Clunie Marlins Team Philosophy

The Clunie Marlins Swim Team is part of the recreational swim league managed by the City of Sacramento's Aquatics Section. We are open to swimmers between the ages of 7 and 17. Through the sport of swimming, our goal is to build a fun and thriving community; Where all are given the opportunity to learn new things, build meaningful relationships, and find fulfillment and self-confidence through true accomplishment. With the following core values and beliefs, we aim to build a strong foundation for our athletes in the pool and beyond.

...

More than a sport: Swimming takes years to develop. However if done right, it can be more than just a sport, but a way of life, benefiting your long term physical and emotional health. That is why we focus on the lifelong development of our athletes, through sustainable training, efficient technique, and promoting an overall love for the water alongside friends and teammates. In addition to physical development, we also coach with the emotional, social, and character development of our swimmers in mind, with the ultimate goal of forming them into well rounded athletes AND people.

"I don't train for sports. I've never trained for sports. I train for life, and sport is just a part of that." -Ray Lewis

 ...

The True Competition: While wins, medals, and championships are great and should not be discounted, the true competition is with yourself. Competition pushes us, teaches us, but it does not define us. Regardless of speed, you will applauded for improvement, guided to make adjustments when necessary, and encouraged to continually better yourself every day. Our main goal is to develop each individual, and the team, to be at their best, then we will live with the results; win, lose, or draw, with heads held high. Our coaching staff will support our athletes every step of the way, and we encourage that support from teammates and parents as well.

"Success is peace of mind which is a direct result of self-satisfaction in knowing you did your best to become the best you are capable of becoming." -John Wooden

...

Sportsmanship: Every swimmer has the capacity to be a champion in their own right, so we must act as such, with self control, poise, and humility through every triumph and every struggle. Showing respect to your competitors, supporting teammates, and staying even keeled through any challenge are just a few examples. Coaches acknowledge swimmers who demonstrate sportsmanship consistently, because all other qualities are greatly diminished without it. Take note when conducting yourself in and out of the pool, because you are not only representing yourself, but the Clunie Marlins as well.

"It is your response to winning and losing that makes you a winner or a loser." -Harry Sheehy

...

Unity: Without one another we cannot be at our best; We need each other to make it happen. Training together will inspire everyone to give their best effort. Supporting and looking out for your teammates builds trust and cooperation. Socializing with your peers outside of the pool further strengthens team bonds. We train as a team, we compete as a team, we support one another as a team, come hell or high water. And we all have a role to play, because the relationships you build here are vital to the long term fulfillment of this sport and may even lead you beyond the pool...
