Wave Winter Invitational Meet Recap

Wave kicked off the 2026 season in exciting fashion with a strong team meet at Juanita, made even more memorable by racing off the new starting blocks for the first time in competition. The meet was filled with breakthrough swims across the roster, as many athletes logged first-time—or first-in-a-long-while—events and posted new Champs qualifying times along with fresh USS Motivational cuts. Leading the charge was Harvey Zhang, who delivered a standout performance by breaking two 10&U Boys team records in the 200 Breast and the 400 IM, setting the tone for a promising year ahead.

Black Group

This was a first meet for many of the swimmers and families in Black Group, but they did a great job of following the guidelines, which helped make the meet run smoothly. Thank you to the parents who helped with staging as well as Coach Maya, Coach Denise, and Kyla (our RAC deck manager) who volunteered to assist on Saturday. Thank you as well to all the families who arrived on time and had their E/H/L information written out on their swimmer in advance. All these things made for a positive meet experience for the swimmers.

A Group

  • Orko Chakraborty had an excellent meet with some improved strokes, a first-time swim in the 100 Back and an excellent job of using his kick on his 50 Free and 50 Back races.
  • Clara Huang also swam the 100 Back for the first time, and we were also very excited to see the improvements in her 100 IM, 100 Free, and 25 Breast. She is an excellent listener and worker at practice so positive meet results like this are fun to see.
  • Ryan Jin showed lots of improvement in his 100 Free, completed his first 25 Fly, and had several other strong races. He is quietly working to up his game at practices and it shows.
  • Rachel Peng swam her first meet with Wave, and we were really happy to get to see her race. Lots of good experience for her, and she was able to complete five of six races legally, which is awesome.
  • Katherine Wu swam her first 100 Breast and did an awesome job with it at this meet. She also showed lots of improvements in her other strokes, including a very strong 100 IM. She puts in a good effort at practice and is very consistent.

B Group

  • Naman Vora had some fabulous swims including strong showings in his 25 Back, 50 Back, and a first-time swim in the 25 Fly.
  • Ge Song had two first swims—25 Fly and 50 Back—plus some other really great races including a very strong 25 Free.
  • Lily Smyth had two much improved races in her 50 Free and 50 Back, using her strong kick to power her through those. As she continues to learn to use her legs, she’ll keep getting better and better in the pool.
  • Aryan Siravuri had two first-time swims in the 25 Breast and 25 Fly as well as showing significant improvements in his freestyle and backstroke races. He does a great job of listening and working at practice, so we are happy to mention him here.
  • Anaisha Goela had a first-time swim in the 25 Breast, and several swims showing the improvements she’s been working through at practices.

White Group

White Group's performance was beyond reason. We dropped a total of 1,169.79 seconds in our races, creating 49 new B times and 5 new BB times. They made some monster Waves!

A Group

  • Naomi Lynn had massive improvements. She dropped 17.89 seconds in her 100 Back to get a new BB. She dropped 24.20 seconds in her 100 Breast to get a new B. She improved in every race and made another new B time in her 50 Breast. Impressive!
  • William MacDonald dropped an unreasonable amount. He dropped 12.93 seconds in his 100 Breast to get a new B time. He also dropped 17.44 seconds in his 100 Free to get a new B time. Plus, he also got a new B time in his 50 Breast. Keep up the good work!
  • Enya Zhu had the biggest drop in White Group when she slashed 31.51 seconds off her 100 Breast time. She dropped 14.45 seconds in her 100 Back. She also had best times in her 100 Free and 50 Breast. She proved she is working hard.
  • Kaitlyn Spooner had a great meet. She made a new BB time in her 50 Back. She also made a new BB time in her 100 Free with a time of 1:20.74. I can't wait to see her break 1:20. Nice job!
  • Tony Chen had an amazing meet. He dropped 29.93 seconds in his 200 IM to get a new B time. He dropped 10.16 seconds in his 100 Breast to get a new B time. Plus, he dropped 8.57 seconds in his 100 Back to get another new B time. Congratulations.

B Group

  • Daniel Zhovtobriukh earned his B cap in the 50 Breast by improving 3.48 seconds. He improved in every race dropping 20.63 seconds in his 100 Back, 11.03 seconds in his 100 IM and 9.48 seconds in his 100 free. Nice job!
  • Keira Lydick earned her B cap in the 50 Breast. She had 100% best times including the second largest drop in White group with a 28.48-second improvement in her 100 Back. Incredible!
  • Simaya Gupta is on a streak. Her workouts have improved and the times show it. She dropped 23.57 seconds in her 100 IM. She improved 12.53 seconds in her 100 Free and 5.27 seconds in her 50 Breast. Keep it up!
  • Amelia Wang earned her B cap by dropping 5.30 seconds in her 50 Back. She had zero disqualifications and dropped 4.68 seconds in her 100 Back. Outstanding!
  • Ishaan Talluri had an excellent meet. He improved 12.28 seconds in his 100 Free. He dropped 11.51 seconds in his 100 IM and improved 10.61 seconds in his 50 Breast. He had zero disqualifications. Perfect.

Purple Group

Purple Group put in some solid racing at the Wave Winter Invitational! Coming off a tough week of practice, we wanted the kids to show up ready to fight through their races. Throughout the weekend, the theme of “turn our brain off and race” came too; so many of the kids love to analyze the little details. By encouraging the kids to stop overthinking and trust their instincts, we saw them race with more confidence and less hesitation, which led to many great midseason times and performances. As a whole, Purple notched 13 new motivational times. Shoutout to Cayden Smith, as he got his first 11-12 "A" time in the 50 Free and Purple’s first "A" time of the new year!

A Group

  • Anika Arvan is a freestyler to her core. Going into the second half of the short course season, her focus was on the 50 and 100. We thought it'd be best to take a step back from sprinting all the time and shift her gaze to the 200 Free. In her race, she had a strong last 50 that helped her drop 14 seconds and win her heat!
  • Keshav Iyer spends a lot of time at practice focusing on his breaststroke; when those events didn't turn out the way he hoped, he needed to bounce back quickly in order to perform well in his other races—demonstrating his determination by setting personal bests in the other events. In his 200 IM, he had a strong back half propelling him to a 19-second drop! He’s been working on his starts, and a strong first 25 helped him drop a second and a half in his 50 Free.
  • Anuraag Fadnavis had an incredible first meet back from a collarbone injury that has sidelined him for a few months. Since coming back to practice in December, he’s worked hard and saw the payoff where he dropped a cumulative 19 seconds across three races! His standout swim was the 100 Breast. He used fast turns and strong underwater to drop 9.5 seconds.
  • Thomas Godbout had a great weekend in his freestyle events. He started with the 100 Free, where he had a strong third 25, dropping 2 seconds and nearly getting the B time. On Sunday, he swam his 200 like a true distance swimmer and built into a strong second 100, this time swimming his way to a B time!

B Group

  • Ilia Nedashkovskiy has been working on his backstroke all season. We joked on Saturday that he had been cursed in the 100 Breast because he’d been disqualified every time he swam it the fall. He finally broke the curse, and had a phenomenal race, jumping up 47 places from his seed! He had great open turns and made sure to touch with two hands at all times.
  • Maya Esko has worked hard in every practice since moving up from White Group. She never sits out, works hard during dryland, and is kind toward all her teammates. In her 100 Back, she had great turns and underwater dolphin kicks that fueled her to a 10-second drop!
  • Zoey Stark had a fantastic meet, with her standout swims being the 200 IM and 50 Breast. In practice we have placed an emphasis on IM turns, seeing as they play a large role in the success of an IM race; she executed great turns in her 200 IM and was able to transition between the four strokes with ease. In her 50 Breast, she had strong underwater pullouts that helped her finish the 50 at top speed.
  • Harper Floyd started the meet hot with a 16-second drop in her 50 Back. She had a great start that led into an amazing flip turn. She finished the 50, with strong flutter kicks and raced those around her to get the heat win!

High School

High School had some great swims for the first meet of the second half of the short course season. We as a group, primarily focused on events that haven’t been swum in a really long time, or events that weren’t our best. Everyone swam events that weren’t their best and did great! They should all feel accomplished. It was really hard to pick best swims here as there were so many!

A Group

  • Alvin Chang had some great swims! He dropped -2.50 in his 100 Breast. This is the first time he was able to really get his hips up for the majority of his 100. He learned that with this adjustment, he was able to race better. Going into his 200 Breast he was also able to drop -11.40 seconds. He also did better at getting his hips up in his butterfly, helping him drop -4.17 in his 50 Fly!
  • Eliot Amalo has been working really hard on fixing his technique for all his strokes, but especially his breast. He was able to walk into his 100 Breast and shave off -5.39 in just a few months. He was also able to drop -1.01 in his 50 Fly by working on faster hands and higher hips, and -6.74 in his 200 IM by working on all strokes and more efficient technique.
  • Arjun Bhate had some monster swims this weekend. He has been working on more power and strength between dryland and in the water and it shows! He had a -17.77 drop in his 200 Back and -1.36 in his 100 Free. His biggest feat was climbing out of the pool following his 500 Free and having a huge smile because he dropped -27.22 seconds.
  • Charlie Page is one of the harder workers in A Group. He comes to practice and is very attentive to what the mission of each set is and tries his best to accomplish each one. That effort earned him 5/6 time drops! -10.14 in his 200 Back, -5.45 in his 200 IM, -1.91 in his 50 Back, -5.30 in his 200 Free, and -5.05 in his 100 Back.

B Group

  • Michael Zhou is new to the High School group. Since arriving, he has worked really hard and shown tremendous effort in sets. Once he found out that he was swimming the 200 Fly, he instantly got super happy and worked on fixing everything possible for the best outcome. By doing all of that, he was able to drop -38.14 seconds. He was also able to drop -20.70 in his 200 Back! He had some strong races this weekend!
  • Diana Omusoru had a little time off over the holidays and when she came back, she was working harder than ever! She had 5/6 time drops! Her biggest and best accomplishment is the 50 Free as she dropped -10.16 seconds. She has been working on going fast! This is a weekly conversation. As soon as she got out of the pool, she had the biggest smile and said, “All I could think about was going fast and going through the wall on the finish.”
  • Tvesa Bansal had 4/6 time drops. She was working on strategy planning before she gets behind the block and executing it. She was able to drop -13.89 in her 200 Back, -22.93 in her 500 Free, -1.31 in her 200 Free, and -4.88 in her 100 Back.
  • Thomas Claux has been working on holding top end speed in his 50s and saw time drops in his 50 Free, 50 Breast, and 50 fly. He was also able to hold the back end in his 100s better and dropped-0.97 in his 100 Free for an AGI cut, and -4.15 in his 100 Fly.

Age Group 1

  • Kaito Falk showed up big time with multiple outstanding swims at this past meet. His best race was his 200 IM where he kept a consistent strong pace and held together solid technique. He has been turning up the heat in practice, and it paid off with a solid drop in every race.
  • Avni Garg has been working on perfecting her butterfly and staying long with her stroke. All this hard work paid off in her 100 Fly where she dropped 5 seconds. She also did a great job of keeping her energy up in her other races where she got three other new best times.
  • Hudson Porter always has a great attitude and race mentality when going into competitions. This helped him to drop in every event and race very strongly in two new events. His standout swim was his 50 Free, dropping almost a full second and snagging a new BB time.
  • Amelia Horng had one of her best meet performances with three new best times, a new B time, and her first BB time. She got her BB time in her 50 Breast by keeping a quick tempo and strong glide to drop more than 5 seconds!
  • Kevin Zhang crushed this meet with three new swims and three new best times! He is new to AG1 and has been pushing hard to keep up with the group and do his best. All this effort paid off when he earned his first BB time in his 50 Breast with a 3-second drop and fast finish!

Age Group 2

It was an awesome start to the year, with many swimmers doing events they’d never done before, or events they hadn’t swum in some time, even though we trained hard right through the met. Our 10-year-olds had some of the toughest weekends of everyone, with all swimming the 400 IM for the first time and at least one non-freestyle 200 for the first time. All those swims resulted in Wave Top 16 times! Our older swimmers also crushed it as we picked up many new Regionals and AGI cuts, as well as multiple new USS Motivational times.

  • Blakely Hansen swam all three stroke 200s with times that would earn her 11-12 motivational cuts. Her highlight was her 400 IM where she perfected our beginner strategy and turned in an outstanding back half. She ended up with the second fastest 400 IM in Wave history for a 10&Under, just 3 seconds off the record!
  • Maya Razdan swam the 200 Back and Breast as well as earning a BB time in her first-ever 200 IM. Her highlight was also the 400 IM, where she stayed strong and pushed through the difficulty of the race to earn the third fastest 400 IM in Wave history. She also would have earned 11-12 USS motivational times in her races!
  • Jennifer Ji raced nearly a mile total (1400 yards!), swimming all five 200s as well as the 400 IM. Her highlight was her first-ever 200 Fly that she took out a bit too fast but held her stroke together even on the final 50 when she was exhausted. Her final time was the second fastest in Wave history and just missed being an 11-12 BB time!
  • Harvey Zhang was only able to swim on Sunday, but he made the most of it, breaking the team record in the 400 IM by almost two minutes. His best swim, however, was his 200 Breast, where he used perfect pacing, descending his 50s and nearly negative splitting his race, breaking the team record in that race as well! His time just missed the 11-12 BB time!

Senior Prep

  • Maksim Nikitenko had a fantastic meet, racing strong and with confidence. He had an intense and focused training period leading up to the meet and crushed it when arriving for competition. His standout swim was his 500 Free where he dropped almost a minute and earned another A time!
  • Irene Qu dominated the meet this weekend with fast swims and multiple time drops. In practice she’s been pushing hard and challenging herself to stay strong throughout the set. This was apparent in all her races but especially her 500 Free where she paced it well and finished powerfully to drop 20 seconds.
  • Ethan Jin had a great meet, getting tons of new best times in his less swum events. His 50 Fly was absolutely excellent with a strong kick and aggressive tempo shaving off more than a second.
  • Norah Braun is one of the newbies to Sr Prep and has been crushing it with her attendance and practice effort. She raced hard this weekend, dropping in four events with good finishes and strong kicks. Her 100 Free was spectacular with a good tempo and drive she dropped more than 7 seconds.
  • Arjun Yadav had a strong meet performance with his time drops and meet performance. He is great at getting out and focusing on the race with a competitive spirit. This attitude and hard work earned him a 3-second drop in his 50 Back!

Senior 1

Senior 1 had 29 swimmers compete at the meet. We trained hard right up until the meet, even though they were tired the group stepped up and had some fantastic swims. A lot of the swimmers got an opportunity to swim some races they do not typically and they enjoyed crushing their old times in those events. It was a ton of fun to watch everyone race so hard and execute the little details we have been working on. I am incredibly excited to see what the group can do as we continue the season!

  • Lena Duryee has been absolutely crushing her training; she works incredibly hard during dryland and has been crushing aerobic training sets. This training proved valuable as she was able to use her increased endurance to destroy her previous best in the 200 Fly. She used her excellent speed to get off to a strong start then held on well during the final 50 to give herself a monster 5.5-second drop.
  • Caden Gray has been going about his training in all the right ways, always showing up and putting in his best effort. His training really came through for him as he was able to produce several best times over the weekend. He turned in a super strong swim in the 100 Free. He got off to a great start and blasted the first 50 then kept his tempo up and charged home to finish with a huge 1.5-second drop.
  • Neha Phatak always comes to practice with a smile on her face and a positive attitude then proceeds to work incredibly hard taking on any challenge she is given. She only swam one day at the meet but turned in some great swims, going right at or better than her best in all her races. She had a very strong 200 Fly. Her first 100 was incredibly smooth and she was able to keep that same flow through the third 50 then stayed tough and gutted it out the final 50 to finish with her second fastest time ever in the race.
  • Miranda Range has been very dedicated and really stepped up her attendance lately. She trains with focus and works hard to execute the sets the exact way they are designed to be done. She was rewarded with three new best times. She had a stellar swim in the 200 Breast. She had great pullouts throughout the entire race and kept her stroke long early before picking up the tempo into the finish to give herself a 5-second drop and put her very close to breaking 3:00 for the first time.
  • Andy Yang took on a very tough schedule of events, swimming some of the toughest 200s and several races being back-to-back. He was happy to take on the challenge and really rose to the occasion and raced phenomenally the whole weekend. He kicked things off by destroying his old time in the 200 Fly. He was strong in the first 100 then even split the next two 50s, staying tough all the way to the finish to earn a 7.5-second drop.

Senior Epic

Senior Epic had an intense week of practice and finished the week strong racing well at our home pool! Our group did a good job racing some of their main events along with some off events too. It was a great opportunity to update old times and keep track of their overall progress during the season. Enjoy some highlights from our group:

  • Ethan Lin started off the year strong, going five best times! In the 200 Fly, he was brave to go out fast and maintained his stroke well, dropping 12 seconds from his previous time.
  • Sophia Gorveatt had many solid swims throughout the weekend, particularly in her 200 yard events. She swam a best time in the 200 IM, demonstrating a strong freestyle to close her race with great speed.
  • Daniel Chen had a strong weekend and went three best times! He had an outstanding performance in the 100 Back, maintaining his speed through the finish to drop 1.8 seconds.
  • Amelia Pletosu has been working a lot on her breaststroke and it was evident in both of her breaststroke events. In the 200 Breast, she paced herself very well and dropped almost 10 seconds, showing significant improvement in her technique.
  • Gabe Traina earned two new personal best times at the meet. His standout race was the 200 IM, where he dropped 4.4 seconds and delivered a strong backstroke split to set him up for that solid time drop.
