If someone has asked it, chances are you'll find it and the answer here!

Q: We aren't a member of Dulaney Swim Club, can we register for the team(s)?

A: Unfortunately, no. Our team is open to children under family memberships at Dulaney Swim Club only, per our league bylaws. If you are interested in joining our swim club, you can find that information here: https://dulaneysc.clubexpress.com/

Q: Can we participate in both swim and dive team?

A: YES! We welcome all and have coordinated our practices and meets to accomodate kids who want to participate in both teams. Occasionally there will be a conflict due to make ups. In that case, we ask that you attend the meet event, if there is one. Due to the way our system works, you will need to use two separate emails to register; use one email to register for swim and the other to register for dive team.

Q: What time is... What is the schedule for...?

A: Schedules can be found on the team webpages.

Q: I'm not sure if my child is ready for swim team. What are the requirements?

A: We understand that this sometimes can be difficult to judge. We ask that kids are not afraid of jumping/diving into the water or putting their face under water. Additionally, we ask that they are strong enough to at least swim half of a lap. If you are unsure, we usually schedule an evaluation by a coach. We also welcome you to attend a few practices to test the fit before registering. Registration will remain open until the week before our first meet.

Q: I'm interested in swim lessons, do you offer those?

A: Yes! Our coaches offer private swim lessons. Please reach out to our coaches as scheduling and pricing is handled directly through them.

Q: I'm interested in dive lessons, do you offer those?

A: Yes! Our coaches offer private dive lessons. Please reach out to our coaches as scheduling and pricing is handled directly through them.

Q: We won't be able to make all of the swim meets and/or practices. Is that OK?

A: Yes! We do not have a minimum participation requirement this summer (2021). Swimmer improvement and team morale is increased the more swimmers attend so we encourage athletes to attend all that they can but we understand conflicts do and will exist.

Q: We won't be able to make all of the dive meets and/or practices. Is that OK?

A: Yes!  Each family can decide how much they are able to be involved.  It is summer, and we recognize that families go on vacation and have other commitments.  Team morale and individual confidence/skills will improve with practice and meet attendance.

Q: We are new to swim team, can you describe the different volunteering jobs?

A: I'd be happy to- we need volunteers!!!!! We ask that all parents volunteer for at least one job for which their swimmer attends because we cannot run this team without volunteers!!!

Timer - Timers stand at the ending side of the pool for the race to time the athletes; they start their stopwatch when the starter goes off and stop it when the swimmer touches the wall. We need three timers per lane per CMSL rules. One timer is responsible for writing all three times on a timing sheet for that swimmer in that race.

Back up Timer - A back up timer stands with the rest of the timers and starts their stopwatch when the starter goes off. They are available in case one fo the lane timers has a malfunction with their watch or accidentally misses the start.

Clerk of Course - This volunteer organizes the swimmers behind the starting block to make sure each swimmer is in the correct lane for their event and heat.

Bulkhead - This is unique to our pool. If you've noticed, we do not have a stopping edge opposite our starting blocks. Therefore, we install a bulkhead in the pool before every meet and then remove it after every meet.

Heat winner - This person watches every race and gives a prize to the person who came in first in that heat.

Runner - A runner collects all of the papers from the lane timers after events are complete and brings to over the table workers to be reviewed and recorded in the computer.

Table Workers - Table workers review the timing sheets. If there are three times, they pick the middle time as the official swim time. If two of the times of the three times are the same, that time if the official time. If there are only two times, table workers average the two times to get the official swim time. The team rep then enters these times into the computer and prints out the official results of each race. Table workers check the print out for accuracy before it is posted at the pool. Typically, once races are complete, ribbon labels are printed out and table workers will add those to the ribbons and distribute according to team. This summer (2021) we are swimming virtually, therefore ribbons will be done at a later time for our team once we combine our team's times with the other times to get the official overall placement results.

Stroke & Turn - These are certified officials who oversee each race to make sure each athlete is following the rules of swimming. Some examples they will look for are correct swim form, no touching the bottom of the pool, not pulling on the lane line to advance forward, etc. We are ALWAYS looking for more certified volunteers! If you are interested, please go to the following link to register. We are required to have two officials and need more!

Q: We are new to dive team, can you describe the different volunteering jobs?

A:  Yes!  Our team cannot function without the support of our volunteers and we are grateful for the help!  There are slightly different jobs for home and away meets.  We break each meet in half so that volunteers can choose which shift is best for them (approximately six volunteers are needed for each half; each half is roughly 90min long--5:00-6:30pm for younger divers & 6:30-8pm for older divers).  Job sign-ups are available when the season starts through the Team Events Calendar.

Home Meets

Announcer:  Opens the Dive Meet and organizes the playing/singing of the National Anthem.  Announces the line-up, introduces the diver and their dive selection for each turn, and shares the order of ribbon winners at the end.  The announcer for the second half also closes the meet after ribbon distribution and thanks the visiting team. (1-2 volunteers/meet)

Dive Sheet Runner:   This can be an adult or responsible child. Takes Dive Sheets from last scoring station and returns them in order to the Announcer for each round of dives. (1-2 volunteers/meet)

Judge:   Must have completed CMDL judges training.  Scores each dive and displays number to the announcer. (4 judges/meet)

Ribbon Worker:   Records diver placement and distributes ribbons at each 1/2 of meet. (1 volunteer/meet--usually the Dive Team Rep.)

Score Table Worker:  Help check and record diver scores. (4 volunteers/meet)

Away Meets

Judge:    Must have completed CMDL judges training.  Scores each dive and displays number to the announcer. (4 judges/meet)

Referee/Judge:   Must have CMDL referee training (visiting pool usually brings the referee).  Checks dive sheets before and after each meet. Scores each dive and displays number to the announcer.  Discusses failed or incorrect dives with fellow judges and makes the final calls. (1-2 volunteers/meet)

Score Table Worker:  Help check and record diver scores. (4 volunteers/meet)
