Distance Squad Dominates 1650 Free
BISC Bob Miller Sprint/Distance Open Recap
Wave sent 13 swimmers to the BISC Bob Miller Sprint/Distance Classic to compete in the 1650 freestyle. Swimmers do not get many opportunities outside of championship meets to compete in this event. The Wave swimmers were very excited to get a chance to swim the event to either tune up for swimming it at champs or to get a cut to swim the event at champs. Overall we experienced a ton of success. Our swimmers went out and absolutely crushed the race. Everyone who already had a time in the event saw massive drops. Many of the swimmers who got their champs cut in the event. The swimmers were all smiles as they saw super fast time up on the board when they finished their races. A wise coach once said a swimmer doesn’t choose the distance life, the distance life chooses the swimmer. All of these swimmers fully embraced being chosen by the distance life. GO WAVE!!!
Highlights
-
Nik Brusilovski came into the race hoping for a drop and a shot at the Spring Sectionals qualifying time. He got off to a great start and found his rhythm early on. He pushed himself all the way to the finish dropping 21 seconds and crushing the Sectionals time.
-
Henry Geitz competed in his first short course 1650 after finding his footing in the event over the summer in the 1500. He had a super steady swim holding just a bit off his end of season goal pace. He posted a super strong first time going sub 18:00 and qualifying for champs in the event.
-
Josh Rus is learning to embrace his role as a distance swimmer and really hitting his stride. He was dialed in for the whole race holding very consistently throughout the whole race. He finished with a huge time drop of 50 seconds.
-
Amaris Rus got off to a super hot start, going a best time in the first 200 and 500 of the race. He then settled into a nice steady pace for the remainder of the race. He turned in a strong swim dropping 1:10 and qualifying to swim the event at champs.

Kamilla Bugaitsova - Kamilla swam a smart and great race, going out just a bit slower than we talked about, but then came on strong at the end to get her PNS cut. She was very far away from her walls due to the T on the bottom of the pool being a bit farther away than we are used to. Kamilla ended up getting the PNS standard by a few seconds. More amazingly, she improved a jaw dropping 1 minute and 46 seconds faster than her! Way to go Kamilla!
-
Bennett Geitz - We had a plan to start out pacing at the pace needed to achieve the PNS cut and then descend from there, about 1:11's per 100 and then get faster by 400s. 400 yards into the race Bennett was 20+ seconds under that pace. He ended up averaging 1:06 per 100 for the entire 1650! Wow, very impressive Bennett! That was with no one to race as he was in the last heat with other first time milers. I cannot wait to see you race that again with some competition next to you. Just about perfect attendance and leading the fastest Sr. Prep lane is paying off big time! Nice job Bennett!
-
Sophia Gorveatt - Sophia may not know how to pace as well as I would like her to, but it doesn't seem to make much difference for her as she was out in 1:05, 1:08, 1:09, 1:09 and then settled into 1:10s for each 100 for the rest of the race. While she slowed down the last 500 yards of the race, that slowed down speed was still a second faster than the pace we had talked about shooting for on her first mile swim. Sophia averaged just under 1:09 per 100, and won the event for 13-14 girls despite swimming in the slowest heat! Great job Sophia!
-
Kirsten Hau - Kirsten loves a challenge, and this is definitely a challenging race. She settled into 1:17-1:18 pace per 100 and held that for 1300+ yards of the race. Turns were an issue, and I know you could be way faster per 100 without the "too far away from the wall" turns at many of the walls. Still Kirsten held her pace four seconds per 100 than her previous best and dropped a whopping 68+ seconds compared to last year's time! Great job Kirsten.
-
Olivia Henaire - Olivia swam such a perfect race. She was out 4 seconds faster than the PNS pacing, but then was consistently averaging about a second to a second and a half slower than PNS pacing for the next 1000 yards, 1:18s or so. I knew at the 1100 that she would have to finish fast, and I got a number of swimmers to help cheer her on. It worked, as she went 1:17, 1:16, 1:15, 1:16, 1:15, and finished with a 34! WOW, what a great finish! She picked up her PNS cut with a few seconds to spare. Exciting and fantastic first mile swim Olivia!
-
Nora Herman - Nora was so aggressive with her pacing. She just needed to hold 1:17s or so, but took out the first 500 in 1:14s or faster per 100. She settled into 1:15-1:16 for the next 1100, and crushed the PNS cut by over 45 seconds. She was too far away on many of her turns, and I know you can swim much faster if you nail those turns the correct distance away from the wall. Great swim Nora!
-
Lauren Hizzey - Lauren swam her first mile really well. She has a great 500 race, but didn't know quite what to expect here with the mile. She went out perfectly and then after the 200 mark would fluctuate from 1:13 to 1:17 pace off and on each 100 and just wouldn't settle on any one speed. Turns were definitely a challenge at this pool as the Ts were a bit farther away than what we are used to (this could have been a reason for the inconsistent pacing). The race was very well done, and there are lots of improvements we can make for the next time! Great job Lauren!
-
Ella Tulanon - Ella loves the mile, it is her favorite race, and she was excited to race it again. She is masterful at pacing and holding pace consistently. She started out at 1:14 and 1:15s and then settled into 1:16 pace per 100 the rest of the way almost like clockwork. She ended up pacing herself 5-6 seconds faster per 100 than last year's mile pace and she improved over 89 seconds faster than last year's mile time! Nice pace work Ella!
-
Piper Wiegand - Piper has such a perfect stroke for this race. She is so long and strong when she swims. She took a while to settle into her pacing, but once she hit the 400 mark she was dialed in and held 1:15-1:16 most of the way and had a great race with the swimmer next to her. The last 400 she was holding 1:14s and then a 1:12 at the last full 100. The final 50 she was a 33! That was a wonderful way to swim your first mile. Piper got another PNS cut with this swim! Excellent racing Piper!
