Wave Swimmers Dominate Across the Sound!
BISC Bob Miller Distance & Sprint Classic Meet Recap
Wave Aquatics’ Select Team made the trip across Puget Sound to Bainbridge Island for an exciting two-day meet. Day 1 featured the distance events — 500 Free, 400 IM, and 1650 Free — while Day 2 turned up the speed with sprints: 50s for the 12 & Unders and 100s for the 13 & Overs. The team delivered a ferry load of best times, new motivational cuts, and plenty of Champs qualifications. Leading the charge was Remy Kalicinski, who went a perfect 5/5 in earning B times. Way to go, Wave!
Age Group 1
We had a spooky great meet weekend coming off Halloween. The hard work in practice and the extra sugar really kicked in the right way for a great weekend of some awesome swimming and time drops. Great job to the whole group and congrats on a great weekend of swimming. And thanks for all the taxes!
Distance Day Highlights:
- Remy Kalicisnki completed his first-ever 500 Free. He crushed it with some great swimming and really held strong on his fundamentals like hitting his flip turns, kicking out, and keeping his stroke long. Great swimming!!!
- Jennifer Ji also completed her first-ever 500 Free and did an awesome job. She did an amazing job of pacing for her first swim in the event keeping her average 100 consistent throughout for an awesome time. Nice Work!!!
- Maya Razdan completed her very first 500 Free too and crushed it. She was able to speed up over the last 150 and bring the swim home is a very strong sub 7:30 time. She also did a great job of working her kick outs throughout the race. Congrats!!!
Sprint Day Highlights:
- Felix Henaire had a great weekend of sprinting and his improvement in focus and working in practice really showed up with some great sprints. His standout swim was his 50 Free to kick off the meet where he nailed his turn for a great swim and a 4-second time drop.
- Mo Chen crushed the weekend with several best times throughout the weekend and his commitment to kicking hard really showed up in all four of his strokes. His standout swim was his 50 Fly, where he kept his arms smooth and worked his kick for a 2-second drop.
- Cloris Cui had a great meet with many great swims throughout Sunday. Her standout swim was her 50 Free, where she kept her stroke long and tempo up and dropped more than a second.
Age Group 2
We had one of the best meets this group has ever had, with everyone dropping big chunks of time and many swimmers going 5/5 best times. We had 10 swimmers break the :30 in the 50 Free for the first time and 3 swimmers break the :30 in the 50 Fly for the first time. A big shout out to all our first-time 1650 Swimmers: Owen Wilson, Max Sun, Anna Ventura, Berit Dunn, Finley Wiegand, and Lingyi Li!
Distance Day Highlights:
- Norah Braun was our only repeat swimmer in the 1650, and holy smokes did she come through, dropping 77 seconds with a well-paced swim and superb finish! She was one of our many 5/5 swimmers for the weekend!
- Aman Bhatt has been training exceptionally well, and it showed as he went 5/5. His best swim was his 400 IM where he dropped 19 seconds, crushing his back half, and earning his PNS Champs cut in the process!
Sprint Day Highlights:
- Ira Joshi trains very hard day in and day out, and it really showed as she went 4/4 and had a great first-time 500 Free. Her best swim was her 50 Fly where she dropped more than 5 seconds. Her stroke strength is really coming on, and her butterfly is quickly turning into her best stroke!
- Eva Kalicinski also went 5/5, including an AA time in her 50 Breast. She’s worked very hard at her middle-distance freestyle and what a payoff! She slashed almost 51 seconds off her time, winning the event handily and almost breaking 6:00!
- Lingyi Li not only swam her first-ever 1650, but she also went 4/4 in her other events and won two of them. Her top swim was her 50 Free where she dropped more than a second to go a 26.57 and easily picked up a new AAA time as well as make the Wave Top 16!
- Dan Sun has had 100% attendance this fall, and all those miles of swimming resulted in a heck of a meet! He went 5/5, including a 21.55-second drop in his 400 IM. His highlight swim, however, was his 50 Breast where he used his smokin’ hot pull-shoot to easily break the :40 for the first time!
Senior Prep
The SR Prep Group just came off a very hard week of practice heading into the BISC Meet and were poised for some scary fast swims. The group stepped it up and crushed the weekend with some amazing swims and time drops. I am very excited to see where the group is at and excited for the group to head into AGI’s.
Distance Day Highlights:
- Jonathan Lui had a great 500 Free in his last-ever 12&U Meet. He went after the swim with some aggressive splits (going out in 1:00 on the first 100) and hung on strong for almost a minute time drop. Great Work!!!
- Irene Qu had an amazing 400 IM where her work on improving her endurance continues to shine through with some great splits throughout the race. Her work on her butterfly also showed through with a strong, smooth start to the swim for a big time drop and breaking the 5:00 mark.
- Dami Jung doesn’t always swim distance, but when she does, she never disappoints. She took off 42 seconds in her mile this weekend with some quality splits and some great turns throughout the swim. Way to go!!!
Sprint Day Highlights:
- Aaron Chakraborty came to work this weekend and knocked out all four of his 100s. His standout swim was his 100 Free where he went out, worked the whole race perfectly, and was broke 1:00 for the very first time. Amazing work!!!
- Abby Gray had an amazing weekend of swimming. She swam with confidence, and it showed in all four strokes. Her standout swim was her nearly 3-second drop in her 50 Fly, where her commitment to working on FlyDay Fridays showed up in her stroke. Great work!!!
- Arjun Yadav had an awesome meet also, knocking off time in all his events. His standout was also his 100 Free to kick off the meet, as he raced his first ever sub 1:00 in the 100 Free. He has been crushing it at practice, and it showed up in all his swims. Amazing!!!
Senior 1
We had 22 swimmers make the perilous journey across the Puget Sound to Bainbridge Island. While we faced some rough seas getting to the facility, once we arrived it was nothing but smooth sailing for the weekend. We started the meet off with some stellar distance swims and kept rolling from there, turning in a fantastic day of sprints as well. This group has been working incredibly hard, and we went into the meet on essentially no rest. Everyone did a good job of stepping up and swimming their hardest. We had a big focus on race execution and doing the little things in races that will help be fast. They did a fantastic job of that and were really dialed in from start to finish. I am excited to see what they can do once we get to our champs meets and swim rested.
Highlights:
- Roman Byleykh has established himself as a lover of the distance events. He pushes himself at practice, always working hard towards lowering the pace he can hold during the longer races and sets. That all paid off in a huge way at the meet. He turned in a fabulous swim in the 1650 Free. He took it out super strong, found his pace right away, and continued to push himself all the way to the end, never letting himself fall off for even a single 50. For all his efforts, he was rewarded with a huge 58-second drop and his first time under 17:00 in the event.
- Victor Lyakhovitski has really started to pick up his training. He has been pushing himself harder in practice and has been going faster on sets. He likes to swim the short races but proved he can mix it up in the longer races as well. In his first event—the 400 IM—he produced a huge, 1:00+ drop by using a smooth stroke on the fly, great tempo and kick on back, huge pullouts, and a solid sprint to the finish. He’s eager to go even faster in the event.
- Andy Yang is willing to take on any challenge at practice. He will swim all the strokes without any complaints and takes on IM sets like they’re breakfast cereals. His training has turned him into a force to be reckoned with in the 400 IM. He controlled himself the first 100 by not over swimming the fly leg, kept up a solid tempo and kick on his back, fired off an aggressive breast leg, then had a furious sprint to the finish to give himself a huge 12-second drop.
- Arya Bhatt is a prime example of doing things the right way and having them pay off. He has been methodically working at practice to increase his endurance so that his back half of the 100s can improve. From this hard work he went a perfect 4/4 on best times in 100s. His butterfly speed has always been strong, but he was stuck going right at 1:00 in the 100. He is stuck no more! He turned in an incredible second 50 to finally break through the barrier and go :59 for the first time.
- Ross Gawthrop does a fantastic job of showing up to practice and always asking what he can work on to get better. Between his positive mindset and coachable attitude, he has seen some very strong improvements. After getting DQd the last time out, he was on a mission in the 100 Fly. He had a very strong first 50 showing his strength and speed in the stroke, he then gutted out a strong and legal second 50 to give himself a solid 5-second drop.
- Edi Vasilescu would like to be a sprinter, so he decided to use this meet as an opportunity to show off that skillset. He took full advantage of getting his chance to race some 100s and went best times in all three. He has been doing some serious butterfly work and that really paid off. He got off to a super-fast start, then kept his stroke long and his tempo up the second 50. He ended up with a huge 3-second drop and broke 1:00 for the first time, going from 1:02 straight to :58. After the race he asked if he was a sprinter now; only future fast times will tell.
Senior Epic
Senior Epic swimmers swam four events at the meet. Last week, we ended the heaviest block of training of our swim program, and I was glad to see our group's results on Meet Mobile. We had lots of fast swims where they were only a second or less off their best times, many new personal bests and two new AAA Times achieved.
Highlights:
- Logan Downing had a great weekend and went three new best times. His outstanding swim was the 100 Fly where he felt strong and dropped half a second from his previous time.
- Daniel Chen swam only one day and crushed it! He swam right at his times in two events and went a personal best in the 100 Fly by dropping 1.22 seconds and earning a new A Time.
- Ani Purkayastha swam her first meet since the spring season. She was very happy with her swim and how she felt in the water in the 100 Free. She has been recovering from an injury and, after months of treatment, she finally felt confident to race again. Welcome back, Ani!
- Adrian Juco had a rough start where he was DQ’d in the 400 IM on day one, but he bounced back on day two and had a strong 100 Fly where he was able to drop half a second in his race.
- Anton Mazepa started off his meet with a very solid 1650 Free on the first day. He went out fast and was able to hold his pace for the entire mile, finishing strong and going only 12 seconds off his tapered time.
