Coach Kirby, Who Knew he Could Swim?
Kirby Schaufler, (The Mighty Marlins Swim Club Coach), swam at the National Senior Games Swimming Championships, (Also known as the Fat Old Man Olympics) in Des Moines Iowa the weekend of July 25-28. Kirby took 3rd in the 400 and 200 IM, and the 200 backstroke. Kirby also took 5th in the 500 free and 7th in the 50-butterfly. Kirby’s friend, Wayne Huebener, also took a 3rd in the 500 free. Far in the past, Kirby and Wayne helped the Grinnell Pioneers College Swim Team to 6 consecutive conference Championships in the late 1970’s and early 1980’s. Kirby was also the announcer for the 70 and over sessions of the meet, and by the end of the meet was know as “Golden Throat”!
