PNS Age Group Champs Meet Recap

Wave sent more than 80 swimmers to the King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way on December 8-10 for the PNS Age Group (14&U) Champs. We had our best finish in years, picking up 5th Place (out of nearly 30 teams and hundreds of athletes)! We were led by Daniel Xia, who not only won the 200 Breast with an exciting come-from-behind final 50 but earned his first Futures cut!

The Coaching Staff wants to thank all the families whose athletes trekked down “just” for relays. Without our relays, we would not have made the Top 10! Our relays scored HUGE points and most finished 3-5 seconds below their entry time (which was an accumulation of their best times). This meant our athletes were often turning in times that were 0.5-1.5 seconds faster than their lifetime best, so a huge shout out to all our relay swimmers!

Age Group 2

Phenomenal! That’s the only way I can describe how well we all swam! AG2 was led by Fiona Herman, who picked up two individual bronze medals along with her first-ever AAA time! She also finaled in the Top 8 for all her events! Please enjoy the highlights below for all our swimmers!

  • Alex Arlouski picked up a new best time in the 400 IM and was on two free relays!
  • Deniz Cankaya led off our A 400 Medley Relay and our B 200 Medley Relay. Despite not feeling well, he turned in two excellent swims!
  • Henry Cheng picked up three best times, highlighted by a nearly 2-second drop in his 200 Breast, and swam on the 400 Medley Relay!
  • Lucas Deng was a key member of both our B relays for the 10&U boys and posted excellent splits!
  • Ellen Feng earned her first 11-12 AA times, making the B Final in both the 50 and 100 Fly. In both races, she moved up two spots from her prelims finish, scoring huge points for Wave! Her 100 Fly was especially impressive as she swam more than 1 second faster in finals while in the 50 Fly, she broke the :30 barrier after several close tries! She also swam in four relays!
  • Rihit Gandhi anchored our 200 Free Relay, swimming a lifetime best!
  • Abby Gray had a Top 16 swim in her 50 Back and swam key legs in both our 10&U B relays!
  • Olivia Henaire swam all three distance races—500 Free, 400 IM, and 1650 Free—and was especially spectacular in the IM, where she dropped nearly 16 seconds! She also swam on three relays!
  • Fiona Herman had the meet of her life, making Top 8 in all but one race, and earning two 3rd and two 4th places as well as her first AAA time in the 50 Fly. Her best race, however, was the 500 Free where she dropped 21.6 seconds and moved up several places to score 4th! She was also a key member of our A 10&U girls relays!
  • Elise Kabacki swam in her first Champs meet, qualifying in all the freestyle events. She earned her first AA time in the 200 Free and made Top 8 in the 100 and 500 Free! She joined Fiona in both the A relays that finished 3rd and 4th!
  • Yihan Li led off both medley relays with superb swims despite having been sick all week! Great work, Yihan!!
  • Olivia Liu was a key member of our 200 Free Relay, swimming a lifetime best!
  • Andy Nguyen had lifetime bests in all his swims, including making the B Final in the 50 Breast and going under :35 both times, and dropping 1.5 seconds in his 100 Breast! He swam in three relays and led off the 200 Free Relay where he crushed the :30 barrier for the first, going a 29.3!
  • Melissa Nguyen raced a lifetime best in the 200 Free Relay!
  • Irene Qu picked up four best times, including an A time in the 50 breast, and swam the best 50 Free of her life in the 200 Free Relay, splitting 1.5 seconds under her best time!
  • Keira Spitze had an excellent split in the breaststroke leg of the medley relay team that finished 14th!
  • Leo Steijn had the best meet of his life, earning his first two A times and finaling in the 50 Breast! He suffered a tough DQ in prelims in the 100 Breast but came back for Time Trials and not only earned his A time but broke the 1:30 barrier! He also had a fantastic split in both his relays!
  • Han Sun led off both the medley relays, turning in great backstroke splits!
  • Isshin Yokoyama swam all four relays and led off both the free relays, picking up a lifetime best in his 50 Free!
  • Ally Yuan picked up seven best times (including leading off the free relay), three new A times, and made Top 16 in six events. Her biggest swims were the 200 Free (-5.4 seconds) and the 500 Free (-11.6 seconds)!
  • Andrew Zhu destroyed his best 50 Breast in the Medley Relay, leading the C team to 11th place!

Age Group 1

Age Group 1 had an amazing Champs meet. We had 4 individual qualifiers and another 14 kids swimming in relays on Saturday. A great turnout for the meet and some excellent swims over the weekend. Below are shoutouts for each athlete who competed. Great work to all the swimmers that competed and great job to all the kids in the group, everyone has been working hard and iron sharpens iron.

  • Adele Bokach swam the 50 Fly leg of the Medley Relay and split a 3 second best time!!!
  • Leo Chen swam the 50 Fly leg on the Medley Relay and split a 1.5 second best time!!!
  • Addy Clarke fought through sickness on Saturday and anchored the 200 Medley with a best time split. She also went a best time in her 50 Free on Friday (after already dropping the weekend before)!!!
  • Berit Dunn had a great weekend and killed on the relays. But her stand out swim was making finals and getting her first A cut in the 50 Breast on Sunday.
  • Vivian Hu - swam in the Free Relay and split a second faster then her best time!!!
  • Lingyi Li swam in the Medley Relay and the Free Relay, crushing a best time split in the 50 Free!!!
  • Anika Lichtenberg swam in both relays, splitting a best time in the 50 Free as the anchor in the Free Relay.
  • Rinat Maksyutov had four individual swims and swam in both relays. He crushed the lead off leg of the 200 Medley with his first ever A Cut!!!
  • Albert O had four individual swims and the Medley Relay. His standout swims were both on Friday going best times in the 100 Back (9-second drop) and 100 Breast (4second drop)!
  • Andrew Ouyang anchored two relays this weekend and came in hot going a second faster than his best times in both of his swims.
  • Benji Ovendale swam in the 200 Free Relay and shaved a few tenths of his best time with his swim!!!
  • Mudit Singh also swam in the 200 Free Relay and went a full second-and-a-half faster than his best time!!!
  • Dan Sun led off the Medley Relay and went right at his best time to start off the relay!!!
  • Max Sun anchored the Medley Relay and swam on the Free Relay. Both swims were 2 seconds faster then his best time!!!

  • Alex Wang swam on both relays over the weekend and was able to shave off a few tenths from his best time in his relay split!!!
  • Owen Wilson swam on both relays at the meet, had two solid swims, and was able to shave off a few tenths in his 50 Free split.
  • Kenshin Yokoyama swam on the Free Relay and was able to shave off almost a half second in his relay split from his best time!!!

Senior 1

The Senior Groups had eight swimmers compete at the 14&U Champs Meet. They did an absolutely incredible job of stepping up and setting a good example for everyone on the team. They were on point all weekend, getting in for warmups on time, being prepared for races, swimming fast, and having fun. We asked a lot of this group at the meet, and they did wonderfully rising to the occasion. It was a blast watching them all swim so well, crushing their best times then stepping up and racing hard in finals. These swimmers all trained so hard this season and it was such a special occasion to see it all pay off.

  • Oleg Arlouski stepped up big time and crushed swim after swim. He turned in tons of best times over the weekend. He has really been stepping up his butterfly training and that really showed in his racing. In the 200 Fly he had a great Prelims swim finishing 3rd and giving him a great lane for Finals. He threw down in finals holding onto 3rd, dropping from his prelims time, and breaking 2:00 in the event for the first time.
  • Adrian Juco came into the meet getting over being sick. He didn’t let that hold him back though as he was on his A game all weekend. A bit of a breaststroke specialist he stepped up and won the B final in the 100 Breast, going best times in both prelims and finals. He turned around and had a huge 3-second drop in the 200 Breast qualifying him for the A final and scoring big points for the team.
  • Cora Ledrick started off the meet with a nice drop in an off-event, the 100 Back. She has been training for the mid distance freestyle events and that training paid off in both the 200 and 500 Free. She posted her second fastest times ever in both races, making Finals in the 200, and finishing in scoring position in the 500.
  • Anton Mazepa was on fire all weekend as he turned in best times in all his races. He started off strong, dropping 2 seconds in the 100 Back and finishing 2nd in the B Final. His biggest swim of the meet was also his longest as he completely dominated the 1650 Free. He was able to find the pace early and dial it in, resulting in a 2-minute drop and 3rd place, just missing the Sectionals cut.
  • Ani Purkayastha trains incredibly well day in and day out. She has been patiently waiting for some big swims and she delivered. She went out and crushed all her best times, made Finals in her best events, and finally broke the 1:00 barrier in the 100 Free. She started it off dropping a second in the 100 Back in prelims. She followed that up by dropping another second and winning the B Final. She wasn’t done there as her 200 Back was even better. She dropped 4 seconds in prelims qualifying her for the A Final where she stepped up, dropping another half a second and finishing 5th.
  • Amaris Rus has been working on his butterfly training as well. He has had pretty good speed in the stroke all season and has now been working on his endurance. That really showed in his 200 Fly. He stepped up huge in the event moving up several spots from his seeding to get into Finals, dropping 4 seconds in the process.
  • Gabe Traina qualified for the meet just a week earlier at Divisionals. He didn’t let that stop him from crushing it at his second meet in a row. He had fantastic swims in his 100 Back, 50 Free, and 100 Free. He stepped up and raced super well in the 50 Free, blasting into Finals. Gabe also proved to be a valuable relay member helping our A relays to some Top 3 finishes.
  • Daniel Xia has really stepped up his training this season with goals of qualifying for some higher-level meets. He was on point all weekend as he made Finals in all his races and swam on all the relays for a total of 14 swims over the meet. He had a great 100 Breast, going under 1:00 for the first time although a bit of a rough start kept him in 3rd. He would be out for redemption in the 200 Breast, absolutely crushing it, winning the race and getting his Futures cut in the process.

Purple Group

Landon Yuan was our only swimmer, and he had a great meet. He started the meet off with a new best time in his 100 Back, then barely missed a new best time in the 100 Breast (by only 0.05!), just one week after qualifying at Divisionals. He finished the meet with an amazing 50 Free, dropping 2.6 seconds to break the :30 barrier for the first time and earn a BB time! Way to go, Landon!

White Group

This was a big meet for us, with EVERYONE landing EVERYTHING legally! What great representation for White for our four Champs!!

  • David Rondel, the youngest Wave-er to qualify in an individual event, did not disappoint! He cut another second off his 50 Fly time to land just 0.03 short of qualifying for finals. He also swam on two relay teams that both dropped time to earn 6th (26 points) and 8th (22 points)
  • Emma Lu hit the water swimming in the 10&U Girls C Medley Relay, logging a best time in her 50 Back and helping the girls drop 5 seconds and five places to finish 14th
  • Harper McDonnell helped out in the 10&U Girls B Medley Relay (landing 9th for 18 points) and in the B Free relay, which dropped 3 seconds to finish 9th, earning another 18 points for Wave. In the medley, she earned a best time in her 50 Back, dropping almost a second, as she did in Divisionals… and AGI.. and every time she tries!
  • Maks Nikitenko saved it all up for the 10&U Boys C Free Relay, and it was something to see! They were seated 15th, but they dropped almost 5 seconds, climbing three places in the rankings to land 11th. Wave’s 10&U boys are formidable if the C relay finished 11th!

Senior Prep

Sr. Prep swam outstanding at Champs with 108 successful individual swims of which 81 were best times, which is 75% of our races. We had another five swims that were at our best time to 0.5 off our best time. The average time drop for all swims was 5.18 seconds per race!

  • Kamila Bugaitsova had a fantastic champs meet. She improved in every event she swam and swam on four relays. Highlights include a 19+ second drop in the mile and a 12+ second improvement in the 400 IM. Her relay split of 28.2 was a full 1.7 seconds faster than her best 50 free time. She also split a 1:02.9 on a relay split that was 1.3 seconds faster than her best 100 Free time. Great job Kamilla!
  • Roman Byelykh improved in every race (nine including relays), and he swam a lot of backstroke. He dropped 7 seconds off his previous best in the 100 Back, was 6.79 seconds better in his 200 Back, and had almost a 2-second drop in the 50 Back! He also had solid improvements in his non-backstroke events with significant improvement in his 50 Fly and 50 Free. He also contributed to the 200 Free Relay. Nice work Roman!
  • Daniel Chen led off our 200 Medley Relay and got his personal best time of 29.88 to get under :30 in the 50 Back for the first time. Good job breaking that barrier Daniel!
  • Lola Cheng was another swimmer to improve in every event she swam. She swam all three breaststroke events and the 100 IM. She improved 2.5 seconds in the 200 Breast with a great kick into her glides, 2.7 seconds in the 100 Breast with great quickness and timing between her arms and legs, and 2.6 seconds in her 100 IM! She also swam on both medley relays. Fantastic Meet Lola!
  • Evan Deng swam 12 races counting relays, time trials, and finals swims! He improved in every event he swam compared to his times coming into the meet. Highlights include dropping 32.3 seconds in the 100 IM and 8.37 seconds in the 200 Breast! He made finals in the 50 and 200 Breast as well as swimming on three scoring relays. Excellent racing Evan!
  • Lena Duryee swam well at Champs, especially when she was swimming with her relays. She swam on four scoring relays and had some very fast splits! She also had a monster improvement in her 50 Free with a 0.7 second drop to go a 25.63! Great job Lena!
  • Claire Gao swam in 16 events over three days when counting her finals swims and relays! She improved in every event from her previous best times for her first two days of racing, but definitely was very tired on the third day. She still had one best time on the last day. She scored in every event she swam and finished Top 8 in four events! All four relays Claire swam for also scored. Outstanding swimming with a ton of races Claire!
  • Bennett Geitz likes the easy events like the 200 Fly, 400 IM, 500 Free, and the Mile! He swam so well with the longest and most difficult events on his plate. He made it back to the B Finals in his only event that was a prelim/final event (200 Fly). He ended up placing Top 16 in the mile, 400 IM, and 500 Free. He had some crazy improvements with a 33-second drop in the mile, an almost 15-second drop in the 400 IM, and he a 9.8-second drop in the 200 Fly. He also swam and scored on all four relays. All that hard work and attendance paid off big time Bennett! Great job!
  • Sophia Gorveatt also is all about easier events like the 100 & 200 Fly and the 500 & 1650 Free. She always has me a bit concerned with her pacing on the first part of her longer races. For example, her best time in the 50 Fly coming into the meet was a 29.17. She took the 200 Fly out in a 28.6 for her first 50, but then she held it together beautifully and kept her rhythm and tempo throughout the race to place 3rd in prelims and improved her time by 9 seconds! Similarly in her 500 she was out two seconds faster than her best 200 time on her way to an outstanding 11.5-second drop. She is unafraid of taking her races out fast and she has great endurance due to her excellent attendance and practice effort. She improved 23+ seconds in her mile after a big drop a month earlier. She also swam on three scoring relays. Awesome work Sophia!
  • Caden Gray qualified for Champs at Divisionals in two events. It's always a bit rough resting for a second meet in a row, but Caden swam outstanding with another 0.7 drop in his 50 Back to make it to finals. He also dropped a few tenths more in his 200 Back from his Divisional swim where he had a 4.34-second drop a week earlier. He swam super-fast on four scoring relays. Nice swimming Caden!
  • Kirsten Hau had a rough first day with a missed swim in her first event but recovered to have an excellent relay split that same day. A great lesson to learn that you can have adversity and still have a great next race. On day three, she was nervous when she arrived but did her best to be positive and get after her final race. She swam an outstanding 100 Fly and improved to a 1:07 from a 1:09. I love that she stuck with it, focused on the next race, and had a great swim! It is such an important lesson to learn. She helped our relays out tremendously. Great job Kirsten!
  • Nora Herman had possibly one of the most difficult order of events at the meet: 100 & 200 Fly, 400 IM, 200, 500, and 1650 Free plus four relays! Nora started off the meet well with a 9.5-second drop in the 200 Fly to make the A Final. The second day she swam lights out on the 200 Free B relay and was so close to her best time in the 500, with excellent pacing. She was very tired on the last day but was just 1 second off her best in the 100 Fly and 200 Free. She swam great on her relays. I am proud of how tough you were at this meet. Great swimming Nora!
  • Lauren Hizzey improved in every event she swam. Highlights include a 2.5-second drop in her 100 Back, a 1.6-second drop in her 200 Free, and a 1+ second drop in her 200 Back. She helped our 400 Free Relay score! She did a great job kicking and rotating in her races which is something we have been working on at practice. Great rotational swimming Lauren!
  • Yuzuki Ishizuka swam very well at PNS. She had an outstanding 400 IM even though she DQd. She had a solid drop in her 100 Back. Her biggest highlight was her 1-second drop in the 50 Fly. She swam fly on both medley relays and it’s clear she secretly wishes to swim more butterfly. I am very impressed with how much you have improved your butterfly Yuzuki, great job!
  • Dami Jung swam a lot of races with her finals swims, relays, and time trials: 13 total swims! Highlights were a 20-second drop in her 400 IM, a 7.5-second drop in her 200 Breast, and four more improvements in her other individual swims. She made finals in the 200 Breast and got even faster in finals. She also made finals in the 100 IM. She swam on four relays, including a huge relay split of 27.4 in the 200 Free Relay! What a great weekend of swimming Dami!
  • Kirill Kadach swam for us on our 200 Free Relay, and he swam outstanding with a relay split of 25.77 that is faster than his best time, and a huge help for the relay to score. Thank you K, great job!
  • Ethan Lin swam four individual races and four relays. He finaled in three of his races: the 50 Free, 100 Fly, and 100 Free as well as swimming on four relays! Highlights included a 1.65-second drop in the 100 Fly, splitting a 24.4 50 Fly on the Medley Relay and a 50.2 split on the 400 Medley relay. Both relay splits were huge drops. Good job Ethan!
  • Bryan Lin swam on three relays, the highlight being his 1:12.6 split on his 100 Fly in the 400 Medley, which was 2 seconds faster than his best time. His 50 Free splits in 200 Medley (28.6) and the 200 Free Relay (28.5) were also fantastic swims right at his best time. Great swims Bryan!
  • Kumail Mukadam swam back on our 400 Medley Relay and raced near his best time. Great job Kumail!
  • Amelia Pletosu is another one of my easy event swimmers: 200 Fly, 400 IM, 500 Free, 200 Free, and the 1650! She had huge drops in every event, the smallest being 4 seconds! She dropped almost 4 minutes in the 1650 to score 3rd, 32.7 seconds in the 400 IM, and 13+ seconds in the 200 Free. She also swam on the 400 Free Relay! She is also another amazing attendance swimmer who is one of the most mentally tough swimmers I have coached. Excellent pay off for all you do at practice and for how often you are there. Great swimming Amelia!
  • Vien Pogue swam very well at Champs, racing three different strokes but not the IM, which is a bit unusual, especially when you're great at fly, back, and breast. She dropped in all events except one on the last day that was right at her best time. The biggest highlight was the 200 Breast where she dropped more than 6 seconds. She dropped 2.2 seconds in both her 100 Back and 100 Breast just to make sure we cannot commit her to any single "best stroke". Nice job Vien!
  • Rachel Rose swam for our 200 Free Relay and split faster than her best time. Thank you, Rachel, great job!
  • Sanvi Shrivastava swam butterfly for both our 200 and 400 Medley Relays. She split very close to her best in both races. Thank you for swimming on those relays, Sanvi!
  • Maxim Smagley swam on four relays, three of which scored! In the 200 Medley, his 50 Fly split was 0.5 faster than his best time. His splits for the 100 Free in both the 400 Free and 400 Medley relays were almost 2 seconds faster than his best time! His best swim was his 50 Free split on the 200 free relay, which was almost a full second faster than his best time! Thank you for swimming on these relays Maxim!
  • Beata Sobol had a bit of a rough start on day 1 with goggles coming off early in the 400 IM. She recovered wonderfully and improved in every event after that. Highlights are a 2.83-second improvement in her 200 Free, a 2.31-second drop in her 500, and swimming on two relays. Great swimming Beata!
  • Maya Surugiu - I love how she approaches her practices and her races. She considers herself a breaststroke swimmer, but she is also one of the most mentally tough distance swimmers in Sr. Prep as well. She works hard, has amazing attendance, and it showed at the meet. The highlight was her 1650, where she dropped 55 seconds to score 4th. Her 400 IM was outstanding with a 13-second improvement but even better was the 200 and 100 Breast where she won the B Final for each. She dropped 1 second in the 100 and 9 seconds in the 200 as well as swimming on three scoring relays. Impressive improvements Maya!
  • Molly Traina had a full plate of events with 12 swims, dropping in 9 of them. Highlights include 1-second+ drops in her 100 Free, 100 Fly, and 100 Back as well as some monster splits on relays! Every relay split was faster than her best individual times. Amazing sprinting Molly, great job!
  • Lasya Viswanadham also had 12 swims and made it to Finals in the 50 and 200 Breast. The highlight of the meet was a 5-second drop in the 200 Breast in Finals to move up three places. She also dropped 0.5 in her 50 Breast and 0.3 in her 50 Free as well as swimming on four scoring relays. She really overcame some prelims adversity to really bang out a great swim where it counted…in Finals. Great swimming, Lasya!
  • Piper Wiegand joined the group this fall with no PNS cuts and ended up qualified in five events! WOW, that is amazing! Her best races were the 400 IM with a 4.9 second drop and in the 500 with a 4.7 second drop. She also dropped 2 seconds in her 200 IM, and led off both Free Relays where she got a best time in her 50 Free by a second, and in the 100 Free by 2.5 seconds! She was a bit tired for the last day but showed really impressive improvement in just a short time. Great job Piper!
  • Andy Yang qualified in all the breaststroke events and the two longer IM events. The biggest highlight is a toss up between the 400 IM with a 16-second improvement and the 8+ second improvement in the 200 Breast to get into Finals. He also made it to Finals in the 100 Breast where he had a 2-second drop. He had great swims and best times and was first alternate in the 50 Breast and 200 IM. He also swam on two relays. Excellent swimming Andy!

Top 16 Finishes

The Top 16 all scored points for Wave, except where we had three relays place in the Top 16 (teams can only score their top two relay teams). Relays score double points, so they were critical for Wave placing Top 5!!
