Wave 11&O Short Course Finale Meet Recap

Last weekend, we finished off the 2023-24 Short Course Season with fabulous performances from nearly every group as our older swimmers dominated the meet, with many of them coming back for Finals on Saturday and Sunday, and many swimmers trying longer races for the first time. Our last--and very huge--shout out of the season goes to Coach Aili, as she led Purple Group for the final time. Best wishes and congratulations as Juanita’s new pool manager, Coach Aili!

She followed that up by shattering the :30 in her 50 Free and cutting nearly 3 seconds off in her 100 Back, earning wins in both, and a 2-second drop in her 50 Fly for 2nd. On the last day she completely dominated, winning all three events and dropping big time in each. She was Wave's top athlete at the meet, winning six races and finishing 2nd in her other event.
  • Lucy “Goose” Broyles destroyed her previous best in her 100 Back by 4 seconds with a greatly improved tempo to pick up 3rd to go along with 4th in her 100 Breast. On Sunday, she smoked her previous 50 Back time by 1.5 seconds to pick up 2nd.

  • Elizabeth “Liza” Luo started off with a fabulous 400 IM, dropping 9 seconds to finish 4th then repeated her heroics in the 200 IM, dropping nearly 3 seconds in Finals to earn 3rd and another 4 seconds in her 50 Fly to easily win the B Final.
  • Melissa “Little Miss Missy” Nguyen began her weekend with a flawless 50 Free, nailing everything from her breakouts to her finish to drop more than a second. She finaled in five races, topped by her 200 Breast where she dropped 3 seconds in Prelims, then another 1.7 seconds in Finals to score in the A Final.
  • Leo “Mufasa” Steijn had a huge swim in the 100 Back, turning his arms over faster than ever to drop 1.6 second and win the B Final on his final stroke. He dropped 0.66 in his 100 Breast to earn 2nd as the youngest 11-yr-old boy in the meet and broke :40 in the 50 Fly for the first time. On Sunday, He swam his first-ever 200 Breast, easily picking up 3rd, and his first-ever 200 Back where he placed 4th. Between those two longer races, he sprinted his way to an impressive 2nd in the 50 Breast.
  • Nika “Gamora” Svirydovich had AG2’s biggest single improvement with a massive 60-second drop in her 500 Free, made the A Final easily in her 100 Breast finishing 5th, and dropped 6 seconds in her 100 Back, scoring 8th. Sunday was even more impressive as she picked up her first 11-12 BB time in the 50 Breast, crushing her old time, and finishing 2nd. She also dropped 3 seconds in her 200 Breast for 6th and 2.3 seconds in her 200 Back for 4th.
  • George “Gorgeous” Urselenko worked hard the past few months to correct little details in each of his strokes and they really showed in the meet, beginning with an astonishing 500 Free, blasting off 28 seconds and scoring 3rd. He absolutely smashed his 100 Back using a beautiful body rotation added by a strong flutter to drop 3 seconds and place 5th. In his 100 Breast, he overcame a so-so prelims swim, dropped 3 seconds, and moved up two places for 4th. He continued his outstanding backstroke improvements with a 2-second drop in his 50 to score 6th.
  • Arjun “Little A” Yadav had a fantastic meet, going 7/7 best times and scoring Top 6 in every race. He led off with a massive 35-second drop in the 500 Free, crushing the 7:00 mark with beautiful pacing to pick up 2nd. In the 50 Free, he just missed breaking the :30 to score 3rd, dropped 4+ seconds in the 200 IM for 2nd, and 6 seconds in his 200 Free for another 3rd. On Sunday, his drops weren’t quite as big, but he still had three excellent swims.
  • Grace “Gracie” Zhang turned in one of the most impressive Finals swims for the entire team with her 100 Breast, where she slashed 5 seconds off her Prelims time to race past swimmers for 2nd, then repeated her performance in the 200 Free, dropping 16 seconds and moved up two places from Prelims to earn 3rd. On Sunday, she finished Top 6 in all three races, including 2nd in the 200 Breast.
  • Serena “Sushi Girl” Zhang got off to a great start in her 400 IM, slashing almost 19 seconds off to pick up 3rd. Sunday started off with a bang as she slashed 7 seconds off her 100 Fly for 6th and made B Final in her 100 IM and 100 Free.

Senior 1

The Senior 1 group had 15 swimmers compete at the meet, and everyone stepped up and raced incredibly well. We had tons of best times, everyone qualified for at least one Finals swim, and several first place finishes. It was a super fun weekend watching the swimmers throw down in Prelims then turn around and come back for Finals racing even harder and dropping again. This group put in very serious training this season and it was such a wonderful experience to see them all crush it to end their season. I am looking forward to what the group can do this coming season.

  • Bradley Barkans had an absolutely stellar meet. He was only able to compete two days but made the most out of his swims, winning all four of his events and going best times in several. His wildest swim was the 100 Back where he has been stuck at 1:00 for quite a while, in finals he absolutely smashed it skipping :59 completely and dropping to a :58.
  • Tanvi Bathe had a bit of a training set back earlier in the year but has done a wonderful job of coming back strong and making the most out of each opportunity. She put her game face on and got down to business busting out three best times. Her biggest swim was the 50 Free where she dropped almost a full second in Prelims then turned around and went right at that same time for Finals producing her two fastest swims in the event ever.
  • Tanay Boda took the opportunity to work on racing hard and swimming well. He turned in several strong swims that were right on his best time and qualified for finals in all but one of his races. He had a great showing in the 50 Breast, dropping time to qualify for Finals, then stepping up and turning in an even faster time in the evening.
  • Ananiah Gashaw had a very solid showing at the meet. Her fly was absolutely on point all weekend as she posted great swims in all three fly events. She started it off with a huge swim in the 200 Fly, looking strong and composed all the way to a 9-second drop. In a tough double, she swam it again in Finals going just 2 seconds off her Prelims time and finishing 2nd overall.
  • Nethaniah Gashaw was the second butterfly master of the meet. She also tackled the 200 Fly, turning in a super strong prelims swim holding her breathing pattern the whole way and keeping her stroke strong and efficient down the stretch. Also tackling the double 200 in finals, she was a little tired but stayed tough all the way through winning the event.
  • Abby Gong has been training hard all season and has been patiently waiting for her racing to reflect her practices. This meet she accomplished just that. She turned in best times in all her races and qualified for several finals. She started off strong, breaking the 6:00 barrier in the 500, then capped off the weekend with an amazing 200 Back, dropping 22 seconds in Prelims then another 2 more in Finals.
  • Penelope Hepkin has been working hard on her breast and distance freestyle training. She was strong in her freestyle races but her breaststroke work really shined through. She started off with a somewhat middle-of-the-road 100 in prelims but made it into Finals where she went to work. In finals she put everything into her swim resulting in a lifetime best and a 1st place finish. In the 200, she had a very exciting race with a teammate going stroke-for-stroke all the way to the finish and a huge 3-second drop.
  • Aditi Kandiah performed swimmingly in all her races. She was solid throughout the entire meet, making Finals in most of her races and seeing several time drops. She swam an off race in the 100 Breast and surprised herself by dropping 2 seconds and qualifying for Finals. Her best race came in the 100 Fly where, after a fine Prelims swim, she stepped up big time and brought everything she had in Finals achieving a new best time and breaking 1:10 for the first time.
  • Kyle Li was only able to compete one day of the meet but made the most out of his swims. He qualified for finals in all his races. He was right on his best time in the 50 Free in Prelims then turned around and blasted a new best time in Finals.
  • Joseph Nguyen put everything he had into his swims qualifying for Finals in all his races and achieving a couple new best times. He had a strong 100 Fly in Prelims going right at his best time. He was excited to get a second shot at the race and in Finals cooked up a best time to go along with his 1st place finish.
  • Sonny Nguyen showed off his sprint speed racing in mostly short events. He was right at his best time in the 50 Free in both Prelims and Finals looking strong both swims. He turned in a sweet 50 Fly just missing a best time in Prelims due to a missed wall. In finals, he cleaned up the turn, resulting in a lifetime best.
  • Neha Phatak stepped up and raced super well in all her events. She started the meet off with a solid swim in the 500 Free finishing strong to give herself a best time. Her best race of the meet was the 100 Fly. She has been putting in the work on fly sets in practice and it really showed, she looked super smooth and strong in prelims then was able to put some more speed into it in finals going a best time and getting super close to breaking that 1:10 barrier.
  • Rahul Purkayastha started the season with huge swims and finished the season with huge swims. He was dialed in all weekend, going right at or better than his best times in all his races. His most exciting swim would be his final race of the meet. He put up a strong swim in Prelims of the 50 back, then in Finals he put everything he had into it, dropping a full second and putting him super close to breaking the :30 mark.
  • Neil Rawal is another member of the Senior 1 breaststroke squad, showing awesome speed in all three events. He showed that great speed to drop time and win the 50. He would continue the streak and used his speed to produce the same results in the 100. He has struggled in the 200 in the past but that would not be his fate at this meet. He swam a super controlled race splitting well resulting in a 3-second drop.
  • Bella Vasilescu had a breakout meet. She started it off super strong and never looked back, turning in best time after best time. Her first race, the 500, came down to an exciting finish as she was able to turn on the jets in the last 50, chasing down a teammate and breaking 6:00 for the first time. She would just keep the ball rolling from there turning in huge swims in all her events finishing with best times in each and every one.

Senior Prep

  • Gahl Ami ad had a very strong weekend of swimming. He started the meet off with a bang dropping 14 seconds in the 400 IM. He kept the good vibes coming as he would qualify for finals and go right at or best times in all his remaining events. A great way to finish off his time in Sr Prep.
  • Arya Bhatt was on fire all weekend as he turned in best times in the majority of his races. He had some huge swims in the butterfly events dropping time in both the 100 and 200. He finished the meet with four new best times and three Finals appearances.
  • Kirsten Hau turned in several best times and a few wild swims. She started off strong, smashing her best time in the 400 IM by 10 seconds. Her most exciting race was her 200 Breast. She was in a dead heat race with a teammate from the get go, but on the last 50 she separated herself to finish first and drop 2 seconds.
  • Kirill Kadach was a man on a mission, a mission to crush old times. He looked super strong in all his races all weekend, putting up four best times. He swam a very clean 100 Fly in Finals that gave him a best time and moved him up three places from his Prelims finish.
  • Ella Tulanon started the meet off on the right foot turning in a huge 7-second drop in the 500. She just kept rolling from there turning in best times in all her events. Not to be considered a distance swimmer only, she showed off her speed in the 100 Free, barely missing breaking 1:00 and moving up two spots to win the B Final.
  • Arjun Bhate has been training hard and it showed in his first race, his first-ever 400 IM, where he scored 2nd place with an excellent swim. He had several other excellent swims and qualified for Finals in all his events, with the other big standout being his 200 Free where he dropped 7+ seconds overall.
  • Lainey Meyer had a breakout meet, swimming all 13 possible races (dropping time in 11), and winning the 200 IM. She also earned BB times in 6 out of her 7 events. One of her best races was her 100 Fly, where in Prelims she dropped 5.4 seconds from her entry time, then came back in Finals to drop another second and raced an incredible final 25 to move up a place and grab 2nd.
  • Rachael Rose absolutely dominated the breaststroke races, winning all three distances in convincing fashion. Proving that she’s no one-stroke wonder, she also crushed to 50 Fly for another first place and dropped 30 seconds in her 500 Free for a new BB time and 2nd place.
  • Sanvi Shrivastava had one of the best meets of her life, racing 13 times and making the A Final in five races. She easily won the 100 Fly by dropping 5 seconds from her Prelims time, leaving her closest opponent at the flags when she hit the wall. Her biggest drop, however, was her 500 Free, where she crushed her previous best by a staggering 55 seconds.

White Group

We had eight swimmers who went to the champs meet and seven who came back to swim in finals! Lots of these swimmers swam 200s for the first time and did an amazing job utilizing the strategy we went over during practice.

  • Emma Lu only came on Sunday but swam so fast she came back to Finals in all three events! She dropped 2 seconds in both her 50 Back and 50 Breast and then drop even more in her 50 Back in Finals! She also swam the 200 Back for the first time. Not only did she come back for Finals, she made the A Final and somehow dropped an extra 20 seconds from her Prelim time to get 5th place!
  • Piper Meier swam the 200 Back and 200 Free for the first time and made Finals in both. In her 200 Back she dropped another 9 seconds in Finals to get under the 3:40 barrier! She also was able to drop 1.5 seconds in her 50 Back!
  • Aanya Sharan also swam both the 200 Back and 200 Free twice for the first time. Not only did she drop time in Finals for both races, but collectively she dropped 19 seconds, 18 of which were in her 200 Back. Swimming 200s back-to-back is sometimes so difficult to drop any time that even 1 second is impressive. She also dropped an additional second in her 50 Breast!
  • Bryan Wei showed up and proved that not only is he a backstroker, but also a butterflier. He swam all three backstroke events dropping almost 12 seconds in his 100, almost 2 seconds in his 50, and got a first time in his 200 where he is only 0.11 away from breaking the 3:45 mark. He came back for Finals on Saturday in his 50 Fly where he dropped a second in Prelims and another second in Finals!
  • Jared Wen showed up unexpectedly both days since we were told he might not make it at all and crushed it at this meet. He may have not made Finals, but he dropped major time in all his events! Collectively he dropped almost 15.5 seconds, with his biggest time drops coming in his 50 Back and 50 Free, dropping almost 5 seconds in each!
  • Olivia Wu showed major improvement at this meet. She not only dropped time in all her events but she also swam the 200 Free and 200 Back for the first time. She even made Finals in the 200 Free and dropped a whopping 28 seconds from her Prelims time to crush the 3:25 barrier. She must be onto something cause this is the second time she dropped big time after swimming a 200 in Prelims and coming back for Finals. Including the 200 Back she dropped almost 34 seconds total at the meet!
  • Alex Yang did an amazing job at this meet! Even though he was a new swimmer to Wave at the start of the short course season, he immediately showed tremendous potential and has been dropping major time in all his events since last fall. His 100 Breast proved this as he dropped a crushing 16.38 seconds! Even though he got sick on Saturday, he powered through, swam his first 200 Free even though I told him he could take it easy. He still managed to break the 3:30 barrier. On Sunday, he came back feeling better than ever and made finals in the 50 and 200 Back! In his four other events he dropped a big huge whopping 37.8 seconds total!
  • Eric Zhou was also new to Wave at the start of the short course season and showed so much promise that he went straight into to A group. He came back for Finals in both days: his 50 Back Sunday and his 200 Free Saturday. He dropped time in almost every single event except his 50 Back, but that didn’t stop him from making Finals, and he improved his Prelim time in both races. In his 200 Free, he dropped an additional 5 seconds from his previous time just two weeks ago! Now he is only 5 seconds away from breaking the 3:00 barrier. Totaling all his time drops he dropped more than 12 seconds!

Purple Group

  • Dmitry Leonov-Vendrovskiy had an outstanding first meet with Wave, making Finals in all his events and placing 1st in his 100 IM. Being one of Purple’s newest swimmers, he’s shown extreme determination and willingness to learn, which was amazing to see not just in practice but in his racing as well!
  • Serena Tang showed great grit during her 200 Breast where she paced more experienced teammates and was able to shatter her previous time, coming back for Finals to do the same thing again! She is also a great athlete at practice, representing the Wave Way in many areas.
  • Joseph Foster is great at bringing a smile and laugh to everyone around him, and at this meet he did just that while doing excellent in his events. He did have a setback during Finals where he took accountability for his mistakes and used it as a learning opportunity for future meets. Great performance and recovery!
  • Rayona Saraswat did a great job competing at this meet dropping more than 3 seconds in her 50 Back! She also smashed her previous 200 Free time and returned for Finals where she dropped even more time!
  • Claire Olsen dropped almost 10 seconds in her 100 IM while keeping her strokes smooth and strong! Her meet performance can be linked back to her practices where she’s always holding herself accountable and doing the right thing.
  • Joshua Hunter is always energized and ready to work when he comes to practice, which showed at this meet as he dropped in all his events! With focus and technique, continued drops are very likely in the future!
  • Alex Belkin crushed it at this meet making 5/6 event finals! A big shout out as he did the 200 Fly not once, but twice!! He was also able to drop 22 seconds from his Prelims time to his Finals time. He also went a smoking 27.52 in his 50 Free!
  • Viktoriia Iakovleva qualified for Finals in her 200 Breast. She had a strong race both Prelims and Finals working on her pacing and pushing her glides before bringing the race home strong! She even dropped more than a second between her Prelims and Finals swim for that event!
  • Alizeh Kurji fought till the end, swimming both Prelims and Finals in her 100 Back. She dropped time in both swims, earning herself a 1.05 second total drop from her entry time. She worked hard on her arm and kick tempo making sure to still pull water as she went.
  • Lydia Liu dominated as she made Finals in 5/6 of her events! She especially shined in her breaststroke events. She is a powerhouse when it comes to breaststroke between her strong kick and the ability to move the water in her pull. She was able to drop more than 27 seconds in her 100 Breast as well as place Top 5 in her 50 Breast!
  • Anishi Singh killed it in her 200 IM where she got to swim not only in Prelims but made Finals as well! She worked on pushing her stronger strokes, which helped her have a 5-second drop in Prelims then another 4-second drop in Finals for a whopping 9.62 seconds overall!
  • Zach Zeng made Finals in all six events, which means he raced 12 times over the weekend!!! He made A Finals in four events, placing Top 5 in those races. He pushed through, dropping time in all his races; especially his 200 Breast where he dropped 15.23 total seconds!
  • Michael Zhou also made Finals for all six events!! He showed consistent swims across the board, which correlates with consistent time drops he had in both Prelims and Finals. He really stepped up at this meet racing hard and bringing his practice skills to the blocks with him!
  • Jonah Lynn made 5/6 Finals, making it an exciting race weekend for him!! He dropped time in his 50 Free, which he has worked hard on making sure he has a strong body position that paid off big time! He also placed Top 10 in his 100 Back, 200 Breast, and 50 Fly.
  • Emily MacDonald powered through, making Finals in all six of her events! She even got to swim the 200 Fly twice! She dominated in her 200 Free, sticking to the pacing dropping a handful of seconds. She also killed her 50 Free earning herself a BB time in that event!
