Assessment & Camp Information

 

In July & August, the Richmond Rapids will be holding summer camps for children 6-15 years old.   

Non-members are eligible to register May 14-June 27.

  • Non-members must be assessed before registering.
    • Any children who participated in Rapids camps before but did not register for the 2023-2024 season must be assessed again. 
  • Following a successful assessment, you will be provided with:
  1. ​Your child's assessed level, their eligible camps and online registration instructions. 
  2. An email to login into the Rapids website to register for summer camps.

Assessment Dates & Location

May 14 - June 27 at Watermania

  • Tuesdays & Thursdays from 4pm -5pm 
  • No assessments June 25th.

Assessment procedures:

1. Arrive at Watermania 5 minutes prior to the assessment time & inform the front desk staff you are there to complete a Richmond Rapids Assessment.

2. Proceed to the pool deck via the changerooms.  No street shoes are allowed on the pool deck.

3. Meet the Rapids Summer Camp Leader at the Rapids office. Assessments will occur in the shallow end, in the lane closest to the bleachers. 

4. All swimmers must be prepared to swim when they arrive and have proper fitting goggles and swimsuit.

5. If the swimmer meets the minimum requirements for our summer camps and space is available, then further registration instructions will be provided.  


 

 

Available Summer Camps

Rapids Summer Swim School 

  • Introductory swim lessons for children 6-10 years old.
  •  Two-week sessions during July & August. Monthly options are available for levels 1 & 2. 
  • The minimum requirement is that children swim 25 meters of front and back crawl unassisted. (Approx equivalent to Red Cross Level 4 completed. See the information page for full details. 

Intro to Competitive Swimming Skills & Technique Camps 

  • The camp will focus on skills and techniques used in competitive swimming.
  • Swimmers will be exposed to all four competitive strokes, starts & turns.
  • There are two levels in this camp based on age.
  • The Blue Camp will be for children 11 years old and younger that are currently at the Rapids RSS 4, TD, AGD 1,
  • The Red Camp will be for children 12-15 years old at the Youth 1 (Non-LMR qualified) Youth Fitness or Senior Fitness level
  • An approximate equivalent is children that have completed Red Cross 10 or Swimmer 9/ Junior Lifeguard club or Ability to swim 100 meters Freestyle, Backstroke & Breaststroke. Knowledge of dolphin kick and/or Butterfly.

 

INDIVIDUAL STROKE TECHNIQUE CAMPS

  • These one-week camps in August will specialize in techniques for individual strokes. 
  • These camps are open to Rapids swimmers in RSS 4, TD, AGD, Youth 1, Youth 2, Youth 3, Senior Regional & Senior Fitness, Senior Provincial.
  • Camps will be divided up by age and ability. 
    • White - RSS 4, TD,  AGD1, and  Youth 1 - non LMR qualified
    • Black -  AGD 2 & Up and  AGD 1 & Youth - 1 LMR qualified swimmers
  • Swimmers from other Swim BC clubs must be at least LMR qualified and have previously competed at a regional meet. Proof of time is required. Email Dennis Silva at [email protected]. An assessment may be required.

COMPETITION STARTS  TECHNIQUE SESSIONS

  • Small group class sessions will be available in August for starts and turn techniques. 
  • These are available for Rapids swimmers (RSS 3 & higher) and swimmers registered with a Swim BC club. 

REGIONAL COMPETITIVE JULY CAMP 

  • Skill & endurance development for Swim BC registered swimmers
  • Swimmers must be LMR qualified.
  • Rapids levels AGD 2, AGD 3, Youth 2, SR Regional.
  • AGD 1 & Youth 1 swimmers who are LMR qualified are also eligible for this camp.
  • There will be two camps based on age. 11 & Under and a 12 & over camp
  • Swimmers from Swim BC clubs must be at least LMR qualified and have previously competed at a regional meet. Proof of time is required. Email Dennis Silva at [email protected]. An assessment may be required.

NATIONAL & PROVINCIAL SWIMMERS TRAINING (July)

  • The National Camp is for swimmers in the Rapids National group. 
  • The Provincial Camp is for swimmers currently in Youth 3 & SRP.  Youth 2 swimmers that are qualified for the Swim BC Provincial Championship. Swimmers are eligible for this camp. Some swimmers not meeting these criteria may be invited at the discretion of a senior coach. 
  • Swimmers are expected to participate in the Surrey Knights Summerfest meet from July 27-28.
