Wave Swimmers Dominate at Age Group Champs!
PNS Age Group Championships Meet Recap
Wave had one of our best performances at PNS Age Group Champs in the past 30 years, scoring 4th place (out of about 40 teams) and just 5 points from 3rd. We were led by Adi Beibit, who broke/tied two team records, won three events, and was the High Point winner for the 10&Under Boys. Huge shout outs to Ethan Lin, who broke the team record for the 13-14 Boys 50m Free and won two races, to Anton Mazepa, who broke a team record, and to Bennett Geitz, who earned his first Sectionals cut.
Many of our points were scored by our B and C relays. That depth was crucial to our performance, so a special shout out to all the swimmers who came down just to swim relays!
We also saw the most new US Motivational cuts in one meet in years with 3 AAAA, 15 AAA, and 31 AA times!
Age Group 2
AG2 sent 18 swimmers to Champs. We had a tremendous meet, with those athletes who put in consistent work all summer seeing multiple time drops and several new motivational cuts. We did especially well in our bonus events, with several swimmers blasting past the standard. Our relay swims were exceptional, with most athletes swimming lifetime bests to help our relays score a boatload of points.
- Fiona Herman got us off to a tremendous start with a huge 9-second drop in her 200 Fly in prelims, blasting her final 50 to move up four places and earn a place in finals where she was nearly as fast as the morning to pick up some big points for Wave. Fiona scored 19.5 points for Wave.
- Olivia Liu absolutely smoked her 200 Breast, leading her heat nearly the entire way with a fabulous glide and descended her 50s perfectly to drop 9 seconds and earn a new A time. Olivia scored 6.5 points for Wave.
- Adi Beibit swam his first meet for Wave in two years and made finals in multiple events. One of his top performances was the 50 Fly where he came from behind in the final 5 meters to a pick up a 1st Place tie and earned a new AAA time, his first with Wave. Adi scored 108 points.
- Rhea Dawani swam her first-ever 200 Breast less than two weeks ago. At Champs, she raced 6 seconds faster and ran down all but one swimmer on the final 50 to earn her first 11-12 BB time.
- Norah Braun went out fast in her 200 Breast and used a much-improved body position to hang on in the second 100 to slash 5 seconds off her best time.
- Max Malinovskyi had a barnburner of a 200 IM, going out fast in his fly, sprinting his back, then using excellent glide to build a huge lead, allowing him to outrace everyone in his free leg to drop 14 seconds and pick up his BB cut.
- Eva Kalicinski got aggressive with perfect streamlines and fast turnover in her 100 Breast to jump over the A time and straight to her first AA time, as well as earn a spot in finals and score important points for Wave. Eva scored 25 points for Wave.
- Aditeya Verma smoothed out his backstroke hand entries in his 50 Back to enable excellent body position and a huge 2-second drop and almost earn a new A time. Aditeya scored 11 points for Wave.
- Deniz Cankaya churned out an amazing 100 Back, dropping 2 seconds in prelims, then another 1 second in finals to score big points in the B final. Deniz scored 17 points for Wave.
- Ally Yuan used perfect pacing in her 200 Back, descending her last three 50s beautifully and pulling with powerful strokes to drop 6 seconds and earn a new BB time.
- Leo Chen’s backstroke leg in his 200 IM was as good as he has ever swum the stroke with excellent body position, arm turnover, and fast kick. This set him up for his breast and free legs where he cranked up his speed and slashed 9 seconds off his previous best.
- Lucy Broyles swam a beautiful 200 Back, using excellent pacing and strong flutter on her back half to crush her previous time and move closer to an A time.
- Benji Ovendale used a greatly improved and much smoother backstroke to blast 3 seconds off his 100 Back time. He picked up his kick tempo beautifully on the second 50 to help him close in on a new A time. Benji scored 10.5 points for Wave.
- Tim Ravochuk kept his 100 Fly quick and relaxed for the first 75 meters, then blasted his final 25 to run down other swimmers and knock 4 seconds off his best time. Tim scored 7 points for Wave.
- Elise Kabakci turned in a superb back half on her 200 IM to run other swimmers down left and right, dropping more than 5 seconds. Her breaststroke showed great improvement especially in her arm speed while her freestyle was very aggressive, allowing her to blow past her opponents. Elise scored 3.5 points for Wave.
- Aaron Chakraborty, Maksim Nikitenko, and George Ursulenko all played key roles in relays with blistering fast splits. Aaron scored 4 points for Wave while Maksim picked up an official best time leading off the 400 Medley Relay and George swam super fast splits to help his relays!
Senior Prep & High School
Sr. Prep & High School had such a great meet at PNS LC Champs. We had 209 successful swims with 154 best times. We also had another 28 swims that were right at our best or within a half a second of their best. Our average time improvement for all our races was 2.07 seconds! Here are the meet highlights:
- Ahana Bhattacharya had an impressive 7.78-second improvement in her 200 Back and a new A time! She attacked her walls with fast turns and great dolphin kicks and had amazing first and last 50 splits! What a swim, Ahana!
- Henry Cheng's best swim of the meet was his 100 Breast. He made finals, placing 15th in the event and dropped a solid 1.5 seconds in his finals swim from his best time. He looked much quicker with his arms and had really snappy legs to move up a place from his prelims swim. Henry scored 4 points for Wave.
- Lola Cheng dropped in every race she swam at champs. Her most impressive improvement was in her 200 Breast where she improved by 2.66 seconds with better pulls and excellent timing of her strokes. Lola scored 1.5 points for Wave.
- Ellen Feng improved in every event she swam, and her meet highlight was a toss up between her 5th place finishes in both the 50 Fly and 100 Fly. She has improved her butterfly breathing so well in a very short time. Ellen scored 85 points for Wave.
- Claire Gao had an impressive showing in prelims and finals, with the highlight of her meet being the 100 Fly where she dropped more than a second and really swam the race without fear and finished so strong at the end of the 100. Claire scored 96 points for Wave.
- Sophia Gorveatt had an outstanding meet, so there are a lot of races to choose from but her meet highlight is an easy pick for me. She was the 3rd seed heading into finals in the 200 Fly. She paced her first 50 beautifully, and really took it to her competition in the middle 100. She was less than a second off the leader at the 150 mark, and despite getting a bit further behind on the underwaters off the last wall, she started chasing the leader down for the last 50. She improved almost 6 seconds on the swim and finished second. Sophia scored 78.5 points for Wave.
- Caden Gray's meet highlight was a toss up between his outstanding swims on our 400 relays or his 200 Back where he improved by over 7 seconds by nailing every turn! Caden scored 4 points for Wave.
- Oliva Henaire improved in every event she swam and had a number of races that could be a meet highlight. Her 1500 Free swim, however, was her meet highlight as she was so excited about the race, raced it so well, and improved the most in this race. She paced the race exactly as we had practiced, and then clobbered that pace on the final 400. She chased a couple swimmers down on the back half of the race and improved her time by just shy of a full minute! Olivia scored 85 points for Wave.
- Nora Herman's meet highlight was her 200 Fly. She earned her way into finals with a monster 7.5-second drop in prelims for 16th. Then in Finals she dropped 2.25 more seconds and picked up three places on her competition. The 200 Fly is a difficult double, and she showed great determination and resilience to swim even faster despite the difficulty of swimming the event twice in one day. Nora scored 5 points for Wave.
- Lauren Hizzey dropped in every event she swam at Champs. She was entered in the 1500 as a bonus swim as she had not qualified for the PNS time standard in the event. She swam a beautiful first Long Course Mile and crushed the qualifying time by over 6 seconds and placed 13th in all PNS! Lauren scored 8 points for Wave.
- Yuzuki Ishizuka has improved so much since in the past year. She had an awesome 200 Free, but her meet highlight was another amazing 200 Fly double swim, which she entered as a bonus swim. She made the B Final in prelims and then dropped 5.5 seconds on her prelims time to move up a place in finals. Amazing 200 Fly double. Yuzuki scored 14 points for Wave.
- Dami Jung improved in 9/10 individual swims at champs. She had outstanding swims in her 100 & 200 Breast, but her most impressive improvement was in her 400 IM where she improved more than 6 seconds and showed how much she has improved in every stroke. She prefers shorter events or breaststroke events, and to have as much success as she did in her longest event of the meet really shows how much better she is getting at being mentally tough and not being afraid of an event just because it is longer/more difficult. Dami scored 74 points for Wave.
- Maria Kokhan did such a good job at champs despite being very nervous before just about every event. She swam outstanding in her backstroke races picking up her first AA time in the 100. Her meet highlight, however, was her 200 Back in prelims where she improved more than 8 seconds and really had the best looking technique I have seen from her. Maria scored 13 points for Wave.
- Yihan Li improved in every event she swam at Champs, making the decision on what to highlight more difficult. However, her 200 Back really stood out. She was tough in the middle of the race and had fast turns. She improved more than 7 seconds and had her best place in her individual events. Outstanding swimming Yihan!
- Bryan Lin had some major drops at the meet including an AA time in his 50 Breast, but the highlight of the meet was his 7+ second improvement in the 100 Breast. He dropped a solid 4+ seconds in prelims and another 3 more seconds in finals for 13th place. He usually steers himself towards free and fly, but his breaststroke is improving so quickly that the IMs and breast events may be his better races in the future. Bryan scored 34.5 points for Wave.
- Karina Maksyutov dropped in every event she swam, and she had dropped a ton of time in her 200 IM to qualify for LC PNS at the Seattle Open. Then she came to champs and dropped 2 more seconds after the huge drop a couple weeks earlier. Outstanding 200 IM swims, Karina!
- Andy Nguyen's meet highlight is an easy one. He dropped more than 2.5 seconds in his 200 Breast with an excellent efficient breaststroke for the first 150 of the race, and then he poured it on for his last 50 and outraced many of his competitors on the finish. He earned an AA time with the swim. Andy scored 13.5 points for Wave.
- Irene Qu improved in every event she swam at LC Champs and earned three new AAA times! It is difficult to choose a highlight, but her 50 Breast stands out as she dropped half a second in prelims to make it to the A final as 7th seed, and then she outraced many of her competitors with incredible tempo and quick legs to move up to 5th! Irene scored 65.5 points for Wave.
- Anika Razdan was another swimmer who squeaked into champs with a qualifying swim at the Seattle Open. She chose the 200 Back as her bonus event and wow, was that a good choice! She improved almost 5 seconds in the race with excellent tempo and pacing in the middle of her swim. She then finished the last 50 with great tempo and legs! Great backstroke swim, Anika!
- Sanvi Shrivastava had an excellent swim in her 50 Back. She had a great start launching herself out of the water and had the best tempo I have seen from her ever in backstroke. She improved almost 1 second, which is a big improvement for a 50. Great job improving your tempo Sanvi!
- Maxim Smagley helped out our 200 and 400 Free relays and the meet highlight was his 100 Split in the 400 Free Relay. The boys dropped more than 4.66 seconds compared to their aggregate entry time, and he was a huge part of our B relay's 13th place finish. Max scored 3 points for Wave.
- Beata Sobol's meet highlight is an easy one in that she did such a great job with her 400 Free pacing before the race and nailed that for the first 200 yards, and then clobbered her pacing at the end for a huge 8-second drop. Such a gritty performance and she chased several swimmers down during the swim. Beata scored 5 points for Wave.
- Han Sun's meet highlight was a 17-second improvement in his 400 IM. It really shows how much he has improved all around from his fast turns to his much improved technique and endurance. I loved how aggressive he was with his backstroke after the butterfly. Han scored 5 points for Wave.
- Lasya Viswanadham had an outstanding 100 Fly. She often looks amazing in the beginning of this race, and this time she finished it with speed, tempo, and rhythm. She improved by more than 3 seconds and had her highest place finish in this event. Lasya scored 3 points for Wave.
- Piper Wiegand did such a great job on her 400 Free. She crushed the pacing we had practiced and talked about before the race, and she chased a couple swimmers down in the middle and again at the end of the race. She ended up improving almost 12 seconds over her previous best time. Piper scored 3 points for Wave.
- Arjun Yadav has improved in every stroke since he moved to Sr Prep, but especially in butterfly. The highlight of the meet was his swim in the 200 IM where he dropped more than 2 seconds starting off with that much improved fly. He kept his tempo up on his backstroke and crushed the breaststroke leg. Arjun scored 4.5 points for Wave.
- Andy Yang had many great swims at champs, placing 6th in three different events. The highlight of the meet was his 200 IM swim in Finals. He had a great prelims swim to drop more than 3 seconds, and then he had another great swim in finals with another 1.5 seconds faster than the morning. Excellent job with the race strategy and what a breaststroke leg! Andy scored 33.5 points for Wave.
- Isshin Yokoyama has an outstanding meet. He had ten individual swims plus relays and had many outstanding improvements. His 200 and 400 IM stood out as his best swims, but the 200 IM was more impressive. He took the fly out beautifully quick and loose and absolutely crushed the last 150 of the event. He dropped more than 8 seconds and ended up in 13th in finals. Isshin scored 13.5 points for Wave.
- Grace Zhang swam so well at Champs. It's tough to choose between her 100 or 200 Breast for the best swim of the meet, but the 200 was perhaps a more impressive drop for her. She was quick, but with a long glide and swam the race strategy perfectly by building up the third 50 and really putting it all out there on the last 50. She improved more than 5 seconds on the swim. I love how efficient you are in that 200 Breast, Grace!
- Sasha Arlouski had a number of good individual swims, but his highlight were his great relay swims. The 400 Medley Relay stands out as all four boys on the relay combined to drop 3.89 seconds from their entry time. The B relay ended up getting 12th and earned solid points for Wave. Sasha scored 6.5 points for Wave.
- Kamilla Bugaitsova had a solid fly swim on the 400 Medley Relay. She had good rhythm and tempo on the first leg going out quick and loose and she came home with a solid back half split. Thanks for helping wave on the relay Kamilla!
- Landon Yuan had a solid 50 Breast split on our 200 Medley Relay, splitting just off his best time. He looked great with a fast pull and quick legs. Nice swimming on the relay Landon!
- Lina Wu had some excellent relay swims on our 400 Free and 400 Medley Relays along with a couple of her individual events. Her highlight of the meet was her relay swims, with the 400 Medley the best in that the girls combined to drop over 8 seconds from their entry time, and got 14th place! Lina scored 2.5 points for Wave.
- Liya Wu helped out on our 400 Medley and 400 Free Relays. Her highlight was leading off the 400 Medley Relay where she dropped almost 2 seconds from her best time for her 100 Back split. Since the backstroke split is first it counts as an official time. Liya scored 1 point for Wave.
- Bimu Beibit had a ton of highlights to choose from with three 4th place finishes and making it back to finals for every event. His 4th place and AAA time in his 200 IM as well as an almost 3-second improvement was one of his most impressive swims of his meet. It really showed his excellent technique in all four strokes. Bimu scored 71 points.

Great Job to all the Age Group 1 and White Group Swimmers!!!
Senior 1 & Senior Epic
Senior 1 had 11 swimmers compete at the 14&Under Championships and all did a fantastic job of stepping up and racing incredibly well. Several moved up spots from prelims to get themselves into finals. Everyone who competed walked away with at least one best time, and we had one swimmer who was crowned champion in not just one but two individual events. It was a blast to watch the swimmers race so well and see them so excited about their performances. This group put in a ton of hard work this season and it really paid off.
- Daniel Chen had a full meet swimming six individual events and three relays. He did a wonderful job racing hard all weekend with his biggest swims coming on the final day of the meet. After his toughest day, he dialed it in for Day 3 and turned in a monster swim in the 400 IM. He got off to a great start going right at his best time in the fly, swam a strong backstroke leg, crushed the breast, and turned on the jets coming home in the freestyle resulting in a huge 9-second drop. - Kirsten Hau was feeling the effects of moving into a new group and was feeling tired and broken down. Then we hit the taper and all the hard work she put herself through paid off in a huge way. She was all smiles after all her races as she swam fantastically and—in her own words—felt amazing in the pool. She started the meet off with a bang, dropping 4 seconds in the 200 Breast getting herself even closer to breaking the 3;00 barrier. She dropped time in the 200 Breast three times this season.
- Kirill Kadach took a summer class, so he was doing workouts I sent to him alone three days a week. He put in the effort in both practices and on his own and it really showed at the meet as he crushed his best times in everything he swam. He has been working on swimming the 200 Free with more consistency and he did just that, keeping under control on the way out then held pace the rest for the way for a huge 8-second drop and going sub 2:20 for the first time. Kirill scored 5 points for Wave.
- Ethan Lin was eager to show what a speedster he could be. He turned up the heat in the 100 Free, finishing first in prelims. He would go on to take first place in the 50 Free as well, breaking a team record in both prelims and again in finals. Ethan scored 82.5 points for Wave.

She stayed strong and came home well giving herself a 4-second drop and going under 1:30 for the first time ever. Vien scored 5 points for Wave.
- Maya Surugiu got off to a bit of a flat start in her first race, but didn’t let that get her down as she showed immense mental and physical toughness stepping up and racing hard the rest of the meet. Her best race came at the end of the meet in the 200 Back. She fought her way to a huge drop in prelims and landed herself in the A final. In finals, she stepped up once again and dropped 2 more seconds. Both times, she had an incredible last 100 really turning on the speed to come home and passed several swimmers in her heat. Maya scored 56.5 points for Wave.
- Molly Traina had her best meet since joining the group. She put her speed on display, absolutely crushing the sprint freestyle events. They had a blast swimming on relays and duking it out SMAC and BC for the top spots in each race. They put in some serious work this season and it really paid off for them.
- Adrian Juco continued to show that he is a breaststroke swimmer on the rise. He swam an absolutely incredible 200 Breast to kick off his racing. He went out fast and was able to hold on very well, finishing strong, dropping 7 seconds, and getting his AAAA time in the 200 to match his 100 speed. He had a very strong 100 Breast as well, going right off his best time in both prelims and finals and securing a 2nd place finish. Adrian scored 65.5 points for Wave.
- Anton Mazepa wasn’t about to let an unfortunate bike accident slow him down. He came to the meet ready to rock and roll and that is exactly what he did. He has always fancied himself a backstroker and at this meet, he put himself onto the board as one of the Wave greats. In the 200 Back prelims, he had a strong swim, breaking 2:20 for the first time and setting a team record. He was not done there however as he turned around and gave it his all in finals finishing 2nd and breaking his own record set earlier by 2 more seconds. Anton scored 66.5 points for Wave.
