Thank you for registering for an American Red Cross Certification course at the Katz JCC or JCC Camps at Medford. This page will provide all of the information you need regarding your course.Please refer to the email sent out on behalf of your course for specific date, time and location information. Certification Received: American Red Cross Lifeguard/First Aid/CPR/AED. Valid for 2 years.
Requirements:15 years old by the last scheduled day of the course.
Prerequisites: To be completed on the first day of class. Participants must successfully complete the pre-requisites in order to continue in the course. Please see the refund policy for more information on those who do not successfully complete the prerequisites.
- 300 yard swim (Freestyle and/or breaststroke. Swimmer must show rhythmic breathing. Goggles may be used)
- Timed Brick Event (Goggles not permitted)
- Swim 20 yards and retrieve a 10lb brick in approximately 7-10ft of water. While on your back, swim the brick back to the wall keeping both hands on the object. Exit the water without using a ladder or steps. Event must be completed within 1min 40sec.
- 2 Minutes Treading Water
- Must tread water without the use of hands for 2 minutes. Swimmer must be able to keep themselves above the surface of the water for the 2 minutes. Hands should be placed under the armpits.
Blended Learning Requirements
*Participants in Blended learning classes only must complete a 7 hour online course PRIOR to attending the first day of class. The online module will ask you to create a username and password which will allow you to access the online module at any time. All participants must show a Certification of Completion on the first day of class. Printed certificates or phone screenshots are acceptable. Use the links below to access the online module and course textbook.
What to Bring to Each Class:
- Swim Gear: Bathing suit, towel(s), goggles (only can be used for 300 yard swim) and a change of clothes
- Lunch/Dinner & Snacks: There are vending machines around the JCC as well and a bagel cafe that is open during select hours. (Closed on Saturday). We encourage you pack additional snacks/drinks to get you thruogh the day.
- Access to the course textbook (Click HERE for access to the textbook). This can be done through either a smartphone, tablet or computer. The JCC does have WiFi but you should download the book prior to entering the building in case of a wifi outage.
- Resuscitation mask (will be given to participants during class)
- Signed Lifeguard Application
- Valid photo ID (1st class only)
Additional Information:
- Participants must attend ALL sessions in their entirety AND successfully past all written (80% or better) and practical exams to receive certification.
- All sessions will include at least one break of no more than 30 minutes.
- Lifeguard classes are not learn-to-swim classes. It is expected that all participants come with a general knowledge to able to complete all prerequisites outlined.
- Please note that course does require some strenuous activity. You are encouraged to check with your health care provider before participating in all practice sessions.

Requirements: Must currently hold an American Red Cross lifeguard certification that has not expired or has expired within no more than 30 days and successfully complete online course.

- 500 yard swim (Freestyle and/or breaststroke. Swimmer must show rhythmic breathing. Goggles may be used)
- Timed Brick Event (Goggles not permitted)

- Swim 5 yards, submerge and retrieve three dive rings placed 5 yards apart in 4 to 7 feet of water, resurface and continue to swim another 5 yards to complete the skill sequence.
