Wave Rocktober Open Meet Recap

Wave’s Sport Team kicked off the new season with a great weekend of swimming while the Select Team joined in, swimming just one day. Everyone walked away feeling good about their hard work and effort in practice. Our 8&Unders especially swam fabulous, with everyone performing a Pentathlon and racing five events in just one day!!! A shout out to Addy Clarke, who was a perfect 3/3 in new AAA times! A big shout out to Braxton Davis and Joseph Foster, who both went 6/6 in new B times. A huge shout out to Zoey Stark and Asmi Sarkar, who both went 6/6 in new B and BB times.

High School

There were an outstanding amount of best times swam. Everyone has been grinding and working so hard in practice and it shows! This is just the beginning of the season; I can’t wait to see what happens the rest of the year! We had 1 AA swim, 3 A swims, 12 BB swims, and 27 B swims. It’s only up from here!

Purple Group

A group

  • Ethan Chan showed how far he’s come since last season dropping time in every event, including over 20 seconds in both his 200 IM and 200 Breast! Very impressive time drops and great work at practice!
  • Alina Karptsova got two new times for events she had previously not swam including the 200 fly. She earned 2 new B times and a BB time in her 50 Free! Swimming fast on both her 200s and 50s made for a very impressive Rocktober performance.
  • Eric Zhou received his first two B times in his new age group in both the 50 Back and 100 Back. His hard work and extra dedication to the sport puts him on the fast track for consistent improvement. Very exciting to see the growth and progress unfold!
  • Lydia Liu dropped time in all her events and received a new BB time in 50 Free! With having a positive mindset and focused goals she achieved some great new time standards and PRs!
  • Ishaan Pol was only able to swim one day for this meet but absolutely crushed the day he had. He dropped 12 seconds in his 100 Breast and 28 seconds in his 100 Free!
  • Tvesa Bansal got all new best times and received her first B time at this meet. She’s been putting in extra work at practice and outside of it which has been paying off! She not only succeeded at having fast swims but also smart swims with a focus on how she could improve in the future.

B Group

  • Amarissa Chandra swam two new 200s at this meet getting great first times for both the 200 Back and 200 Free. Her other highlight was her 100 IM where she dropped a whopping 13 seconds!
  • Alex Korolis had his first meet with Wave and performed excellent. He had one of the harder lists of events including 50, 100, and 200 Fly. He swam all these events legally and got solid first times in the 100 and 200 Fly!
  • Elizabeth Lytvynenko also had her first meet with Wave, swimming all new events and earning great times. Her motivation to keep swimming during tough sets is great to see from such a new member of the team!
  • Lindsey Caruso swam a lot of new fly events at this meet including the 100 Fly and 200 Fly! Her other events were speedy and quick with a focus on good technique.
  • Victor Shirshov had a smashing meet dropping time in every event including three events where he dropped over 10 seconds on each! His leadership and dedication during practice are always positive influences on his teammates.

White Group

White Group absolutely crushed the Rocktober meet, and every swimmer should be extremely proud of how they swam! We got a lot of silver times, a lot of first B and BB times (including 16 who earned their first-ever B time), and so many first-time legal swims!

  • Sebastian Chan had a fantastic swim meet and has grown so much as a swimmer since he’s been in White Group. He has gone from being one of the last swimmers in A group to get his first B-time to being one of the first swimmers in A group to get a BB-time. At this meet he swam his first 200 Free and is only 4 seconds away from a B-time in it, crushing the silver with a time of 3:13.20. He also dropped 1.5 seconds in his 50 fly to gain a B-time, which means he now has a B time in each stroke plus an IM event! He also got his first BB-time in the 50 Breast, dropping 2.20 seconds to gain it.
  • Katelyn Chen swam so fast if you looked away for just a second, you would miss her entire race. She came to RACE this weekend like I’ve never seen her race before. She gained three B-times, as well as her first two BB-times in the 50 and 100 Breast. She dropped a whopping 24.59 seconds total in the two events, 20 of those seconds in the 100! She also swam the 200 Free for the first time and even managed to get a B-time on her first try. In all her events, she collectively dropped more than 51 seconds!
  • Poppy Covington is a swimmer who just moved up to White Group and did a fantastic job at this meet. She swam five new events this weekend and was legal in every single one! She also dropped an impressive 2.33 seconds in her 50 Free as well as her first silver time and a ticket to the AGI meet in her 50 Back!
  • Felix Henaire is showing major signs of improvement. At this meet he proved he wants to be a better swimmer and step up his game immensely. He got two new legal times in the 100 Breast and 100 IM and dropped 9+ seconds in all three 50s he swam, including a crushing 15 seconds in the 50 Back that got him his silver time and a chance to swim at the AGI meet!
  • Ira Joshi raced her way to four B-times in this meet and one of those was in the 200 Free, which was also the first time she swam it! She got her other B-times by dropping 3 seconds in the 50 Back, 6 seconds in the 50 Free and 9 seconds in the 100 IM!
  • David Li had a strong meet, where he swam so fast he not only got his first B-time, but also his first BB-time! H3 was one of four swimmers to not only legally swim the 100 Fly for the first time, but also get a B-time in the event! His biggest time drops were in the 100 Breast and 100 IM, dropping over 10 seconds in both events. To gain his BB-time, He dropped more than 6 seconds in his 50 Breast to gain it!
  • Ethan Pan dropped major time in five events. He’s had a BB-time in his 50 Back for a long time and he did such an amazing job he now only needs to drop 2.1 seconds to gain his very first A-time! He also dropped more than 12 seconds in his 100 Back to gain his second BB-time. At this meet he proved he’s not just a one stroke pony because he also gained B-times in the 50 Free and 50 Breast!
  • Daniel Sarana new to the team. He swam four events legally for the first time, dropped time in the two events he already had a time in, and got two B-times (50 and 100 Breast). He dropped 3 seconds to gain his 50 B-time in the 50 Breast and earned his B-time in 100 Breast the very first time he swam it!
  • Asmi Sarkar had the best meet of anyone in White Group, absolutely crushing her personal best times in each event. Not only did she score a motivational time in each of her races, she also scored her first 3 BB-times as well! She now has BB-time in the 50 Breast, 50 Fly, and 50 Free dropping over a combined total of 11 seconds. She also dropped 21+ seconds in the 100 Free and 11 seconds in her 100 IM to gain B-time in those events. She even swam the 200 Free for the first time and crushed the B-time by 4 seconds! She is definitely a swimmer to look out for and I couldn’t be more proud of the progress she’s made!
  • Max Schrepfer is a new swimmer to the team and shows a lot of promise. There was nothing he could do but gain brand new firsts this meet. He gained five new legal times with four of those times being silver times to earn his opportunity to shine again at the AGI meet. He also scored a B-time at his very first swim meet in the 50 Breast!
  • Anika Thondamuthur had a very successful swim meet, dropping big time in all five events she could and got her first legal 100 Breast! Her biggest time drop was in her 100 IM dropping 22.63 seconds. She also snagged two silver times in the 50 Free and 50 Breast to qualify for the AGI meet!
  • Phoebe Zhang Is a brand new swimmer and absolutely destroyed her very first swim meet. She not only successfully gained 5/6 legal times, but all five were new B-times! She swam the 100 Free, 100 IM, 50 Back, 50 Breast, and 50 Free so fast those B-times were no match for her!

Black Group

The coaches are super proud of our Black Group swimmers for their first meet of the season, and what was for many of them their first swim meet. As always, a thank you to the parents who had their swimmer there on time prepared with their E/H/L info and everything else they need. There is a lot of anxiety for a lot of them at swim meets but taking care of basics like this—not being rushed, knowing you have what you need, and being on time for warm-up—is always a great place to start from. Thank you for taking care of those things!

If you volunteered to help make the meet happen, thank you. There are too many roles needed at a meet for the coaches to cover and try to observe the races, talk to the swimmers, etc. Thank you for doing those things so we can focus on our job.

On the swimming side, the kids did great. There were many lessons learned—some hard lessons, some good lessons—but many lessons and experiences for them. The meet was set up as a Pentathlon for 8&U swimmers: they had to legally finish all five races, and times were added up to get a total time. This is a fun event line-up and stresses all the details they’ve been working on at practices.

Girls:

Aaradhya (2nd), Finley (3rd), Cora (4th), Raya (5th), Jojo (6th), Margaret (7th), Naomi (8th), Julie (9th), Emmy (11th), Lily (13th), Aabha (15th), Neeva (16th), Simaya (18th), Keira (19th), Evelyn (20th)

Boys:

Remy (2nd), Mo (5th), Ryan (7th), Porter (9th), Kevin (10th), Avyaan (12th), Tim (13th), Gavin (14th), Jeremy (15th tie), Felix (15th tie), James (17th), Kai (18th), Chen (19th)

A few individual highlights from the meet:

  • Aadhya Sirimamilla competed both days as a 9-year-old and had a great meet showing lots of the improvements she’s been working on at practices, and completing a number of new events including- 100 Back, 100 Free, 50 Breast, and 50 Fly.
  • Angela Pan has been putting in a strong effort at practices and it showed in her improvements with some very nice time drops in four races. She just needs a couple skills in her breaststroke to be able to complete the pentathlon.
  • Eleanor Liu does an awesome job at practices and completed 4/5 races legally at her first meet. I know she’ll keep working hard at practice to get her butterfly down!
  • Robert Gilmore swam in his first meet with Wave, and finished 4/5 races legally, including one of the hardest ones—the 25 Fly—for new swimmers to do. The coaches are confident he’ll put in a good effort to get his breaststroke down.
  • Orko Chakraborty also was able to legally finish 4/5 races at this meet and did an awesome job racing. His freestyle looked really fast, and we’re excited to see him continue to work and grow as an athlete!
  • Bode Boone was another brand-new swimmer able to get 4/5 races and look good doing it! He raced hard and asked some good questions at the meet!
  • Anya Agarwal swam in her first meet with us and raced really hard in all of them. She has been working on a ton of things at practice and we think she continue to grow and improve. We’re excited to be along for her ride!

Congratulations to ALL our Black Group swimmers who competed at the meet! We look forward to seeing more racing from ALL of you!!!

Senior 1

Our group had 29 swimmers compete at the meet. While the group only swam on Sunday, the swimmers made the most out of their opportunity to compete. We saw a lot of best times, a new champs qualifier, and overall very good racing. As with the last meet, the group used this meet for training and we swam hard all the way up to the meet. I saw a lot of improvement in some of the finer details that go into swimming fast which makes me super excited for our racing moving forward. This group has been training incredibly well and I am excited to see the payoff already showing and cannot wait to see what the group can do when we get into our rest meets later in the season. Looking forward to a fast rest of the year!

  • Dario Giuliani has been going beast mode in his training lately, he has really stepped up making faster intervals and holding faster times on sprint sets. That hard work showed in his racing resulting in three best times, one of which was a huge 8-second drop. He put together a very solid 200 Back demonstrating improved turns and self-control as he split well the entire race giving him a solid new best time in the event.
  • Kirsten Hau is not afraid to take on any stroke set and sometimes even takes on freestyle sets doing butterfly. This fearlessness shows through in her racing as well as she is willing to take on any race and will stay tough from start to finish. One race that she did just that was the 200 Fly, she got off to a great start then evenly split the rest of the race staying strong all the way into the finish giving herself a huge 3-second drop.
  • Isabella Vasilescu coming off a long course season where she saw success in distance freestyle and butterfly events, and she picked up right where she left off, turning in a spectacular swim in the 200 Fly. She had great splits throughout and turned on the jets to come home strong giving her a 6-second drop and her first short course champs qualifying time.

Age Group 1

AG1 Group had some amazing swims at the meet. The kids have been working hard developing better stroke mechanics and building up into swimming some longer events. It was awesome to see the kids improve and to see their technique continue to improve. Great job to the whole group.

  • Akira Andhare had a great swim meet dropping time in all three of their events. Akira’s stand out swim was their 100 Back, dropping 16 seconds in the event. Akira did an awesome job of having strong turns and great kick outs off the walls.
  • Avani Yadav had a great meet dropping time in two events and completing her first 100 Fly. Great job!!! The 100 Fly was a fantastic swim where she was able to keep her kick going on the second 50 and kept those arms moving long throughout the swim.
  • Nolan Gu had a tremendous meet at the meet. He completed his very first 200 Free and dropped time in both of his other events. His standout swim was his 46-second drop in the 50 Breast. He kept his kick strong and arms hitting his glide hard throughout for an awesome time drop.

Age Group 2

We trained hard right through the meet, including a tough freestyle set the night before. The AG2 swimmers showed off their growing confidence with tons of best times, new motivational times, and several new cuts. I can’t wait to see how they swim in our November meets!

  • Flora-May Lawerence has really increased her work ethic this fall and it showed as she dropped in all three races, with the biggest being her 13-second drop in the 200 Free where she split her 50s just the way we practice and just missed breaking the 3:00 barrier!
  • Anna Ventura has been rocking workouts and all that hard work paid off big with three solid drops and two new motivational times. She’s discovered that she’s really good at butterfly and executed beautiful race strategy to drop 8+ seconds in her 100 Fly. She’s also only half a second away from breaking the :30 in her 50 Free!
  • Dan Sun has turned up the heat in practice and now almost always leads his lane. All that effort lead to three big drops at the meet, highlighted by a beautiful 50 Breast where he has worked hard on accelerating his pulls and driving into his streamlines. That laser focus resulted in a 3+ second drop and a new BB time!

Senior Prep

The SR Prep Group crushed the Saturday of the Roc-Tober Meet with a bunch of fast swimming and time drops. The whole group swam in the 50 Free to put some of the hard sprinting that the group has been putting into practice. It was awesome to see that hard work pay off with more than 80% of the group getting a best time in the event. Great work to the group!!!

  • Landon Yuan crushed the weekend but his standout swim comes from his 200 Free where he took his swim out aggressively and fought hard on the back 100 to hang on for a 28-second drop.
  • Karina Maksyutov had a very strong weekend of swimming dropping over 30 seconds in time between her 3 swims. Karina’s stand out swim was her 13-second drop in her 200 Breast, where she paced it perfectly and kept strong pull outs off each wall.
  • Henry Cheng had great races at the meet. He edged off some time in both his 50 Free and 50 Breast and dominated his 200 Free, dropping 43 seconds. He did an amazing job of taking his race out strong and working his underwaters off each to crush the swim.

Senior Epic

Senior Epic swam only one day at the meet after a very intense week of practice. The group swam through the meet one more time and we used this meet as another opportunity to swim fast while tired from our training. And they did a fantastic job staying focused and racing hard on Sunday. There were lots of fast swims and some swimmers also went best times. I was excited to see where the group is in terms of speed and skills applied into their races at this point of the season! Enjoy some highlights from our group:

Oleg Arlouski has been crushing his sets at practice and had an excellent meet dropping time in two events, the 200 IM (- 2.52 seconds) and the 200 Back ( -2.35 seconds). Oleg did a great job executing consistent underwater dolphin kicks in all his races and this is a positive reflection of his training.

Hailey Crawford was able to go three fast swims, including one best time in the 50 Fly. She looked strong in all her races. In the 50 Fly she did an excellent job holding the technique she has been working on and improving during our sets. She had a solid 0.77 tenths of a second drop.

Anton Mazepa came strong to the meet and went best times in both his Backstrokes events. In the 200 Back, he dropped 1.54 seconds and broke the 2:00 barrier for the first time (1.59.51). Anton has been focusing more on his underwater dolphin kicks and breakouts at practice and it showed in both of his races this weekend.
