Wave Scores Big at Regionals & SSDL Champs!
Age Group Regionals & SSDL Nation Meet Recaps
This year, due to the King County Aquatic Center hosting NCAA Div 1 Women's Champs, Age Group Regionals had to move to Boise. Due to size restrictions, Wave decided to attend two different meets: Age Group Regionals in Boise (featuring teams from 7 states) and the first-ever SwimStrong Dryland Nation Champs in Indiana (featuring teams from across the country). At both meets, Wave excelled. At Regionals, Sophia Gorveatt won all six of her races to lead the team to 4th (out of 59 scoring teams). At SSDL, Wave was led to a Top 6 finish by Olivia Henaire and Jaiden Sreenivasan, who both earned 2nd place for the High Point Award! Way to go, Wave!
Age Group Regionals
The Senior Prep and Senior 1 swimmers did a fantastic job of leading our team as the oldest swimmers at the Northwest Age Group Championships. The groups did a fantastic job of demonstrating meet etiquette to our younger swimmers by showing up on time, getting in on time for warm ups, and taking advantage of warm up and warm down before and after their races. For their efforts they were rewarded with some amazing swims, lots of best times, and a ton of hardware. It was very exciting to see them all so excited getting their medals and seeing them so pleased after a great swim.
The AG1 and AG2 swimmers responded to the older swimmers’ leadership with a boatload of excellent swims, big time drops, huge relay swims, and several kids getting to stand on the podium in Finals for Top 3 finishes. I had an absolute blast over the weekend working with all these swimmers and am excited to see what they can do moving forward!
-
Hayley Chou had several excellent swims with best times or right at her best times. Her highlight was her 100 Free time trial where she blasted her way to a -1.5-second drop with excellent turns and breakouts.
-
Berit Dunn came with an injured knee that prevented her from racing any of her best stroke, breaststroke, but that didn’t stop her! Instead, she proved she’s also a great flyer, scoring in both the 50 and 100 Fly. Her best race was the 100 Fly, where she knocked more than 3 seconds off in Prelims, then came back for Finals and cut off another 4 seconds, moving up two places and earning an A time!
-
Joseph Foster had an amazing meet turning in best times in all of his events. He swam an incredible 200 Fly starting out strong, building his way through the middle, then finishing like a champion earning himself a huge 12-second drop in the event.
-
Sophia Gorveatt had an absolutely unforgettable weekend of swimming. She swam one of the toughest schedules of events possible and was triumphant winning all six events. She was excited after each win but was always ready for the next. Her most exciting one was also her last as she had an incredible 200 Free racing hard all the way to the finish to give her the final win and getting as close as possible to finally breaking the 2:00 barrier going 2:00.00!
-
Blakely Hansen had a fabulous meet as our youngest swimmer, finishing 9th twice and some fabulous swims. Her best race was her 200 IM where she exhibited her mastery of all four strokes and dropped almost 5 seconds.
-
Vivian Hu was an absolute monster for Wave, placing Top 8 in all her races, earning five best times (and missing a 6th by only 3 tenths) and three new motivational cuts. Her strongest race was her 100 Fly as she shattered the 1:20 mark, going 1:17 and earning the silver medal.
-
Haim Jung was a beast in the pool with four best times and scoring twice. His biggest swim came in the 50 Breast where he finally beat the :40 barrier to earn a bronze medal and a AA time.
-
Yeim Jung came to cheer his older brother but also became a key member of both 10&U boys relays, and swam a key leg in our 2nd place 200 Free Relay.
-
Eva Kalicinski has worked very hard in practice and it showed up big in her races as she destroyed her best time in all five races and won two bronze medals. Her top race was her 100 Breast. She dropped 1.7 seconds in Prelims then came back for Finals and held off the competition and dropped another 2 seconds to break 1:20 for the first time!
-
Lingyi Li swam right at her best times all weekend long, scoring in three races. Her best race was her 50 Free in Finals where, after being disappointed with her Prelims swim, she returned with her game face on, slashed 0.5 off her Prelims time to earn a new best time and score for Wave.
-
Yihan Li put up strong showings in all of her races, achieving several best times and qualifying for finals in three events. She was on a mission to finally go under :27 in her 50 free. She had a strong prelims swim just barely missing going under but earning herself a spot in finals. She turned on the jets in finals to break through that barrier going 26.95.
-
Jonathan Liu showed up ready to swim fast and that is exactly what he did. He had some great performances, going best times in all four events. His standout was the 100 Free where he had a huge 2-second drop in prelims then cementing that time by going right at it again in finals later that evening.
-
Olivia Liu took on a challenging meet schedule swimming some very tough events and doing an excellent job in putting up some great swims. She had a strong 50 Breast going right at her time in prelims but knew she could do more. She took advantage of her second chance at the event, turning in a new best time in finals.

Maxim Malinovskyi had a very solid meet turning in best times in multiple events. He got off to a great start kicking things off with a very strong swim in the 200 Fly, dropping 7 seconds.
-
Beatrix Pressman earned three best times in her four races, but her best race might have been the one where she didn’t get a best time, the 100 Fly. She swam a gritty race, holding her stroke together, and scoring in the Top 8.
-
Leo Steijn was an absolute stud all weekend, not only earning best times every time he dove in but scoring in all six races. His studliest swim came in Finals in the 200 IM. In 4th at the halfway point, he sprinted the entire breaststroke leg to move into 2nd then held off the other swimmers, not letting them pass him to hold onto the silver medal!
-
Han Sun was on fire all weekend making finals in all six events. He turned in solid swims in finals, often moving up a spot and earning himself two podium finishes. His most impressive race was the 200 Breast where, after a strong prelims swim, he dialed it in for finals getting out even faster then holding on just as well to give himself a 3-second drop and a bronze medal.
-
Vedah Tuladhar had a very solid meet going right at her best time or better in all of her races. She saved her best race for last as she finished the meet by crushing it in the 50 Back. She had great tempo and kick the whole way resulting in a 1-second drop.
-
Aditeya Verma has kicked up his efforts in workout to a whole new level and it really showed at Regionals as he went six-for-six and two bronze medals in his fly. His most impressive swim, however, might have been his 50 Free where he has been trying for some time to go under :30. He did easily, going a low :29 in both Prelims and Finals.
-
Alex Wang was a big-time points scorer for Wave, finishing Top 5 in all six races and winning gold in both the backstroke races. His best swim, however, was his 200 Free where he went out fast and hung on to drop almost 1 second and pick up the bronze medal.
-
Natalie Whitbeck started the meet off very strong with her 100 Back with excellent turnover and nailing her turns for a 2.2-second drop. She also had outstanding legs in both relays, helping them to bronze medals.
-
Owen Wilson made Finals in both his fly races and showed real grit in Finals both times by going notably faster than he had in Prelims. Way to race, Owen!
-
Arjun Yadav had a very fun time at the meet turning in fast swim after fast swim and going best times in all his events. He absolutely crushed it in his 200 Breast. He executed the race strategy exactly as planned then sprinted his way to the finish to give himself a monster 5-second drop.
-
Andy Yang turned in solid swim after solid swim all weekend. He swam a tough order of events but was able to continually rise to the challenge and turn in great swims. He had a very strong swim in the 100 Breast going right at his time in prelims and getting a spot in finals. He did an excellent job of racing in finals moving up a spot and going a hare faster than his morning time.
-
Kenshin Yokoyama had an outstanding meet with four new best times. His biggest swim came in Time Trials, where he was trying to break :32 for the first time in the 50 Free. He nailed his start, turn, and breakouts, then accelerated into the wall to swim a :30!

SSDL Nation
What a fantastic week of fast swims in Indiana! It was fun to enjoy the hype, enjoy the fun, and knock out fast swims all weekend long. It was so great to see the swimmers prepared and racing really well in many different events. This was the first national meet for most of them. In every meet we have some ups and downs and the athletes' reaction to each situation is crucial to their success (in and out of the pool) and they did a great job managing their swims during the week. Many of them, especially the younger swimmers, made it back to finals in at least one event. Congrats for your results and for a strong season! Enjoy the highlights of each swimmer at the meet:
-
Alex Arlouski had a great weekend of swimming. His standout swim was his first event of the weekend with a 6.5-second drop for a 4th place finish in the 200 Free setting the tone for a fast weekend of swimming.
-
Oleg Arlouski had an excellent week of swims, going three best times and swimming right at his times in other three events. Among many great swims, his most exciting race was the 500 Free where he had an electrifying finish and won his Final to finish Top 5.

-
Deniz Cankaya dominated the weekend of swimming with best times all weekend long. One of his many highlights was his 400 IM. He has been working hard on fixing a legality of his fly and it paid off this weekend with legal swims and fast splits in both his IMs for the front of the swim and a 1st place finish in his 400. This shows what working on things can really do between meets.
