Become a USA Swimming Official

  

Being an official is a great way to get involved in your swimmer's life and the sport, so thank you! You learn rules about swimming and what makes a meet work. The time will pass by much faster when you're involved. And, you will be on deck helping the sport improve.

Steps to becoming an official:

First - Contact the NFS Referee Coach Todd to express your interest! He will guide you through any initial questions you have. 

 

Second - USA Member Registration, Tests, and Background Check.

Follow the How to register with USA Swimming as an Official: to complete your: 

Once these are complete, email [email protected] to be promoted to Apprentice Official, and let Coach Todd ([email protected].com) and the team ([email protected]) know that those certifications are complete!

 

Third - Sign up to officiate at least four sessions at two different competitions as an apprentice. The best place to do this is at our NFS hosted meet. Officials certification-requirements.pdf to view the Stroke and Turn evaluation form. You will need to bring this to each session you serve as an apprentice official. 

 

Fourth - Get some officials' clothing - White shoes that can get wet, navy shorts, pants, or skirts, and a white collared shirt. Pool decks are warm, so many officials wear shorts and short-sleeved polo shirts year-round.

 

Five - Continued Education

  • USA Swimming University - you need to view "Foundations of Officiating" and the "Stroke and Turn Certification Course." Make sure you are logged into your account when viewing these courses.

  • Instructional Videos - (Scroll down to the bottom of the page and skip the introduction video. Focus on strokes: Butterfly, Backstroke, Breaststroke, Freestyle, Individual Medley)

 

NFS Home Meets

You'll need to coordinate with Coach Todd and Coach Jenn for an officiating slot for any NFS meet that you intend to work/train by responding to the scheduling email they send in advance. Volunteers will walk around and supply you with water during the meet session. Of course, you can take restroom breaks as needed. Now, get out on the deck!
