Short Course Finale Recap

Tim Murphy

Short Course Finale (March 5, 2022)
Just learned a new word this morning: borasco - a sudden violent gust of wind, typically accompanied by rain, snow, or sleet.  So that’s what it’s called!  All that was missing on Saturday was the precipitation :-).

We could not be more proud of our 70+ athletes (and their families) and the way they carried themselves throughout a challenging day of competition at the Short Course Finale meet in Torrance last weekend, especially our rookies!  With the cold and blustery conditions on Saturday, it was virtually impossible for the athletes to stay warm.  While that certainly had an impact on performance, there was still a BUNCH of great racing to report!

Thank you to all of our athletes and parent volunteers for your abundantly positive attitudes and grit!  Go, BCS!

Marlin B
For the Marlins, this was their first invitational style meet and while there was certainly some learning/adjusting taking place (DQs and missed races :-), the group performed really well, despite the challenging conditions.  They also had a lot of fun in the process!

Tara Biggs
Miss Biggs notched three results her first time out (50 Breast, 50 Free, 100 IM), with her best finish coming in the 50 Breast (30th place).  She also raced to a 1:46.86 in the 100 IM.  Nice work, Tara!

Devin Davis
Mr. Davis had four solid swims (100 Free, 50 Back, 50 Breast, 50 Free), placing as high as 10th in the 50 Breast, with a time of 58.87.  Way to go, Devin!

Vinh Huynh
Mr. Huynh showed big improvement, stringing together four really good races, culminating in a legal Butterfly kick (he’s been working hard on this) in his 100 IM.  His best finish was 4th place in the 50 Free (38.16).  Congrats, Vinh!

Jameson Mui
Mr. Mui bounced back from the disappointment of missing a race to finish 16th in the 50 Back (44.95) and 3rd in the 50 Free (37.93).  Way to persevere, Jameson!

Darei Robertson
Mr. Robertson had three good swims (100 Free, 50 Back, 50 Free), placing as high as 9th in the 50 Free (41.74).  Great effort, Darei!

Bailey Stubbs
Although Miss Stubbs’s day started with a couple of DQs (learning moments :-), she rebounded with two strong swims to finish the day, cracking 2 minutes in the 100 IM to finish 46th.  Well done, Bailey!

Juju Tymick
Miss Tymick had some really good swims, finishing as high as 6th place in the 50 Back.  Unfortunately, a mistake cost her an official result in the 100 IM at the end of the meet, but we are looking forward to her next opportunity with that race.  Kudos, Juju!

Greg Willis
Mr. Willis’s day went really well until he missed the final relay :-).  He finished as high as 8th place in the 50 Free (41.28) and not lower than 33rd (100 Free) to rack up four official results in his first meet.  Good racing, Greg!

Beach 1
This group fought hard all day and put on their best faces, despite the challenging conditions.  As you’ll see below, there were some REALLY good swims.  Nobody complained.  Nobody quit.  I am very proud of the effort of this group.  Well done, Beach 1!

Juliana Antunes
Miss Antunes raced the 100 Free and the 100 IM for the first time ever and cut a huge chunk of time off her previous best in the 50 Breast (-2.49) to finish 34th in that event.  She also contributed on the relay front, placing 11th in the Medley Relay and 12th in the Free Relay.  Solid effort, Juliana!

Olivia Brutscher
Miss Brutscher kicked off her individual races with a massive 10 second drop in the 100 Free, also producing new best times in the 50 Fly (-3.17) and 50 Back (small drop).  She also threw down a couple of strong relay swims to help her teams to 11th and 12th place finishes, respectively.  Strong showing, Olivia!

Avery Ehrmann
Miss Ehrmann had a really good meet, dropping time in three of her four individual races, including a 9+ second drop in the 100 Free and nearly 3 second drops in both the 50 Breast and 50 Free.  She, too, contributed to the relay effort with her teams’ 11th and 13th place finishes.  Congrats, Avery!

Skye Engle
Miss Engle batted 1.000, going four for four with best times in each of her individual races (100 Free -4.99, 50 Fly -1.27, 50 Breast -2.15, 100 IM -6.57).  She also came up with the fastest split on her 3rd place 200 Free relay.  Happy to see your hard work pay off, Skye!

Sean Everitt
Mr. Everitt raced the 50 Breast and the 100 Free for the first time and swam just off his best time in the 50 Free.  Unfortunately, he was DQd in his final individual race (100 IM), but we know what he needs to fix and he will fare better next time.  Great effort, Sean!

Keira Goss
It was a treat to be able to watch Miss Goss race in her first meet, after recovering from a bone fracture that limited her practice time in the previous couple of months.  Despite that obstacle, she continued to show up and do the work that she could and she made considerable progress in all of her strokes.  She swam four solid races and her highest finish of the meet came in the 50 Free (20th).  Happy for you, Keira!

Jon Kipp
Mr. Kipp posted a big 2 second drop in his 50 Back and swam just off his best times in his other three races.  He also made big contributions to our relays, racing legs on the 4th place Free Relay and the victorious Medley Relay!  Congrats, Jon!

Patrick Kipp
The younger Mr. Kipp raced to two new personal bests (50 Fly and 100 IM), snagging three podium finishes in the process.  He was 2nd place in the 50 Fly and 50 Back and won the 100 IM!  He will go on to represent the team at Spring JOs this weekend as a member of the 10&Under Boys 200 Medley Relay!  Good luck, Patrick!

Bella Lee
Miss Lee struggled a bit, but was within striking distance of her best time in all of her races.  She shined the brightest in the relays, throwing down two very good splits as the Breaststroker on the Medley and the anchor on the Free Relay.  Keep working, Bella!

Madison Manalo-Pavach
Miss Manalo-Pavach raced the 100 Free and 50 Breast for the first time ever and posted a new personal best in the 100 IM in her last individual race of the meet.  She also swam on both relays, popping off a really good Fly leg on the Medley and giving a great effort on the 3rd place Free Relay.  Way to go, Madison!

Kaya McGatlin
Miss McGatlin posted her first times in the 100 Free, 50 Fly and 100 IM and snagged a new best time in the 50 Back leading off the Medley Relay, rounding out a really nice day of racing.  Great effort, Kaya!

Percy McGuinn
Miss McGuinn has been working hard and started the meet with a new best time in the 50 Back as the leadoff leg of the 6th place Medley Relay.  She also posted personal bests in the 100 Free and 50 Fly.  Despite a DQ in the 100 IM, it was a good day for her.  Keep it up, Percy!

Piper Sootkoos
Miss Sootkoos started the meet with a solid 50 Back, as the leadoff leg of the Medley Relay, which is good because she had a little oopsie later on that day when she missed her individual 50 Back race :-).  Despite the hiccup, she had a solid day of racing, swimming just off her best times in the 50 Fly and 50 Breast and earning a podium finish (3rd place) for her effort on the 200 Free Relay.  She will race this weekend at Spring JOs as a member of the 10&Under 200 Medley Relay.  Go get ‘em, Piper!

Sellers Stough
This was Mr. Sellers first invitational style meet and it was so fun watching him race!  He placed in the top 10 in each of his four individual races, with his highest finish a 4th place finish in the 100 IM.  Keep up the great work, Sellers!

Lily Sutherlin
Miss Sutherlin is another athlete who had a really solid outing, posting official times in the 50 Free, 50 Back and 100 IM (sub 1:40) for the first time, as well as improving on her previous best in the 50 Breast, which was her highest finish (32nd place) of the meet.  Strong showing, Lily!

Katie Traylen
Miss Traylen has been working her tail off and saw big improvements in two races (100 Free -9.30, 50 Breast -2.79).  With Fly still a work in progress, she struggled a bit in the 50 Fly and 100 IM, but was still right around her best times.  She also raced really well on the relays, helping her teams finish 12th in the Medley and 7th in the Free Relay.  Keep doing what you’re doing, Katie!

Kyle Vo
Mr. Vo keeps chugging along and doing things the right way and gets a little bit better every day.  Just off his best time in the 100 Free, he found a groove in his next two races (50 Fly -1.13, 50 Breast -1.77), but was DQd in the 100 IM.  We will figure that one out next time :-).  Strong showing, Kyle!

Beach 2
Beach 2 took twelve athletes to Short Course Finale, and the energy was buzzing! I was very impressed with the attitude of all the athletes on Saturday. They braved the almost hurricane-like winds, and they never stopped smiling in the cold weather. Overall Beach 2 had 25 total best times, which is amazing considering the weather! My favorite highlight of the meet was our attention to the details, our Streamlines, turns and sub-kicks have improved tenfold.

The future is bright for Beach 2, and I am excited to see what they can all do during long course season.

Kenzie Brock
Kenzie has recently joined Beach Cities and Beach 2 and she has been a wonderful addition to the team. Her attitude at the meet was contagious, she never stopped smiling! Her highlight of the meet was dropping a second in her 100 IM at the end of the meet! I am excited to see Kenzie progress even further during long course season.

Lia Caldwell
This was Lia’s first meet in quite a while, and it was great to see her in action again! She has been working hard on her details and technique in practice and it is showing off while she races. I have a feeling big time drops are on the horizon for Lia. Keep trusting the process Lia!

Zoey Cho
This was Zoey’s best meet with me so far, she executed her race plans to a tee, and she walked away with 3 out of 4 best times! The hard work is paying off Zoey. I was very impressed with Zoey’s attitude throughout the day, every time I saw Zoey she was laughing and having fun, this is what Swim meets are about!

Larissa Fernandez
I was very impressed with Larissa’s swimming on Saturday, her technique and details continue to shine. I was also impressed with the times she put up considering she hasn’t been able to make as many practices as she would like, because she is well on her way to changing the world for the better! I am excited to see Larissa progress in the summer, her potential is limitless in and out of the pool!

Keira Lyman
Keira started off the meet with a huge 12s drop in the 100 Free, and ended the meet going 33s in the 200 Fr relay! I can only imagine how fast she would’ve swam in better weather conditions. Her hard work in the practice pool is paying off, and I can’t wait to see what long course season has in store for Keira!

Sheenah Mahindra

Sheenah was white hot at the meet this past weekend, even in the frigid conditions! She walked away with 4 out 4 best times, and two big relay swims! Her hard work and willingness to change and work on her technique is paying off. More time drops are on the way!

Hudson Menke
Hudson walked away from Short Course Finale with 2 new best times, but his biggest race was his 100 IM at the end of the session. He dropped a whopping 4 seconds! It was a big confident swim and I hope he can continue swimming with that level of confidence at his next Swim Meet!

Alexandra Nimick
Alex had a mix bag of races at short course finale, but her last race of the day was her highlight and was the Alex that I know and want to see more if in practice and at meets. She walked away with a best time in her 50 back and just a second off her best in the 100 IM. What made the 100 IM a highlight for me, was I see Alex racing and competing till the end! Now let’s bring that energy and use it in the practice pool!

Matteo Sanchez
This was Matteo’s first meet in a while, he has been tearing it up on the soccer field, he has some serious soccer skills! I was very impressed with how Matteo carried himself at the meet. He was always ready to listen and apply his race plan. He also walked away with a plan for the practice pool, and how he can improve. Every great athlete uses competition as a learning tool and Matteo did just that! I am very excited to see what the summer has in store for Matteo.

Joseph Scallon
Joseph has been putting in some serious work in the practice pool and it is showing at our meets. He walked away from the meet with 3 out 4 best times, he matched his best on the 100 IM at the end of the session. Joseph your attention to details at practice is paying off. Keep up the hard work and you will see big time drops very soon!

Mayank Shenoy
Mayank has also been working hard in the practice pool and the work is paying off. He started the meet with a bang, dropping 22 seconds in his 200Fr! He then dropped another 2 seconds in his 100 Breast, plus adding two big relay swims to his name. I’m excited to see him race at our next meet, I have a feeling this trend will continue!

Alyssa Tieman
Alyssa is another one of our multi-sport athletes, so this was her first meet in a while as well. Boy oh boy did she come to race, she walked away with 3 out of 4 best times, missing out on 4 by .14 in the individual 50Fr. She did however go under her best in the freestyle leg of the medley relay, that 30s barrier is coming closer and closer. Summer is going to be exciting for Alyssa not just in swimming but in her other sports as well!

Beach 4
Beach 4 ended up only being represented by two swimmers due to injuries and illness.  As with Pacific Committee Champs, it was only girls from the group who attended the meet.  If it weren’t for a DQ, these two girls would have been 100% with best times.

Brooke Miller had a breakout meet.  She had best times in all four of her events and helped the team score points on relays too.  Not sure how, but this was the first time Brooke swam the 100 Backstroke and she achieved a B standard right away.  She also achieved a B standard in the 100 Breaststroke and inched closer to the BB standard in her 100 Freestyle.

Kaia Weiss also had a really good meet.  She had best times in three of her events, including five second drops in both her 100 Backstroke and 100 Breaststroke.  Kaia would have also had a best time in the 200 IM but she was disqualified while attempting the cross-over turn.  She was also on the same relays as her group-mate.

Senior 2
Senior 2 was represented by four swimmers at this meet.  This small group of swimmers showed up and did really well.  They were close to 70% best times achieved for the whole group.  Some of them also helped the team with relays.

Emma Gallagher swam in her first club meet in almost a year, and boy did she shine.  She placed in the Top 10 in all of her races and achieved best times in three out of the four, and was right on her best time in her fourth race.  Emma dropped a whopping 11 seconds in her 100 Backstroke, an event she hadn’t swum since 2019.  She was not far off the BB standard for that event, but she did achieve the BB standard in the 200 IM.

Giya Kiran had one best time for the day in the 100 Backstroke.  She added time in her three other races.  However, her technique was solid throughout her races.  Giya had great front half speed, but was unable to maintain that on the back half.  She also participated on two relays and split those well.

Matthan Lu swam in his third meet ever at the Finale, and continued to drop time.  He had two best times and swam two events for the first time.  Matthan dropped almost five seconds in the 100 Freestyle.  He swam a smooth 200 Freestyle and split it fairly well and can only get better.

Priya Ramcharan swam in her fourth meet with Beach Cities swimming, and prior to this season, hadn’t swum in a meet since early 2019.  She had three best times and dropped over five seconds across those three races.  She would have had another best time had she not been disqualified in the 200 IM.  Priya joined her group-mate Giya on two relays.
