Swim Meet Volunteer Jobs

Timers - Head Timer Rob Hedley

This is a no-pressure, fun job that gets you right in the middle of the action.  You will be given a stopwatch and instructed by the meet starter to start the watch when the starting strobe goes off.  You will stop the watch when some part of the swimmer touches the wall.  There are two timers per lane.

Runners - Ellie MacDonald

No experience is necessary, but you must be quick on your feet! Record the times and places of the swimmer.  This is a perfect job for two people to share during an event.

Scoring Table – Alan Reno

This is a clerical position that works at the scoring table where the times are recorded, and the scores are kept. In summer swimming, each club has one worker scoring for the home team & one worker scoring for the away team. Then at the end of the meet, both teams will immediately have a full set of results.

Records/Triple Winners - Alan Reno

This is an easy clerical job, with more flexibility than most meet jobs. You sit near the scoring table and check the line-up cards after the scorers are done with them to see if any team or pool records were broken. If so, write them down for the announcer to publicize and fill in a ribbon for the swimmer. You also record all triple winners for home meets and complete a form after the meet which needs to be faxed to the Delco Times by 1:00.

Place Judge -

You will be assigned to stand at one end of the pool to watch the finish of each race. It is up to you to determine the order in which the swimmers finish. Your results are taken to the scoring table by the runner. You will also watch the relay changeovers for false starts. This job is important, because place judge finishes, not times, are what count for official meet results.

Stroke & Turn Judge (training required) Head Officials Mike and James; Trainees: Kenny and Christen Jeckell, we always need trainees!

Each team supplies one stroke & turn judge for the meet. You will walk along the side of the pool watching the swimmers as they race. You will have to judge if their strokes & turns are legal or not. This job does require some experience, but you are rewarded with a great view of the action. We would be happy to help you get trained if you are interested!

Starter Referee (training required) - Marsha Peterson and James Tangorra

Using a whistle & a starting strobe device, you are responsible for getting the swimmers on and off the blocks at the same time. You also have oversight responsibility for the judging at the meet. You must be familiar with the NCAA & Delco League rules & you will provide “dual confirmation” for false start DQ’s and place judge finish results. You are responsible for keeping the meet moving. This is a true leadership position that requires a strong, experienced person.

Announcer – Terek Peterson

A good job for a person with a strong voice. You will be responsible for announcing the names of the swimmers before each race. There is some pressure here. You must work with the starter to keep the meet moving quickly and smoothly.

50/50

This is a great way to meet everyone who comes to a swim meet! The 50/50 is another important fundraiser for the swim team. Tickets are sold during the meet and a drawing is held towards the end of the meet. The winner gets half of the money collected.

Duck Raffle

This is a great way to meet everyone who comes to a swim meet! Like the 50/50 it is another important fundraiser for the swim team. Ducks are 'picked' and all selected ducks are sent down the slide.  Once in the pool our Duck Master will slide down the slide into the pool and pick the winning duck by its number.  The winner will receive a gift card.

Zookeepers

Those 8 and unders and 10 and unders sure do confuse easily. It’s up to the Zookeepers to make sure the younger kids are where they are supposed to be, when they are supposed to be there. Traditionally, older team members have enjoyed doing this job at JV meets, but we still depend on parents for the varsity meets.

Karakung Mini Meet Coordinator

If you are a parent of an 8 and under this is a job for you.  This meet is only for swimmers who are 8 and younger.  The coordinator would promote the meet, take entries, coordinate and collect fees and attend the meet with the coaches.

Relay Carnival Coordinators

This is a job for two parents willing to promote and organize a fun meet.  This job includes inviting swim teams from the area, coordinating the logistics of the meet with the help of other parents, as well as arranging t-shirt sales for the event.  While this is a large event this is a low key fun chance to give the kids a chance to celebrate swimming in a fun, noncompetitive environment.

Web Administrators

This is a job for parents willing to manage the Team Unify website.  This tool is our way of communicating with parents and swimmers, manage eligible swimmers, know who is attending meets, manage rosters and meet results, as well as communicate social events.  The website is easy to use.  Training videos are available, as well as support from those volunteers who have helped manage the site before.

Spirit Wear and Team Gift Coordinator

We use a local company for our team spirit wear.  The role requires identifying items, taking orders and coordinating with the vendor.  This is not time consuming and most of time involved is in picking up the orders, sorting them and distributing the items.

Pep Rally Volunteers

We usually have a get together the Friday before home Varsity meets.  The activities vary.  Sometimes we have a spirit night where the kids create posters or make crafts.  We also have had a or a build your own sundae team building event.  Possibilities are endless.  The goal is to get together and have a team bonding experience.  We just need someone to coordinate, organize supplies and coordinate parents to help set up and clean up.

Banquet Coordinator

This year we will be having the banquet at the pool due to the COVID restrictions.  The coordinator will help with the food, and event planning.  A signup is used to solicit day of volunteers for set up and clean up.  The coordinator will work with the team coordinator to purchase awards and end of the season slide show

Slide Show Producer

The end of the season slide show is a main event at the banquet.  We need a volunteer with experience putting together the slide show.  The producer will work with the team photographers as well as other parents for the content.  This is an activity which requires several hours the week before the banquet, but otherwise is not overly time consuming

Team Photographers

The team photographers are key in providing content for the end of the season slide show.  The parent doesn’t need to be a professional, but a good camera and an ability to catch those moments is a helpful skill.  Some kids relish n their photos being taken and will ham it up, others are more elusive!

Water Juggers

We have two water Jugs to fill and keep full during the meets for the volunteers, coaches and swimmers.  This requires some heavy lifting, but otherwise is an easy job.  Ice is a nice to have, but cold water from the tap is the only real requirement.  Cups will be provided by the team coordinator.
