The Coon Rapids Cardinals Swimming and Diving Team is open to athletes of all sizes and abilities, and we compete as both a team and as individuals, so success is measured on more than just wins and losses. We want to win, but we especially want to do our best and put our best effort forth.

Who can join the team?

If you are in grades 7-12, you are eligible to join the team, no matter your experience level!

If your child is in middle school and you are wondering if being on a high school team is "normal" for a 7th or an 8th grader, please understand that it is and that we typically have anywhere from 5 to 20 middle schoolers on our girls and boys team every year. Our team is incredibly inclusive - middle schoolers will not feel alone or too young to be on the team!

Do I need to know how to swim/dive?

No! While we are a competitive swimming and diving team, no experience is necessary to join. Plus, by joining as a seventh or eighth grader with no previous experience, you will set yourself up for success in high school!

I see there are morning practices . . .

Yes, we have some morning practices. These are NOT a deal breaker! Don't let it be the reason your child does not join the team. Often, athletes find that once they join the team, they actually want to participate in the morning practices.

Transportation options?

Our team relies on carpooling to do most of the transportation from Coon Rapids High School to Northdale Middle School (our pool is at Northdale). It always seems to work itself out, but if you are willing to help carpool, that is always appreciated!

How do I register for the Coon Rapids Cardinals Swimming and Diving Team?

Girls’ registration begins in the first week of August every year, as it is a part of the fall sports season. Boys’ registration begins in November.

-Girls’ Swimming and Diving season begins in mid-August and ends in early November.

-Boys Swimming and Diving season begins the first Monday after Thanksgiving every year and ends in early March.

Middle school students who have never registered for a high school sport before will have to provide physical to the high school. The middle school and the high school do not share that information. You may have to register in person at the high school as well.

What is the cost?

$280.00 for registration. You will need to have a practice suit and goggles, which is about another $60 total. Other costs are optional including apparel, picture orders, etc. Our booster club does a fantastic job of supporting the team and our athletes and parents do their best to fundraise and keep the costs of swimming and diving to a minimum.

What’s in it for me?

We do not cut and do not hold tryouts. Everyone gets to compete - there’s no riding the bench in swimming. Additionally, from day one you will have the opportunities to earn a high school varsity letter and be a member of the varsity team. We want you to be a part of our team and share in the fun we have!

Ok, I’m in! What do I do now?

Great! We’re excited to have you on our team! Email either the Girls' Head Coach, Ashley Rades - or the Boys' Head Coach, Hali Scholl, with any questions! Or you can join our mailing list via this website and we will reach out to you and keep you informed of when you can register at the high school. We look forward to seeing you at the pool!!
