2022 June Age Group Championships Recap

Tim Murphy

June Age Group Championships (June 17-20, 2022)
Summer championship racing is underway!  BCS finished in fourth place in the combined team competition at the June Age Group Championships, just 71.5 points from a podium finish and a reminder of the importance of relays (lost some valuable points there due to a few early takeoffs - learning moments!).  Our Women placed third overall and the Men fifth.

Speaking of relays, our 11-12 Girls team of Eryn Arnold, Gabi Brito, Meagan Gordon and Kayla Sun nearly rewrote the entire BCS 11-12 Girls record book by smashing three of the four relay records in that age group in the 200 Free, 200 Medley and 400 Medley (more on that in the Beach 5 recap below)!

Also noteworthy were the three first-time Sectionals cuts (Gabi Brito, Fred Brown, James Coyne) and one first-time Futures cut (Kotaro Bell) achieved.

Congratulations, athletes, on a fantastic weekend of racing!

Beach 1
Beach 1 continues to see action at Championship meets, this time all in the very fun and very valuable relay events!

Adam Kim (11-12 Boys)
Mr. Kim’s ascension from a mid-tier Pre-Comp athlete to Championship level racing in a matter of months has been nothing short of impressive.  As the Breaststroke leg on both Medley Relays, he destroyed his previous best swims in both the 50 and 100, outpacing his best 50 by roughly 3 seconds and his best 100 by close to 7 seconds.  His relays finished 4th (400 Medley) and 3rd (200 Medley), earning Mr. Kim his first podium finish in a Championship setting.  Remarkable racing, Adam!  Congratulations!

Sebastian Martinez (11-12 Boys)
Mr. Martinez got his first taste of Championship racing as a member of the 6th place 200 Free Relay, splitting about a second faster than his best “flat start” 50 Free.  Way to go, Sebastian!

Sellers Stough (7-10 Boys)
Mr. Stough, competing in his second Championship meet since joining the competitive team in January, threw down a solid split on the 200 Free Relay.  Unfortunately, his team was disqualified for a false start, but this did not dampen his spirits and he is excited to give it another go at Summer JOs!  Great effort, Sellers!

Beach 2
Beach 2 took a small contingent to JAG, but they represented our group and team superbly! We had a total of 2 individual qualifiers, congratulations Matteo Trombley and Aria Kim, and we had 3 relay-only athletes, congratulations John and David Arnold and Piper Sootkoos!

I am immensely proud of all the swimmers this past weekend, it was amazing to watch you all race but at the same time have a tremendous amount of fun!

The future is bright for our age group program and I’m excited to see what these athletes can do at Summer Jo’s!

Matteo Trombley (7-10 Boys)

Matteo came into JAG coming off a white-hot Last Ditch meet, he went from having 1 Cut to 3! I have been very proud of Matteo lately; he really started to hit his stride with swimming and it showed over the weekend.

Matteo walked away with 1 new best time in 50 Free and Matched his best times in the 100 Bk, 50Bk, and 50Br.

Another highlight of Matteo’s weekend was his ability to demonstrate world-class character and show everyone the meaning of a great teammate. More on that later!

Keep up the good work Matteo; the future is bright for you!

Aria Kim (7-10 Girls)

Aria was our 2nd individual qualifier, she competed in the 50 Breast, and matched her best time. This was an eye opening experience for Aria and I think we will be seeing more individual cuts for Aria in the very near future!

Piper Sootkoos (7-10 Girls)

Piper was part of both the 10 under girls relay. She swam the freestyle leg for the 200 Medley relay and she went 2nd on the 200 Freestyle relay.

Piper crushed her best time in the Freestyle relay by 2 whole seconds! During the Medley, she matched her best 50 free time. I’m looking forward to watching Piper in action during Summer Jo’s. I see great things happening in her future!

John Arnold (7-10 Boys)

John joined us at JAG for the boys' 10 and under 200 medley relay, where he swam the breaststroke leg. During his 50 of Breaststroke, he knocked off 2s off his best and helped the boys finish in 5th Place, scoring 28 points for the team. John, I was very impressed with your enthusiasm on Saturday, and I am also very excited to see you swim more at championship meets!

David Arnold (7-10 Boys)

David also joined us at JAG on Saturday. He was part of the boys' 10 and under freestyle Relay and Medley relay where he swam the freestyle leg.

After an eager start on the freestyle leg, David bounced back with some help from his friend Matteo and he crushed his 50 Free in the Medley relay! David, I was very impressed with your resilience at the meet! After a setback in the Free relay, you bounced back and knocked 1s of your 50 FR time, congratulations David!

Beach 3
Seven B3 athletes traveled to La Mirada to throw down some very strong individual and relay swims, accented by a great example of BCS World Class Character (see Patrick Wang below).

Santi Baranda (11-12 Boys)
Fresh off an airplane and an illness, Mr. Baranda fought bravely as a member of the 6th place 400 Free Relay, splitting right on his best flat start time in the 100 Free.  Impressive feat, considering we weren’t sure he would be healthy enough to compete just a few days earlier.  Strong showing, Santi!

Penny Chiu (11-12 Girls)
Miss Chiu was on fire as a member of three BCS relays (200 Free - 8th place, 200 Medley - 8th place, 400 Free - 11th place), including standout splits on both Free relays: ~2 seconds faster than her best flat start 50 Free and ~6 seconds faster than her flat start 100 Free, which were both posted just two weeks earlier!  Outstanding racing, Penny!

Talia Cistone (11-12 Girls)
Miss Cistone raced to a 30th place finish in the 100 Breast, her first individual race at a Championship meet, and made scoring contributions to the team effort as a member of the 9th place 400 Medley Relay and the 11th place 400 Free Relay.  She has really turned a corner with her attitude and effort and is blossoming as a leader in the group.  Way to go, Talia!

Hana Imai (7-10 Girls)
Miss Imai performed marvelously, scoring in each of her three individual races and posting a new best time in each of them, to boot (100 Breast - 12th, 200 IM - 13th, 50 Breast - 12th).  Her biggest improvements came in the 100 Breast (-4.29) and the 200 IM (-5.89).  She also threw down a couple of solid splits as a member of the 5th place 200 Free Relay and 3rd place 200 Medley Relay.  As one of the hardest workers in the group, it is nice to watch that work pay off.  Congratulations, Hana!

Hailey Kuo (7-10 Girls)
Miss Kuo was another of our 7-10 Girls who had a very good weekend of racing, finishing in the top 20 in each of her three individual races and posting best times in two (100 Breast -3.01, 50 Breast -.30).  She, too, got the job done as a member of the 5th place 200 Free Relay and 3rd place 200 Medley Relay.  Keep up the great work, Hailey!

Adelei Mosteller (7-10 Girls)
Miss Mosteller is our resident jack-of-all-aquatic-trades, racing at swim meets, scoring goals at polo matches and, now, ripping vertical entries into diving tanks.  She had a full slate of racing last weekend, with 6 individual races and 2 relays, finishing no lower than 13th place and posting standout swims in the 200 Free (9th place -3.88) and the 100 Fly (13th place -2.34).  She was also a member of the 5th place 200 Free Relay and 3rd place 200 Medley Relay.  Solid racing, Adelei!

Patrick Wang (7-10 Boys)
Mr. Wang deserves to be acknowledged here, not for his gutsy racing, but for his positive response to a challenging situation.  When the 7-10 Boys 200 Free Relay was disqualified for a false start by one of his teammates, he and his other relay ‘mates immediately sought out their dejected comrade and steered his energy back toward getting ready for their next relay, with words of encouragement and offers to practice their relay exchanges a few more times before the race.  What a remarkable response by these young men, not even 11 years old.  This is what it’s all about!  Mr. Wang placed no lower than 17th in each of his individual races, posting best times in the 200 IM (-2.87), 50 Back (-1.47), 50 Fly (-2.05) and 100 Fly (first long course 100 Fly and a Spring JO cut!).  He also raced valiantly as a member of the 5th place 200 Medley Relay.  Fantastic effort, Patrick!

Beach 4
Beach 4 was represented by one relay-only swimmer.  Alex Miyashita (11-12 Boys) represented the group well. He swam on all four relays, helping them place in the top 10 each time.  He split two seconds faster than his best 100 free on both the 400 Medley Relay and 400 Free Relay.  He also split best times in his 50 Free on the 200 Free Relay and the 200 Medley Relay, the latter which achieved a podium finish.

Beach 5
Beach 5 took a strong contingent of Swimmers to JAG; we had 12 individual qualifiers and 2 relay-only swimmers, and every single swimmer swam lights out! Words can’t describe how proud and impressed I am with all the athletes over the weekend. The energy on the deck, the team support, and the racing were impeccable, and I cannot wait for JO’s!

In total Beach 5 walked away with 45 new best times and 593 Individual points for the team!! It wasn’t just our individual races that shone over the weekend, our Relays did some serious damage as well.

Our 11-12 Girls A relay were undefeated for the weekend, they are also knocking on the door of the SOCAL record in the 200 Free Relay and 200 Medley relay. Our 11 -12 Girls B team finished inside the top 11 for their relays as well, scoring valuable points for the team. Our 11-12 Boys relay stepped up to the plate and placed inside the top 6 for their relays and made the podium in 1.

Amazing work Beach 5, you have one very impressed and very proud Coach, bring on JO’s!

Eryn Arnold (11-12 Girls)

Eryn Probably had the longest schedule out of anyone on our team. The first 2 days she competed in Prelims, Timed Finals, and Finals, 6 sessions in two days! But that didn’t stop her from achieving personal bests in the 200 Breast and the 400IM and making the podium in the 200 Breast. Eryn now has 3 sectional cuts to her name, and she is knocking on the door of Futures. Eryn, I have been in awe of your progress lately and I cannot wait to see you race at JO’s! Keep on Crushing it girl!

Gabi Brito (11-12 Girls)

Gabi continues to excel in the pool, and this past weekend was no different! She is the newest member of Beach 5 to join the sectional club. She snagged her first in the 100 Fr and then followed that up with an incredibly fast 50 Fr leading off the 200 Free relay! I see more sectional cuts coming her way at JO’s and who knows, maybe a futures cut as well! Gabi was our highest scoring athlete for JAG with a Whopping 110 individual points! The future is very bright for this young athlete!

Sarah Diethelm (11-12 Girls)

This Was Sarah’s last championship meet as a 12-year-old and she did not disappoint! She could only compete on Friday and Saturday so her schedule was loaded with 3 events per day plus relays. She rose up to the challenge and walked away with 4 best times and some very tired legs. Soon she will be racing in the 13 -14 age group and I am very excited to watch her excel in the pool and the soccer field!

Jake Everitt (13-14 Boys)

I was very impressed with Jake all weekend long, he made finals in the 100 Fly and the 50 Fr going best times in both races. However, some of his best racing came in the Relays. He was part of the 13-14 boys A relay and boy oh boy did he step up and race! He helped the boys finish in the top 10 4 out of 5 times, and two of those were 2nd and first place! Jake, you carried yourself like a true champion, and I can’t wait to see what you can achieve at JO’s.

Meagan Gordon (11-12 Girls)

Meagan had herself a great meet, she walked away with 4 out 6 best times and 4 out 6 podiums winning the 50 Fr and 50Fly! But that’s not all she is very very close to grabbing sectionals in the 50 Fr, can she join the club, I think so!

The one area that impressed me the most with Meagan this past weekend was how she attacked and swam her races. We came up with a plan together and she executed the plan perfectly. Now our focus turns to Jo’s and I have a feeling Meagan is going to shine in and out of the pool!

Avalon Kim (13-14 Girls)

This was Avalon’s first big championship meet and she relished in the spotlight! Avalon qualified for JAG in the 100 and 200 Back, she walked away with 2 new best times and 2 final swims! I would say that is a very successful first championship meet! Avalon left the meet hungry to improve and hungry to qualify for more championship meets. I have a feeling we will see her in more finals very soon!

Zoey Lewis (11-12 Girls)

Zoey qualified for JAG in 3 individual events and she was part of every relay team. Zoey dropped over 3s in her 100 Back and matched her best times from the last-ditch meet in the 50 Bk and 200 Free. Zoey is well on her way to having a breakthrough meet and I can’t wait to watch it happen. Keep on pushing in practice Zoey, chase your goals, big things are coming your way!

Soraya Lluz (11-12 Girls)

Raya was entered in 3 individual races and participated in all of the 11-12 relays. She walked away with 2 new best times in the 50 and 100 Bk, cracking the 1:25 barrier in the 100 and the 40 barrier in the 50. Her 3rd event was the 50 Fr where she matched her best time, however in the 200 Fr relay and the 200 Medley relay she beat her Personal best both times. Raya, keep up the hard work, and let’s continue on the success in the pool!

Marin Lohner (13-14 Girls)

Marin was one of our relay only athletes, and she joined the team on Saturday for the 200 Free Relay and the 200 Medley relay. She got to swim the 50 Fr twice and she beat her personal best by over a second both times. I am excited to see what she can do In her next individual 50 Fr. Marin brought the energy to her relay team and she anchored her team to 6th and 8th place helping the team achieve 48 points!

Alejandro Safa (13-14 Boys)

Alejandro was our other relay only athlete. He led off the Boys 13-14 B relay in the 400 Medley where he snagged a new best time. He was also Leading off the 200 Medley relay where he dropped a whopping 5 seconds in his 50 Bk! For the 200 Free relay, he took a break from leading and swam the anchor leg where he walked away with another best time and almost cracked the 30S barrier. 3 for 3 best times and 2 for 3 top 10 finishes! Congratulations Alejandro!

Kayla Sun (11-12 Girls)

This was Kayla’s meet of the season so far, I have a feeling Jo’s will be even better! She walked away with 5 new best times, only missing 100% best times by .008 in the 50 Free, so close!

She was able to break the 30s barrier in the 200 Fr relay and helped our girls win the event by 6 seconds! Kayla also led off the 200 Medley Relay, where she went under 35 seconds for the first time! Kayla, your growth has been exponential and this is just the tip of the iceberg, I can’t wait to watch you race again at JO”s!

Andi Taylor (13-14 Girls)

Andi joined us at JAG on Sunday for her 50 Fr where she made A final! Although it wasn’t a best time, it was a wonderful learning experience for Andi and she is hungry to snag her 1st sectional cut as well! The 50 fr wasn’t the only racing Andi participated in though, she anchored in the 800 Fr relay and the 400 Fr relay.

In the 800 Fr relay, she knocked off a second from her personal best and helped the team finish 5th. In the 400 Fr relay, she anchored the team to a 7th place finish just missing her personal best.

Max Wang (11-12 Boys)

Max has been on fire all season long, he continues to drop time and push himself and I couldn’t be more impressed. He walked away with 5 out of 6 best times, missing out on 6 best times by 0.07. His most impressive time drop though came in the 400 Fr where he dropped 10s off his best time which was set at the Mid May splash. Max, another great meet is behind us and another one is on the horizon. I hope you are as excited as I am for JO’s. Keep up the good work!

Sam Wang (11-12 Boys)

Sam was the only swimmer from Beach 5 to go 6 for 6 best times in his individual races, congratulations Sam! Just like his brother Sam continues to raise the bar for himself and he continues to leap over it! In total Sam walked away with 5 top 10 finishes and 62 individual points! Sam Keep up the good work, JO’s is looking very bright for you, and I can’t wait to see you drop even more time soon!

Senior 2
Senior 2 was represented by one relay-only swimmer.  Maddie Fu (13-14 Girls) did a great job representing the group.  She swam on three relays, all of which placed in the top 10.  She stepped up and swam the 100 fly leg on the 400 Medley Relay, and split almost three seconds faster than her best time that she swam earlier this month.  She also swam the fly leg on the 200 Medley Relay, and split one second faster than her best time on her leg of the 200 Free Relay.

Senior 3
Joshua Truong
Joshua had many great swims at JAG and really showed up big for the team. He got personal best times in all his events and dropped over 2 seconds in his main event, the 100 Breaststroke. He also had a blazing fast swim on the 200 Medley Relay where he split a 32.57 on his 50 M Breastroke. Way to go Josh! Keep up the great work and we hope to see you at the next championship meet.

Senior 4
Senior 4 did a great job at JAG. Everyone was able to participate even if it was only on relays. We went in unrested and still managed nearly all time drops and even grabbed a few more JO, Senior D and even a Sectional time. We also were able to grab a few swims at Finals and did a great job cheering for teammates and racing well!

Leo Antioco - Leo swam the 100 and 200 fly and put together great swims on both of them. Most impressive was his 200 fly where he did not completely fall apart on the last 100 and finished still looking really strong. Leo also got bumped up to the A medley relays and held his own and also had a great 100 Free leadoff swim in the 400 Free relay.

Anderson Bennett - Anderson swam the 200 breast and 1500 individually along with a handful of relays. Anderson put together a great 200 breast where he dropped 4 seconds and nabbed a second swim. At night he went even faster making great adjustments and dropping even more time closing in on a Sectional cut. On Monday Anderson swam his first long course mile and was fantastic for 1150 meters before falling off a bit but he almost matched his short course entered time!

Fred Brown - Fred swam the 100 free on Saturday morning and found himself close to a Sectional time on that going 56.9. That evening his teammates allowed him to leadoff the 200 Free A relay where he finally grabbed the Sectional time in his 50 free going 25.7. Fred was able to replicate his great 100 free again on Sunday evening anchoring the 400 free relay.

Evan Brutscher - Evan arrived at JAG with a full lineup and put up impressive swims for everything. He started with a nice drop in his 200 breast and then an even better 100 fly Friday morning which earned him a second swim where he dropped a bit more that evening going 1:04. On Saturday Evan grabbed a spot in the A final for the 100 back going 1:09 and dropping 3 seconds. Sunday Evan swam both the 100 breast and the 50 free where he dropped his 50 time under 28 for the first time and grabbed a swim at finals in that as well.

Audrey Lie - Audrey was only able to swim on Saturday where she added a bit of time in her 100 back going 1:16. That evening she helped on both 200 relays channeling her inner sprinter with a solid 32.8 split in her 50 fly and a 30.7 in the 50 free.

Chase Little - Chase came for relays 3 of the evenings. Coming off being sick Friday was a bit rough with a 1:01 100 free split but he bounced back Saturday on both 200 relays splitting 27 low in the 50 free. On Monday he got to race in everyone’s favorite 800 free relay going 2:16.

Heather O’Brien - Heather was another relay specialist helping us out 3 evenings. On Friday she anchored the 400 medley B relay going 1:06. On Saturday she bravely swam breaststroke on the medley relay and did a great job with that. She also anchored the 200 free relay, going an impressive 29.5 split. Monday evening was the 800 free relay where she anchored the B relay going 2:26.

Giulia Paganelli - Giulia swam Saturday on both 200 relays where she anchored the medley relay splitting a 30.2 and also anchored the 200 free B relay splitting 30.3. On Monday she swam her individual event which was the 200 back. While she was a bit off her best time she did split it well and did a good job working on underwater and stroke rate.

Pierce Ryan - Pierce was a huge help on Saturday swimming on the 200 free and medley relays. He led off the medley relay with a 32.06 backstroke split, finally having a good break and tempo! He also split a 28.2 on the 200 free relay to help that relay drop some time.

Ben Schlehuber - Ben was coming off being sick but had a great meet and finally showed that he can sprint with tempo. Friday evening he anchored a 400 medley relay going 1:00 in the 100 free with all kinds of tempo. On Saturday Ben had some sprinty 50s with a 27.5 on the medley then getting a bit tired with a 28 on the 200 free. Monday Ben swam his 200 back and 200 free. Ben dropped 5 seconds in his 200 free and dropped 6 seconds in prelims in his 200 back making finals. At finals he dropped another 4 seconds to win the consolation heat.

Ian Tumamak - Ian had a full lineup of swims and some really nice drops. He got a second swim in his 100 backstroke going 1:11 and replicating his leadoff swim from the 400 medley relay. In the 200 medley relay he had a nice 50 breast split of 36 and a 27.8 in the 200 free relay. Ian had a fantastic 400 IM that was unfortunately a questionable DQ but it was a really well put together. On Monday he had a great 200 IM dropping 4 seconds going 2:32.

Senior 5
Senior 5 had a fantastic JAG meet with multiple scoring swims and new qualifying cuts.

Ethan Hott was a relay stalwart, representing on the 800 Free Relay, 200 Medley Relay, and the 200 Free Relay, scoring valuable TEAM points as a member of the 800 Free Relay (10th).  He also competed individually in the 200 FLY, just missing a new best time.

Catalina Kahan fought off illness to swim on four relays and three individual events.  In spite of her illness, Catalina was right on her best times in her individual events, and showed why she is a great teammate, swimming on scoring relays in the 200 Medley Relay (2nd), the 800 Free Relay (7th), the 400 Free Relay (9th), and 200 Free Relay (10th).

Emery Arnold also fought off illness to be another fantastic teammate, coming through for the TEAM on more than one relay.  While she swam on four scoring relays:  200 Medley Relay (6th), 400 Medley Relay (8th), 400 Free Relay (9th), and 200 Free Relay (10th), she was also able to swim a best time in the 200 BR.

Andy Pham swam four events and swam best times in all four of them.  Andy Pham qualified for finals in two of events.  Four events… Five best times.  That’s an excellent meet.  He earned 15th in the 200 BK(2:24.72), and 15th in the 100 BK(1:04.79).  In addition, he swam on the 15th place 400 Medley Relay, the 13th place 200 FR Relay, the 10th place 800 FR Relay, and the 9th place 200 Medley Relay.

High Performance
Well, we got off to a bit of a rocky start with some questionable DQs, but with some great mid season unrested racing. We were missing a few athletes from the group, but the ones that were in attendance did a great job. All these athletes also contributed in a great way in their respective relays over the course of the weekend.  We ended up 3rd overall combined, even with a few fumbles, kids were out sick, and more than our fair share of  DQs. All in all, sitting above 80% on our best times.

Bella Brito - (97pts) 2IM Best time, 100Fly Best time and a top 5 national rank, 100 Free Best time, 50 Best time, 100 Breast & 200 Breast were best times by a smidge (DQs) that were overturned.  So, best times all around and added a great deal of value to her 13/14 Relays.

Tyler Campbell - (26 pts) Tyler had some big swims and displayed some great character by allowing a teammate to take his spot on the relay, so that he could make another attempt at a Sectional Cut….way to go Dr. Campbell. He also had best times in 2IM, big 7 second drop in 200 Breast, shaved some time off his 100 Free, and a super fast 50 on the relay, cracking 25.

Mia Crisera - (52 pts) Mia had an amazing meet considering she was coming off of a bout with COVID and being out of the water for over a week leading up to the meet.
