Winter Junior Olympics - Day Two
Southern California Swimming’s 2014 Winter Junior Olympics continued with day two in sunny Santa Clarita and Beach Cities had some outstanding performances from all age groups.
The meet kicked off with Jennie Bao and first time JO swimmer Sophie Kuehler swimming the girls 13-14 100 yard breaststroke. Sophie placed 9th in prelims with a time of 1:12.52 and locked in a first alternate position for the 100 breast finals.
The next event featured superstar Emily Pitman and breakout star Jamie Brennan in the 7-10 girls 50 backstroke. Emily finished 10th in prelims with a best time of 35.40 and came back for consolation finals to finish 12th overall. Jamie Brennan represented the Red Group well with a best time of 36.45 placing 16th and earning a spot in consolations with Emily. Jamie came back for consoles and dropped event more time finishing 14th overall with a time of 36.29. Congratulations on all the hard swimming girls!!
The 7-10 boys were up next for the 50 back. Kai Scarlet and Zach Yakubik represented the team well as veterans and first time JO swimmers Matthew Cullen and Mason McEwen set the bar high for JO rookies. Kai Scarlet finished 3rd in prelims and came back for finals with a 3rd place overall finish and a best time of 31.71. Great swimming, boys!!
Roger Brown, Sean Keegan, and Caleb Gorman represented the 11-12 boys in the 50 yard backstroke. Roger dropped time in prelims and locked in a 3rd place spot for finals and best time of 31.19. He finished 4th overall in the finals. Congratulations, boys!!
The next event featured Riley Farrell and Lauren Nielsen in the girls 13-14 200 butterfly. Riley raced in prelims to an 11th place finish and a 3 second drop with a best time of 2:24.43. Way to go girls!!
Ryan O’Shaughnessy and Mason McEwen represented Beach Cities in the 7-10 boys 50 yard freestyle. Ryan raced in prelims to a best time of 31.08 and Mason stayed close to his best with a time of 32.08. Great job, boys!! Kathryn Doyle represented the 13-14 girls in the 50 yard freestyle and she raced to a swift, best time of 26.18. WOW! Great swims!!
The girls 7-10 200 yard freestyle was exciting for Emily Pitman in both prelims and finals. She raced to a best time in prelims dropping 2 seconds off her best with a time of 2:25.92 and then came back for finals with another time drop and a 14th place overall finish. The 7-10 boys were represented through Ryan O’Shaughnessy and Matthew Cullen and both boys had great swims. Ryan dropped 4.5 seconds off his best for a new time of 2:19.75 and then came back for finals, dropped more time and placed 5th overall. Ace!!
The 11-14 girls featured Riley Farrell and Alex Crisera in the 500 freestyle. Both girls went best times and placed at finals. Alex dropped 11 seconds off of her prelims time with a best time of 5:30.81 and a 5th place overall finish. Riley locked in a 6th place spot for finals and swam a final time and best time of 5:23.70, dropping over 6 seconds and finishing 4th overall. Nice job ladies!
Sean Keegan wrapped up the prelims session with an 8.5 second time drop in the 12 year old boys 500 freestyle with a time 5:35.98 and an 11th place finish. Great swim, Sean!!
Alex Crisera, Nikki Cooper, Kai Scarlet, and Ryan O’Shaughnessey all swam time trials and each swimmer swam to a best time. Great effort!!
Day 3 will feature the 50 breast, 200 back, 100 fly, 200 free, 200 IM, and the 400 medley. Stay tuned for more amazing swims.
