Just wanted to pass along this email from our PSSA/YMCA leadership regarding swim officials training. There will be a virtual class offered for those of you interested on the 10th of October (I will also be attending to become certified myself). There is no cost to this, other than your time.

Here is the email:

Hello, Puget Sound Swimming Association (PSSA) Teams:

 

Please share this email with the parents and other volunteer associated with your swim team. This email is an invitation to attend YMCA Swim Official classes in early October 2022. These classes will be taught on-line through Zoom.  The start time for each class will be 6:00 p.m. Pacific Coast Time (7:00 p.m. Mountain Time or 5:00 p.m. Alaska Time.)

 

These classes are open to individuals:

  • Who have no prior experience as a swim official.  They can take the Level 1 class.
  • Experienced YMCA Level 1 officials who want to obtain a Level 2 credentials.
  • Any YMCA Level 1 or Level 2 official who wishes to recertify their credentials,
  • Any United State Swimming Association Swimming (USA-S) officials who want to obtain a YMCA credential.

 

Only individuals who are at least 21 years of age and associated with a recognized YMCA swim team are eligible to enroll in these classes.

 

The classes will occur as follows:

 

Monday, October 10, 2022, YMCA Level 1 Swim Official class:

 

  • Course Description

This course is designed to train participants as swim officials for the YMCA of the USA’s Competitive Swimming Program in the areas of Stroke and Turn Judge, Relay Take-off Judge, Place Judge, and Timer. The course focuses on the specific duties and responsibilities of the above officials prior to, during and after a swim meet. The course also reviews the facilities requirements for a meet, swimmer eligibility, and the roles of Chief Judge, Starter, and Referee. Successful completion of a written examination is required to pass the course.

 

  • Prerequisites

Aside from the age requirement and association with a recognized YMCA swim team, there are not any other prerequisites to attend this class.

 

Course participants intending to use this program to recertify as YMCA Level I officials must provide documentation that they have served as an official at a minimum of 12 meet sessions over the prior three-year certification period.

 

Two options for YMCA Level 2 Swim Official class.  You can choose to attend on either Monday, October 17, 2022, or Wednesday, October 19, 2022:

 

  • Course Description

This course is designed to certify or recertify participants as swim officials for the YMCA of the USA’s Competitive Swimming Program in the areas of Referee, Starter, and Chief Judge. The course focuses on the specific duties and responsibilities of the above officials prior to, during and after a swim meet. The course also reviews the facilities and staffing requirements for a meet, rules for swimming various strokes, matters relating to eligibility and other key roles of the official. Successful completion of a written examination is required to pass the course.

Prerequisites

In addition to the age requirement and association with a recognized YMCA swim team, the other prerequisite is - be fully certified as a YMCA Level I or USA-S official for at least one year. In addition, they must provide a copy of their YMCA Level I Certification or USA-S Official’s card and documentation that they have served a minimum of 8 sessions as a fully certified YMCA and/or USA-S Swim Official.

 

Course participants intending to use this program to recertify as YMCA Level II officials must provide documentation that they have served as an official at a minimum of 12 meet sessions over the prior three-year certification period.

 

Cost:

The cost of any of these classes is $-0-.  PSSA is covering to cost of these classes.

 

Deadline to sign-up:

For the YMCA Level 1 Swim Official class please sign-up by 5 p.m. on Thursday, October 6, 2022.

 

For either of the YMCA Level 2 Swim Official classes please sign-up by 5 p.m. on Thursday, October 13, 2022.

 

How to sign-up by the deadline:

  • Send an email to Earl Long at [email protected].
  • Include in your email the following information:

o   Your first and last name

o   Your phone number.  Please specify if it is or is not a cell phone.

o   The name of the branch of your YMCA swim team

  • Include the date of the class you want to attend.  Specify either:

o   Monday, October 10, 2022, YMCA Level 1 Swim Official class

o   Monday, October 17, 2022, YMCA Level 2 Swim Official class

o   Wednesday, October 19, 2022, YMCA Level 2 Swim Official class

 

Next steps following the sign-up:

  • YMCA requires you to enrolled for the class through the Learning and Career Development Center (LCDC). 

o   (IMPORTANT) You will need to have an LCDC account to access the link.  If you do not have or are unfamiliar with using LCDC, please check with the service staff at your YMCA.

  • I will send you the LCDC link once you send me an email specifying the class you want to attend.
  • I will also send you a one-page document that you will need to have signed by an administrator of your YMCA.  This can be the branch executive, aquatics director, or volunteer coordinator.  You will need to send me the signed form within 30 days of attending the class.
