THE TEAM
The Beginner training group(RED) is for younger swimmers just getting started in competitive swimming. Swimmers will be introduced to stroke technique and competitive skills (starts and turns). Swimmers must be able to swim the length of the pool backstroke and freestyle with no equipment or assistance or have passed stage 4.  Will begin to learn breaststroke and butterfly.  Swimmers are able to swim 300-600 yard sets. Recommended to practice at least 2 times per week

The intermediate training group(WHITE) Must have a 50 freestyle time of 41-60 seconds. This group continues to grow with stroke techniques but also begin to increase endurance and strength.  Swimmers should be able to swim all 4 competitive strokes. Swimmers should expect to swim 1500-2500 yards per practice. Swimmers will have effective finishes, underwater work, starts and turns of all 4 strokes.  Capable of swimming 20-35 minute sets. Recommended to practice 2-3 times per week.

The Advanced training group(BLUE) must have a 50 freestyle time of :40 seconds or faster and a 100 freestyle time of 1:30 or faster.  Swimmers will continue to develop their stroke technique and competitive skills with an Increased emphasis on endurance training. Swimmers in this group have made a commitment to the sport and will be expected to train at a higher level. Recommended to practice 4 times per week. Capable of swimming 30-45 minute sets and 3000-4000 yards per practice.

The Blue Wave swim team is for individuals willing to work hard and compete in scheduled swim meets.  The emphasis of the program is skill development, sportsmanship and the enjoyment of swim competition.  Younger participants should be able to swim multiple lengths of the pool (unassisted using no floatation device) without touching the bottom.  Advanced swimmers should possess the ability to skillfully swim strokes in ranges of 2-4,000 yards per practice.  Competitive swimming is not a “learn to swim” program.

Prerequisite:

  • Swim 25 yards each front crawl and back crawl without assistance or equipment.
  • Pass Stage 4 of YMCA swim lessons or equivalent.

Dates:

  • Program begins on October 16, 2023
  • The program continues through the YMCA Sectional Meet on February 11, 2024.
  • For qualifying swimmers state will be March 2nd and 3rd, 2024.
  • Regionals will be March 22-24,2024 at the Linn Mar Aquatic Center in Marion, IA
