About York Swim Club of Northern Virginia

USA Swimming consists of 59 Local Swim Committees (LSC). York Swim Club is a member of the Potomac Valley Swimming Local Swim Committee (LSC). York Swim Club was founded in 1981. Our goal was to provide a winter training program for local swimmers who wished to continue swimming during the school year. We believed that swimming was one of the very best ways to develop a healthy body and mind. The foundation of the Club was to offer a positive, low-pressure environment that encouraged each swimmer and her/his academic life.

We welcome our returning swimmers and families, and our new swimmers, to YORK Swim Club’s 40th season. This will be an exciting year for the Club, with new training options and an exciting schedule of meets and social activities.

We remain dedicated to our swimmers and to our parents. Our entire coaching staff and parent group wish you and your family many successes in the coming year, both in and out of the pool.

What makes the York Swim Club so special?

When you join York Swim Club, you become a part of the York family. Many members of the coaching staff were former York swimmers. The new to York coaches came to York to join this family. There is a reason for this: York truly cares about their family: athletes, coaches, parents, volunteers, and officials. York promotes the benefits of sports, but especially the benefits of swimming.

There are many reasons for joining a club swim team. There are athletes who join for the exercise; others want to swim in college. Some are simply there because they love to swim. Whatever the reason, there is a practice group for your athlete. We are both a 9-month and an 11-month club. Many of our families take a "break" and head back to their summer pools, summer league teams, and other friendships over the summer. They then return to us again in early September. Many others continue training with York throughout the summer long-course season in either our early-morning Oak Marr or Yorktown age group and senior programs.

Success in the water is not the only goal. York strives to make their athletes shine in and out of the pool. As they progress through the programs, athletes learn better communication skills, how to balance their swimming lives with their academic and social lives. They also learn the importance of supporting their teammates.

York Swim Club is also known for all of its team bonding activities. Having team bowling, a Halloween Sock Hop for the younger swimmers, and lock-ins and retreat for the older swimmers reinforces the bonds among coaches, between coaches and swimmers, and among team mates. York is truly a special club.

Coaches goals:

  • To produce a love of the sport
  • To produce feelings of success in each swimmer
  • To create a caring attitude for the team
  • To promote York Swim Clubs motto - All for one, and one for all

Competition

We recommend that each swimmer participate in one meet per month. We feel this is an important motivating factor for swimmers and gives the coaches, parents and each swimmer an opportunity to gauge their progress. Meet information and their due dates are featured on the EVENTS tab at the top of the page.

Team Equipment

Over the past 38+ years, York has developed a team identity that is identifiable by the York logo. The logo is featured on all of our team literature and apparel. We know from experience that in order to feel like a team, we need to look like a team. Our team outfitting is evaluated and updated annually and is available to purchase at Sport Fair in Arlington Virginia. You may also visit the York Store at Sport Fair by clicking HERE.

All swimmers are required to have a York team suit and team competition swimcap to participate on the team. NO EXCEPTIONS!
