Join Heat Masters Swim Team!

Work hard, swim fast, and have FUN when you join the Heat Masters Swim Team!

What is Masters Swimming?

In swimming, Masters simply means you are 18 years of age or older! U.S. Masters Swimming is a national membership nonprofit that provides membership benefits to nearly 60,000 Masters swimmers across the country, who swim as part of its 52 Local Masters Swimming Committees (LMSCs), and more than 1,200 Masters Swimming clubs and workout groups. For Heat Masters, we are part of the Great Lakes Zone, the Illinois LMSC, and our club is the Stephens Family YMCA. Be sure to follow Heat Masters on Facebook. Join us here.

Why Join Masters?

  • Train with a Masters Level III Coach
  • Enjoy workouts tailored for different abilities
  • Learn stroke efficiency through technique work on all four competitive strokes
  • Have fun swimming with a talented team ranging in age from 18 to 99+ years old
  • Great for competitive swimmers, open water swimmers, triathletes, or anyone looking to be fitter and more efficient in the water!
  • Two coached practices per week plus a mid-week workout emailed to the team.
  • Numerous opportunities to participate in USA Masters Swimming sanctioned events and competitions

Do I Have to be an Expert to Join Masters?

No! Masters coaches and swimmers don't care how fast you are or how much experience you have! In nearly every Masters program, including ours, there are swimmers of similar ability or those who started where you are and have improved. Don't let your perceived ability, or lack thereof, hold you back! Although it's important to have a physical exam before starting any exercise routine, you don't need to be in shape to start Masters swimming... Masters swimming will help you get there!

When is Practice?

We practice at the Stephens Family YMCA twice per week.

  • Fridays from 7-8:30 p.m.
  • Sunday from 1:30-3:00 p.m.

In addition to two coached workouts per week, the team receives a weekly "on your own" workout. Many of our swimmers meet up outside of organized practice hours to swim on their own during open lap swim times at the Stephens Family YMCA.

Who is the Masters Coach?

Tina Johnson is the Heat Masters coach. Tina is a Masters Level III Coach and has 15+ years of coaching experience ranging from age group through adult swimmers. She is also an ISR Self-Rescue Instructor.

I'm Convinced! Now What?

We encourage you to try out our Masters program! Come join us at an upcoming practice! Reach out to Coach Tina for more information (tina at [email protected]) if you have questions! And, if you're ready to compete, be sure to also become a member of U.S. Masters Swimming (required to participate in sanctioned Masters swim meets).
