2024 Y State Championships and quick debrief for combined practice

Joseph Shelly

Hi all,

Thank you to those attending the winter break combined practice & party yesterday! Sorry that it ran a little late, but if you brought a shirt and had to go early, feel free to hand it to me (today or tomorrow only) and I can iron on a logo for you. Those of you that left a shirt with me, I have your shirts ready to be picked up at the next practice your swimmer attends! Thank you to everyone who helped out, and brought things to share! Going forward, I think that next year's iteration will feature a sock exchange that more resembles a raffle (a lot more simple, quicker, and stealing will not be an issue). Sorry that it was so chaotic, I did not anticipate us doubling our participants from last year!

I want to also shoutout 3 swimmers that I want to recognize for being excellent representatives of the Y Core values yesterday:

Levi Slagg and Uriah Slagg (Responsibility): The brothers were a huge help, taking the initiative and helping with cleanup long after everyone had left. There were a lot of crumbs and wrappers, but they helped us leave the place even more tidy than I found it before the event.
Caroline Veltri (Honesty): Even though she had a sock that she really liked, and a teammate asked if she could steal (which would also end up giving her a sock that she brought), Caroline had been honest and did not lie or cheat.

I owe you three a duck and a yellow bead to add to your bagtags.

The rest of this post will be all about Y State and what I know so far:

The 2024 Y State event page is updated, and I will copy-paste what I posted in the description, so please let me know if you have any questions! The PSSA just had a meeting regarding Y State, and as the secretary I get the info a little bit before most coaches. The meet announcement is being finalized and the Y meet requirement was changed from 3 to 2 as of Tuesday evening. The qualification window was also changed from May to Regionals, and we will probably be sticking to that for years to come. This means, any Y meets that your swimmer attends after Regionals will count towards the attendance requirement for the following year's Y State Championship meet.

Y State is a championship level meet that will be hosted at the King County Aquatic Center on January 27th. This is possibly the best competitive swimming facility in the entire PNW, and is a great experience especially for those who have yet to qualify for the Y Regional Championships. All YMCAs within Washington State come to compete, and our team has always been a strong contender and top finisher for points. We encourage all swimmers who can go to attend!

To qualify for the 2024 Y State Championship meet, swimmers must have attended 2 YMCA meets, and have held membership of their swim team for the 90 days prior to the first day of competition (joined on or before October 29th). There are no qualification times (there are a few exceptions for long distance events for younger age groups, which will be outlined in the meet announcement).

*High school swimmers are eligible to enter Y State at the request and submission of a waiver from their team's head coach. This is to acknowledge the difficulty of attending enough meets while also balancing the high school competitive swim season. Other exemptions from the 2 Y meet rule include: extreme illness, loss of family member, injury, and other unforeseen circumstances.
