Wave Athletes Strike Gold at Age Group Regionals!

Northwest Age Group Regional Championships Meet Recap

Two weekends ago, Wave sent 74 athletes from nearly every workout group to the King County Aquatic Center for the biggest Age Group meet of the year. It was the first time since 2019 that the meet was held with full participation from our entire region, which includes seven states (Washington, Oregon, Alaska, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, and Wyoming). There were nearly 1200 swimmers and 80 teams competing!

Wave fought hard and swam fast to score in the Top 10. In the end, we narrowly beat Lake Oswego and Issaquah to win 8th place by just 4 points!

Huge shout outs to Landon Yuan for becoming the first-ever member of Purple Group to earn a AA time and to David Rondel, who became the first-evermember of White Group to earn an A time! Another huge shout to our swimmers who picked up their first-ever Senior Sectional cut: Kevin Flannery in the 200 Breast, Sophia Gorveatt in the 200 Fly, and Megan Traina in the 100 Back. Finally, a mighty shout out to Oleg Arlouski, who broke the team record for the 13-14 Boys in the 200 Fly and earned his first-ever AAAA time.

Congratulations to all of Wave for a fantastic Champs performance after months of hard work!

Age Group 2

  • Alex “Salsa” Arlouski broke his finger not long ago and has just been doing kick work for the past couple weeks. He came and raced his 50 Fly and just missed a best time despite not having swum for almost a month. Great grit, Alex!
  • Deniz “The Menace” Cankaya has worked hard to perfect his backstroke and he executed perfectly, nailing his breakouts and splitting his 50s just right to drop 3 seconds. In his 400 IM, he was dead last by 10 yards after the fly, but used excellent strategy in his other three strokes, negative splitting each to run down swimmer after swimmer to finish 3rd.
  • Henry “One-Pack” Cheng got off the wall fast in his 50 Back to drop .6. He has worked very hard on improving his flutter kick and it showed as he blasted to another best time. This improved kick showed up again in his 100 IM as he powered his way to a 2-second drop with not a single weak stroke in sight and an excellent suicide turn.
  • Rhea “Grande” Dawani swam right at her best times for most of the meet and led off one of our medley relays. Her biggest highlight came in her 100 Breast where she executed smokin’ fast turns and powerful underwater pullouts to break 1:30 for the first time and pick up a Top 16 finish.
  • Ellen “Toothless” Feng came in with big expectations and she surpassed those, starting the meet off with a 2.2-second drop in her 100 Back to go well under 1:10 for the first time and just missed her first 11-12 AA time. Later, she set the pool on fire, blazing her way to her first-ever :27 in the 50 Free, and a 1:05 in her 100 Fly (a 2-second drop). Her best race, however, was her 50 Fly where she kept her head down and swam a smoking 28.01 to win the Silver Medal and grab her first 11-12 AAA time.
  • Rihit “Peels” Gandhi wanted to make finals in the 200 Free, even though it was a long shot, and went out guns blazing trying the sprint the entire race. Even though he wasn’t able to maintain the pace, he still finished with an excellent time.
  • Olivia “Livy” Henaire started us off with a mammoth 500 Free, dropping 10 seconds with impeccable pacing. She was able to negative split the race and run down almost everyone in her heat. Her 200 Breast was even better, as she used her fast arms/long glides to win her heat going away, drop 8 seconds, and earn an A time. She capped off Day 3 with her best-ever 200 IM, using perfect splits and nailing almost all her turns to drop 5 seconds and earn an A time. Finally, on the final day, she won the bronze medal in the 50 Breast and 8th in the 200 Free (a perfectly paced race) to make finals.
  • Fiona “Mrs. Shrek” Herman raced her first 200 Fly as an 11-yr-old and dropped 4 seconds from her first-ever 200 Fly two weeks ago. She held her stroke together beautifully, running swimmers down left and right on the final 50.
  • Elise “Donkey” Kabakci also had a fantastic 500 Free on Thursday night, dropping 6 seconds as she paced her race perfectly, even pacing the two halves and descending each 100 by just the right amount. She also broke :30 for the first time in her 50 Free.
  • Arvin “Six-Pack” Kandiah has worked hard on correcting his breaststroke pull and it paid off with a huge 1-second drop in his 50 Breast. On his 100 IM, he showed off his vastly improved fly skills, swimming just off his best time.
  • Maria “FPU” Kokhan is now fully recovered from a shoulder injury a year ago and her hard work paid off huge with a 4-second drop in her 100 Back to earn her first 11-12 A time. Then she earned another best time in her 50 Back to land a spot in Finals, where she finished medaled. She also broke :30 in her 50 Free for the first time.
  • Yihan “YoYo” Li beat her entire heat off the blocks and used superior breakouts at both ends of her 50 Free to drop a full second and easily win her heat. She’s now about half-a-stroke from breaking the :30. Her 200 Back was an even better race, as she even paced her 100s beautifully and dropped 6.5 seconds.
  • Olivia “Livy Loo” Liu was rockin’ the joint all weekend! She churned out an incredible 200 Fly, dropping more than 11 seconds off her previous best. She paced her swim very well and had enough to sprint the final 50 and pass several swimmers to win her heat. She followed that up with a gorgeous 100 Breast, dropping 3 seconds by using all-star underwater pullouts, dropped 4 seconds in her 50 Breast, and broke the :30 in the 50 Free for the first time.
  • Eleanor “Flipper” Lopez swam a perfectly paced 200 Fly, dropping her time from just two weeks ago, and breaking 3:00 for the first time to earn a B time. She raced her 100 Fly with even more precision, dropping more than 3 seconds, and broke the 1:20 in her 100 IM with a beautiful breaststroke leg (her #4 stroke).
  • Max “Maximillion” Malinovskyi swam the 100 Back of his life, starting off fast and finishing faster to earn the Regional cut. His splits were good and his breakouts were even better. He topped that with his 200 Back where his near-perfect pacing resulted in a massive 10-second drop.
  • Andy “Goober” Nguyen used a stunning start and beautiful breakouts to thrash his previous best 100 Breast time, dropping 3 seconds and earning his first AA time. He replicated his efforts the next day in his 200 Breast to drop 4 seconds and just miss the AA time. He ended the meet with a blazing 50 Breast, dropping 0.6 to earn his first :33.
  • Irene “IQ” Qu took advantage of having the best breakouts in her heat to break the 1:20 barrier in the 100 Breast and win her heat. On day 2, she destroyed her 50 Back time with perfect breakouts at both ends to earn her first-ever AA time.
  • Han “Solo” Sun waited several hours to race his 200 IM, but when he did, it was a thing of beauty. Every breakout was perfect, as was his pacing for each stroke, giving him a big 3-second drop. He finished the meet with possibly his best swim in the 100 IM, overcoming a weak fly leg with incredible technique and grit on the last three legs to drop almost 3 more seconds.
  • Isshin “Groot” Yokoyama had very little rest before his 100 Free, but he altered his strategy a bit and it paid off big time, as he dropped another second and is now within shouting distance of breaking the 1:00 barrier.
  • Ally “Eyes” Yuan destroyed her 100 Back best time, using amazing breakouts to blast 3 seconds to place Top 16 and earn another AA time. She followed that by leading off the medley relay with a new best time for her 50 Back, only to shatter that time in her individual race. In her 200 Free, she went out aggressively and held on no matter how tired she got to break 2:30 for the first time.
  • Andrew “Zoo Man” Zhu cranked up the heat on his 50 Free, easily destroying his previous best and dropping 1 second. For his 100 IM, he pushed his back half to swim just off his best time.

Age Group 1

  • Adele Bokach put her fast arms to work in the 100 Breast, shattering her previous best by 4 seconds, then just missed her first AA time in the 50 Fly with an amazing turn and outstanding breakouts. Her 100 Free was just as good as she went out fast and held on to cut 5 seconds off her best, as was her 100 Fly where she dropped another second.
  • Norah Braun started off a little slow in her 50 Back but cranked up her arms and strong kick to slash 4 seconds off her best. Later, she executed a near-perfect 200 IM to blast apart her previous best by almost 7 seconds.
  • Addy Clarke used her excellent breakout skill to not only break 1:10 for the first time in the 100 Free but shattered it with a 1:07.
  • Berit Dunn paced her 100 Breast extremely well and took advantage of her excellent glides to drop 2 seconds and medaled with a 6th place finish. Her 50 Breast was just as good, as she drove hard with her glides to drop 1.4 seconds and finished with her second medal of the weekend, this time grabbing 4th.
  • Elaina Jiang swam a beautiful 200 IM with excellent turns and breakouts to cut more than 8 seconds off her previous best. She also went out fast in her 100 Fly, only breathing twice on the first length, on her way to blasting 20.3 seconds off her best time.
  • Lingyi Li went out very fast in her 100 Free and swam near-perfect splits to just miss breaking the 1:10 for the first time, then nailed an excellent 50 Breast with an aggressive first 25 to drop almost 1 second. In her 200 Free, she pushed her first 100 fast and held on to chop off a huge 5 seconds.
  • Rinat Maksyutov started things off with a bang for AG1 with a spectacular 100 Back, dropping 3 seconds with outstanding dolphin kicks off every wall. Then he jumped in for his 50 Back, nailed his breakouts, and raced his way to his first AA time and an 8th place medal. With little rest, he dove in a few minutes later to drop 3 seconds off his 100 Free. On the last day, he pushed hard in the 200 Free, descending nicely on his back half to slash 7 seconds off his best time.
  • Albert O used excellent underwater pullouts on his 100 Breast to crush his heat beneath his heels, winning easily with an excellent 2-second drop. On his 50 Back, he overcame a slow first half with blistering second 25 to drop almost 2 seconds and earn a BB time. Then to show he’s not just a one-stroke-wonder, he beautifully paced his 100 Free, dropping more than 4 seconds.
  • Alex Wang raced right next to Rinat in the 50 Back and used the draft to go with speedy arms to also earn his first AA time. In the 200 Free, he showed astonishing grit as he raced past other swimmers in the final 50 to drop a whopping 24 seconds.
  • Owen Wilson used a very nice start and excellent body position—especially on his breaths—to destroy his previous best in the 50 Fly by almost 7 seconds, earning both a B and BB time, and just missing an A time. His 100 Fly was a thing of beauty, especially on the second 50 that is so tough for young swimmers to maintain their stroke, and improved by more than 1 second.
  • Kenshin Yokoyama started his 100 Breast off a bit slow but cranked it up on the second 50 to run down opponents and slash 7 seconds off his previous best time. The next day, he used excellent pacing to drop another second off his 100 Free time.

White Group

  • David Rondel was White’s lone representative. After swimming a very speedy fly leg in the medley relay, he came right back to race the 50 Fly and drop another half second to pick up his first-ever A time. On the last day, he brought his all to the 100 Fly, executed great race strategy (especially for a 10&Under!) and dropped 2 more seconds. He ended the meet with a fabulous 100 IM, racing his opponents well and knocking off another 2 seconds.

Senior 1

Senior 1 had 11 swimmers compete at Age Group Regionals. It was a weekend full of tons of fast swimming. It was an absolute blast to watch the swimmers in the group step up and race so well. Everyone who competed at the meet turned in some great swims. We had lots of finals appearances, some huge time drops, several top 5 finishes, a victory, and a Senior Sectionals qualifier. This group has worked incredibly hard this season, I had a wonderful time watching them race so well and seeing the rewards from their work. Looking forward to what this group can do in the Long Course season.

  • Quinn Anderson was ready to fly and be free at the meet, working exceptionally hard at his fly and free speed heading into the meet. He started off with a strong swim in the 200 Fly, dropping time and qualifying for finals. He continued to show his speed in the 100 Free where he dropped some time and put himself even closer to his first :49.
  • Bianca Benson had her game face on all weekend as she turned in solid swim after solid swim. We worked very hard at her backstroke pacing leading up to the meet. She was an absolute ace in the 200 Back as she swam the race exactly the way we had planned, hitting her pace on all four 50s and turning in a solid time drop.
  • Kevin Flannery wins the award for swimmer of the meet for Senior 1. He entered the meet as the top seed in the 200 Breast and we worked on pace all week. He came into the meet planning to win the event and qualify for Sectionals. In Prelims, he had a fine swim, dropping a little bit of time and finishing 3rd. Then came Finals where he turned in the swim of his life leading from start to finish pulling away a little bit more each 50 and qualifying for Sectionals. Mission accomplished.
  • Adrian Juco competed for the second weekend in a row. He didn’t let exhaustion take over as he turned in swims that were right on his best times and blasted out a drop in one of his bonus events. He was right on his time in both breaststroke races and is eager to get back to training so he can drop in those. He had swam the same time in the 200 IM about five times in a row, but that is now a thing of the past as he took the race out strong then finished like a champion resulting in a new best time.
  • Cora Ledrick has shifted her training to focus on some longer races and that training is starting to really pay off. She started the meet out with a super strong 500 going right at her pace the entire race for a drop. Her 200 Free was also very strong as she kept her speed in the third 50 and finished hard right at her best time. She decided to shake things up a bit for her bonus event and landed on the 100 Back. She had strong underwaters and good tempo all the way to a best time.
  • Anton Mazepa was also competing for the second weekend in a row. He rose to the challenge with flying colors. His bread-and-butter events are the backstroke races and he had awesome swims in both going under :56 for the first time in his 100 and getting so close to breaking the 2:00 barrier in the 200. While his backstroke events were solid, his best race was the 400 IM. He took out the race super-fast crushing the first two legs then finished strong resulting in a 9 second drop and putting him close to the Sectionals cut in the event.
  • Megan Nilsen used this as a wrap up meet as she will be taking a break for track. She had a strong 50 Free going right at her best time. She was a valuable member of relays racing super hard to the finish helping our 200 Free Relay score points and finish 4th.
  • Kieran O’Gorman is one of our top backstrokers and used his amazing underwater dolphin kicks to blast his way to new best times in both the 100 and 200. In finals of the 200, he swam an incredibly gutsy race taking out fast then holding on well in the back 50s. His efforts resulted in him moving up a spot to finish 4th and obtain a new best time, just missing breaking 2:00 for the first time.
  • Ani Purkayastha jumped on the ship of excellent backstroke events over the weekend. She had a stellar 100 using her strong opening speed and excellent underwater dolphin kicks to drop time in both prelims and finals, in finals she swam a super strong race moving up two places to finish 4th. She had an awesome prelims swim in the 200 Back, dropping a second and getting herself a second swim. She raced hard in finals and moved up a spot to finish 7th.
  • Amaris Rus started the meet off with a blast going a strong best time in the 200 Fly And qualifying for finals. He went on to swim an exciting race in finals moving up a spot from his prelims finish. He was right on his best times in the 100 Fly and the 200 IM as well. He’s not typically a freestyle sprinter, but he stepped up big time on the relays crushing his previous bests in both the 50 and 100 Free.
  • Josh Rus was the final member of the backstroke gang over the weekend. He thrives in the mid-distance and distance events and the 200 Back proved to be no exception. He got off to a great start then dialed it in, hitting his pace the final three 50s giving him a solid 3-second drop. He was all smiles after the event and is excited to do some more backstroke training to get even stronger.

High School Group

  • Thomas Claux competed on both the 400 Free and Medley Relays. He stepped up and raced very hard going right at his best time as the anchor freestyle leg of both relays. His tenacity and great racing helped his teams score.

Senior Epic

Senior Epic had another fantastic week wrapping up our short course season with fast swims at Age Group Regionals! All Epic swimmers who competed at AGR got best times in one or more events and performed great races throughout the weekend. Enjoy some highlights from our group:

  • Megan Traina qualified for her first Spring Sectionals swimming an amazing 100 Back in prelims and breaking the 1:00 barrier for the first time (59:36). She came back for finals seeded first and confirmed her place winning the race and swimming under the 1:00 again. She also went a best time in the 200 Back, dropping almost a second. She has been working consistently on her underwater dolphin kicks and her work paid off at Regionals.
  • Caroline Bryant was feeling strong and went a lifetime best in both 50 & 100 Free. She earned her spot in finals in both events finishing in 6th and 8th places respectively. She got even closer to the Sectionals cut in the 50 Free, missing it by only 0.11 and will continue to work hard to achieve her goal.
  • Oleg Arlouski was still recovering his strength after being very sick for 10 days and not swimming at Sectionals, but managed to swim an excellent Champs meet, going best times and qualifying for finals in his main events. In the 200 Fly, he broke the Team Record (Boys 13-14), got his first AAAA Time. and finished 4th. In the 100 Fly, he dropped a full second and placed 6th at Finals.
  • Anouk Balog had a food poisoning setback a week before the meet, but she was able to recover in time and swim a strong meet. She went personal best in the 1650 Free with a great 8-second drop and also swam a personal best in the 200 Fly where she qualified for finals and finished 6th. She demonstrated a solid improvement on her turns and push-offs.
  • Samantha Merriam had an excellent meet and went best times in all four races. Her outstanding swims were the 100 Free where she dropped a solid 1.21 seconds and the 200 IM where she earned an A Time dropping almost 3 seconds and finishing the race with a strong freestyle split. She also broke the :26 barrier in the 50 Free for the first time.
  • Iris Huang had a great weekend and went 3-of-4 lifetime bests. She dropped time in the 50 & 100 Free and 100 Fly demonstrating strong and fast underwater dolphin kicks in all her events. She was also happily surprised with her 100 Breast where she swam right at her time even though she hadn't been focusing on that stroke.
  • Rik Brusilovski swam three events at Regionals and swam a best time in the 100 Breast where he dropped 0.70.

Purple Group

  • Landon Yuan swam three best times out of four and swam outstanding. He dropped more than 10 seconds in his 200 Breast, 5 seconds in his 100 breast, and 1.6 seconds in his 50 Breast. His breaststroke technique looked very improved from earlier in the year. His 50 Breast time is a AA motivational time! Amazing improvements, Landon!

Senior Prep

Sr. Prep had a great meet at Age Group Regionals. We had 116 successful swims with an average improvement of 0.81 per swim, which includes swims were time was added. I also wanted to give a shout out to our six individual finalists, Claire Gao, Sophia Gorveatt, Amelia Pletosu, Molly Traina, Piper Wiegard, and Daniel Chen. It is extremely difficult to make it into the Top 8 for the entire region, impressive!

  • Kamilla Bugaitsova has an absolutely amazing mile swim with a 27.36-second improvement. She also had an excellent 50 Fly and 100 Free with some solid improvements as well. Nice Swimming Kamilla!
  • Daniel Chen improved significantly in all his races. Highlights were a 5-second drop in his 400 IM for 8th place as well as a 3+ second improvement in his 200 Breast. Excellent effort Daniel
  • Lena Duryee had a solid 1.5-second improvement in her 200 IM as well as a 0.3 drop in her 100 Back. All her other swims were right off her best times. She is a monster relay swimmer and racer her heart out helping many of our 13-14 girls relays. Her sprinting is so impressive and she really gets pumped up before her relays! Great job Lena!
  • Claire Gao had a solid meet though I know she wanted more. She finaled in five of her six swims with the highlight earning 2nd in the 100 Free, and 4th in her 100 Fly and 100 IM. She got a best time in her 100 IM and was just off her best times in her other events. She also had crucial, fast swims on three relays for the 11-12 girls. I love how you race Claire!
  • Bennett Geitz had a challenging slate of events with the 200 Breast, 400 IM, 500 Free, 200 Fly, 200 Free, and the mile! He had four significant improvements in his 200 Free (-1.6), 500 Free (-2.5), 200 Breast (-2.3), and 50 Free (-.22). His other times were just off his best and are his second-best times ever after huge drops in those events at PNS champs. Great effort Bennett!
  • Sophia Gorveatt joins Ethan Lin as Senior Prep’s first-ever Sr. Sectional qualifiers, dropping 1.7 seconds in her 200 Fly to get the cut and place 2nd. She also improved in her 500 Free and 100 Fly with solid improvements for 4th in each. She had amazing swims on every day of the meet including some fast relay swims. The last day, the number of races—most of them very challenging—caught up to her and she was super tired but she still swam to 6th in her mile despite this. Beautiful swimming Sophia!
  • Caden Grey improved in every event he swam! Highlights were a huge 6-second improvement in his 200 Back and a full second drop in his 100 Back. He helped us with his excellent relay swims as well. I love how your backstroke is looking, Caden!
  • Nora Herman turned 13 the day before the meet started, and still qualified in five events. She had a gigantic 13-second drop in her 500 Free and another 2.7 seconds in her 100 Fly. Great swimming Nora!
  • Yuzuki Ishizuka improved in every event she swam! Highlights were dropping 2 more seconds in the 200 Fly, 1.2 in her 50 Breast, and 0.75 in her 50 Back. Excellent job Yuzuki!
  • Dami Jung had a full slate of six events plus relays, and she swam so well, including five best times. Highlights were a 4.5-second improvement in her 400 IM, a 1.7-second improvement and a AA time in her 200 Breast, and a 1-second improvement and another AA time in her 50 Breast! Nice swimming Dami!
  • Bryan Lin improved in three of his four events with a 2.3-second improvement in his 100 Fly, a 0.8 improvement in his 100 Free, and a 0.61 improvement in his 50 Fly. He was right at his best time in the 50 Free. He also helped us out on our 11-12 relays at the meet. Excellent racing Bryan!
  • Amelia Pletosu was another swimmer signing up for the most difficult events. She had five best times out of six events and placed 3rd in the mile! Other highlights included 7-second drops in her mile and 500 swims and a 3.7-second improvement in her 200 Fly. Amazing order of events and amazing swims Amelia!
  • Vien Pogue qualified in the most interesting order of events ever: 100 Fly, 100 Breast, and 100 Back. She was a bit off for some of her swims and was a bit challenged mentally by that, and then had a great improvement in her 100 Breast with a great 1.5-second improvement. Way to stick with it and stay focused Vien!
  • Maxim Smagley qualified in the 50 and 100 Free and the 50 and 100 Fly. Wow has his fly improved from the start of the year! He has always been strong but has improved his technique and is now pulling a lot more water. He dropped in three of his four events with a huge 2.3-second drop in his 100 Free to go under 1:00 for the first time with a 58.64! His 26.76 in the 50 Free was also very impressive with a 0.67 improvement. I am glad you are pulling so much water now Maxim!
  • Beata Sobol had four swims and dropped in each. The highlight was her 4-second drop in her 100 Fly as well as a solid 1.3-second improvement in her 50 Breast. She also swam the 50 and 200 Fly events for good improvements there too. Awesome job Beata!
  • Maya Surugiu had some gigantic improvements at PNS Champs, and she was right at her times from December in just about all her events. The one exception was the 500 Free where she dropped another 4.5 seconds off her earlier drop in December. She also helped huge with some great relay swims. Maya, I know you wanted more, but all those times you swam were second best ever swims and right at times that you were excited about in December. I know you have some more big improvements to come, great focus at the meet! I love the passion and energy you bring to the team!
  • Molly Traina had four relay swims and six individual events with many finals swims as well. She has been dealing with some injuries and swam exceptional considering how limited she has been from a training perspective. The biggest highlights were her 2nd place finishes in the 100 and 200 Back events as well as her 2.2 second improvement in the 200 Back. Gritty performances Molly!
  • Lasya Viswanadham improved in three of her four events! She had a great 2-second drop in her 200 Fly and a 1-second drop in her 100 Fly as well as helping Wave out with some relay swims. I love how much smoother your fly is compared to the beginning of the year Lasya!
  • Piper Wiegard has been away from practice for a number of trips the last month or two, and that made for a big challenge to drop in her events. She still had three big improvements as well as a lot of swims right at her best times. Highlights are the mile where she placed 7th and dropped 28 seconds and the 200 Fly where she dropped another 2.6 seconds off her best. Way to stay in shape while on the road Piper!
  • Andy Yang qualified for Regionals in five events: the three breaststroke events and the only other events that have breaststroke, the IMs. He got a best time in the 100 Breast and helped Wave out with a great relay breaststroke leg. He was just off his best times in a number of his events and did a great job racing. Regionals was a great learning experience and I love how determined he is after every race. Thank you for all your hard work and determination Andy!
