Age Group Level (Ages 5-14)
Shortfin (Ages 5-7)
Shortfin is a developmental team for swimmers who are still learning the fundamentals of swimming. This team will work on learning and mastering the basic strokes while building endurance. This team practices for 30 minutes two days a week. There will be a Monday/Wednesday group, Tuesday/Thursday group, and a Wednesday/Friday group. Swimmers must be able to swim a 50 Freestyle and 50 Backstroke. They should be able to do so in under 1:30 for free and 1:45. Swimmers should also have knowledge of Breaststroke and Butterfly.
Date & Times:
- Monday/Wednesday - 5:30-6pm
- Tuesday/Thursday - 5:30-6pm
- Wednesday - 5-5:30pm/Friday - 5:30-6pm
Longfin (Ages 6-8)
Longfin is a developmental team with an emphasis on basic training etiquette, kicking, and the fundamentals of the four competitive strokes. Swimmers on Longfin have a strong understanding of Freestyle and Backstroke, and can demonstrate Breaststroke. During the season, swimmers on Longfin will continue to develop all four competitive strokes, and work on proper starts, turns, and finishes. Swimmers in Longfin must be able to swim 3 of the 4 strokes legally.
Days & Times: Tuesday & Thursday - 6-7pm
White (Ages 8-10)
Swimmers on White Team have a strong understanding of all four competitive strokes. White Team has an emphasis on technique training and will continue to master starts, turns, and finishes. White Team will continue to build on the stroke technique learned previously. They will be introduced to interval training and develop aerobic stamina through endurance training. Swimmers in this group should feel comfortable with swimming 1500 yards in a practice and are legal in all 4 strokes.
Days & Times: Monday, Wednesday, and Friday - 6-7pm / Thursday - 7:00-8:00pm
Black (Ages 8-10)
The Black Team serves as the first truly competitive team for Makos swimmers. Swimmers on Black Team will continue to develop stroke technique in all four strokes, and perfect their starts, turns, and finishes. Swimmers will also be introduced to more interval and endurance training, as well as being educated on meet preparation. Swim Meet attendance is required. Swimmers must have B time to join the Black Team.
Days & Times: Monday-Friday - 6-7pm
Lime (Ages 11-13)
The Lime Team is designed for swimmers ages 11-13 who desire to be part of a competitive team, but have not met the requirements for the Green Team. Swimmers will continue to refine their technique while working interval training, endurance training, and race strategies. Swimmers on the Lime Team must be at practice consistently. Swim Meet attendance is required. Swimmers on the Lime team desire to be competitive, but have not trained at a higher competitive level before. Swimmers should be comfortable swimming 2000-2500 yards a practice and have a desire to be at a competitive level. After swimming on the Lime Team, swimmers aim to reach Green or Silver, depending on their age.

Green (Ages 10-12)
Swimmers on Green Team have a higher focus on endurance and race specific training. Swimmers will still develop efficient and technically sound strokes through focus and purpose driven drills. Swimmers will also be educated on practice and race strategies, stroke physics, nutrition for training, and competition. Swim Meet attendance is required. Swimmers on Green should have experience with competitive swimming.
Days & Times: Monday-Friday - 7-8:15pm
Gray (Ages 12-14)
The primary goal of Gray Team is to have efficient technique in all four competitive strokes, starts, turns and finishes. In addition, these swimmers will be educated on stroke training, and competition and race strategies. They will continue with interval training and endurance training. This team practices five times a week for one hour. Swimmers on the Gray Team should be familiar with all four strokes and comfortable swimming over 1500 yards a practice. This team is designed for the swimmer who wants to swim, but may not desire to swim in meets.
Days & Times: Monday-Friday - 4:30pm-5:30pm
Silver (Ages 12-14)
The primary objective of the Silver Team is to refine and master efficient technique in all four competitive strokes. In addition, these swimmers aim to master their understanding of stroke physics, nutrition for training and competition, exercise physiology, and specific race strategies. Swim Meet attendance is required. Swimmers in Silver should be comfortable swimming 3500-4000 yards a practice and committed to be a competitive swimmer.

Senior Level (Ages 14-18)
Senior 1
Senior 1 is a team designed to help swimmers have efficient technique in all four competitive strokes, starts, turns and finishes. In addition, these swimmers will be educated on stroke training, and competition and race strategies. They will continue with interval training and endurance training. This team practices five times a week for one hour. Swimmers on Senior 1 should be familiar with all four strokes and comfortable swimming over 2200 yards a practice.

Senior 2
Senior 2 is a group designed for swimmers who want to be competitive, but do not meet the standards for an elite level team. Swimmers in Senior 2 will refine and master efficient technique in all four competitive strokes. In addition, these swimmers aim to master their understanding of stroke physics, nutrition for training and competition, exercise physiology, and specific race strategies. Swim Meet attendance is required. Swimmers in this group are expected to swim at least 4000 yards a practice.

Elite Level (Ages 13-18)
Premier (Ages 13-15)
The Premier Team serves as an introduction to elite level swimming. Swimmers will practice 6 days a week and prepare for competition on a national scale. Swimmers on the Premier Team will develop technically efficient strokes through focus and purpose driven drills. Swimmers will also further their understanding of stroke physics, nutrition for training and competition, race strategies, meet preparation, and discipline. Swimmers in this group are expected to have at least one championship meet cut (these include Age Group Champs, Winter Champs, or Spring Champ Meet).

Select (Ages 13-18)
The Select Team is for swimmers who stride for North Carolina Senior Championships. Swimmers in this group have swimming as their top priority and could see themselves swimming in college one day. The primary objective at the Select level is to refine and master efficient technique in all four competitive strokes. In addition, these swimmers aim to master their understanding of stroke physics, nutrition for training and competition, exercise physiology and specific race strategies. Swimmers on this team must have at least 3 Winter Championship Cuts in the 15-18 age group for women and two 15-18 age group Winter Championship cuts for men.

National (Ages 13-18)
The National Team is for swimmers who want to take their swimming to the next level. The primary objective at the National level is to train for the next level. This team participates in higher level National Meets or swimmers have a goal to swim collegiately. Swimmers in this group must have a ESSZ Senior Sectionals cut. Age group swimmers placing in the top 2 at ESSZ Age Group Sectionals may also be considered.
