FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Where are lessons located?
All lessons take place at the SJPS Aquatic Center, located behind Lutcher High School. From W Main Street, turn onto Bulldog Avenue (between Lutcher High and SJPS Schoolboard Office), and continue until reaching the Aquatic Center, located on the left side of the street.
What is the focus of your lessons program?
We believe swimming is a life skill. Our curriculum is organized with survival skills at its forefront - including but not limited to breath control, floating, and overall comfort in the water - and followed by competitive swimming skills. A comfortable swimmer is a confident and safe swimmer!
How old must my swimmer be in order to participate?
We allow enrollment as early as 3 years of age. As with any children's activity, remember that patience plays a large role, especially for younger participants!
Can my child be enrolled for competitive swimming education?
We love competitive swimming as much as we love water safety! Visit us before or during your summer or high school season to get a head start on your competition.
How do I know if my enrollment has processed?
A confirmation receipt will be emailed to the account used to complete registration. If you did not receive a reciept, your enrollment was not processed.
What does my swimmer need to participate?
Participants under age 3 or those not potty trained are required to wear a non-disposable swim diaper for lessons. Goggles are allowed once participants prove comfort in the water without them, so long as the pair does not cover the nose and hinder breath control in the water. We request longer hair be tied back or worn under a swim cap. All participants must supply their own towel.
Does a disposable diaper qualify for your swim diaper policy?
Any swim diaper that would be disposed after use does not qualify, including but not limited to Huggies Little Swimmers, Pampers Splashers, etc.
Am I permitted to watch my swimmer during their lesson?
We operate under a closed-deck policy, requiring all guardians to remain in the facility's bleachers on the street-side of the building. In the event a guardian's presence becomes a distraction, you may be directed "out of sight" in an effort to refocus attention on their instructor and preserve the learning environment.
What is your weather policy?
Given that we operate within an indoor facility, rarely are lessons cancelled. In the event of severe weather, participants will be notified of cancellations.
Do you offer make-ups?
Make-up lessons are only offered in the event of cancellations made by SJPS Aquatic Center. Make-up dates are not offered when lessons are missed on behalf of the participant.
Does the facility offer programs available beyond swim lessons?
We have a seasonal recreation swim program available - St. James Parish Swim Club. Visit the link here for more information.
