2022 Summer JOs Recap
Junior Olympics (July 21-24, 2022)
Every heat was a “Hot Heat” in Riverside last weekend, whether you were referring to the quality of racing or the air temperature (not to mention a couple of nearby fires). Despite the challenging conditions, our young women and men raced bravely and posted some amazing results!
Among the highlights:
Anderson Bennett with his first Sectionals cut (200 Breast)
Gabi Brito with her first Futures cut (50 Free)
Meagan Gordon with her first Sectionals cut (50 Free)
Peyton Kuo with his first Futures cut (50 Free)
11-12 Girls and Boys sweeping the relays (WHAT!?)
11-12 Girls completing the “quad” by setting the team record in the 400 Free Relay and scaring a couple of SCS records in the 200 Free/Medley Relays
The team competition was very competitive, with BCS finishing 4th overall (2nd through 5th place was decided by about 100 points). The Men grabbed some hardware with their 3rd place finish and the Women came in at 4th.
Congratulations to all of the athletes on a gritty performance! Enjoy the rest of the highlights below!
Beach 1
Sellers Stough (7-10 Boys)
Mr. Stough was Mr. Consistency on the two 7-10 Boys relays, dropping Freestyle splits of 38.2 and 38.4, which is right around his best flat start time in the event. Each swim propped that relay to a top 5 finish, putting a big chunk of points on the board for the team! Congratulations on an outstanding season, Sellers!
Beach 2
Beach 2 took a small group of athletes to Riverside for Summer Jo’s. We had 1 Individual qualifier and 3 relay-only athletes! This was a great experience for the kids but the most important aspect of the weekend was all the fun that was had. Our 10 and Under relays competed Friday afternoon during finals in the 220 Fr relay and the 200 Medley relay.
Our girl's relay finished 4th in the 200 Fr Relay and 3rd in the 200 Medley relay scoring a total of 62 points for our team! Our boy's relay finished 4th in the 200 Fr Relay and 5th in the 200 Medley Relay scoring a total of 58 Points for our team!
David Arnold – 10 and Under Boys
David was our only individual qualifier in beach 2, he snagged his JO cut at Pac Champs the week before. At Summer Jo’s on Saturday he was able to match his best time which is no easy feat! In his relays though David produced two big swims! In the 200 Fr relay, he led off by splitting 36.06, knocking 2 seconds off his previous best. During the 200 Medley relay, he lead off again and matched his best 50 Back time. Congratulations David, I hope you enjoyed your experience at Summer JO’s, there will be more in the future!
John Arnold – 10 and Under Boys
John joined us at riverside Friday afternoon for his 2 relay Swims. He was part of our 10 and under boys relay. In the 200 Fr relay, John went second behind his brother and split a 38.96s, knocking almost 4 whole seconds off his best time! During the Medley relay, he swam the breaststroke leg splitting a 56.59 which is a couple of seconds from his best. The next goal for John is snagging individual qualifiers at Jo’s!
Aria Kim – 10 and Under Girls
Aria also joined us Friday afternoon for her two relay swims, and boy oh boy did she turn up! During the 200 Fr relay, Aria was our anchor and she split a blistering 34.0, which is 6.5 seconds faster than her recorded best! In the 200 Medley Relay are led off with a 50 BK and she split a 42.34, knocking 2.5s off her previous best! It’s safe to say Aria likes to race especially with her teammates!
Piper Sootkoos – 10 and Under Girls
Friday night at Riverside was the place to be and Piper showed us why! She was also part of our 10 and Under girls relay team. In the 200 Fr Relay Piper was our 3rd leg and she split 36.6, that’s almost 2s faster than her previous best! During the Medley Relay, she was the anchor and her Freestyle split 37.1, which is still a whole 1s faster than her recorded best 50 Fr time. Piper the future is bright and I can’t wait to watch you race more!
Beach 3
Mazie Adams (11-12 Girls)
Miss Adams rebounded from an illness, which forced her out of the Pac Comm Champs meet the prior weekend, to throw down a couple of amazing 50 Freestyle splits of 32.9 and 32.5 on the 12th place 200 Free Relay and the 13th place 200 Medley Relay, respectively. These splits were 1.2-1.6 seconds faster than her best flat start time and, as coaches, we only expect our athletes to be about 0.7 seconds faster than a flat start in a relay. Can’t wait to see what she can do in her individual races at this Saturday’s Finale! Strong showing, Mazie!
Penny Chiu (11-12 Girls)
Miss Chiu was a relay stalwart at JOs, with three very strong scoring performances as a member of the 200 Free, 200 Medley and 400 Medley. On the 12th place 200 Free Relay, she split 31.9, nearly a second faster than her best flat start. On the 13th place 200 Medley Relay, she threw down a 42.5 Breaststroke split, also a second faster than her best flat start in that event. Finally, she rocked a 1:27 Butterfly split on the 12th place 400 Medley Relay, which was more than 8 seconds faster than her best 100 Fly! Really excited about the 2022-23 season for this young up-and-comer. Congratulations on a fantastic season, Penny!
Talia Cistone (11-12 Girls)
Miss Cistone came into JOs a bit tired, as a brief illness and some hard racing at Pac Comm Champs finally caught up with her. Although her split wasn’t what she hoped it would be, she contributed a very solid Breaststroke leg as a member of the 12th place 400 Medley Relay team. She is beginning to learn what hard work looks like and we anticipate that she will be a leader in the Beach 3 group in the new season. Let’s keep this momentum going, Talia!
Hana Imai (7-10 Girls)
After a disappointing DQ in her first race (100 Fly), Miss Imai turned it around and qualified for three Finals: 50 Breast (12th), 200 IM (16th) and 100 Breast (13th). To boot, she dropped ~1.4 seconds in the 50 Free as the leadoff leg of the 4th place 200 Free Relay and split nearly a second faster than her best flat start in the 50 Breast as a member of the 3rd place 200 Medley Relay. All in all, it was a great summer of racing for her, and she is looking forward to the challenge of the 11-12 age group in the fall! Way to go, Hana!
Hailey Kuo (7-10 Girls)
Miss Kuo Finaled in two of her three individual races, before an illness kept her out of the competition on the final day. She saw a major improvement of nearly 5 seconds in the 100 Fly (11th) on her first day and posted a big swim in the 50 Fly on her last day to drop about half a second and win the B Final (9th). Her splits as a member of the 4th place 200 Free Relay and 3rd place 200 Medley Relay were also right on her best flat start times. Excited to see what you will do in the new season, Hailey!
Patrick Wang (7-10 Boys)
Mr. Wang gets the Ironman award for this particular meet, completing 14 races in just three days of competition in grueling conditions, without complaining once. Standout swims included a 7th place finish in the 100 Breast (-4.99), 7th place in the 50 Breast (-1.35), and 3rd place in the 50 Fly (-3.34). He Finaled in each of his 6 individual races and blazed to two top 5 finishes as a member of the 200 Free Relay and 200 Medley Relay, where he threw down a HUGE split of 32.6 on the Butterfly leg (~2.3 seconds faster than his best). Once again, his positive energy was his superpower and we could not have asked for a better performance from this young man. Great effort, Patrick!
Beach 4
Beach 4 was represented by one swimmer. Alex Miyashita qualified for JOs at Pac Champs the week before. He was already scheduled to participate on all of the relays. Alex qualified in both breaststroke races. He made his JO debut in the 50 breaststroke, dropping over a second and qualifying for finals. He ended up finishing 16th in the event. In the 100 breaststroke, Alex added time, which is common considering he just made the cut time a week prior. Alex helped the 11-12 boys sweep all four relays at the meet. He also split best times in all four of the relays, finally breaking the 1:10 barrier in the 100 free leg of the 400 Freestyle Relay. Congratulations Alex on an amazing first JO meet!
Beach 5
Beach 5, I don’t know where to start! I always knew we were going to have a good Summer Jo’s but you blew my expectations out of the water. So I want to start by saying thank you for your commitment this summer and thank you for being you, I am immensely proud of every member of our group! Now let’s see how well you did! In total Beach 5 walked away with 51 New individual best times, many of them coming in the morning and then swimming even faster at night! Beach 5 also walked away with 582.5 individual points between them all! However, the biggest accomplishment for the group was both our 11-12 Girls and Boys A relay went undefeated in all 4 relays! Special shout out to Alex Miyashita from Beach 4 who was a vital member of the boy's relay team! Beach 5 it’s safe to say you crushed it, enjoy your break and then let’s take on short course season! Oh and I think the girl’s relay would be upset if I didn’t mention that they now own all four BCS 11-12 Girls relay Records, History makers!
Eryn Arnold – 11-12 Girls
Eryn has been racing tremendously all season long and summer Jo’s did not disappoint, she walked with 100% best times, 100% A finals, and only finished outside the top 3 once! Eryn didn’t stop there though, she put in some huge swims in our relays to help the girls secure maximum points all four times. Her best race of the weekend for me was her 100 Breast, after swimming a smart Prelims swim, we came up with a plan for finals. The plan was executed perfectly but she narrowly missed out on her Futures cut! Eryn, it has been a joy to watch you race all season long, your commitment to the race plan has been impeccable and your desire to learn and get better is contagious. The future is bright, but remember you swim your best when you are having fun!
Gabi Brito – 11-12 Girls
Gabi, you ended the season with a bang, you showed everyone that size does not matter, what matters is who’s willing to fight and race the hardest in the pool! It was a joy to watch you race all weekend long. Gabi made A finals in all her events, and she walked away with 4 victories, 1 Silver, and 4thh placed finish, she was the highest individual points scored for the meet. Gabi also left the meet with 2 more sectional cuts and a new orange cap! She led off our 200 Fr relay and split a blistering 27.33s grabbing her 1st future’s cut in the process. Not too bad for a girl who only just turned 12! Gabi now our focus shifts to short course, and I couldn’t be more excited to continue working with you!
Jake Everitt – 13-14 Boys
This was Jake's first Jo’s as a 13-year-old and he rose to the challenge. Jake made finals in the 200 Fly and the 100 Fly. In the 200 Fly, he matched his Personal best in finals which he achieved at Pac Champs, that’s a huge win in my book. In the 100 Fly, he was able to knock off 1.46s off his personal best. Now his sights are set on his 1st sectional cut. Jake also was a huge part of our 13-14 boys relay team, he helped our A relay finished 2nd in the 200 Fr relay, where he anchored splitting 26.36! That’s a whole second faster than his recorded best time! Now Jake is looking forward to short course season, and I’m sure he has set big goals for himself, and I’m excited to watch him achieve those goals.
Megan Gordon – 11-12 Girls
This was Meagan’s last meet as a 12-year-old, and she made sure to leave the 11-12 age group on a bang! Meagan was a vital part of our 11-12 girls A relay, helping the team secure 4 wins from 4 and solidifying their names on the BCS record board. Meagan’s successes didn’t stop there though, on her final Individual race of the weekend she snagged her sectional cut in the 50 Fr, going 28.68s! However, from a coach's perspective, her best race of the weekend was her 100Fly in Prelims. After taking a break from swimming fly, she came to Jo’s and knocked 3.5s off her personal best time. Meagan, I’m very proud of you and the work you have put in this summer, and I can’t wait to watch you race in the 13-14 age group!
Avalon Kim – 13-14 Girls
Avalon, qualified for two individual events at Jo’s, the 200 Back and the 100 Back. On the first day, she raced the 200 Bk and she dropped 1.3s off her best time. During her individual 100 Back she was just off her best which she achieved at JAG a few weekends ago! Avalon was also part of our girl's 13-14 relay squad, where she put in some big swims. During the 200 Medley relay, she led off the girls and dropped just under a second off her best time, but her biggest swim came in the 400 Fr relay at the end of the meet Sunday. Avalon split 1:09.70, going under the 1:10 barrier for the first time and knocking 2s off her personal best time.
Zoey Lewis – 11-12 Girls
Zoey competed in 3 individual events at Summer Jo’s and she was part of our 11-12 Girls B relay. During her 3 individual events, she was right on her best times, but in the relays, she stood out! In the 200 Fr relay, she split 32.61, going a new best time in the process, which helped our girls finish 12th and scored valuable points for the team! Now our sights move to short course, and I have a feeling Zoey will be seeing a lot of time drops in her future!
Soraya Lluz – 11-12 Girls
Soraya qualified for 2 individual events at Summer Jo’s, she raced in the 50 and 100 Backstroke. Adding to our backstroke depth! In the 100 Back Raya dropped over 2s from her previous best and in the 50 Bk, she was right off her best time which she achieved the week before at Pac Champs. The fast swimming didn’t stop there though, Raya also produced fast swims in our 11-12 Girls relay. She helped the Girls B team knock 5s off their seed time in the 400 Medley where she swam the freestyle leg. She split a 1:10.7, to knock a second and a half of her best time. Raya, I’m excited to see what short course has in store for you!
Marin Lohner – 13-14 Girls
Marin made the trip out to Riverside on Friday to join the 13-14 Girls A relay, and I and the team are very appreciative of that! Marin took part in the 200 Medley relay, where she swam the Breaststroke leg. She split a 43.8 and helped our girl's team finish 16th, scoring valuable points for the team! Thank you, Marin, for your commitment to the team, and thank you, parents, for making the drive out to Riverside! But now it’s time to get your individual swims at our next championship meet, look out WAG, Marin is coming!
Gabby Nicholas – 13-14 Girls
Gabby came to JO’s as a relay-only athlete and she was on all four of the girls 13-14 A relay team. Gabby made sure to make those races count! In the 200 Medley relay, Gabby swam the fly leg and she knocked 4 seconds off her best time, and in the 400 Fr relay, she led off the relay and split a 1:07.2 almost knocking .8 off her previous best times. Gabby is another one who is looking towards WAG and snagging individual qualifiers, short course season is going to be fun!
Alejandro Safa – 13-14 Boys
Alejandro qualified for 1 individual race at summer Jo’s and that was the 200 Back. Alejandro knocked another 2.5 seconds off his previous best which came at Pac champs the week before, that’s not easy to do! Alejandro was also part of the 13-14 Boys 800 Free B relay, where he split 2:21.95, just coming in under his best of 2:22.00. Alejandro once we return from our break I see big things happening for you in the pool!
Kayla Sun – 11-12 Girls
Kayla had an amazing Summer Jo’s, she would consistently swim fast in the morning and then swim faster at night. For every final, she swam in she was considerably faster at night, and that’s what finals are all about! Kayla walked away with 5 out 6 finals swims and 5 out of 6 new best times. That’s a successful meet in anybody’s eyes. Kayla was the fourth member of the 11-12 Girls A relay and just like her teammates he put in some huge swims. One of her biggest swims came in the 200 Fr relay where she split 28.92, that was Kayla’s first time under 29 seconds! Our Age group girls are looking very strong and Kayla now has her eyes set on her first sectional cut!
Max Wang – 11-12 Boys
Max’s individual races all came on Saturday and Sunday, so on the last two days he had to swim 6 individual prelims swims, 6 finals swims, and 2 relays. So it was a busy Saturday and Sunday for him, but he rose to the challenge and walked away with 5 new personal best times and 4 top 5 finishes! He was also part of the boys 11-12 A relay team which went undefeated for the weekend scoring a maximum of 160 points for the team!
Sam Wang – 11-12 Boys
Sam also had his individual races fall on the last two days of the meet, and just like his brother, he didn’t let that deter him. Sam walked away with 6 final swims and 2 new best times! Sam also joined his brother on the 11-12 Boys A relay and swam with courage and heart to help keep the boys undefeated. His biggest swim came in the 400 medley relay where he anchored and split a 1:04.40 for his freestyle, which gave us a lead of over 3s from the team in 2nd. Short course season is looking promising for Sam and these young gentlemen!
Danny Zimmerman – 11-12 Boys
Danny came to Jo’s with two things on his mind, racing hard and winning! He accomplished both of these. Danny walked away with 100% best times, 3 individual golds, and 4 relay golds! Danny was our highest individual points scorer for the boys, narrowly coming in 2nd overall to his fellow Beach 5 swimmer Gabi. Practice is going to be fun when we return! However, Danny again showed off his best asset, which is being the ultimate hype man. After taking care of business in his events, he was there to cheer on his teammates all weekend long. Danny your character was on full display over the weekend and it was a pleasure to watch! Now let’s get some more wins and best times this short course season!
Senior 2
Senior 2 was represented by two relay only swimmers: Maddie Fu and Tiffany Li. These girls teamed up with two of their other teammates on the second relay of the weekend, the 200 Freestyle Relay. Unfortunately, the relay was disqualified but Maddie split right on her best time and Tiffany split more than a second faster than her best time. Maddie continued on with the weekend, swimming on the other three relays. She split a best time in the 50 free on the 200 Medley Relay, a best time in the 100 breaststroke on the 400 Medley relay (dropping over a second) and finished off the weekend with over a two second drop on her split for the 100 free on the 400 Freestyle Relay.
Senior 3
Lucas Ro
Recovering from a major injury, Lucas swam in 2 events at JOs, the 100 Breast and 200 Breast. We are happy to have Lucas back and racing. Great job Lucas!
Bella Tieman
Bella was back at it this weekend swimming in 2 relays: the 400 Medley and 400 Free relay. She went a personal best time of 1:09.28 in the 100 Free. Great job Bella!
Senior 4
Senior 4 sent most of the group to Riverside in some fashion for either individual events or relays. There were mostly best times, a new Sectional cut in the 200 Breast from Anderson Bennett, and a lot of great racing across the board.
Leo Antioco - Leo started off the meet with an amazing 200 Fly dropping almost 5 seconds and pacing it really well. Probably one of the best 200 Flys I’ve seen come from this group. Leo added a bit in his 100 free but then came back that evening to throw down a 27.5 50 fly split. On Saturday Leo swam his 100 fly and dropped .76 in another solid swim.
Anderson Bennett - Anderson started his meet on Friday with a lightning quick 100 Breast, dropping .8 and going 1:12.74. On Saturday he was able was to replicate his 100 Breast time again 1:12 in the 400 Medley relay. Sunday - despite having to swim in the last heat with no one to race Anderson put together a phenomenal 200 Breast going 2:35.18 and grabbing a swim in the A Final and a new Sectional time. That evening he added a bit in Finals but still went a Sectional time again!
Fred Brown - Fred swam the 200 Back on Thursday where he dropped about 4 seconds from his LCM time and then later swam the 100 Free where he dropped .25 going 56.69. That evening he went a best time in the 200 Free on the 800 Free Relay. Friday evening he lead off the 200 Free relay and split a best time of 25.55 and anchored the 200 Medley relay with a 25.18. Saturday Fred anchored the 400 Medley with another 56 before heading off to Sectionals on Sunday.
Evan Brutscher - Evan started JOs with a 3.8 second drop in his 200 Back splitting it pretty well and not trailing off on the last half. On Friday he grabbed a second swim in the 100 Breast where he finished 10th going 1:16.08 with a 2.5 second drop. Evan lead off the 13/14 Boys A 200 Medley relay which was unfortunately DQ’d. On Saturday he was right on his best time in the 100 Fly and then also lead off the 400 Medley A Relay which finished 3rd. Sunday Evan was right on his best time in the 50 free.
Audrey Lie - Audrey started JOs on Thursday with the 200 Back with a bit of an add but held her last 3 50 splits closer together than usual. On Sunday Audrey returned to race the 100 Back with another slight add but she did a great job of working on tempo for the shorter race.
Chase Little - Chase kicked off JOs by anchoring the 800 Free relay with a best time 2:11. Friday evening Chase anchored the 200 Medley Relay with a best time of 26.6. Finally Sunday evening Chase split a best time 58.4 on the 400 Free relay. Chase gets credit for hanging out all weekend and cheering on teammates prelims and finals!!
Heather O’Brien - Heather had just grabbed her first 15 and Over JO cut at Pac Champs in the 100 Free so the slight add she had Thursday at JOs wasn’t a huge shock but always fun to swimmers there even if its only for one event.
Pierce Ryan - Pierce swam his 200 Back on Thursday was .08 off the best time he had gone the weekend before so a good replication to do again with his first 15 and Over JOs.
Ben Schlehuber - -Ben kicked off Thursday with 3 events including the 1500. Ben added a bit on his 200 back but had a big drop in his 100 Free going under 1:00 for a 59.0. Later that day he swam his 1500 dropping another few seconds from last weekend with a 19:11. Ben also lead off the 800 Free B relay with a 2:11. He was able to replicate that 2:11 the next day in his individual event then split some 27.7s on the 200 relays. Saturday he had a great 400 free dropping nearly 30 seconds and going 4:39, just missing out on a second swim opportunity. Ben continued to put together solid swims and relay splits.
Ian Tumamak - Ian had big drops in every event! He started off with a 6.6 second drop in his 200 back then an 11 second drop in the 200 fly going 2:33! On Friday he snagged a second swim in the 400 IM going 5:18 in the morning then 5:17 in the evening with a total of a 14 second drop. In his 100 Fly he dropped 2.2 to go a 1:08 then had another nice swim with his 200 IM going 2:31. Ian also had a great 100 Back dropping 2.2 in that as well going 1:08. Ian was also a huge help on all the relays.
Senior 5
Senior 5 had some amazing highs and some crushing lows at JOs. It was a very successful meet and I was very pleased with the energy and support everyone showed for each other. We had some great swims, including Peyton earning his first FUTURES cut in the 50 FR, and Tiara getting under 30 in the 50 for the first ever. We also had Ethan swim a best in the 1500 and Kotaro earn a Sectional cut in the 400 FR. Catalina narrowly missed dipping up the elusive 60 second mark in 100 FR.
We also had some lows during the meet, with Andy swimming a best time in finals of the 100 BK but kicking past 15 meters… Lucas swimming a best time in the 200 FR in the relay, swimming an even better time in prelims, just missing the Sectional cut in finals, and finally time trialing the darn thing only to miss the cut by .2 (His coach was crushed… he was much more measured). And the crushing low was Catalina falling in the locker room and injuring her knee before finals on Sunday.
Thankfully she is up and moving and will most likely make a full recovery.
