MIBC Swim Meet 101

USA Swimming Swim Meet 101 - great rundown of how swim meets generally run.

Blue v White Meet (fka Time Trials)

This intrasquad meet is the first meet of the swim season. During the Blue vs White Meet, swimmers swim all strokes and establish seed times for the upcoming season. Swimmers will each swim 4 events - freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, and butterfly in the distance that is appropriate for their age group (for example, 8&U will swim each stroke in a 25, or one length of the pool). We will not have relays in the Blue vs White Meet.

This is a very important meet, as it is the only time that the coaches can get swim times for each swimmer in every stroke.  The coaches use these times to plan for our first Midlakes Dual Meets June 14 and 16.

Additionally — it’s a lot of fun!

How do I read my swimmer’s meet entries?

When you check in, you’ll receive a sheet with your swimmer’s entries for the swim meet. The sheet will show Event # (1-85), Heat (each event may have more than one heat), Lane (1-8, labeled on the starting blocks at MIBC pool), and event details (for example, 25 Freestyle).

Check in with your swimmer’s age group coordinator (for 8&U and 10&U) or coach if you have questions about the entry sheet or how to decipher an entry on a relay.

A Meets and B Meets - which do I sign up for?

There are 2 meets every week, home and away dual meets with another swim club. Our first dual meet is:

June 14: Away “B” Meet at Newport Hills Swim Club

June 16: Home “A” Meet vs Newport Hill Swim Club

Whether or not your swimmer swims in “A” or “B” meets depends on many factors. Generally the fastest swimmers only swim in “A” meets because they have met “BDQ Times.” If a swimmer has a time faster than these times, that swimmer may not participate in that event in a B meet. Link to BDQ Times can be found here. Some weeks your swimmer may participate in both meets to fill our relay teams.

Coaches will advise on which meet to sign up for after Blue and White meet. Ask your coach if you have any questions about which meets to sign your swimmer up for!

Swim Meet Availability in TeamUnify

It is important to enter your swimmer’s availability in TeamUnify by FRIDAY of the week prior to the meet (for example, June 10 for the first meets June 14/16). Coaches need time to put together the full team’s entries for the meets. Swimmers swim a maximum of 4 events per meet, and it takes time to figure it all out!

Volunteering (and Sign Up in TeamUnify)

Hopefully you have heard a few times that Parent Volunteering is mandatory for swim meets. Swim meets simply cannot run without all the parents! If you have a swimmer in a meet, expect to have a volunteer role in that meet. Sign up deadlines are 2 days before each meet. The Volunteer Coordinator will send out final assignments the day before the meet. Please pay special attention to these assignments as you may be assigned (a) to a shift even if you didn’t sign up or (b) to a different role as we prioritize filling the most crucial roles first.

Note: your swimmer may not be given their meet heat entries until you as a volunteer have signed in too!

Little Waves

Blue v White Meet June 10 (Time Trials): Little Waves swimmers will not have any heats during the meet, but Little Waves families are welcome to attend and participate in the team bbq.

Little Waves swimmers will have the option to participate in an exhibition 25 Free heat at the start of Home B meets: June 21, July 5, and July 14. Please indicate whether your swimmer will participate via TeamUnify per instructions above.
