Young Select Swimmers Earn Big Motivational Cuts!

Jay Pearson

MMSC November Invitational

Wave’s AG1, AG2 and Senior Prep swimmers journeyed up to Marysville for the first meet with relays to test US Swimming’s new motivational relay times and wow did our relay teams impress, including two AAAA times! A big shout out also to Ellen Feng, who earned her first 11-12 AAAA time in the 50 Fly (28.01)!

Age Group 1

The AG1 Athletes had a dominant meet at the Mighty Marlins Meet. The group had several kids pick up either their first Champs Cut of the season or added to their slate of events for the meet. We also had a tremendous showing in the Motivational Times department with a lot of new letters and even two boys on a AAAA Boys Relay. It was awesome to see the kids crush it at the meet and great to see their work in practice showing up in the pool competing. Standout Swims of the Meet:

  • Arifin Capiral had a very great meet with time drops in five events. It’s hard to pick between his 100 IM and 100 Free for standout swim, but the 100 IM stands out the most since the stroke technique in all four events really showed through, resulting in a 3-second drop.
  • Hayley Chou crushed the weekend dropping more than a minute between all six swims. She had an amazing 200 Free where she went out fast, stayed fast, and finished fast to drop 37 seconds in the event. Wow!!!
  • Siena Stahlkopf had a great meet dropping time in four events. Her standout swim was her 200 Free where she dropped 13.5 seconds in the event. She showed some great development in her ability to swim the whole event with a very strong finish.
  • Claire Wang had an awesome weekend of swimming, going a best time in four events and completing her first legal 100 IM. Her 50 Back stood out the most with a 5-second drop and a great turn at the wall for a strong swim.
  • Avani Yadav had a tremendous weekend of swimming going 6/6 in best times. She gets a double shoutout: – first her 100 IM where she dropped 24 seconds and second her 200 Free where she dropped 19 seconds. Both swims were awesome and showed the hard work she has been putting into practice.

Great work to all the AG1 athletes!

Age Group 2

AG2 crushed the MMSC meet, with several new Champs cuts and a boatload of time drops. Two of the boys even swam on the AAAA Boys Relay! It was great to see them put in all that hard work we’ve been doing on swimming strong in the back half of our 100s and 200s. Standout Swims of the Meet:

  • Max Sun helped lead the way for AG2 with a new AAA and two AA swims as well as being a member of the AAAA relay (on his birthday, even!). His standout swim was his 100 IM where he perfectly paced each stroke with great technique and blasted home on his freestyle leg to drop 11+ seconds to earn an 11-12 Champs cut and a new AAA time.
  • Anna Ventura has really turned up her workout ethic and it paid off big time with three new BB times and five best times. Her standout swim was her 100 Fly where she went out fast and finished with a strong back half, scoring 5th place. She’s worked hard on her technique and is turning into an excellent flyer.
  • Alex Yang has been working hard on smoothing out his free and back technique and it really showed at the meet as he earned a new B time and his first BB time with his relay team. His standout swim was his 200 IM, where he showed great improvement in his weaker strokes (fly and breast), nailed his turns (especially his streamlines off his turns), and dropped 29 seconds.
  • Stas Black had an amazing meet, which reflects his growing confidence in practice at how hard he can push himself and went 5/6 best times including a 24.6-second drop in his 200 Free. His standout swim was his 500 Free, where he showed off all that hard work by dropping 1:38 (98 seconds!). He willed himself to swim hard no matter how uncomfortable in became and shattered the 8:00 mark, going 7:13!
  • Norah Braun is another athlete who has really discovered the joy of hard work in practice and went 6/6 best times, including an 18-second improvement in her 500 Free. Her standout swim was her 200 IM, where she took her vastly improved butterfly and capitalized on it to chop 9 seconds off her previous best and just miss breaking the 3:00 mark.

Well done, all AG2 athletes!

Senior Prep

The SR Prep athletes came to race! It was awesome to see all their hard work at practice show up in the pool at the meet. We had a number of fast swims throughout the weekend highlighted with multiple new champs cuts (and three first cuts of the year), many new letter cuts (highlighted by AAAA relay and AAAA individual swims), and many best times. Great job to all the swimmers!!! Excited to see the success continue through the AGI Meet and Champs Season. Standout Swims of the Meet:

  • Lucy Broyles had a great meet with some strong time drops in all her events. Her standout event was her 100 Free where she kept her stroke long and dropped more than 4 seconds in the event.
  • Kamilla Bugaitsova crushed all six events with some awesome swimming all weekend long (and a smile on her face). Her standout swim was her 500 Free where she dropped almost 5 seconds in the event and picked up her Champs Cut!!!
  • Caden Grey had a very strong showing at the meet this past weekend with some solid time drops. His standout swim was his 200 Free, where he training showed through with a very strong back 100 half and a strong race into the finish for a 6-second drop.
  • Kumail Mukadam had a great weekend of swimming with time drops in four swims. His standout swim was easily his 200 Breast where he dropped an awesome 15 seconds by keeping his stroke long and holding onto that strong technique throughout the swim.
  • Grace Zhang had an awesome meet weekend with time drops in four events. She crushed her 200 IM dropping more than 7 seconds and really showed the improvements she has been working on in practice for all four strokes.

Great Job to all the SR Prep athletes.
