Meet Coach Beth:

Beth Wilson is excited to be joining Shades Valley YMCA as  Swim Team Coach for Shades Valley’s Swim Birmingham YMCA swimmers. Beth returns to coaching and swim instruction after long careers in public and private business.

While attending college at the University of Alabama, Beth spent summers, and two years after graduation working for the Birmingham Park and Recreation Board (BPR) as Swim Team Coach, Swim Instructor and lead lifeguard. Beth coached the City’s largest neighborhood swim Team, was Eastern District Coach, and subsequently Head Coach of the Birmingham Park Board’s Citywide Swim Team, a Jefferson County Swim Council (JCSC)/United States Swimming (USS) affiliate, and was chosen out of the Birmingham Mayor’s office to Coach Birmingham’s United States Youth Games Swim Team. The U.S. Youth Games Team consisted of eight USS (USA) swimmers from the five-county metro area who swam the fastest qualifying times. Beth also served as the Eastern District Swim Program Coordinator covering eight of the City’s sixteen neighborhood pools.

The Neighborhood Swim Team grew significantly under Beth’s direction and won the City Championship two years. The BPR team placed swimmers in both Senior County and the State Park and Recreation Board Championships. The US Youth Games team won the team swimming competition in both Montclair, New Jersey (NYC) and Washington D.C. A senior swimmer set a new Southeastern USS record time at the Washington D.C. competition. Beth Served as Delegate to the JCSC and was elected Vice President, presiding over Rules and Meet Officiating. Loving the water, Beth kept a hand in aquatics over the years occasionally lifeguarding and swimming competitively for the Magic City Masters Swim Team. Beth was nominated for the J.C. Penny Golden Rule Award for Volunteer Service by Operation New Birmingham for an instructional swim program led for the Center for Urban Missions Metro Summer Camp utilizing her banking co-workers as volunteer swim instructors and a loaned City of Birmingham pool.

Beth learned to swim at the Northeast YMCA (NEY) and spent many summers in the NEY pool. Beth first swam competitively for Northeast YMCA before joining Pioneer Athletic Club, a USS team out of Jefferson State Community College. Beth’s first lifeguarding job was at the NEY.
