September 26th Update: Swim meet info, parent meeting summary, upcoming dates, and more!

Joseph Shelly

Good morning SVYA Tritons!

I have lots of important info to share with you all, and hope I can make the upcoming competition schedule clear. I will not be sending out push notifications for the upcoming meets to avoid spam and sign up confusion, so please look through our events on the website! I will also be compiling the registration links below.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

For our upcoming important swim meets and deadlines:

  • We have TWO different swim meets occuring on October 7th and October 8th:
    • The Oct 7th meet with BBST also runs on the 8th, but we will not be attending since we have a home meet the following day.
      • You must have USA Swimming registration completed to register for this meet. This is also a good beginner competition if you are unable to attend our home meet!
      • Registration deadline has been extended to TONIGHT! There are more spots that opened up and any last minute registration can happen until 11:59pm tonight. Registration link is here: https://www.gomotionapp.com/EvSignup.jsp?event_id=1250540&team=recpssvy
    • Our first home meet of the season is on October 8th! Warm ups start at 7:30am, and the meet will end by around 11:45am.
  • The IST Open is a swim meet at the Snohomish Aquatic Center, a great facility and one of the best pools in WA
  • The TAC Fall Thunderbird 2023 is a swim meet in Anacortes (Fidalgo Pool).

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

For our upcoming event information:

  • We will be having a combined practice for all swimmers on October 2nd. We will be holding a mock meet this day, and hope to also see parent volunteers help make this a great learning opportunity for newer swimmers (and families)!
    • All swimmers will warm up from 4:30pm-5:00pm, no registration is required (I will sign all swimmers up, if you cannot attend that is okay, if you let me know by this Friday (October 29) that will help me organize the mock meet a little more efficiently!
    • All swimmers will race the 50s of each stroke! We will swim the heats fastest to slowest so that the more experienced swimmers can help be role models for our newer swimmers.
    • Parents who are interested in maybe becoming officials can use this meet to try it out! I will be officiating as well and can help give advice :) Any current officials are also welcome and greatly appreciated to help me run the mock meet!
    • There will be small prizes for swimmers who earn the "highest points" in each age group. We will need at least 6 timers to help out and allow me to go through times! We will not be using the electronic time system since that will take too much setup.
  • The 2023 SVYA Trunk or Treat is happening on October 27th!
    • We encourage as many people to bring a car with a decorated trunk (and candy) for the swimmers to enjoy another year's edition of the SVYA Trunk or Treat! Last year was a great success and we look forward to what we see this time around!
    • We will have a combined practice on this day (swimmers in the water from 4:30pm-6:00pm) At around 6:00pm, swimmers will be allowed to change (we also encourage bringing costumes), and be allowed to Trunk or Treat in the area behind the pool.
    • More information will be provided at the October parent meeting and subsequent meeting summary on an October newsletter

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In addition to the above, we had a few other topics that were briefly discusses in the parent meeting yesterday and I wanted to share a quick summary here:

  • We have an upcoming fundraising opportunity with Van Wingerden Greenhouses! We partnered with them for the previous flower basket sales, and they are now partnering with us for Poinsettias! I will be uploading the donation forms for people to share (I will also have hard copies available if you'd like). A seperate post will be made in the next week with the specific pricing and more information.
  • Our handbook has and is being updated to reflect the current year and some administrative duty changes. It can be found on our website under the resources tab!
  • The current requirement to qualify for the YMCA WA State Championship meet is to attend 2 YMCA swim meets (and be a member of the swim team for 90 days). This meet is always at King County Aquatic Center, the best pool in the PNW! This is a great way for all swimmers to get Championship meet experience if they are unable to make the qualifying times for YMCA Regionals or any other championship meets we attend. This meet will take place in late January and more information will be available when we get closer.
  • I am 95% sure that this year's Y Regional Championship meet will take place in Boise, Idaho again. I'll ask our PSSA team during our next administrative meeting in October to see if that is the case, but it is most likely the same spot. Y Regionals has qualifying times and will be taking place Friday/Saturday/Sunday in early March (usually the first week).
  • There is an app that lets you stay logged into our website (it's name is "SportsEngine Motion" on the app store). The app provides you quick access to some of the website's core features. I don't use it myself since I need a lot of admin tools, but there are parents that do recommend it and say it makes connecting with the website a lot easier!
  • I'm happy to hear new ideas and see if we can incorporate extra fun little things to add to the program! One idea I had was to figure out a system (maybe team bag tags or keychains) and have beads/rings be added to symbolically represent personal best swims, team record holders, demonstrating good character/comradery, etc.
  • Our team need officials! If you are at all interested, please attend the mock meet to see if that could be something you help with! Many officials do not have a competitive swimming background, and are still very successful and help keep these local swim opportunities alive for our swim community. If you are interested, let me know and I can provide more information and a path to get certified! The certification courses are free right now, as the PSSA voted to keep it that way and renew funding for it this year, so now is the best time to get involved!
  • Swim Up the Skagit event organization will be brought up in a later parent meeting and/or post. I would like to get this up and running again soon but definitely will need help! This is a fun event for our team that has historically happened every year under Jim Cornforth (my swim coach, and previous Head Coach of the team). It features a raffle, open facility for swim team, swimming for distance (and pledges like a charity running event), and more!
  • Swim caps are being passed out (new swimmers will receive them at practice, and our returning swimmers will receive replacements if needed).

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Thank you all for your continued support of the team, and welcome to all the new SVYA Triton families!

Best,
Joseph Shelly
