events. She crushed her time in both 100 Fly, dropping 5 seconds then turning around and dropping a second in the 100 Free and 100 Back.
  • Cora Ledrick only competed one day at the meet but made it count. She is feeling the effects of double practices, juggling both high school and club swimming, but still managed to have strong races. Her breaststroke has been steadily improving and that showed as she dropped more than 1 second in the 50.
  • Anton Mazepa made his way onto the 6/6 squad racing well all weekend. He has been working on all his strokes at practices and is showing improvement. He started off by dropping in the 400 IM then followed up with a monster 9-second drop in the 200 IM.
  • Joseph Nguyen has been getting stronger and working hard on building up his endurance. He still has great raw speed and did a good job all weekend of closing races strong and not falling off at the end. He was right at his best time in all of his events and raced his way to a small drop in the 100 Breast.
  • Sonny Nguyen had a very strong showing. He was right on his best time in his 50 Free then turned around and totally crushed his 100 Back, dropping 4 seconds. He is excited to keep working on his speed and continuing to see improvement in all his strokes.
  • Kieran O’Gorman was another first time Wave racer. He only swam one day of the meet but looked strong and smooth in all his races. He was right on his best time in both the 100 Fly and 100 Free, and finished off with a well split 200 Back.
  • Neha Phatak has been busy racing during the high school season and took advantage of experience she has gained to crush her first club meet of the season. She turned in best times in five of her races and was right at her best in the sixth. She turned in a huge 3-second drop in the 200 Back swimming strong all the way to the finish.
  • Ani Purkayastha has been working hard on her underwater skills and took this meet as a great opportunity to practice them while racing. She had strong racing with great walls and her times were all right at her best. She had a stellar 200 Back doing a fantastic job with her dolphin kicks off all the walls.
  • Rahul Purkayastha had an absolute blast on his way to a 6/6 performance. He was on fire all weekend, swimming lights out and blasting his old times. He had a spectacular 500 Free to cap off the meet, crushing his previous best by 13 seconds and breaking the 6:00 barrier for the first time.
  • Amaris Rus had a great showing his first time out as a Wave swimmer. He has been working on his fly in practice and the hard work he has put in paid off in a huge way over the weekend. He started off by dropping 11 seconds in the 200 Fly then crushed the 100 Fly, dropping 5 seconds and breaking 1:00 for the first time.
  • Boris Shakhov has been steadily increasing his sprint speed. He showed that all weekend by blasting his way through the 50s and 100s and even going right at his best time in the 200 Free. He had a phenomenal 100 Fly taking it out super fast and holding on well to break 1:00 for the first time.
  • Gabe Traina made a big splash in his Wave opening, going a perfect 6/6. He has been training hard and saw some very solid improvements. He had huge swims in both the 200 Free and IM dropping 13 and 16 seconds respectively. He is excited to keep training and seeing the drops that will come with his hard work.
  • Isabella Vasilescu had an awesome time out at her first meet with Wave. She was right at or faster than her best times in all her races. She looked super strong in the mid distance events turning in huge swims in the 200 IM and 200 Back, dropping 5 seconds or more in both.
  • Daniel Xia had a great first meet of the season. He turned in best times in most of his races and was right on in the others. He had a blast racing with his teammates in both the 100 and 200 Breast and coming away with best times in both events.

Senior Epic

Senior Epic did a great job on their first meet of the season. We focused on skills and race strategies instead of performance. All swimmers in our group swam either the 400 IM or 500 Free, some off events, and only a few of their main events. It was a good starting point to see where everyone is at with their training. We still had many fast swims and best times achieved last weekend! Enjoy some highlights from our group:

  • Oleg Arlouski got two new AA Times with excellent swims in the 100 Fly (-2.44 seconds) and 200 Fly (-6.80 seconds).
  • Anouk Balog felt strong in her 500 Free, swam hard and was happy with her result. She had a strong 200 Free too.
  • Nik Brusilovski updated an old time in the 100 Fly and dropped 9 seconds swimming under the 1:00 for the first time. He also swam a fast 50 Free where he dropped 0.35.
  • Rik Brusilovski has been improving his breaststroke technique and went three best times at the meet. He dropped time in the 50 and 100 Breast as well as in the 400 IM.
  • Carolyne Bryant had a great weekend with very solid freestyle events swimming strong in all distances from the 50 to 500! She also dropped time in the 100 Back.
  • Daniel Cho was hesitant to swim the 400 IM, so we planned a strategy for him to focus more on his breaststroke and he did a great race dropping almost 6 seconds from his old time. He also won the 50 Breast.
  • Hailey Crawford had a strong meet with many fast swims. She managed to within a second of her best times in both the 100 Breast and 100 Free with solid race strategies.
  • Henry Geitz’s strongest swims of the weekend were the 100 Fly and 100 Back. He also had a solid 400 IM and is looking forward to working more in his breaststroke to level up his IM races.
  • Iris Huang—despite almost missing one of her turns in the 100 Free—still swam fast going only one second off her best time. She also looked good in the 50 Fly and the 200 Free.
  • Jenna Kimborowicz went a best time in her 50 Fly and was very satisfied with her 500 Free strategy and how she felt during the race.
  • Owen Ledrick broke the :30 barrier in the 50 Breast for the first time and swam a strong 500 Free where he raced neck to neck with one of his teammates for the entire distance. Great race for both of them!
  • Samantha Merriam joined our team this season and is adapting to the new training. Sam did a great job listening to feedback and executing the race strategies we discussed before her races. Welcome to the team, Samantha!!
  • Ethan Na did a great job applying the race strategies we planned for his 100 and 200 Free and had excellent races. He went a best time in the 100 Free (getting a new AA Time) and—to his own surprise—swam right at his time in the 200 Free.
  • Noah Sattari had a solid 100 Fly with strong underwater dolphin kicks. He also had a mission to get an official time in the 400 IM since he didn't have a short course time until last weekend. Mission accomplished!
  • Jaiden Sreenivasan has been working on his speed and got solid races in the 100 and 200 Free with strong finishes. He also updated a (very) old time in the 50 Back.
  • Megan Traina joined our team this season. She went two personal bests in both the 50 and 500 Free. In the distance event, she dropped 13 seconds, earned an A Time, and was very happy with her swim. Welcome to the team, Megan!!
  • Andy Wang felt strong in the 50 Fly and went a lifetime best by 0.66. He also swam a solid 100 Breast going less than a second off his best time.
  • Leah Winn is also new to our team and has been putting the work in. She managed to finish strong in all her events, demonstrating great speed to close her races. Welcome to the team, Leah!!
  • Rina Yuan has been working on her underwater dolphin kicks and it showed on her events. She dropped 1.36 seconds in the 50 Back to achieve a new best time and had a strong 100 Free where she crushed her last 50.
