Karl Krug - Head Coach 

Head Coach Karl Krug has been around swimming for more than 20 years both as a swimmer and a coach in multiple capacities. While in high school, he was one of the first people to ever break the 20 second barrier in the 50 free and was an instrumental part in winning national high school championships and junior national championships. He swam at Auburn University where he was an 11 time All-American, National Champion and 4 time SEC champion. 

He has also reached one of the highest levels in International Competition winning a bronze medal at the 2015 World Championships.

On the coaching side, he has coached all ages and ability levels and coached many high school state champions and Olympic trial qualifiers, National Record Holders and a National Junior Team Member. He was named Coach of the Month by SwimSwam for helping lead SPAC back to competition during the 2020 COVID Pandemic and safely return the team to nationally recognized competition. He is a Level 4 certified ASCA coach with a degree in Sociology and Political Science from Auburn University. Married to Emily Krug, who also was a member of the Auburn Univeristy Swim and Dive team. Together they have one child, Maverick. 

 

 

Josh Hanson - Lead Senior Coach

 

Coach Josh has been involved in the sport of swimming for over 12 years. He swam and was a team captain at Gardner-Webb University, where he helped the team reach second in their Conference and top 5 in the nation in team GPA. As a coach, he has coached summer league teams for over 6 years. He was the Graduate Assistant at Converse College for 2 years and most recently was the Assistant Coach at Oklahoma Baptist University for 2 years. He has a Bachelor's Degree in Middle School Math Education from Gardner-Webb University.

 


 

 

 

Fred Stearns - Lead Age Group Coach

 

Coach Fred is thrilled to coach for the Spartans! He has 9 years of coaching experience with the Winding Vista Vipers and the Zaban Sharks. He was named the Coach of the Year in 2016 with the Atlanta Swim Association. Additionally he served as a Site Director with Dynamo Swim Club where he coached beginner and intermediate athletes. 

Coach Fred is a 2010 graduate of the University of Georgia with a BA in International Relations and Russian. He swam with the IM Club at UGA and currently swims with the ASL Master's league.

 
 
 
 
 
 
 
Jack Stearns - Age Group Coach

 

Coach Jack was born and raised in Atlanta, GA and fell in love with swimming at a very young age at his summer swim pool. He began teaching swim lessons in 2011 at Dynamo while attending school at Georgia State University. From there he went on to manage the swim school at Chamblee and direct the swim school in Dunwoody. He has been coaching since 2015, and has been with Spartan Aquatics since 2019. 

Jack graduated from Georgia State University with a Bachelor of Science in Geology and a Bachelor of Business Administration in Finance. 

 
 
 
 

 

Amanda Tarpley – Spartans/Little Spartans Lead Coach

 

Coach Amanda has over 25 years of experience as a swim coach and instructor. She joined the SPAC staff in 2022 after coaching at an Atlanta area club for 16 years. Amanda’s passion is introducing kids to swimming and facilitating a love for the sport. Amanda was born and raised in Lilburn, GA and began her swimming career in the Atlanta area, and later swam in college for the Division I University of Kentucky Wildcats. It was there that she obtained her Bachelor’s degree in Nursing and Social Work as well as her Masters in Social Work. She has recently graduated with her degree as a Family Nurse Practitioner, and is back in school working on her Doctorate in Nursing at Brenau University. Amanda also works as one of the RN’s here at GAC as well as faculty at Brenau’s School of Nursing. Amanda is married to GAC alum, Joel Tarpley, and they have 4 children.

 
 
 
 
 
 
Sabine Stoffle - Senior Coach

 

 

Coach Sabine has been involved with either coaching or teaching lessons for the last 18 years. Sabine grew up in the northeast and swam for Division 1 American University. While at American, the team was the CAA conference champions for 2 consecutive years, and Sabine was a top 3 finisher in the 200 back at the championships. She was also a Junior National qualifier in the IM events. Sabine is married with 4 children. Her oldest sons, Aidan and Nathaniel, attend and swim for Auburn University. Her youngest two, Samantha and Brendan, swim for SPAC and Brookwood HS. Sabine has a Bachelor's degree in International Relations and Master's degree in International Development and Education. She currently works as a 4th grade teacher at Gwin Oaks Elementary School in Gwinnett County. 

 

 
 
 
 
Alex Taylor - Senior, Age Group Coach

 

Born and raised in Snellville, GA, Alex grew up swimming and coaching in the Gwinnett county school system at Brookwood High School as well as swimming year around at local clubs. He was a member of the first of many recent Brookwood State Championship teams and still holds several school records. He competed at the 2016 US Olympic swimming Trials in the 200 IM. Alex also swam for 4 years at the University of Kentucky where he was an SEC Championship finalist. He graduated in 2020 with a Bachelor’s of Science in Kinesiology. 

 

 

 

 

 

Angel Sosa - Director of Athletic Development

 

Coach Angel is thrilled to be entering his second year with Spartans Aquatic Club. Angel is a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) through the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) and has been coaching in strength conditioning for four years. Beginning his career in his senior year of undergraduate school as an assistant and future head strength coach for Georgia Military College JUCO Football program where in his one year there helped to see 7 players sign and leave for several NCAA Division 1 schools. Along with getting his Masters in Health and Human Performance, Angel spent two years as a graduate assistant and head strength coach for Georgia College and State University. Following earning his Masters in 2021, Angel had a brief summer stint at Wesleyan School as an assistant and then found his way to the Spartans Aquatic Club for fall 2021 and on. Though collegiate strength and conditioning was where he started, Angel has found a passion for middle and high school athletics and is proud and thankful to be a part of SPAC. 

 

 

 

Max Carlson - Spartans/Little Spartans Coach

We are excited to announce Max Carlson as the Spartan’s assistant coach and Lead coach of our Little Spartan’s Group! Max is no stranger to the water; he has been a part of the swimming community for 15 years in different areas. He is the Head Coach for Woods of Parkview, and he also recently completed his 5-year stint as the assistant swim coach for Hanarry West. Max is currently finishing his Senior year at Emory University. He is majoring in physics and plans to become a teacher, with the long-term goal of eventually becoming a college professor.
