LCSC Coho Update. 21 April 2024

Vincent Gallant

LCSC Coho Update      21 April 2024

Tell Your Friends about the great team environment at LCSC!
Thank you for making LCSC your year-round swim team. These updates are communication to the whole team from the LCSC coaches. Please use this semi-monthly newsletter as a reference for important and timely information.
LCSC is a member club of USA Swimming and is part of the Michigan Swimming LSC (Local Swim Committee). The team is governed by a volunteer Board of Directors. We look forward to a great year of swimming at every level: learning about water safety and racing techniques; having fun developing your strength, fitness, and racing skills; and following your passion for elite-level racing success.
LCSC Mission: LCSC offers the local swimming community excellent instruction in water safety, essential swimming techniques, advanced racing skills and training, and cultivates a life-long love of the sport of swimming.
LCSC Vision: Livonia Community Swim Club will continue to develop well-rounded swimmers who strive to excel in swimming and apply these principles to all aspects of their personal success. We seek to develop both regionally and nationally ranked swimmers as well as good sports citizens.

Thank you, LCSC Board of Directors!
The LCSC Board of Directors operate the “dry” side of our team, and they are fantastic volunteers. In addition to taking care of registrations, planning and implementing our two major fundraising events annually (Snowball Splash and Polar Plunge), the BoD meets once a month for an hour to plan and implement strategies making our team a great place to swim.
Special thanks to outgoing LCSC President, Dan Coon, for his leadership the past six years! Dan has worn every hat available on the BoD, and has worn several at the same time. His even-handed demeanor has helped the team weather the usual ebbs and flows of managing a sports team, along with the unusual circumstances during the Coronavirus Pandemic. His goal to make sure the team is viable now and for future generations has been accomplished, and we are all grateful for his contributions to making LCSC an excellent community swim program.

2024 Team Shirts and IMXtreme Coho Shirts
All Coho swimmers are eligible for a team shirt, and those Coho swimmers achieving the USA Swimming IMX goals for their age group are awarded an IMXtreme Coho shirt. Shirts were distributed at the team banquet last week. If you were not in attendance, shirts are being held at the pool. If you did not get the correct size shirt, please inform coaches. We will be ordering shirts to make sure all of our Coho swimmers are properly outfitted.

2024 Spring Team Cap Order
Personalized team caps will be ordered at the beginning of May and should arrive in time for mid-June meets. Please email Coach Vince with your cap order before the end of the month. A reminder will be sent out by the social feed.

Important Parent Survey Next Week
We are seeking parent input as we plan the summer and fall training schedules. LCSC will send a survey to all families to measure the interest of afternoon training during Session IV. Typically, we have offered only two days of afternoon training, but we are open to expanding that time to four days per week if there is significant interest. Please be on watch for the survey in your email box. Thanks in advance for helping us plan ahead!

Training Schedule Update
Week of Apr. 15:
 All practices as scheduled.
Week of Apr. 22: All practices as scheduled.
Week of Apr. 29: All practices as scheduled.

2024 Spring/Summer Racing Schedule
Swim meets during the spring/summer are mainly held at 50-meter pools (LCM), giving the name, “Long Course Season,” to the summer racing calendar. “SCM” stands for “short course meters”; “SCY” refers to the 25-yard pools which we race and train in during most of the year. For our younger swimmers, the last summer meet will be in mid-July; for our older swimmers, the MCSA Summer Cup will put a wrap on summer racing.

This is a great season-starter for all Coho swimmers. Initial entries have been
accepted. Swimmers may be able to enter late if the meet does not fill. Please
check the team website or with coaches to file late entries.

LCSC Seasonal Goal Sheet and Swimmer Evaluations
Three times during the year, Coho swimmers are expected to set in writing their swimming goals for the upcoming season/year. Session III-IV (Spring/Summer 2024) goal sheets for each group are available on the team website. Each swimmer is expected to complete, in their own handwriting, their swimming goals and expectations for the upcoming seasons. Coaches will review goals with each swimmer and provide an evaluation for each swimmer during the session.

Coaches are reevaluating the equipment list for the upcoming session. If you do not yet have some equipment, please wait until our next update to upgrade your equipment.
Each Coho swim group has a list of required equipment. Some equipment is available through our SwimOutlet team store, and most is available through our partnership with Finis (We are currently assembling the Finis information.) Proper equipment allows swimmers to increase the variety of training challenges each day.

LCSC Coho 2024 Training and Racing Plan
What to Expect Each Day at Practice

~Please arrive 15 minutes ahead of scheduled time to properly stretch and prepare to be in the water on time. Coaches will review/instruct the daily stretching routine with all groups during the first two weeks of the year.
~Parents may observe practice from the spectator area on the second floor.  Per USA Swimming insurance guidelines, no parents are allowed on deck, except for meetings and/or questions for the coaches.
~Please stay home if you are having symptoms related to the flu, Covid-19, or any contagious bug.  Please communicate with us if you have positive tests in your household. We are obliged to communicate close contacts when they occur.

LCSC Daily Training
Each day, LCSC coaches and swimmers are expected to bring a positive attitude, be on-time and prepared, and be attentive to the details of swim instruction throughout the practice session. Every day offers instruction in excellent swimming skills, from the basics of underwater streamlining and propulsion to the most minute details of hand and limb placement in each racing stroke.
Preparing for Introductory Racing
Racing with LCSC is a bit different than racing summer club or high school. In the USA Swimming community, athletes are recognized for their versatility in racing in multiple strokes and distances. Each year, LCSC recognizes its young swimmers who achieve the USA Swimming IMXtreme standards for their age group. LCSC coaches work with Coho swimmers to improve technique, endurance, and speed in all four racing strokes with the goal of preparing each swimmer to have the skills and confidence needed to be successful in this swimming challenge.
Preparing for Racing at the State Level and Beyond
Daily training and understanding the basics of racing are the backbone of successful swimmers. But you need more than the basics to be successful at the higher levels of any discipline, especially an athletic endeavor like competitive swim. Daily attendance, a resilient attitude, and constant attention to minute details increase one’s opportunity to experience high degrees of success. LCSC coaches recommend that any Coho athlete interested in being prepared to race at the state level or above be prepared to practice 4-8x/week, depending upon their age. There are a lot of hungry young swimmers in the State of Michigan, and that’s only the tip of the USA Swimming iceberg!

Continue to Work for Success in 2024!
