Wave Shines at Age Group Champs with Record-Breaking Performances!
PNS 14&U Age Group Championship Meet Recap
For the first time in about two decades, Wave finished in the Top 3 at Age Group Champs (out of 32 teams), clinching the final podium spot in the next-to-last race of the day. The difference-maker was our depth in relays, as Wave scored critical points in every relay event. Huge kudos to all our relay-only swimmers, whose efforts were essential to this historic result!
Individually, our team was led by an outstanding performance from Ellen Feng, who won the 50 Back and earned her first Futures cut in the 50 Fly—breaking both the 13–14 Girls and Open Women’s team records and climbing to 8th in the nation. She also finished as Wave’s High Point Girl with 111 points. Close behind was Aditeya Verma, our Boys’ High Point winner with 109 points. Special recognition goes to Caden Gray, who earned his first Sectionals cut while setting a new team record in the 50 Breast. Additionally, Olivia Henaire, Irene Qu, and Dami Jung each picked up their first Sectionals cuts. Congratulations to all 112 Wave swimmers who competed (with 68 swimmers scoring points) and made this a truly memorable meet!

Age Group 2
AG2 sent 27 swimmers to Champs, and our hard work truly paid off. The group delivered a wave of best times, new cuts, and outstanding performances in relays and Finals. Leading the way was Aditeya Verma, who scored an impressive 109 points to top all Wave boys. Special recognition goes to Max Sun and Owen Wilson, whose clutch swims in the B Final of the 100 IM were the clinching points to propel Wave to our 3rd place finish!
- Berit Dunn and Eva Kalacinski both had many great races. The best one was their 200 Breast. Both had dropped 4 seconds in Prelims to qualify for the A Final. They went head-to-head, battling not only each other but also running opponents down to drop another 5+ seconds, move up places, and make Wave’s Top 16 list for the event. Eva also broke 1:00 in her 100 Free for the first time, going 59.99! Berit scored 57 points, and Eva scored 61 points for Wave.
- Aman Bhatt dropped time in all five races, with his standout swim being his 200 IM. He was quick in his butterfly, setting an excellent tempo that he maintained through his backstroke, then really pushed his breaststroke leg. He ended up with an astonishing 34-second drop, breaking the 3:00 barrier by 16 seconds!
- Norah Braun qualified for her first-ever Finals swim, crushing her previous best in the 200 Breast by attacking her race early in the front half, then using great technique in the back half to hang on to score 13th. She also placed 9th in her 1650. Norah scored 13 points for Wave.
- Katelyn Chen saved her best race for last. Her 100 IM was a spectacular exhibit of staying focused and trusting yourself. She took each stroke out fast and hard and overcame a rough back-to-breast turn to run her opponents down on the second 50 and drop 12 seconds.
- Addy Clarke turned in the best meet of her AG2 career, dropping time whenever she dove in and making it difficult to single out a standout swim. My favorite was her 200 Back, her last race of the meet. She committed herself mentally to executing her strategy and not backing away from putting all her effort into her breakouts and stroke. She not only dropped time, but she also moved up to qualify for the B Final. Addy scored 37.5 points for Wave.
- Blakely Hansen had several great swims, with her most exciting being her 100 Breast. She showed no fear, challenging herself on her first 50, then staying strong on length three before bringing it home on the last 25 for a 3-second drop. Blakely scored 36.5 points for Wave.
- Vivian Hu had an excellent meet, going 5/6 best times and swimming faster in Finals than in Prelims, as well as moving up places. Her standout event was her 50 Back. She has worked very hard to master her technique, and it showed. In Prelims, she went from a :33 to a :31.8, then came back in Finals to drop her time to a 31.3 and move up one place. Vivian scored 20 points for Wave.
- Elaina Jiang was right on her best times or improved them on every swim. Her standout swim was her 50 Breast in Prelims where she swam very aggressively with her recovery into her glide, allowing her to drop enough time to qualify for Finals. She swam almost as fast in Finals and held onto her seeded position to score. Elaina scored 19.5 points for Wave.
- Haim Jung had an amazing 200 IM, where he went out quick and loose in his fly and back legs, then sprinted his breast and free legs to crush the 3:00 barrier and drop more than 10 seconds.
- Avery Lee qualified in her breaststroke, but it was her 50 Free that was her standout swim. She had just broken the :30 for the first time in November. At Champs, she used outstanding breakouts to come up with smokin’ hot speed on both lengths and easily pick up her first :28.
- Lingyi Li had multiple standout swims. Her finest was her swim in the B Final of the 50 Fly, where she blasted out into the lead on the first stroke and never looked back, winning easily and swimming a half second faster than in Prelims. Lingyi scored 77 points for Wave.
- Rinat Maksyutov had several individual races, but his finest swim came in the 400 Medley Relay, where he swam the 100 Fly leg, and his aggressive attitude helped his relay team swim way below their entry time (an aggregation of their best times before Champs).
- Benji Ovendale did not know the word “slow” at this meet! In all three races, he showed improved stroke technique, especially his breakouts, and a mindset to push himself beyond his best, dropping big time in each. His standout swim was his 100 Back, in which he took out the opening 25 fast and never looked back to drop 3 seconds.
- Siena Stahlkopf smashed all three races as well as her relay swim, so picking a standout swim is a challenge. Her best race was probably her 100 Free. She really challenged herself, taking it out fast the way we practice, working her turns and breakouts, and destroying her previous best to go a 1:06.
- Clara Stevenson finaled in the 200 Fly and dropped 10 seconds in her 400 IM. Her standout swim, however, was her aggressive 100 Free where she attacked the race right from the get-go to destroy her previous time by more than 4 seconds and put her within shouting distance of breaking the 1:00 mark in the near future. Clara scored 1 point for Wave.
- Dan Sun took off on his 400 IM and never looked back. His butterfly was a swim of beauty: smooth, quick, relaxed. He pushed his backstroke, holding a strong tempo, built up his breaststroke, then smoked his freestyle to end up with a big-time 6-second drop. Dan scored 5 points for Wave.
- Max Sun shone huge in his 100 Free swims. In Prelims, he crushed the 1:00 mark, going a :58 and earning a spot in the B Final, where he repeated the feat. He was aggressive and attacked every length on every 100, just like he does in practice. He also swam the 100 Free in both 400 relays and easily broke the 1:00 with both of his splits. Max scored 62.5 points for Wave.
- Anna Ventura had a fantastic 200 Fly in Prelims, holding her stroke together beautifully to drop 5 seconds, break the 2:40, and earn a spot in the B Finals. There, she challenged herself and was aggressive throughout the 200, never letting her stroke break down. She dropped 6 more seconds and moved up three places to score big points for Wave. Anna scored 6 points for Wave.
- Aditeya Verma scored in all his events and made the A Final in five of them while winning the B Final in his sixth event. He saved his best for last in the final race of the day, the 100 IM. Exhausted and not wanting to race, he got on the blocks anyways and left everything in the pool. He had dropped 2 seconds in Prelims, and in Finals, he dropped 3 more seconds, or 5 seconds total, and moved up three places to help Wave secure the 3rd place trophy. Aditeya scored 109 points for Wave.
- Alex Wang had several great races, with his standout swim coming in the 500 Free. He challenged his tempo the entire race, even splitting all the middle 50s, then racing hard the last 150 to shatter his previous best time by 13 seconds, and cruised easily past the 6:00 mark for the first time. Alex scored 31 points for Wave.
- Natalie Whitbeck had an amazing 50 Free time trial, minimizing her breathing, kicking strong, and breaking out with power to go under the :30 mark for the first time.
- Finley Wiegand was sick the first two days (which no one knew at the time) yet was right on her best time in all her events and made the B Final twice. Her best swim was her 100 Free in Finals where she gave her all to drop 0.4 from her Prelims swim and move up one place. Finley scored 18.5 points for Wave.
- Owen Wilson had an excellent 100 Back. He broke the 1:10 mark in Prelims for the first time, utilizing his amazing underwater dolphins on every length to earn a place in the B Final. In Finals, he was even more aggressive, moving up two places and dropping another 3 seconds to end with a 1:06. Owen scored 60 points for Wave.
- Andy Wu had two huge relay lead-off swims where he swam lifetime bests in his 50 Back and 50 Free. His standout swim was his 200 Back where he hit his race strategy spot on and used excellent breakouts on every turn to drop nearly 5 seconds. Andy scored 13.5 points for Wave.
- Kenshin Yokoyama blasted off the blocks in his 50 Fly, shocked the competition with his aggressive speed and super strong kick to earn a place in the B Final with his first :31. He moved up three places from his seed time to punch his ticket to Finals. Kenshin scored 1 point for Wave.
- Harvey Zhang had several best times and three Finals swims, with his standout swim being his 100 IM at the end of the meet. He had dropped 2.6 seconds in Prelims, then came back late on Sunday night and swam more aggressively with his butterfly leg to drop an additional 1.5 seconds off his entry time to score big points. Harvey scored 40 points for Wave.

Senior 1
Senior 1 had 12 swimmers compete at Champs. It was a weekend filled with absolutely incredible swimming from everyone who participated. This group has worked so hard this season, and it was an absolute blast watching them crush swim after swim and see the payoff from all their efforts. We finished the meet with three individual AAAA times, two new Sectionals cuts, two new Senior Zones qualifiers, and a team record. The 14-year-old swimmers in the group have set the stage well for the upcoming Senior Champs.
- Kamilla Bugaitsova had a fantastic meet, dropping time in several events. She came into the meet with one big mission: to finally break 1:00 in the 100 Free; she's done it twice in the first 100 of her 200 but never in the race by itself. She made an absolute statement, getting out to a great start and closing the final 25 to absolutely shatter the barrier to go 58.05, skipping 59 completely. Kamilla scored 9 points for Wave.
- Roman Byelykh loves to swim long distances and train for those. That training proved to be incredibly valuable as he turned in best times in all his swims and was able to fight through racing seven times on Saturday alone! He was able to find the pace right away in his 1650 Free, then built his way through the middle of the race before sprinting to the finish the final 150 to give him a solid 11-second drop and his first individual AAAA time. Roman scored 87 points for Wave.
- Lola Cheng decided to make her final meet of the season a big one. She turned in some stellar swims and produced time drops in half of her events. He parlayed this work ethic into a perfect weekend going best times in all his events. He is part of the breaststroke group at practice and made sure that work paid off. He turned in an amazing 200 Breast, taking it out fast, holding strong through the middle 100, then turning up the tempo to sprint home to give himself a huge 2-second drop.
- Evan Deng has put in incredible work this season and has seen improvement across the board from his sprint events all the way to his middle-distance races. He used all that hard work to join the All Best Times Club. He turned in an impressive swim in the 50 Breast prelims, blasting his way to a new best time. He was not done there, though, as he was able to turn up the intensity even more during finals, resulting in another drop and his first individual AAAA time. Evan scored 32 points for Wave.
- Caden Gray was absolutely locked in for the weekend. He had incredible intensity throughout the entire weekend and turned in some absolutely incredible swims. He had a very methodical swim in the 200 Breast that produced some great results. He used his early speed in the first 50, then dialed it in to go the same split the next three 50s, giving him a 4-second drop, his sectionals cut, and a 3rd place finish. Caden scored 82 points for Wave.
- Nora Herman has had a splendid season of training, and that really showed in her meet performance as she turned in several best times. She was incredibly worried about the 200 Fly going into the meet. When it came time to race, she let all her doubts go out the window and just swam. This worked like a charm as she went out a best 100 time, then held on well the back 100 to give her a 3-second drop and qualify her for Finals. In Finals, she repeated by going out a best time and was able to stay a little stronger down the stretch to give her another small drop on the day. Nora scored 12 points for Wave.
- Victor Lyakhovitski made up his mind that he was going to crush it at champs, and that is precisely what he did. He had best times in all his swims over the weekend. His backstroke events were where he really hit his stride, making finals in all three distances. His standout race among them was the 50 Back. He had a strong start, fast turn, and great underwaters off the wall to break :26 for the first time and finish in 2nd place. Victor scored 52 points for Wave.
- Lainey Meyer has been on a remarkable trajectory this season, and she just continued down that same path at champs. She made the most of her swims, going best times in all but one race. She implemented a very difficult strategy in the 200 Back that paid off in a big way. She was controlled off the start, which allowed her to hit the exact pace in the middle 100, then blast her final 50 to negative split the race, drop 3 seconds, and get her first Senior Champs cut. Lainey scored 6.5 points for Wave.
- Lasya Viswandham decided to focus primarily on her sprint events for the weekend and take on the longer events at a later time. The strategy paid off as she was right on her best time or better in all her races. She has been working hard on stretching out in her butterfly. She did a great job, using high DPS and strong dolphin kicks to deliver a significant drop in the 50 and nearly break the 28-second mark for the first time, qualifying for Finals. She was able to duplicate those results in Finals. Lasya scored 15.5 points for Wave.
- Piper Wiegand has trained great all season and is a ferocious competitor. She had her game face on all weekend in route to best times in all her races. She would save the fireworks for the final swim of the meet. After going 2:00 and finishing 9th in Prelims of the 200 Free, she was on a mission in Finals. She more than accomplished that mission as she pushed herself from the very start taking it out incredibly fast then even splitting the back 100 to absolutely destroy the 2:00 barrier, going 1:57 skipping 1:59 and 1:58 all together. Piper scored 87 points for Wave.
- Andy Yang was ready for a big meet and some big swims and that is exactly what happened as he joined the All Best Times Club. He is an incredibly versatile swimmer and can throw down in all four strokes across many distances. This was made evident in his 400 IM. He put down a best 100 fly time to start, attacked the back, held steady through the breast, and turned on the jets in the free. He swam his way to an amazing 10-second drop and 4th place finish overall. Andy scored 68 points for Wave.
